Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day all Month Long at These NYC Bars | Eater

"Noel Donovan, Eugene Wilson, and John Mahon created Bloom’s Tavern to be a lasting tribute to author James Joyce. Or rather, the character he dreamt up, Leopold Bloom, whose Irish adventures were chronicled in Joyce’s book Ulysses. So there’s no cocktail more fitting to order than the James Joyce. In it, Jameson Whiskey, Benedictine, Grand Marnier, and fresh lemon juice are shaken, poured, and garnished with a twist." - Lee Musho

This is one of the best Irish pubs I’ve been too given its dine in service and food quality. I do love their happy hour menu. I got a frozen margarita and I was not disappointed. This is the best frozen margarita I’ve ever had, they put a good amount of alcohol in this one that it makes sense to have the frozen option, perfect for summer. I ordered the chicken wings, spicy, it’s good I like it as they had a good crisp cooked well and the sauce is nice and balanced which goes great with the blue cheese. I do love the meat, quality of their hamburgers as they use a good amount of sirloin. This is great if you’re walking in the city with friends and if you like to hangout and go to happy hour, I highly recommend coming here. Bloom’s Tavern, I look forward to seeing you guys again in the future to try out your other food options and I’ll definitely come back for your happy hour when I’m in the city.

The food and beer selection was great but the impressive visit was the staff - our servers and the bartender were outstanding. All three were interested in our visit and made sure everything was going good. It was very impressive how caring they were. Our visit was Easter Sunday night. We had questions about getting to Roosevelt island and when the tram stopped running - our server went out of her way to get us the info and also what was the best way to get back to our hotel - who needs gps when you have the kind people at the Bloom!

Came here with my parents after they moved me into my apartment around the block. We loved it. The staff is always friendly, gives you complementary drinks, and efficient service and good food. I plan on becoming a regular here.

Blooms is a home away from home. My first meal ever after moving to nyc was here and now I’ve moved away and came all the way back to town and had to come back. Really great food and amazing drinks. Great atmosphere. Everyone is really friendly and it’s super cozy and laid back. Love this place.

Only had drinks with a friend. Michael, the bartender was phenomenal. Highly recommend this place. Local crowd. Good music. Good people. Great bartenders

Stopped here around 7 on a weekday and it was pretty packed but we were sat right away. The second level was closed for a private party. There weren’t any cocktails on the menu that sounded great but the bartender was happy to make us “something fruity”, which ended up being a very solid martini! The nachos came out quick and were fine. My only comment is that my friend and I had four martinis and 2 shots in a three-hour window and we were super regular, just talking. Not screaming, dancing, slurring, talking to other tables, just talking. We thought it was interesting when the server came by and “Alright ladies” in a chiding tone when we asked for another drink but instead, the bartender came by and let us know he was cutting us off. We, at first, just said Okay and paid but I was curious and asked him why, as we had done nothing but talk, and he said he didn’t know us and that was a lot of alcohol already. I appreciate them trying to be responsible I guess, but it was a bit weird to me to be cut off for what I would consider to be a not excessive amount of drinking and no hint of bad, drunken behavior. Is it strictly one drink per hour¿¿¿¿ just curious.

Have gone there many times. Good Irish bar with very good food. From appetizers to entrees, never had a bad meal there. Plenty of televisions with sports always on.

Yelp
The service was unbelievable- as soon as we stepped in we were treated royally - our server was warm and friendly - and she was busy yet never let that change her attitude. The bartender came from the bar to check on us and say hello and asked if we needed refills. The food runner had a smile and was so polite. The food was GREAT and the beer selection was great. The tavern is really nice!- this is our type of place that is perfect for me, my wife and family friendly. We walked all day and sitting in this welcoming environment with no pressure of leaving was so incredible. We asked our server about getting to Roosevelt Island and she made sure to let us know when it stopped running and then helped us with directions on the best way to get back to our hotel in Tribeca. Bloom was one of the highlights of our NYC Easter visit. Thank you all!!!

Yelp
Few things in life are as reliable (or as good) as Bloom's Tavern and its great service and atmosphere. A big thanks to Noel Donovan, the general manager/owner and his team for a night of lovely drinks, food and hospitality as we celebrated a milestone birthday. There were a lot of moving parts, including 70 guests and a band, but Noel took care of the logistics so we could focus on the party. Thank you, Bloom's!

Yelp
A great local Irish pub with food, beer and tv's - solid spot in the Midtown East area to grab a Guinness while watching a game! There have been times where this bar is a bit busy with a rowdy crowd and others where it's been only a few customers. The food is decent but more attention from the servers would be appreciated; I tried to get hot sauce with my nachos but no one ever came around and my water glass remained empty until we finally got the bill. Overall great spot to chill!

Yelp
I'm a repeat customer at this Irish pub. Drinks are always good, food is good, always tables available. Service is fast and everyone is nice. Even offered to switch out my friend's drink after she didn't really like it. It has the pub feel and it's exactly what you're looking for.

Yelp
Just far enough outside the mid-town tourist radius. Classic, upscale pub with a REAL fireplace ! Excellent Guiness pours, very clean inside, & very friendly & attentive service. Navigating the stairwell to the basement-level bathrooms helps keep a check on your sobriety, or lack thereof. AWESOME food, hitting all the right notes - fresh Caesar salads, perfectly-prepared buffalo wings, & my fav - risotto! This place is not in the path of my regular travels, but will def be back when I'm in the area. Also, the owner is very hands on & engaged with the place, & obviously takes great pride in his business & keeping his customers happy.

Yelp
If you know anything about James Joyce, you will enjoy this pub! It is dedicated to Joyce, the famed Irish novelist and poet, and named after the protagonist in his book, "Ulysses." It was very crowded when we went due to March Madness so that made for a lively ambiance. My husband was especially happy that he could catch the games! There was one empty seat at the bar where my husband had me sit. The bartender then asked people down the bar to move over so that my husband could sit next to me! Really nice of him! We ended up getting a couple IPAs and food to share. The Tuna Steak Wrap was surprisingly delicious! There was a generous amount of medium rare tuna served with lettuce and tomato in a flour tortilla with wasabi mayo. We also shared the broccoli soup of the day.

Yelp
From seating to paying, everything felt well done. The employee engaged various customers in conversation. The amount of food justifies what you pay. This restaurant leads in quality and service. This restaurant combines quality and value.

Yelp
Nice selection of beers, spirits and snacks. The staff was super friendly especially our female server (Sunday 6pm) who was helpful and kind and patient. Completely different from the unfriendly staff at Fitzpatrick's hotel bar nearby.

Yelp
Was happy to find this little restaurant for a drink before dinner. The fireplace was perfect for a cold February evening and the cider was an excellent touch. Our waitress was kind and the prices were reasonable for New York!

Yelp
Convenient to 59 East 59 Theater. Classic NY Irish bar with a fireplace and decent food. Sit at the bar for speedy service. Definitely will return when I'm seeing a show.

Yelp
5 stars!!!! Bloom's Tavern is such a gem in NYC! The vibe is cozy and welcoming, and the staff truly go above and beyond. Noel, the boss, is incredibly friendly and makes everyone feel at home. Christina, our waitress, was amazing--so sweet, attentive, and on top of everything. Evelyn was also super kind and helpful. You can tell the team here really cares about their guests. Great drinks, great food (definitely try the nachos!), and even better service. I'll definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Came here for brunch on a Saturday and it was absolutely amazing! Casual atmosphere. Perfect place if you're looking for a delicious spot with bottomless mimosas AND a plethora of TVs to catch any sporting event. I ordered the baked vegetable frittata (which was amazingg), it came with home fries that were crispy and cooked to perfection. Service was spectacular, there was never a time where my glass was empty without another drink on the way. 10 out of 10 would recommend!! Note: The champagne to OJ ratio in the mimosas was absolutely perfect.

Yelp
A solid low key bar with decent food This place has two bars. One upstairs and one on the main level. When I sat down at the bar I was warmly greeted by the bartender Liam. After he poured me a drink he went out of his way to give a proper introduction. Getting a bartenders name without having to ask is rare and much appreciated. The Guinness was decent. Poured properly, proper amount of head and temperature. The nitrogen level tasted a bit off and had a bit of a bitter taste. They said they were checking on the nitrogen level but they never came back with an answer. The answer the bartender got was that they just changed the keg (which is not an actual answer). I would rate the Guinness a 4/5. Bartender's ability to pour a perfect Guinness is a 5/5. The Corned Beef Reuben was very good. The corned beef was very lean and it tasted great. All it was missing was a bit of Mayo and it would have been amazing. Would definitely recommend trying it. Warning - Their beer menu does not give the price because it varies depending on what you get. I wasn't too happy about their prices not being displayed on the menu. Make sure to ask if you are not looking to be surprised later on in the night. Overall a 4/5 The food and drinks were good. The atmosphere is on the darker side Service was solid.

Yelp
4 stars for the food and 2 stars for the service. The food here is really good if you go with what they are known for - the fish and chips and the irish breakfast. The fish was cooked perfectly and struck a balance between the meat and the fried batter. It was also a bit larger than the typical fish pieces you get from other similar bars in the neighborhood (and trust me - I've tried a lot of fish and chips in my time). The irish breakfast was also delicious although a bit more standard / typical to what you'd expect. The ambiance was nice too but was ruined by the service and poor attentiveness. I was seated outside and the employee watering the plants sprayed onto my table and drink not once but TWICE. I have no idea why they'd water the plants when a customer is seated right in the SPLASH zone. I told the employee that I needed to get a new glass of water but he didn't seem to understand so he grabbed the waitress who proceeded to be clueless as to what had happened. It was quite annoying having to explain again that the hose water had gone into my glass of water. We had to switch tables after that since it was soaked.

Yelp
Came for lunch around 12:30 and the place was empty so our server was very attentive. Two of us just split the wings with loaded tots. The flavor on the wings was good but too subtle. The crisp on the outside was great, I hate a soggy wing. The tots were also good, who doesn't love cheese and bacon on their tots. For what we got I think it was overpriced.

Yelp
We walked in at 10:30pm on Sunday and just wanted to get a drink at the bar (my husband and I). It said open until 2am. The bartender said "we are closing". A guy walked in shortly behind us, sat at the bar, and ordered a drink. My husband went to the bartender and said we just wanted a drink. He said I can get you a quick one, but no, instead we left. We jokingly said "tourist discrimination", but it was pretty random that we couldn't get a get drink!

Yelp
We showed up for a bottomless brunch on a Saturday. The spot itself is cute and welcoming. We ordered the breakfast wrap which was essentially all egg and minimal bacon. It wasn't that great, but the steak fries were phenomenal. They had one waitress working, which seemed nuts for a place offering bottomless brunch. We ordered mimosas and finally the busser brought us a carafe that he kept refilling so we could take advantage of the bottomless. I'm sure there's better brunch places in NYC. If you're looking for a more calm atmosphere, I would check it out, otherwise keep searching!

Yelp
Great place! Extremely clean and well run. Super great staff! All around must go in midtown for lunch or even at night

Peter C.

Yelp
I really like this place a lot. The food is way above average pub grub. For instance- the turkey club is actually real Turkey, not that slimy thick cold cut crap in most places. The nachos are outstanding! Service friendly and a warm cozy vibe. Would love if they got the fireplace working!

Dina L.

Yelp
Fun staff. Great service. Great menu and really good food. Big bar. Tables. Not too loud. Lots of TVs. We were staying very nearby and ended every day at Bloom's during our trip.
google avatar

Alexandra K.

Yelp
Drinks and service were a 5/5, but I would say food was a 3.5/5. We did the bloomburger and the pepperoni flatbread, both were so loaded with goat cheese it overpowered the flavors. The portions were super generous though!

Yelp
This place is busy and is full of the professionals working around the neighborhood. The bartender was from Ireland? Australia? I couldn't really make out her accent. She gave 95% of her attention to the male patrons. Not hating, just stating the fact. I ordered a margarita... I would think that margaritas are standards for bartenders.the margarita was strong, but tasted like dirt. I managed three sips. How do bartenders not know how to make margaritas. I was in the mood for spinach dip. I placed it and it arrived quickly with warm pita bread. The spinach dip wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either, it had a weird after taste. The bartender barely checked or acknowledged me. Will never go back there again.

Yelp
For my first (and last) visit to this establishment, I must say I was unimpressed with the level of service received. As an establishment boasting it's midtown east location and pricing, I had higher expectations. A coworker and I ducked in for a quick lunch. It has a dark interior with low lighting. When we entered we asked the hostess if we could sit at the bar and she politely agreed. We sat at the bar and the bartender greeted us. We each had one drink and we shared two appetizers. The food was kind of crappy. We had a margarita pizza that tasted like a frozen Totino's (IYKYK). The artichoke dip tasted like creamed spinach from a cheap steakhouse and was served with pita bread. Not the best choice of bread but we managed. Food was not even photo worthy. Service was neutral until we requested our bill. The bartender (KAREN H.) completely ignored our request and started fraternizing with other guests seated at the bar and outside of the bar area. We waited for a few minutes after trying to get her attention and then proceeded to ask another staff member if he could get her attention for us. At that time we saw her reappear immediately and we asked again for our bill. My coworker and I were baffled by the obvious curt behavior she offered and continued to ignore our request. We waited another 8 minutes before she returned with our bill. We split the bill which was $73.00. My colleague paid cash and I used a credit card. We also paid a tip in cash. Karen brought the cc reader over and put my card inside. I specifically stated, "please charge my card $40.00 as we are paying the rest in cash". She left the reader on the bar and walked away again for another 6 minutes. When she finally came back, she picked up the reader and told me to sign. I requested a paper receipt and once again waited another 5 minutes for her return. We were running late and immediately left after obtaining the receipt. When I looked at the receipt later on I saw that KAREN charged my card $45.73 after I specified to charge $40. She paid herself another tip off of my credit card. Never in my dining experiences have I had staff overcharge my card. I have also reached out via the establishment's website about this experience and am awaiting a response. My advice.... just don't patronize this business and save yourself from an unpleasant encounter.

Yelp
Returned to Bloom's Tavern for the Euros/Copa games, great atmosphere, despite USA losing. Lots of fun mixing with supporters of other countries (English fans and Germans watching games there too). A real buzzing, friendly bar with great beer selection (four IPAs!) decked out with all the national flags for the soccer. Booking our seats for the final matches!!

Ron S.

Yelp
A great location and atmosphere paired with fantastic food and wonderful service. The owner is a fantastic host and we were fortunate enough to have Karen behind the bar for our large party who handled things wonderfully . I highly recommend it and if you're unsure of where to start go with the flatbread with the Fig jam and the goat cheese . Pair it with a Jameson orange and ginger ale .

Yelp
Blooms tavern was the first highly rated bar that showed up close to where I had just got done with a work dinner. We were having too good of a time to break up the party yet. We were looking for an low key Irish pub with a happy hour menu and Blooms checked those boxes. They have two floors, the ground floor is catered for your tinder dates, the first floor is for when you have a mid-large sized party looking to have a good time. Their happy hour menu goes on all evening and is expansive. The wait staff sounded Irish and treated us with their notable Irish hospitality- warm, welcoming and they all just seemed thrilled to serve us. Blooms has five stars for a very good reason. Check them out if you're in the neighborhood.

LeAnn J.

Yelp
Went for brunch food, drink and service was great definitely going back. I had the English mans breakfast and mimosas. The ambience was pretty chill, bar settings the games were on

Yelp
Super casual and cozy inside! The cocktails were great and the food options were good too! Would totally come back here again to grab drinks. There are two floors to seat yourself.

Yelp
Sorry to do another review on fish and chips, but I had the perfect fish and chips tonight and had to give praise where it's due.  I've eaten a lot of fish and chips in the pubs and bars of Manhattan and there are a lot of good ones!  Some of the better ones, however, still were a bit off somehow whether it was the texture or cut of the fries or the texture or type of batter.  Even still, some places use haddock and others flounder. The one I had tonight from Bloom's Tavern is the best I've eaten so far.  I had it delivered because I was working late, but it still was hot on arrival.  The fish was cod, which is what should always be used in my opinion.  2 medium sized fillets fried with beer batter that came out crispy on the outside (a dry crust, not soggy or greasy), enough so that you could hear the fork breaking the crust.  The cod was fresh, flaky and very satisfying when biting into it...imagine all those ingredients including the lemon juice, malt vinegar and their home made tartar sauce all getting into your belly.  Further, the fries were some of the best I've had...medium-sized and still crispy after delivery (not too skinny, crunchy or greasy)...fried in a way that a lot of places can't copy.  I don't think that I am too off base on this one, but please take the opportunity to try it once and give me your opinion.

Yelp
It's a good bar. I don't drink so I can't judge the drinks but the food was pretty decent. I was very h as happy with the onion rings. They were bug and not just made of crust. I definitely recommend them. The food was really decent and the atmosphere was chill. Friendly service too. Music was okay that night. Mera's Tip: have some snacks and chill

Yelp
Came here for happy hour and tried their spicy margaritas which were pretty good and strong. I'd come back for a drink.

Yelp
Stopped here recently to meet up with one of my peoples for a drink. Cool sports bar in the Midtown East area. Plenty of space and good vibes. Plenty of TV's to watch sporting events and the drinks were decent and priced okay. Not much else to mention about it, being that I didn't partake in any food purchases but nonetheless, a good bar for an after work gathering or random date night.

Yelp
Overall: A little dingy, service was decent, and portions were small, food less than average and overpriced Atmosphere: I came here with friends after work for snacks and drinks. The place looked decent and was near work. But the inside is depressing and not well lit. I get that's the feel of a pub / tavern but the furniture is old and not well taken care off. Very average Service: Slow but decently attentive. Our waiter was nice enough but again nothing special. Food and Drinks: I don't drink by the drinks my friends got looked decent. The food was not good through. Their mozzerella sticks are $13 for 6 measly sticks that I swear are from the freezer isle of your local Aldis. You do the math. The nachos were so sad. A huge dollop of sour cream does not make the dish tasty my friends. In a city with amazing restaurants and bars this is not one that I would recommend. Probably won't be back unless co-workers urge me to because of convenience Edit: changed the review to one star to reflect the owners sarcastic response below. You tell me if this is a business you want to support.

Yelp
Made our way over here for a Saturday late-afternoon snack. Several tables with heat lamps outside as well as a few that aren't as warm. Luckily we were able to get a table for two as a pair was leaving the warm area. Decided on splitting the Vegetarian Nachos ($13) to go along with a draft beer ($9). Nachos are a layering of thick tortilla chips, beans, cheese, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. Good assortment of ingredients, wish it was layered better as most of the chips had no cheese or anything else on them. Beer list is your standard fare, a couple dollars more expensive than it should be but fine overall. There are also some decent cocktails (warm and cold) to choose from. Service here is pretty good despite a big group taking some of the resources away. Seems like there is a lot of space inside, so hopefully will be able to try again when we are able.

Yelp
Solid bar with good HH. Great staff and nice space, indoor, bar, outdoor. Sliders were great, I'd say it's slightly better than any bar for 10 blocks which is saying a lot for midtown in 50's. They even have good oysters!

Trish F.

Yelp
We had a cousins reunion at Bloom's on Feb 24, 2024. Noel was awesome from the very start by communicating with me weeks in advance to plan the night, all the way through the night of the event. He was FABULOUS! Our night was great with lots of appetizers and drinks. The bartender that helped us all night was also amazing. Friendly, attentive and fast to serve us. Thanks to Noel / Bloom's for a top notch evening. We'll be back!

Yelp
Walking from Grand Central to UES I found this gem of a Irish pub. About a week later it found itself in my path once again. By the time I sat down I was greeted and had a drink waiting for me at my stool. The staff here is beyond friendly and the prices are fair. A detour on my walk home may become the new norm. Yelp
As far as what Bloom's is, it is very good at what it is. Great selection of cold beer and all kinds of spirits. Karen behind the bar was everything a good bartender should be. My food was an 8 with presentation that was a 10. My only complaint is I just felt that things were a bit overpriced, by a bit, I mean quite a bit. I know things are up, but I think they are a few years ahead of the curve. So much so, that I wont be back, too many other places just like Blooms.

Yelp
Good Irish pub to have dinner. I ordered the shepherd's pie and it was ok, and the onion soup was ok too. Service is good, and the ambience was funny, not so crowded on a Fridays night

Yelp
Really good comfort food. Excellent service. The wait staff was super friendly and always at your service. Brunch was cook to perfection and fast. Highly recommend with friends and family

Yelp
Friendly establishment east side midtown. Good assortment of local brews on tap, plus your standard Guinness and Goose Ale. The bar menu with small bites has a good selection, meatballs, nachos, sliders and my choice steak on toast. That was recommended my Michael, my bartender. Bite sized portions of tenderloin served on top of French bread crostini, drizzled with a tangy aoli. 2bites for each piece, tender, flavorful and delicious. A wonderful refuge from yesterday's storms. Oh! They even have free WiFi, compliments of Yelp!

Josh F.

Yelp
Met a friend after work and we were looking for a place to grab a drink and catch up. We stumbled upon this establishment and was pleasantly surprised. Excellent service, great food and local bar atmosphere. Highly recommend Blooms if your looking for a casual place to grab a drink and some great pub food.

Yelp
As my hubby was hankering for a Guinness, we used our Yelp app to find a pub nearby as we were walking in NYC... it took us to Bloom's Tavern. What a nice little bar! We sat under a huge Guinness mirror and ordered drinks. I'd stick with the beer menu!! I ordered a mixed drink and it was pretty bad. I had my table mates try it, and they agreed! So beer it is! The place was lively and pleasant, not too loud. We were given some complimentary drinks called Dark & Stormy... pass, they were Dank & Stodgy...so beer it is! My friends ordered the oysters, I'm not a fan, but they said the oysters were Fantastic! So I'll take their word for it! All and all, we had a good time grabbing a refreshment and hanging out at this pub, but remember... beer it is!!!

Yelp
This place has the best soups...I had the crab bisque yesterday - so good! Staff is always super friendly...

Yelp
Best Moscow mules in town! We love going here for brunch and for dinner on week days. Cranberry and goat cheese salad and chicken fingers are my favorites. I tried their chocolate chip pancake once and at the whole thing in under a minute lol Definitely recommend this spot

Yelp
We love this place! They really know how to take care of their customers. We had an amazing party for my girlfriend with over 100 people and they were so professional and took care of all our guests. We highly recommend this venue!

Yelp
We just came here on my birthday tonight and I was super excited to review when we got back to our hotel. The owner/manager is super sweet. We came all the way from maryland and it's one of the best places I've been to in nyc this weekend. Thank you for the cheesecake and thank you for the wonderful experience

Yelp
It's not every day you're able to raise money for cancer research AND review a new place on Yelp...but here I am! Bloom's Tavern graciously allowed my fundraising team to host a happy hour in the upstairs portion of the bar and provided us with drink specials for the sale of wristbands, the proceeds from which went directly to fund life-saving research. The bar is large (two levels) and well-decorated. Our team was able to have an entire area near the windows upstairs to ourselves which was very kind of them, though the windows had large gaps in them so frigid air from outside quickly froze anyone standing near them. The bar food was slightly above average - while the mozzarella sticks and buffalo wings were simply satisfactory, the spinach and artichoke dip with pita was great. We actually enjoyed it so much that we tried to order more pita so we could finish every last morsel of dip. Unfortunately, we were charged an additional $2+ for extra pita so that order was rapidly 86ed. I'd probably give this place 4/5 stars for the atmosphere, staff generosity, and fare, however I was particularly peeved by a last-minute change in the drinks eligible for happy hour. When we set the happy hour up over the phone with the manager, it was indicated that beer, wine, and well drinks would all be $5. When we arrived at the bar, the bartender manager upstairs let us know that the well drinks were actually no longer part of the happy hour and they'd be $9 instead. I wish they had kept to their word or at least told us about this change in advance... Still, a good time was had by all. I greatly appreciate Bloom's Tavern opening their doors to our group. Overall 3.5/5 for the personal slight re: the well drinks (ugh how I wish there were half stars on Yelp, but sorry, going with a 3).

Yelp
So the wife is eating out with a friend so I decided to eat out as well with my dog Bailey. I had the Buffalo wings. Extra crispy hot. They come in 1 temp but we're good. $15 for 7 wings. I got a side of bacon for my dog. He loves bacon. But really who doesn't love bacon? That was $2 And that's a steal. 6 bucks a bottle beer I can live with that. So overall a thumbs up. I saw people eating the chicken pot and Tatar tots. Both looked good but I am just not that hungry so gladly give it a try next time.
