Sorry to do another review on fish and chips, but I had the perfect fish and chips tonight and had to give praise where it's due. I've eaten a lot of fish and chips in the pubs and bars of Manhattan and there are a lot of good ones! Some of the better ones, however, still were a bit off somehow whether it was the texture or cut of the fries or the texture or type of batter. Even still, some places use haddock and others flounder.
The one I had tonight from Bloom's Tavern is the best I've eaten so far. I had it delivered because I was working late, but it still was hot on arrival. The fish was cod, which is what should always be used in my opinion. 2 medium sized fillets fried with beer batter that came out crispy on the outside (a dry crust, not soggy or greasy), enough so that you could hear the fork breaking the crust. The cod was fresh, flaky and very satisfying when biting into it...imagine all those ingredients including the lemon juice, malt vinegar and their home made tartar sauce all getting into your belly. Further, the fries were some of the best I've had...medium-sized and still crispy after delivery (not too skinny, crunchy or greasy)...fried in a way that a lot of places can't copy. I don't think that I am too off base on this one, but please take the opportunity to try it once and give me your opinion.
