The 17 Best Affordable Sushi Restaurants In Chicago

"Blowfish is a good sushi spot in Edgewater with a casual neon-lit interior and plenty of seating. And those seats are often full of Bryn Mawr Red Line commuters grabbing some dinner when they realize that they forgot to get groceries. The sushi here is definitely tasty, but the main draw of Blowfish is its affordability. Most pieces of nigiri cost $4, classic maki hover around $8, and loaded rolls are all about $15. Plus, their combination sets are all $26 or less." - sam faye, adrian kane, john ringor

Google
My first experience at Blowfish was ABSOLUTELY Phenomenal!!!! The Sushi, Atmosphere, and even the price was well worth it and one of a kind! There was a very short wait time for the food, the customer service was outstanding and the price was worth paying and I absolutely hope to come back again upon my next visit to Chicago! Along with the sushi, the perfect sauce will be #KOMODOblack which is a smoky, mildly hot and all purpose sauce for Seafood, Chicken, Steaks, Pastas, and everything else edible!!!

Tonight I got the seaweed salad which is a large portion for an appetizer. Has cucumbers so hefty. Also got scallops sashimi which was fresh and the snowball. The white tuna was a bit over flamed for my taste. But overall great. Service was fast at 6pm on a Thursday. I love that there is a glass bottle of water on the table at the ready. Bathroom is clean. Staff nice and efficient.

Google
Amazing spot within walking distance—what a gem! The service was friendly and attentive, and the sushi was absolutely on fire. We started with the shumai, which was decent, but the real stars were the four signature rolls we tried. Each one was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The *Aloha* roll was refreshing and light, with tuna, yellowtail, salmon, crab, cilantro, jalapeño, and avocado wrapped in crisp cucumber and topped with ponzu—an incredible balance of textures. The *Creamy Scallop* roll was rich and indulgent, maybe a touch too creamy for our taste, but still delicious. The *Pressed Sushi* was hands-down our favorite—spicy tuna, snow crab mix, wasabi, red tobiko, and avocado topped with spicy citrus mayo and sweet soy—absolutely divine. The *Flaming Hamachi* was bold and zesty, with just the right amount of heat from the jalapeño sauce. One small thing to note: the sushi pieces are quite large, making them a bit tricky to eat in one bite—but we’re not complaining! We can’t wait to come back and explore more of the menu, especially the ramen we didn’t get to try this time around.

Google
Pretty tasty sushi such as Aloha and Crunchy Dynamite rolls. Philadelphia and California are also good. Liked classic (pork) ramen – delicious meet, good noodles, not spicy 👌🏼.

I've been coming here since the old location across the street, and it makes me so happy to see how successful they've been since expanding. I was diagnosed with celiac, so it was difficult trying to adjust to the fact I couldn't have everything from the menu anymore. Our waitress is one whom we have seen around for awhile and she was so kind in letting me know some of the rolls could be adjusted and made gluten free. She even brought gluten free soy sauce for me and gave reassurance (without me asking) that the rolls i got were made carefully! 🥹 I love it here and would recommend anyone, Celiac and non-celiac, to come here! For sure my favorite place in Chicago! 🍣❤️

Google
A lovely spot for ramen! The inside looks so elegant but you don’t have to wear black tie to eat there! The tofu ramen was so good and had such a great umami flavor to it. The staff were very nice and helped me figure out parking! Go with friends and share some tasty appetizers!

Google
The veggie sushi here is the sushi I daydream about, it is just so good. I hadn’t been here in a long while - not since it moved to its new location. But I was immediately reminded why it is one of my favorite sushi spots on the north side.

Google
Was excited to try but the tsunami roll was not as described. :( missing some items as you can see and random pickled item. I am allergic to certain things so this worries me. $16 Tsunami fresh tuna, hamachi, salmon, white tuna, eel, shrimp, octopus, cucumber, avocado topped with tobiko

Yelp
Back when I lived in Massachusetts and was starting the process of apartment hunting, I was looking at an apartment around the corner. In looking at the area and what is around, Blowfish piqued my interest even then! Though I don't live around the block now, when I realized I was nearby for a haircut, it was a no-brainer. I ordered the Tsunami toll, the Black Garlic Tonkotsu, and had an opportunity to try the Mochi Ice Cream. The Tsunami - you remember that "magical" gum from Willy Wonka? The one that as you chew the experience takes you through a three course meal? This is what this roll is like. Usually you bite into a piece, and get everything all at once. Here it comes in waves! It's an experience worth savoring! This is coming from someone who devours sushi like a wood chipper! The fish is very high quality, and there is a terrific and well thought out combination of ingredients to convey various textures and flavors. There is a little crunch, a little sweetness, lots of savoriness, and some bits that need a little more work that others. Lastly, and certainly not least they did not skimp on any ingredients whatsoever. But then there was the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen. I have to be honest with you folks, this is not something I'd order again. I did enjoy the broth. It was light, savory, and had just a little kick from the black garlic. The salt level was also perfect! In fact, it was one of the least salty ramens I'd had. In terms of the veggies. I generally enjoyed the use of greens for freshness and crunch, though I am not 100% they seamlessly integrated into everything else. The pork Chashu didn't work for me. Style-wise it was boiled without any "roasty" notes (though I suppose this is more a preference). Plus, I would have liked a little more. Where things go sharply downhill is the noodles. These were very overcooked, and the sheer amount of them knocked the balance of the dish way off. It became more like a bowl of noodles dressed with broth as opposed to something I would call a soup or a ramen. Mochi Ice Cream - now we're back to great. The green tea and mango flavors were prominent and delicious. The balance of mochi to ice cream was also superb. Where I want to give them massive props across the board is service. This is what allowed them to keep the five star rating despite a lackluster ramen. It was friendly, attentive, and my server worked with me to make things right after my disappointment. I was comped the ramen, and given a free mochi ice cream dessert. I might be a tough reviewer, but I do work to be fair. The vibe is sleek and modern. The use of space and color is a perfect answer not at all overdone combination of black, grey, gold/brown; and red!

Yelp
3.35 - Good food, fast service but often find myself spending far more than I'd like for a few rolls, especially when ordering in. We've dined in a few times and the service is good, the food came out quickly. The ambiance is decent, but pretty standard. Blowfish is mainly our go-to sushi spot for ordering in. The food arrives very fast and fresh.

Yelp
I have been here twice now, and left full and happy both times. Their sushi is fantastic, and the portions are HUGE! Most rolls Come with 8-10 Pieces, so it's a GREAT deal! This will absolutely be my go to spot for sushi! Their snowball appetizer is stellar, as well as their Sakura roll. Both have truffle on it, and it's just an AMAZING flavor!! The red dragon is a must try, and there was another roll it a crunchy beet that was delicious. i know it started with a F but can't remember the name Service is always excellent, and the vibe is here so chill. Pretty space and great mix of people, easy to make reservations. You'll definitely leave feeling full and content!

Yelp
Nice little spot with deliciously flavored food. Service was nice and the food came out very quickly. Loved the shishito peppers and the sauce that came on them. The ramen broth and toppings all went well together and same with the poke bowl. Highly recommend the pork buns!

Yelp
Ambience: very nice. You can celebrate a range of activities here due to the set up and decor. Service: They are very nice and attentive. They made sure we were enjoying our food and accommodated requests. Food: flavorful and nice portions.

Yelp
You had me at unagi Visited @blowfish_chicago and this was my second time here! They definitely expanded the restaurant which is wonderful for them and their sushi quality has not changed it's still so fresh and delicious as I remember:) pictured here is the shrimp tempura and spider roll and in the other two are unagi and dragon rolls The ambiance is so romantic and great for groups of people if you want to bring your friends for a lunch or dinner date, and the service is so sweet and very helpful:)

Yelp
Five stars for the Blowfish Contemporary Sushi & Ramen Restaurant in Edgewater. We came in as a group of 3 for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and made a reservation in advance but it wasn't needed, it wasn't too crowded in the restaurant. Our server was very friendly, we started our order with the Gyoza and Calamari appetizers - both were delicious, you get a big portion size of the calamari (at least enough for 3 people). For the entree, I ordered the flaming tuna poke bowl. That was absolutely amazing - it is a massive portion size I took half of it home for dinner the same night, lots of flavors and sauces and good amount of tuna in the bowl itself. The prices are very reasonable - I was expecting to pay more being in Chicago than I normally would for similar food in the suburbs but it was around the same pricing. Overall I'd recommend a visit - great food and service!

Yelp
Closer to 3/5. It was okay. You can see from the pictures. Ootoro sashimi came out a bit icey, not much marbling of the fat. Miso soup was okay, big size and a bit salty. The other rolls and shishito peppers all had the same issue of having too much sauce. Portions were huge (like look at the peppers!) but it was drenched in some teriyaki sauce and it was too intense for my palette. Sometimes less is more. Would not so recommend but maybe that's just me.

Paul W.

Yelp
Ramen, Poke and Sushi are all great. The service and quality of food is awesome. Only issue is the construction on the street (Bryn Mawr) on which it is located (temporary). The vibe is also very good. Go there and validate my experience

Yelp
What the hecky heck???? How have I not reviewed this joint??? This is me and The Queen's go to place when we want ramen but don't want to drive anywhere and get it. For a place that does delivery, Blowfish does a pretty good jog of getting your food to you while it is sill hot and that is a plus for me. They have the usual appetizers. We always get the Gyoza (pan-fried beef dumplings topped with sweet & sour sauce, and scallions), Shrimp Shumai (steamed dumplings topped with sweet & sour sauce, and scallions) and Pork Buns (Holland pork belly with sunomono salad in steamed buns). All are good, but pretty standard fare. Where Blowfish excels is in the ramen. I love their Classic Ramen with the "Tonkotsu" (pork) soup noodle topped with Holland pork chashu. I usually will request extra noodles and pork, or sometimes brisket added to it. This will create enough of a meal to cover two days. I love their Tonkotsu broth, it is as they describe, silky but I am going to throw in smooth as well. The Queen goes for the Beef Brisket Ramen because she loves brisket and spicy stuff. I don't mess with this one because of the chili peppers, but if you like it on the spicy side, this one is for you. The Doctor and The Queen are fans of the Salmon Sunrise Bowl (Fresh salmon, smoked salmon, edamame, avocado, scallions, shitake, mango, pickled cucumber, sesame seeds topped with shallots, creamy yuzu mayo, sweet soy sauce, wasabi ponzu, shallots, and tobiko). The Doctor says that is very fresh in flavor and he usually cleans his bowl when he orders this. California rolls were good, but by the time you get ramen and appetizers, you ain't got no room for them. We just might have to do a ramen free night in order to try out some of the rolls. For now, the ramen is it for us.

Yelp
I would give this place 4.5/5. The pricing of the food is very reasonable for the quality of the food. The salmon sashimi was fresh and buttery. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. Dishes I recommend are the garlic ramen, the pork bao appetizer, and the salmon sashimi. I'm excited to come back and try more items on their menu! Highly recommend that you give this place a try. There's plenty of parking around the area as well. Paid street parking and free parking in the neighborhoods. The inside of the restaurant looked like a fancy New York style bar. I loved the modern, sleek aesthetic of the restaurant.

Yelp
Excellent sushi and great locations! Literally like two blocks away from my brother in laws place, also my second time visiting this place. They are always always very busy but service is always top notch. Food is amazing and not enough can be said. The ramen bowl is a must!!! Trust me you will Not be disappointed. It is loud with some soft music playing in the background but when you have good company and good food the loudness can be tolerated. We ordered: Order Kara-age chicken Pork buns Firecracker roll Black garlic tonkotsu ramen No picture of pork bun or Kara-age chicken but so so so good. They don't take reservations since they are so busy
google avatar

Fontazia B.

Yelp
Made a reservation got seated quickly. Service was great food was amazing prices were decent the ambiance was spectacular! The prices of the drinks were a little pricey for the size but only thing that wasn't good was they only excepted 4 cards to pay if you plan on splitting the bill more than 4 ways definitely recommend trying another sushi spot that excepts more and I would check/call ahead of time to see if it's possible
google avatar

Casey S.

Yelp
Had a great delivery session of poke bowl and AMAZING bao buns. Very happy with my decision. Food: We ordered some gyoza, bao buns, and I specifically got the Flaming Tuna poke bowl which was outstanding. The bao was made perfectly with a combination of light and chewy and the flavors of the poke bowl was amazing. Service: Delivery only. Aesthetic: Delivery only.

Yelp
A fantastic neighborhood spot! I have been here many times and have been lucky to try a variety of the menu. Everything has been consistently well done and delicious. The portions are generous and pricing affordable. Some highlights: Dragon Roll: You really can't go wrong. The shrimp tempura is fresh and warm with that satisfying crunch we all know and love. Sweet Potato Roll: This might be my favorite menu item. I routinely think about the crunchy bits and sweet sauce. Seared salmon and scallop appetizer: Outstanding. The flavors are on point, the fish is fresh, and for good bougie measure it is served on seashells. Don't sleep on this! Shrimp shumai: Tender and flavorful! This disappeared from the table quickly. Keep up the great work, Blowfish! Here's to many more visits.

Yelp
Wonderful presentation, very fresh and service was great. Our party of 8 enjoyed appetizers and 7 sushi rolls. Everything was wonderful. The new space is beautiful and clean. Definitely will be back!!
google avatar

Don S.

Yelp
Food is generally good. Service is usually slow because they staff 1 or 2 servers and they are responsible for the carry out orders as well.

Lori S.

Yelp
I don't know who is rating this 5 stars. All the fish is the texture of cat food. One of the rolls we ordered was supposed to have shrimp in it and even that was the texture of cat chow. At no point could we find a solid piece of fish in the 4 rolls we ordered (and the pineapple chicken was all gristle) I'm throwing away $100 of food because it's awful. We live in the neighborhood and were so hopeful this could be our go-to place. Total bummer. I usually am only motivated to go to yelp to rave and recommend. This was just so bad that I felt compelled to write this sad review.
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
Seriously good sushi. I ordered two specialty rolls and they were insanely balanced, fresh and flavorful. I'd say it easily overshadowed the ramen which was pretty typical and lost appeal halfway through. The ambiance and dimmed lighting takes the restaurant to a whole new level. I recommend coming here on a weekday to avoid the crowd. Tables filled up quickly and there was a queue nearly out the door by the time I finished eating! -AT
google avatar

Gesselle C.

Yelp
The ambiance is young and hip with soft house music playing in the background and purple neon outlining this small establishment. The service is quick and super friendly by accommodating servers. The food is delicious. We had the karage and calamari to start both made to order crispy, fresh and tasty! It's a local haunt thats another Edgewater gem! Good job Blowfish - we'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing customer experience Always attentive but at the same time respectful! Ordering take out is always so easy with them being organized and having an accurate time in which I can walk down to grab my food from my place within the time given. And best part, they REPECT THEIR OPEN HOURS. Not like some local businesses out here

Joseph Z.

Yelp
This is my favorite sushi spot! I never make a reservation and always get lucky & seated right away. Food is great and the prices are not bad.
google avatar

M F.

Yelp
We like this place. I am fine with rather simple sushi, but Blowfish serves theirs with more toppings and sauces, generally speaking. They recently ish moved into a much larger space and this is appreciated as we always had to wait for a table in their old space. Service is always friendly and attentive. Busy but not too loud. I usually get a bowl (hyper chirashi?) with a bunch of fresh seafood, rice and sauce. Very good, nice textures and flavors. Bf usually gets the rolls/maki. All very good. Some rolls are better than others and I forget which ones he likes best. We celebrated a family member's bday in the late summer and had a very nice time.

Etrit

Yelp
Very very good as a frequent sushi eater I would recommend. Delicious food. The rest of this is filler
google avatar

Joseph M.

Yelp
I've been going here for years and have tried numerous things on the menu. And they're all solid and reasonably priced as far as sushi restaurants go. Whether it's the sushi, the appetizers, poke bowls, or ramen, you'll leave here satisfied. My favorites are the tiger shrimp tempura, crunchy dynamite roll, and the salmon sunrise poke bowl.

Kate P.

Yelp
The Red Dragon is a must when coming here! Super nice staff and interior. They dim down the lights which was nice. Overall food 10/10 Service 10/10. Would 100% go again.
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
The new space is BEAUTIFUL, ramen is always super delicious, and sushi is always outstanding!!
google avatar

Bilguun B.

Yelp
The best sushi in chi town. Near redline. Everything on the menu is amazing. Fire cracker roll was the most amazing
google avatar

Anthony P.

Yelp
Go to Blowfish! The food has always been incredible, and the new restaurant creates a great dining experience! The staff are always friendly, the ramen is likely the best in the city and my partner really loves the sushi. We usually get takeout but will return to eat in person more often in their new space. We went with some friends visiting the area for the holidays and they loved it as well. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Rolando Q.

Yelp
Blowfish is a hidden gem for ramen lovers. Their bowls are packed with authentic flavors that hit the spot. The cozy ambiance adds to the experience

Leah T.

Yelp
I order from here regularly and thoroughly enjoy their menu. You can tell they pay attention to all the small details. The quality is consistent and I would recommend to any sushi lover.
google avatar

Maria F.

Yelp
I've ordered pick up and delivery from Blowfish many times, as it's a great local spot for sushi and Ramen! But today I decided to dine in with some friends, and I was very happy with my experience. The restaurant is small which gives it an intimate, cozy vibe. I was greeted by the chefs behind the counter immediately upon my arrival and assisted by the hostess right away. We made a reservation, but they also accept walk ins. I love ordering an array of apps to split. My personal favorites are the edamame, hamachi, karage chicken, and pork buns. For our meals, I ordered the spicy tuna roll (classic), my friend ordered a spicy poke bowl, and my other friend ordered the tonkatsu black garlic ramen. We enjoyed everything and we're stuffed by the end of the meal!

Matthew S.

Yelp
Great prices and menu options. Unfortunately, got food poisoning from my visit on 5/6/2024. I do want to go back in the future to give them another shot. 1. The flaming tuna poke bowl had way too much sauce. This made it unenjoyable to eat, but the rest of the ingredients were great. I will order this again in the future, ask for less sauce, and expect to thoroughly enjoy it. 2. I also ordered the pork buns, which I had never had before anywhere. Really enjoyed them!! 3. I had great service. 4. *I got food poisoning from eating here.* I hadn't eaten yet that day and it was 9pm. I got strangely full and bloated early on in the meal after trying both the dishes I ordered. I kept eating because I knew I needed some nourishment. I eat sushi all the time (for 12 years)--I'm from Seattle and have never ever had any issues with sushi before. I would normally be able to finish this amount of food, but had to stop about 75% of the way through because I was getting more and more physically uncomfortable with each bite of the poke bowl. On the 2-block walk home, I was feeling very lethargic and unwell, which is abnormal. I usually feel great after eating sushi / a poke bowl. I took pepto bismol and laid down. I wasn't improving, and about 3 hours later, I felt the need to vomit and ran to the bathroom and spent the next hour rotating between the floor and the toilet. Not only was this a miserable experience, it was the day I finished moving to the neighborhood with zero support from friends, where practically everything went wrong. I was exhausted, hungry, bank account drained from moving expenses, and just needed a break / reward / delightful treat. All I wanted was a break. Afterward, all I wanted was to jump off a building. Will update my review after visiting again soon, once the idea of eating here doesn't make me nauseous anymore. Everyone, including my roommates, raves about the quality vs. cost here, so I do want to visit again since it's so conveniently located and easy on the wallet.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
This was a cute little place. We were seated quick and the food was served quickly. The Classic Ramen was pretty good. We definitely would order again. My favorite Ramen so far. And I have had some Ramen in different states. The Crunchy Dynamite Roll was a great roll for a cooked roll. Love the toppings on it. We also had the edamame and it was good but kind of spicy. Oh. The last thing we had and forgot to take a picture. The appetizer, Tiger Shrimp Tempura, was very yummy and great for the person that doesn't like much spice on it. Ohhhh. Also. I love when my water is cold. And they definitely brought cold water to refill glasses.
google avatar

Larissa K.

Yelp
Still my favorite sushi place in the area! Ordered food to go this time. This place never disappoints!
google avatar

Pinkie F.

Yelp
Dine-in, carry-out, or delivery I've never been disappointed. On my own I'll eat at the bar and watch the chefs create all sorts of goodies. One of my favs is the Sushi Deluxe, where chef selects 6 pieces of nigiri with spicy tuna roll. Another treat is the pressed sushi. The chef and servers really know their stuff and want to make you happy - and they always do! It is a great place for a date - not too loud.
google avatar

Gil S.

Yelp
Decided to have sushi for dinner and I don't leave far from there. Did a takeout order for 2 sushi rolls (Philadelphia and Unagi and Cucumber). They both were amazing Philadelphia had salmon, rice, and cream cheese. The Unagi had bbq eel, cucumber, and sweet soy sauce. Everything was fresh and delicious. When I went there the place was packed already. I have been there before the place is small and it still has room for people to move around. Next time I'm craving sushi I will go there and bring a friend or two.

sarah m.

Yelp
This was my favorite sushi and ramen in the city until I had to move away a few years ago. If I ever come back, Blowfish will be my first stop. Everything is delicious and reasonably priced. I've been here at least 10 times and it was 5 stars every time. I live near Detroit now and we have decent food...... But for real, if you're wondering if this is THE spot, it is. Just go.

Matt Y.

Yelp
Ordered from them a few times and love it! New place is great too for in person dining
google avatar

Rahul G.

Yelp
Loved their beef brisket ramen. Huge portions and excellent service. Also, their sushi is top notch. Restaurant gets packed after 7 pm.

Yelp
Came here as a second option considering Rakkan Ramen down the street just opened and I wanted to get there for their grand opening, but unfortunately the line was way too long. My friend and I ventured a little north to Blowfish where he had been before and had good things to say. I got a spicy roasted garlic miso ramen bowl and he got the black garlic tonkotsu ramen bowl. I really liked mine, and I feel like it was just about the right amount of spice level. I can for sure go higher, but it was enjoyable and mild. I thought the broth was decent too! Overall, the service was excellent. The ladies who came to our table were really friendly and I'd go back just for the nice service. I'll have to return for sushi as well!

kevin n.

Yelp
Great food, HORRIBLE waitress/host, managed to take a picture of the lady, she ignored everyone who was not white and after calling her out on it she rolled her eyes, extremely rude and not attentive, upon ordering she walked away while ordering and took thee menu after telling her we are keeping the menu to order more food, was not a busy evening, I came on feb 23 around 7:00pm and was treated horrible, came for dinner, would NOT come back, please be warned this lady is racist and needs a reality check!
google avatar

marc d.

Yelp
Always a very reliable dine in or take out. Great quality, creative, modern sushi. Beware that it's a pretty tiny space and even with a reservation, you might have to wait, but worth it.

Jane

Yelp
Eh.... Food is okay but if you have a thing for spicy ramen. I do not recommend!! The give out small portions of spicy chili
google avatar

Ron B.

Yelp
We went here before the pandemic and had the best ramen ever, but didn't get around to returning until last night, and we weren't disappointed. My wife had a spicy crispy tuna roll which was as good as the name implies- crispy and a bit spicy with a perfect combination of consistency and flavor I ordered the roasted garlic miso ramen with pork, spinach, fresh corn kernels, a bit of hot peppers and other tantalizing ingredients with all the umami that one could want. There was also a nice selection of sakes. The service was relaxed but friendly and efficient, and given the quality the prices were more than reasonable. We don't live nearby, but I'm eager to return again to try something new.
google avatar

Paris R.

Yelp
Food and service is very good. In love with the Ramen and calamari dish. Relaxing place
google avatar

Yelp
Food was very good. I order for delivery and was not disappointed. They have ramen, sushi, you can't kise

Yelp
The food was delicious to say the least ( best in town) and the waitresses were all so nice. Not to mention the new location looks aesthetic and modern . I would absolutely recommend people to try their new location.

Yelp
Best sushi in chicago! The sashimi was great too! Of special note is the wide selection of vegetarian sushi... they are creative and delicious! The seaweed salad on marinated cucumbers is also a treat!
