"We've got a bone to pick with the BLT franchise and their fish establishments. We didn't totally rip BLT Fish in our initial review, but it's definitely an extremely underwhelming and overpriced restaurant. We had remembered liking their less expensive, laid back Fish Shack more, but a recent trip has changed our minds. It's a shame too, because that menu is right up our alley - fried fish sandwiches, oysters and beers are a few of our favorite things. But I had a feeling there could be a problem after reaching out to my buddy who lives across the street to find out his favorite thing to get here. His response was, "food poisoning." Oh boy. Now that's obviously more humor than anything else, but I have to say, that lobster roll made us sick to our stomach. I like to consider myself a connoisseur of such delicacies, and BLT Fish Shack's roll is one of the worst I've ever had. It came out looking like chunky lobster chowder on a bun, with aggressive and peculiar seasonings. All that and it's $26. This thing wins the distinguished award of bring the only lobster roll to ever survive a date with this guy. At the end of the meal, all that remained was half a lobster roll, left on the plate, passed over by an entire table of seafood lovers. That's a sad situation. We're being a little harsh here, and the reality is that BLT Fish Shack on the whole isn't THAT bad, but it should be better. The majority of the raw bar and appetizers will get the job done, but we just can't stop thinking about that awful lobster roll. After another sour experience with their fish establishments, we've decided that the BLT crew might just want to stick with steak. Oysters/Raw Bar BLT Fish Shack has one of the biggest and most complete raw bars in all of Manhattan. In the mood for crab? Choose from Jonah, Alaskan King or Dungeness. Clams? You can have either Littleneck or Topneck. There are also periwinkles, whelks and pretty much anything else from the sea that tastes good on ice. We've certainly had some nice crab and lobster selections in the past, but overall the quality and presentation could be better. Our most recent sampling of oysters, a combination of Kumamoto, Wellfleet and Spinney Creek, tasted fine but looked a little strange, like they were matted down in the shells and weren't sucked very well.Tuna Vegetable Tartare A nice sized helping of raw tuna with an assortment of vegetables, but this pales in comparison to the tuna tartare dishes we've become accustomed to at BLT Prime and BLT Steak.Steamed Mussels with Fries These are the best thing on the Fish Shack menu, hands down. We're freaks about mussels around here and give these our seal of approval. These come served in a white wine sauce with onion and other goodness. It could use a little more garlic, but on this menu, we're not complaining.Crispy Fish Tacos A nice helping of fish tacos in soft tortillas, but nothing worth coming for. We're not sure what exactly is crispy about these as they're a bit of a sloppy mess, and the fried fish is smothered in some kind of green spicy sauce that isn't good.Lobster Roll Epic fail. Read above. It's so embarrassing that I even mis-tweeted its photo (meant to tweet the crispy fish tacos, but this slop was dying to show its face). At least they were playing a good tune.BLT Tuna Sandwich The table next to ours was eating this and it looked like a slam dunk. Wrong. Hard boiled egg slices on a seared tuna sandwich? No thanks. We had a couple bites of this and that was enough. We did, however, eat every french fry that came with this. Fish Shack does do some damn good fries. Food Rundown Garlic Bread with Cheese It's no popover, but this garlic bread is a pretty great way to start off a meal. Respect to BLT for always making a good first impression with their table bread." - Andrew Steinthal

Located just steps from Union Square park in the Flatiron area sits another gem in this burgeoning neighborhood. After a couple of happy hour drinks we looked around for some light and tasty dinner options. Seafood sounded like a good choice and BLT Fish has a great selection. We sat on the top floor in a cozy booth and began our feast under the skylight. The only issue we had with the menu was that it was too big and everything looked too good! We finally settled on some raw bar items and a bunch of smaller plates. Oysters, crab legs, you name it…the boyfriend was feeling good after some post work cocktails and got a bit out of hand, ordering nearly everything he liked on the menu, and I didn’t object. Each dish was a complete delight to the palate; though not the wallet. You pay up for the beautiful and comfortable setting and the seemingly ocean to table freshness; but it’s definitely worth the price.

We came to do their all-you-can-eat mussels. Our visit began on a bit of a rocky start, with us having to wait over 40 minutes despite having a reservation. They were apologetic once we were seated and they did send us complimentary crab dip once we were seated, a gesture which would have been much more effective if it had been offered at the bar during our wait. But mussels. Let’s get to the mussels. You have your choice of two preparations – the traditional white wine or their beer/bacon option, and you can choose to change types from round to round. And I liked that as you opt for subsequent batches, you can either get a full or half order. Smart, since eventually, you max out. While the white wine might be the classic preparation, I was all about the bacon one (beer or no beer – you couldn’t even taste it). The flavor was rich and added the little something that mussels need from tasting just ordinary. And the fries were thin, fresh, and crispy – just right for soaking up all of that wonderful bacon sauce.

One of the best seafood places in NY. Just off union square, yet spacious with 2 floors and high ceilings. Everything is super fresh. I recommend the variety plateau for appetizer. Dinner for 2 selections creates a great way to bond.

Fancy upstairs, laid back ground floor. Downstairs is called Fish Shack and has things like bar specials and all you can eat mussels on certain days but the wait can get very long and the service isn't the best. Upstairs is a fine dining experience to match the other BLT restaurants around the city.

the fish shack downstairs is the true gem in this place, fresh oysters, raw bar. the lobster roll is a standout. we enjoy going time and time again as there is something for everyone. they even do burgers and steak. of course it doesn't hurt that blt is known for that too.

A bistro that's named not for a lowbrow sandwich, but for high-minded chef/owner, Laurent Tourondel, BLT Fish is a good restaurant with a dual personality. On the ground floor it's clam shack casual, reservations are not accepted, and blackboard specials include steamed clams, meaty lobster rolls and apple pie. Upstairs is far more formal, a place in which corporate card carriers dine beneath a fantastic retractable skylight roof and chow on wonderful dishes like grilled octopus salad and whole citrus-infused sea bass that's filleted tableside.

We used their upstairs party room. We felt very special. The room is bright and very modern. Our food and wine were exellent! The service was terrific. What a great choice.

the fish shack, on the first floor should be a separate review than blt fish. the service is subpar, and the food seems to be cooked by line cooks with no culinary skill. a bit of a dissapointment to associate this place with the more famous blt fish, and i suspect that is why their reviews are not as good as blt prime and blt steak.
