Are Mail-Order Meal Kits Doomed? | Eater

"Founded in 2012 and once valued at roughly $2 billion within a few years, this mail-order meal-kit company grew quickly but has since struggled: by March 2018 it controlled about 35% of the U.S. meal-kit market yet lost more than 200,000 customers between September 2017 and September 2018 and saw its stock plunge from a June 2017 IPO price of $10 to an all-time low of $0.66 later that year. Critics and customers point to high ongoing cost after introductory promos, the subscription model’s tendency to train novice cooks who then cancel, substantial packaging and shipping waste, and fulfillment problems such as late, incomplete, or spoiled shipments; still, many users note responsive customer service and prompt refunds. In response, the company has shifted strategy—pulling back from at least one big-box retail partnership in late 2018 due to shelf-space/seasonality issues, rolling out cheaper, stripped-down “Knick Knacks” that require customers to supply their own produce and protein, offering limited non-subscription ordering via an online retailer in the NYC area, and refocusing on attracting “high-quality” long-term subscribers while aiming for profitability in 2019." - Whitney Filloon

Blue Apron Tries To Save Itself With Cheaper, Stripped-Down Meal Kits | Eater

"Once a darling of the meal-kit boom that went public in mid-2017 and saw its stock collapse to roughly a tenth of its IPO price by late 2018, this meal-kit business has tried multiple pivots to arrest declining demand. Its latest product, dubbed “Knick Knacks,” are $7.99 pared-down kits that require customers to supply their own protein and produce and include pre-portioned spices, sauces, grains and dairy in four current varieties (e.g., Mexican-Spiced Chicken Quinoa Bowl, Creamy Shrimp Gnocchi) available for delivery in the NYC area. Other experiments have included selling discounted kits through a warehouse-club partnership (a short-lived rollout pulled in November 2018), a limited-time celebrity recipe collaboration, an on-demand same/next-day kit offering without subscription, and a tie-up with a weight-loss brand to create diet-friendly subscription meals (with a small acquisition fee paid for converted members). Observers remain skeptical that these moves will revive appetite for bulky, pre-portioned meal deliveries." - Whitney Filloon

First time going to Blue Apron's website. They don't even let you browse before making you complete a test to prove you aren't a robot. Its one of those "slide" puzzle tests and my mouse has been acting up (probably low battery) so the first 2 times I tried it said it wasn't good enough, got it perfect on the 3rd one...still blocked me. I've tried refreshing, exiting browser, etc. and it still says I'm blocked. Guess they lost a customer forever.

There is no cancel subscription option on the app. They only allow pausing the subscription . If I can pay an order via the app, I should be able to cancel via the app. I’ve included a screenshot of the directions for canceling your subscription, but if you read through it, the only option is pausing it.

I LOVE Blue Apron! I’ve been a subscriber since 2016. I’m a foodie and a serious cook. I thought meal kit delivery services were for people who didn’t know how to cook come or who didn’t like to cook. Boy, was I was wrong. I first learned about Blue Apron after reading an interesting article about one of their competitors. It made me reconsider my views on meal kit delivery services. I decided to research all the other meal kit delivery services, so I could find the best one. I did extensive research on ALL the available options before deciding to try Blue Apron. I’m glad I did. Although I have tried a few other meal kit delivery services over the years, Blue Apron remains #1. Their competitors aren’t even a close second. Like most businesses, Blue Apron has gone through some changes over the past 10 years. My favorite Blue Apron years were pre-pandemic, when there was more of an emphasis on recipes from around the world, and the occasional use of unique ingredients, such as pink lemons and black garlic. Blue Apron has shifted its business model to become more inclusive and appeal to a broader range of customers, which I understand. That’s just good business. I look forward to receiving my Blue Apron box every Saturday. I usually order 3 two-serving meals. I usually choose Customer Favorites and new recipes, and the occasional old favorite. It’s so nice and convenient having everything I need to make these meals delivered to my doorstep. Not only does it save me time, but it also prevents food waste because Blue Apron sends me exactly what I need for my three meals. Gone are the days of buying an entire bottle of a spice that I’m only going to use once. With Blue Apron, I enjoy getting to try new recipes. I also learn new cooking techniques, and interesting ways of using new ingredients. I appreciate that my not only are my Blue Apron meals delicious, they are nutritionally sound. Blue Apron caters to a variety of dietary needs. They also use high-quality ingredients. There has been the occasional issue with a missing ingredient or a box not delivered on time. Whenever that has happened, Blue Apron customer service has been outstanding! They are highly responsive and do whatever is necessary to make things right. Earlier this week, I tried Bang Bang Shrimp, and Black Bean & Zucchini Enchiladas. Both were excellent! Tonight, I’m cooking Balsamic Chicken & Mashed Potatoes with Sautéed Green Beans & Almonds. Next week, I will be trying Spicy Chimichurri Shrimp & Orzo with Zucchini & Feta, Pork Udon with Shredded Cabbage, Bok Choy & Togarashi, and Beef over Curry-Spiced Rice with Creamy Cilantro Sauce. If you’re like most people, you have your small repertoire of recipes that you make often. If it’s Tuesday, it must be time for tacos. If it’s Friday, you’re probably ordering pizza delivery. You probably eat too much fast food, and spend too much money doing takeout. If you feel like you’re in a meal rut, and want to prepare restaurant quality meals in the comfort of your own home, give Blue Apron a try. I promise you won’t regret it! I’ve included photos of a few of the Blue Apron meals I’ve made. If they don’t appeal to you, keep in mind that I am a foodie and I’m seeking recipes that are unique. Blue Apron has all kinds of meals available, including family friendly, vegetarian, low carb, high protein, 15-minute meals, 600 calories or less, craft, and premium. They also have add-ons such as appetizers, sides, desserts, and easy breakfast recipes. One-Pan Beef & Udon Stir-Fry Spanish Trout & Saffron Potatoes with Shishito Peppers, Labneh & Olives Thai-Style Chicken Curry Noodles with Carrots, Poblano & Peanuts Miso-Maple Glazed Salmon with Fried Rice & Spicy Mayo Lime-Honey Chicken & Farro Bowl with Sweet Corn & Poblano Pepper

I (much like most of the folks on here) never ordered. I put my card in (as most places have you do, even if you are just browsing what they offer). I didn't order anything, I was window shopping. I will grant you that I didn't notice the 6 weeks worth of charges (I usually take out cash and pay for things that way, this don't use my card very often). I called. Sent all info (and then some) to multiple people multiple times. Turns out (shockingly) "There is no record of your name/email slash phone numbers /card/chargers on file. I even gave extra information such as old email addresses that I only use when I don't really want to sign up for things. My bank already knows and they are working on it as well. I am obviously upset because obviously even if it didn't come from Blue apron itself. The fact that on my bank statement it says it comes from Blue apron means that ultimately they're the ones responsible right? I know that if I was a company and somebody else was making my company look bad I would probably want to investigate that. I mean that's why they hire high power lawyers right?

I have placed 4 orders. Two arrived fine. One was missing several meals. One didn’t show up at all. Terrible logistics!!

I have not ordered Blue Apron for about 2 years now. I saw a promo and logged onto see what meals they were offering never placing an order. I saw that they billed my debit account for $59.94 even though my account had a new expiration date and security code. Called BA and they rectified the issue but it is concerning that this is able to happen . I told the rep to close my account. Not happy that they were able to charge me. Lucky I check my account daily.

Tried their premade meals. Was planning on mostly lunches. Did an order of 8 meals. First 2 weeks the meals had high percentage of the meals expiring with in a couple of days. The third and final order they all expired within 3 days. The food was pretty good. But not worth the cost if you can’t even get to all the meals. Very disappointing.

We have been using Hello Fresh and wanted to see what Blue Apron has to offer. Well our food delivery arrived over 2 days late and the food was room temperature. They issued a refund which was expected but didn't offer a credit or anything to help keep a new customer. Anyway our weekly dinners are ruined and we had to scramble and go grocery shop for the week. I just very surprised that they didn't even try to keep a new customer happy and after reading these reviews am hoping that they don't charge me again. Good bye BA!
