Restaurants Have Gotten Really Expensive. Boston Diners Share How They Are Adapting. - Eater Boston

Boston’s Second Blue Bottle Coffee Opens This Weekend - Eater Boston

"Downtown Boston’s 'pregnant building' is giving birth to the second local outpost of California-based Blue Bottle Coffee this weekend — on Mother’s Day, nonetheless. The bulbous 100 Federal St., now embellished with a fancy glass atrium known as the 'the Exchange,' is Blue Bottle’s newest home, just a few months after the coffee chain first touched down in Massachusetts with a Harvard Square location (40 Bow St.). A Prudential Center location is also in the works. Expect plenty of coffee as well as liege-style waffles and toast from the new downtown location of Blue Bottle, a one-time indie brand in which mega corporation Nestle gained a majority stake last year." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

The lady who served me (with short dark hair) seemed more set on telling me regular milk was almond milk, than greeting me with a smile and saying hello and thanks. Coffee (with regular milk) was good though and the other staff were more friendly. Also, whilst perhaps not possible when busy, if staff are standing about doing very little - perhaps they can deliver coffee to the tables, rather than shout for customers to get their own.

The founder of Blue Bottle Coffee is James Freeman. He personally took orders for coffee beans roasted in San Francisco at the market every weekend. He weighed 60g of coffee beans on a scale, ground the beans, and sold hand-drip coffee using 94-degree water, which became a local specialty. To this day, following the founder's philosophy on coffee, he focuses on providing the best coffee taste rather than increasing the number of stores. Blue Bottle only uses beans roasted within 48 hours, and only uses eight menus and a single cup size. Since the barista extracts a cup of coffee using a hand drip, it is also very interesting to watch the process directly. Through the process, customers can see why the coffee they drink is special. Due to this, Blue Bottle's recognition worldwide is still not high, but no one can deny that the taste of the coffee is higher than Starbucks. While Starbucks focuses a lot on the space so that customers can stay comfortably, the taste of the coffee is not consistent from store to store. Even though Blue Bottle has a small and simple space, it focuses on providing customers with the best coffee and making them feel special.

Google
1 star for Blue Bottle. I finally decided to visit after a long time… and what a huge disappointment! The grinder hopper was dirty — clean that, seriously! The vibe was dead, awkward silence, and zero energy. The cashier stood there like a statue, and the barista looked miserable — you’re in Boston and at Blue Bottle, show some life! If you hate it that much, maybe it’s time for a new job. Service was awful and the coffee… honestly, it pains me to say, but TERRIBLE. They could at least offer a more pleasant varietal and improve customer service. I wouldn’t go back even if it were free.

Google
Small cozy coffee shop at the fancy Newbury street. You can savour the quality of coffee in the first sip. The service is awesome and the ham and cheese croissant as well. People may think it’s pricey but the quality of ingredients is high. So you pay for what you get. There is a bathroom for customers only.

If an ordered cold brew is ordered with less milk, more coffee - maybe do just that. Less milk, more coffee. Second day in a row where my order is more latte than cold brew. Please read the ticket!

Google
Blue Bottle Coffee on Newbury Street is an absolute gem! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The minimalist, cozy vibe made it the perfect spot to relax. I tried their pour-over, and it was hands down one of the best cups of coffee I’ve ever had. You can really taste the freshness and care that goes into every brew. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, making the experience even better. If you’re a coffee lover or just enjoy finding new places, I highly recommend stopping by! 5 stars all the way! ☕️🌟

Google
For all the coffee lovers out there, this coffee is absolutely delicious! While it might be slightly pricier than competitors like Starbucks, Thinking Cup, or Caffè Nero, it’s hands-down my favorite. The flavor is everything to me, and this coffee delivers—its rich aroma, smooth texture, and robust strength are truly amazing! The atmosphere here is just as great as the coffee. Ryan, the manager, sets a warm and welcoming tone that resonates throughout the team. The positive vibes make every visit a pleasure. I can’t recommend this place enough—it’s worth every penny!

Google
Fantastic coffee. I would highly recommend committing to the fact that if you want coffee here it’s going to take a little bit of time. So go in knowing that. It’s typical for a busy city location. The staff did a great job with getting our order together. There was a lot of people and it took about 10-15 minutes. So not bad at all. Really great atmosphere and there is a lot of people using the space to do school work in. I would recommend grabbing a drink and going. Enjoy the city, walk around, and enjoy your coffee. Check out my photos to get a sense of the space.

Yelp
Coffee is good as Blue Bottle goes but somehow I just always liked the location at the Pru better. Weird I know!! This place I guess is cozy but some people can spend a hell of a lot of time at the large communal table busy focused on something on their laptops and I feel bad chatting with a friend next to them (if I find a seat at all). I guess the open layout at the Pru suits me better

Yelp
The place was cute and clean. Blue bottle always has aesthetic and minimalist stores. The staff was very friendly also. The matcha however was just not if. Very bland tasting and it was in a paper cup so I could see if it was clumpy but it tasted a bit clumpy. Would come back for coffee but not the matcha

Yelp
Wandering the streets of Boston on a Sunday night... might as well grab a coffee, right? Well, that's what we did. Service was great and fairly quick. The place is well lit and clean. I had the cappuccino, which had a lovely design from the frothed milk, although I did take a sip before the pic because I could. :)

Yelp
My go-to order at blue bottle has to be their sweet latte. Simple but tastes soooo goood! The cafe interior is very aesthetically pleasing. This location is always busy tho so I usually just do grab and go

Yelp
I'm partial to this location because it was my first Blue Bottle experience (the first of many) and the windows make it really pretty :') I understand the hype; Blue Bottle is reliable and more importantly, reliably good. Iced Nola (not pictured), Hot Nola, and Iced Matcha were all perfect (no modifications needed); I had low hopes for the matcha at first but it exceeded expectations. The matcha could've been stronger, but that's because I usually prefer matcha strong enough to be a little bitter so this didn't detract from the overall experience. All drinks were creamy, rich in flavor, and very craveable. Iced Nola is our particular go-to!
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute interior and great newbury street location. I got a matcha latte and didn't totally love it because they didn't have any fruity flavor syrups. I hope they expand their menu to include more flavor options.

Yelp
Love love love Blue Bottle! Their coffee is always delicious and I absolutely love their matcha lattes! I personally like their New Orleans iced coffee and sweet latte. Both are a good balance of the bold coffee flavors and a touch of sweetness, without it being overpowering. Of course, then there's the iconic pour overs which are always so good. The location itself is small but mighty! There is a decent amount of indoor seating but it's more of a pick up your coffee and stroll the elegance of Newbury street! I have always had great service here, with kind baristas that offer great recommendations. One of my favorite things is that all of the milk based drinks come default with oat milk! So all the nondairy peeps don't have to be penalized for having an allergy or preference. They also have almond milk as an option and dairy milks if you prefer that as well. One of my favorite places in Boston!

Yelp
This is a small, upscale coffee bar. There is very little seating. I came around 4pm on a Tuesday for a pick-me-up hoping to work, and there wasn't an empty chair in sight. It was also quite loud, so maybe it's best that I didn't stick around inside to work. I did end up snagging a table on the sidewalk downstairs, which was nice. I could still connect to the wifi and get some work done. I had an iced americano, and it was pretty good. The coffee wasn't bitter or too acidic. It was a very light flavor. If you want a strong tasting coffee, add an extra shot.
google avatar

Kajal P.

Yelp
The coffee was SO good. I've been craving a cozy iced coffee, and the NOLA was the perfect addition to my afternoon stroll on Newbury St. The baristas were incredibly sweet and helpful too!
google avatar

Kara M.

Yelp
I've seen friends post pics of the iconic paper cup with the blue bottle on it, and since we don't have these in Texas I made sure to try it while visiting Boston! I went for the New Orleans style drink and grabbed a spinach pastry as well. My fiancé got a black coffee, and they specialize in drip coffee, so they make it to order. It was a bit pricy, but nothing more than your typical Starbucks order, and more unique and crafty. Overall, it was a good coffee and I would revisit. It's fresh, flavorful, and just what you order and expect.
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
Helpful tip: New Orleans Iced Coffee is the best if you're looking for an excellent sweet coffee. It's not too sweet, leaving you wanting another one. Also, their portions are somewhat small. I used to always go to Blue Bottle Coffee every day before I went to study at the Boston Public Library. The store itself is nice and vibrant. I love their coffee and their Belgium waffles. I just personally wish the portions were larger due to the prices. But this is a great coffee shop if you want to meet up with someone and chat, or if you just want to take a break from all the shopping you might do on Newbury street!

Yelp
I love the blue bottle coffee. I got a cardamom latte with oat milk recently and it was absolutely delicious (and beautiful). I truly love their coffee. I do not love their prices though. $8 for a latte really is crazy but they are delicious so.. do with that what you will.
google avatar

Frances L.

Yelp
The best cold brew ever! My favorite is the Spiced Nola. It's lightly sweetened, creamy and so smooth. I'd love to have one every day!!
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
This small tucked away Newbury location still has the same aesthetic as the NYC locations, and still has great espresso. I like their sweet latte with oat milk if you like a slightly sweeter drink. They have plenty of indoor seating given the level of activity (not that crowded either time I came versus NYC where some locations get a line out the door).
google avatar

Shuang Z.

Yelp
Clean and bright store space. The giant of bottle of cold brew cost $15. It tasted on the bitter side and it's an ok. But I loved the blue cold brew bottle I bought here. Have been using it to make my own cold brew since.
google avatar

Sana S.

Yelp
I waited 20 minutes for a cardamom latte and had to leave without my beverage to make a brunch reservation. It's unfortunate because I like their coffees.

Rachel K.

Yelp
Amazing coffee. The best cold brew I've ever had. Their hot coffee is a pour over, which is also really good. Cute place inside. I also got their egg bites which were really good.

Yelp
In the heart of Beacon Hill. Great spot to grab a coffee while shopping around the area.

Yelp
I've dreamed of checking out Blue Bottle for years, being a west coast girl. I finally made my dream come true while visiting Boston for work. The shop is on the upper business story of a shared business/living strip. They had an a-frame sign pointing me up the stairs to the shop. The shop is small but bright and clean. The staff was friendly. I ordered a pour-over coffee and a baguet breakfast sandwich. The coffee was fantastic - I savored it for a long time as I explored the city of Boston. The baguet was meh - It was a slice of cheese + ham on a baguet that was almost too hard to eat. So that is why they lose one star, unfortunately. I'll try a pastry next time. Happy coffee-sipping!

Yelp
Clean and ultra modern! Blue bottle is always a go-to city coffee spot for reliable quality - but high prices. This one on newberry street was a good spot for my morning meetings during WFH. Interior is small - only a handful of tables. Come with a charged laptop as outlets are limited. Lighting was a bit too institutional...if you're looking for a cozy spot for reading or relaxing I wouldn't recommend this place. However, with bright lights and white walls it's a perfect spot for conversations and/or trying to stay awake haha. 5 starts for great coffee quality. Liege waffle was a nice surprise - although it was $5. In short - recommended for people with money to spend and/or people who want a bright-productivity inducing space for working.

Yelp
This review is going to be short. Love! The end. But I couldn't do that to you fine Yelpers. When I see an Blue Bottle Coffee, I'm down to clown for their New Orleans Cold Brew. That hint of hickory just makes the drink and makes my heart sing. Are you feelin' me voodoo child?! This particular Blue Bottle has a steep climb up to the store. There are plastic walls preventing the customer from entering the store. You place your order thru the plexiglass and a few minutes later, you're sippin' on java love. Love! The end. *Now that is a proper ending :D
google avatar

Vivian D.

Yelp
Woooow let me tell you, I'm so hooked to Blue Bottle now. After trying their NEW ORLEANS (NOLA) COLD BREW with oat milk (important!!!!), I'm never going back to reg coffee with whole milk again LOL. It's smooth and creamy without feeling too thick. It has this butteriness to it that I love and quite frankly am addicted to. If it's your first time trying coffee, this cold brew is the one! For reference in case anyone was wondering, it's not bitter!! Subtlety sweet. I can't speak for the other drinks and food here, but trust me on the NOLA cold brew. Before COVID, I went here once and it's a relatively small shop but with plenty of seats. The baristas and cashiers I've encounter are super nice and helpful and made my first experience a good one. Definitely give this place a try!
google avatar

Stacey H.

Yelp
After trying Blue Bottle in NYC years back, I was so excited for it to open in Boston! With Covid, it's gone through ebbs and flows of ordering/receiving your drink via outside window, to now being able to go in. Their coffee is delicious, so are their treats (homemade waffles! Mmm). Whenever I'm on Newbury I like to change up my usual Starbucks run with Blue Bottle. Pricier? Yes. But tastes delicious, consistently. Order: - large cold brew, oat milk
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Decent coffee with modern indoor seatings and decor. Not a lot of tables so most people were standing on a Saturday morning.
google avatar

Mehrdad K.

Yelp
Very comfortable and nice staff to serve coffee. Nice environment and thanks to staff. Don't forget to get your coffee in a ceramic cup.
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
Great coffee. great pastries! I know blue bottle is a chain but felt like a nice change from a a Starbucks
google avatar

Justina B.

Yelp
This coffee place leaves me conflicted. My order: latte Pros: absolutely delicious latte. I'm very sensitive to bitter tastes, and they do an excellent job making a good not bitter latte. The interior is also a minimalist design as opposed to a warm cozy coffee house. Very friendly staff. Cons: $5.35 for a 12-oz (?) latte, before tip. Do I want to regularly pay $6.35 for a latte? absolutely not. Would I on special occasions? sure. I came here on a Sunday around 12 noon, and most of the seats were taken by folks who had stationed there with their laptops and personal work. This is fine, but considering the lack of seating during a busy time, this rubbed my feathers the wrong way. Also the merch is cool, and a pretty colour, but horribly expensive.

Yelp
I used to live in the Bay Area in the early/mid 2010s and Blue Bottle was one of my fav coffee shops in town. (And Philz!) Since I left, I've noticed Blue Bottle has opened more & more shops throughout the U.S., and they are now in Boston. I ordered a latte, and it was great, as is all the Blue Bottle coffee I've tried. It definitely is on the pricier side (I think it was $5.25 for a latte, oof)--but for a treat, I'll keep it in mind the next time I'm in this part of town. There's a couple of long tables for seating, but I'd say best enjoyed taking your cup of coffee & strolling Newbury or Comm Ave.
google avatar

Tanusree M.

Yelp
So good! We came here for a quick drink. I don't usually drink coffee but I really liked the New Orleans coffee. I got it iced with oat milk. Such a nice flavor, it's kind of chocolatey. Definitely give it a try.

Ana B.

Yelp
The size of their drinks is sooo small that it is frankly ridiculous. And ultra expensive. It looks like they are serving gold instead of coffee.
google avatar

Bruce F.

Yelp
Quality and service with a smile. I got an Americano. Lots of pie overs as well as espresso drinks
google avatar

Randy L.

Yelp
Blue Bottle on Newbury Street had a great design inside! I can't wait to one day sit in and talk with my friends! The vanilla iced coffee was good, wish I had asked for more cream though!
google avatar

Tuli S.

Yelp
The New Orleans iced coffee is delicious! The 12oz was ~4+ dollars which is a bit pricey but worth it IMO. The coffee was very smooth and had a nice aftertaste. I stopped by on a Saturday and the tables were full so we didn't sit inside. Service was quick & pleasant. Worth it for a coffee date!
google avatar

Ervi C.

Yelp
Such terrible experience. Ordered something very simple, a double espresso. What they serve cannot be called espresso, its dark liquid... served in a cup suitable for a latte. And I always leave a tip but this is downright abusive behavior. Would give zero stars if I could because this is not the first time it happens.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I really liked this place. The man at the counter was lovely. He is a young man, and he is very tall. He explained all the drinks to me. What patience! I was the only one in the store and I was on a date.
google avatar

Alyssa F.

Yelp
We stopped by Blue Bottle Coffee in need of a caffeine fix and hoping this place wasn't going to be an overpriced tourist trap given it's location on Newbury Street. I had low expectations and Blue Bottle Coffee blew them out of the water. Not only do they offer an assortment of single origin pour overs, they also have a nice selection of espresso-based drinks and a couple of food offerings. We've been back after our first visit and haven't been disappointed. I've tried both the cappuccino and the matcha latte. I would happily order both again! If you're in need of some caffeine/warmth, stop into Blue Bottle Cafe!
google avatar

Tish W.

Yelp
We popped in here for a daily caffeine fix while on Newbury street. I loved how light and airy the place was and the coffee had great flavor! I got a late and appreciate how the coffee itself was not very bitter.
google avatar

Saul O.

Yelp
The Service here it's Amazing follow by their Delicious Coffee, The staff are really friendly and Welcoming, it's a bit pricey than your regular Starbucks joint but it's worth the smoothness strong but tasty Delicious coffee... Ryan the manager is polite and they all remember my name... I absolutely recommend this place and my Fiancé who is also very picky absolutely loves it.

Panorea T.

Yelp
The waitress was very rude and was talking to us with an attitude. Terrible customer service and rude people. Don't go there!!

Beffrey W.

Yelp
Consistently the best lattes in Boston (and other cities I travel to as well). Very high attention to detail by the baristas and nice latte art as a bonus. Very happy that this location just opened up! My hope is that more locations are added to the Boston area and the financial district location opens up on Saturday and Sunday.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
I ordered three New Orleans Cold Brews at this location and was extremely disappointed. We unfortunately could barely taste any coffee at all, as there was SO much milk added. Really only tasted like iced milk, in all three drinks. For such expensive coffee, I feel like there should be more care put into making these drinks, as I've had it (and loved it) several times before.

Shams M.

Yelp
I usually prefer to stay away from franchises like Blue Bottle, but today on a cold afternoon on Newbury Street I had a craving for an oat flat white. Can't say I was disappointed. The espresso could have been a bit more flavorful but the milk was perfectly steamed and it really hit the spot.

Tom G.

Yelp
$ 8.00 for an egg and cheese sandwich enough said. If you only want a small coffee that's worse than dunkins this is your place.

Jackie V.

Yelp
Coffee was great but the staff was rude, particularly the Asian female employee. She could have just been having a bad day but that does not excuse her from having some proper manners towards the customers that she is serving. Condescending and rude. I most definitely will not be stepping foot back into that coffee shop and will not be recommending to anyone.
