The 33 Best Coffee Shops & Cafes In Chicago

"Coffee snobs of Chicago, we give you two Blue Bottles. There’s one at Wolf Point Plaza on the river and another newer location in the Tribune Tower. This is a much-hyped coffee chain from the Bay Area with a focus on pour-over coffee, so seek them out when high-maintenance caffeine is the only thing that’ll help you be your most productive self. The Wolf Point location has other coffee drinks (like the chicory-heavy iced NOLA) and a few pastries, but the real draw is a large patio overlooking the river. Inside, there’s plenty of seating spread out across multiple rooms, wifi, and a quiet jazzy soundtrack to help make drafting your mid-year SMART goals more tolerable." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru

Coffee Giant Blue Bottle Is Coming to San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Planned to open later next year in downtown San Diego, the chain’s second San Diego branch will occupy Tower 180 at the corner of First Street and Broadway (Flocke & Avoyer’s Urban Strategies Group represented the landlord). It will offer Blue Bottle’s full beverage lineup — espresso drinks, cold brew, and New Orleans-style iced coffee — along with pastries, toasts, and barista-led classes in coffee brewing and cupping." - Candice Woo

Google
Blue Bottle Coffee offers a bold cup of coffee while experiencing the downtown vibe of San Diego. Blue Bottle is a modern coffee shop with a minimalist feel. The friendly staff took my ordered, a cup of coffe. They took a moment to freshly prepared my drink, a delightful surprise. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. I was part of a group of five, so we sat outside, where we enjoyed the weather and the city. Next time you are in downtown San Diego, you may want to enjoy a moment at Blue Bottle Coffee.

Gabriela R.

Google
Theres absolutely no reason for it to be this expensive. 6.75$ for a latte, the coffee felt too roasted and bitter, which is not what you expect from a specialty coffee. Also it wasnt greatly made either, too hot and too airy, but this would be fine if it was good😅

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Outstanding coffee and service I first visited this Blue Bottle in San Francisco after a less-than-great breakfast experience across the street, and I’m so glad I did! Shane greeted me with a genuine smile first thing in the morning, and the coffee was absolutely amazing. I came back the next day… and then basically every day while I was in San Diego. Every visit was consistently positive — the coffee was top-notch, and the entire team was polite and welcoming. On my third visit, Shane remembered my name and my regular order — and even surprised me with my coffee on the house. That kind of personal touch really made my day and left a lasting impression. This will be my go-to spot whenever I’m in town. Thank you to Shane and the whole team for making mornings such a pleasure! Geza M.

Google
Since its downtown, parking can be a bit hectic. Place itself is spacious inside with lots of seating. They have an assortment of pastries along with a good coffee menu. Got the cafe latte with regular milk. Pretty solid, nothing spectacular. It’s a big overpriced compared to other local coffee shops with better coffee but based on location is expected.

Google
Blue Bottle Coffee is one of my favorite spots in California, and the San Diego location doesn’t disappoint. The iced Nola with oat milk remains a top choice, offering a smooth and well-balanced flavor. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the location is convenient, making it an easy stop. The service is also a highlight; the staff is friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. Definitely a great place to enjoy a good cup of coffee.

Google
The Guava danish was by far my most favorite baked good here! I ordered a single origin iced espresso and new seasonal Nola. The lady was patient in telling us information about our coffee so we could decide what we wanted. We came on a Saturday morning and it was surprisingly quiet lol but no complaints

Dennis D.

Google
Blue Bottle Coffee was exactly what I was hoping for - a delicious cup of coffee. The quality is definitely there, even if the prices are a bit higher than other spots. I do wish the inside felt a little cozier instead of the sterile, minimalist vibe, but that’s just their brand. If you’re after a great cup of coffee, it’s worth it!

Harry B.

Google
They have a good coffee and a wide selection of desserts. Good for a quick bite in the morning.

Yelp
You might want to sit down for this one. Listen, I like an independent coffee shop. Nothing against nation wide chain shops, but those tend to get a little sanitary, you know? A little cut and paste. Like, even the snarky of the barista is a little rehearsed. Consistency is cool, but you can get that at home. Sure there is economy of scale and yada yada yada... but small / independent shops are usually cool. And I've been in search of a new one in downtown San Diego. Most of the major ones have just not met the mark. Turns out a lot of them get their coffee from the same provider, so flavors don't change much. And frankly, a lot of the independent places lately seem a little cut and paste. If I'm wrong, message me and point out one cause I'll go. But the situation puts me in crux. It's late 5 AM, I'm downtown, it's Sunday, and I need espresso like an aging content creator needs something controversial to say to get traffic. For some reason, most of San Diego Coffee shops don't do early morning on weekends, which confuses me, because you'd think early morning and coffee in San Diego go together like parking meters and outrage does in San Diego. I digress. So, using the power of 4 AI tools, google, yelp and a fuzzy memory of downtown, I remember place called blue bottle. Which, honestly I thought was some sort of bottled water store or something I could cognate to a body problem. IDK, but the name doesn't scream coffee, and was almost lost to me as a place of coffee. I digress again. So, in search of a place that makes the condensed, refined liquid that properly blocks the adenosine build up so common on Sunday mornings, Blue Bottle met the criteria: they were down town, and they were open at 6 AM. Parking would suck. It did suck. But 2 outta three ain't bad. I didn't know it was a chain. In retrospect, might have made me wonder, but open and in the location were the spark. So, I find the aptly non coffee associated name place, and walk in. Now, purposeful coffee shops are ALWAYS places that seem a little bit like your living room or an industrial loft, right? Comfortable, cozy, thought provoking places that make you feel like you need to sit and think about something esoteric for a while. You can relax while you shake off several hours of sleep and become in sync. Sort of like a warm sweater, or a grey hoodie. Comfortable, enveloping, welcoming. Well. This place is lit quasar bright. Shadows simply do not exist. It felt like I needed step outside and put on SPF 1,000 and then walk back in. Clinically austere. A surgical strike against having any physical sensation other than squinting into the blinding light. If you took the operating room of a hospital and the cleanroom of a silicon chip manufacturer, mated them, then distilled that result, you'd have Blue Bottle. Nothing in sight says coffee, other than the menu on the wall. I wasn't sure that, in my morning haze, I hadn't walked into a place to get that long put off procedure by accident. But I digress, again. I know, focus on the task at hand; Espresso. Which they get right. Exceedingly right. I am not an expert, aficionado, or even mostly knowledgeable. But when that almost syrupy, dense, first hits the tongue, and the bright acidity follows.. and you get a smell in your noise like a that of a dark beer, you kind of know. And service. Wildly kind, despite the fact that it's just after 6AM on a Sunday and the only people out are people like me. No smarminess, no snarky. A kind offer of sparkling water to go with the espresso (so often not done). Walked to the table with a smile. Friendly , non-unctuous, banter behind the counter. So, Blue Bottle. Kudos. For literally doing none of something according the template of coffee shop existence, but literally setting the standard for espresso and service. Maybe turn the lights down about 300 kelvin, consider renaming to blue coffee or blue coffee bottle or coffee bottle, or ANYTHING THAT HINTS AT COFFEE, but keep the awesome employees and keep the espresso as is.

Yelp
The day finally came!-- and it wasn't what I expected. I tried Blue Bottle for the first time this summer in Chicago, and while originally I went for their Orange Cream NOLA, they didn't have it. So we tried a Yuzu Blackberry Latte that was amazing. But still I wanted to try their Orange Cream NOLA and San Diego had quite a few Blue Bottle locations. Blue Bottle's aesthetics will always please me so going into the store was a nice treat, but I fear that's where that ends for me. I fear I hyped up the Orange Cream NOLA a bit too much-- couldn't really taste any of the orange & cream was overpowering the coffee taste. We also got their NOLA Cold Foam and ran into the same issue. I will say their cold foam is insanely delicious and almost the texture of ice cream, I would have a cup of that by itself.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Best place to get delicious coffee. My favorite here is the NOLA. With so many coffee shops to choose from in downtown, I like this one, the best because it is clean, aesthetically, pleasing, and simple. Don't get me wrong I love all the hips or spots and the big brands but something about blue bottle and their qualities is always the best. The service here is the best! I forgot the girl who helped me but shoutout to you for recommending the Nola! Now my favorite drink ever. I'm obsessed.
google avatar

Aspen B.

Yelp
The coffee here is amazing with a smooth, strong flavor and a high quality taste, the best on my trip to San Diego yet. The staff was informative, pleasant and present. It is a clean, small modern looking coffee shop with nice lighting and ambience
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
This was my second visit to Blue Bottle, and honestly, I've been thinking about the Sweet Latte ever since my first. I'm not usually a plain coffee person. I tend to go for flavored drinks, but this one? Total game changer. I don't know if it's the oat milk (which they use as standard) or just how everything comes together, but it's perfect. Smooth, lightly sweetened, and just so good. It doesn't feel basic at all, just simple in the best way. I'm genuinely impressed. Also, the customer service was straightforward and no-frills, which I appreciate. Ordering was easy, and everything was ready quickly. The whole experience was smooth and hassle-free.
google avatar

Cari A.

Yelp
Came to Blue Bottle for the first time. It is currently located next to Mendocino Farms. I ordered their green tea. The tea bag the used was from Smith tea maker for $5.00. Pros: -clean establishment. Feels very minimal like an Apple store -seating options were generous Cons: -a bit pricey for a grab and go drink in my opinion but if you stay for a bit, it would be worth it

White R.

Yelp
We stopped in for an afternoon iced coffee today and loved it! Great friendly and communicative service. Now the coffee, it was so delicious! So smooth and perfectly sweetened. I got an iced sweet latte. Best coffee I've had in San Diego so far. Highly recommend this coffee shop!
google avatar

Erik L.

Yelp
Blue Bottle is my go-to spot and honestly, they never miss. The staff is always so nice--like genuinely kind, not that forced customer service nice. They're quick, efficient, and always remember to offer a treat for my dog, which pretty much seals the deal for me every time. I never leave without a Nola (if you know, you know), and if I'm feeling a little fun or just need that extra treat--I'll grab the waffle. No regrets. Ever. Plenty of seating both inside and out, so whether I'm catching up with a friend, taking a work break, or just sipping solo with my pup, it's always a vibe. Can't recommend this place enough. Consistently great coffee, great people, and the dog-friendly touch just puts it over the top
google avatar

Beatrice B.

Yelp
Consistently delicious. Outstanding quality and service. I don't get to this place often, but when I do, it's a must have treat. Until next time. And what's better than mixing work and pleasure?
google avatar

Theresa J.

Yelp
This morning, after my gym workout at Anytime Fitness, I decided to stop in Blue Bottle Coffee, which is in the same building next door. I ordered a decaf with oat milk. Apparently carefully crafted, I was VERY pleased from the first sip. It was so smooth, creamy, frothy, and delicious, it took me by surprise. I consider myself a coffee connoisseur, this is one of the finest I have ever had.
google avatar

Calvin H.

Yelp
Probably the best go to coffee shop within walking distance from the courthouse if you're ever on jury duty. Had the everything croissant and the Nola coffee and it was a nice pairing! Grabbed the matcha latte a few days later and it was just as great. Convenient spot with plenty of seating.

Raquel P.

Yelp
The coffee here is expensive and not well-prepared--my drip coffee was prepared without the almond milk. The worst part is there are no outlets so beware.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
Blue Bottle Coffee offers a rich, creamy and great tasting coffee. I also enjoyed the ham and cheese croissant for breakfast. The staff were friendly and helpful. My latte and croissant came out in less than ten minutes. Ambiance is clean, casual and relaxing ambiance. Great place to be in downtown San Diego. Highly recommended.

TJ G.

Yelp
This is my go to coffee spot. The staff is super friendly, the service is fast, and the drinks are delicious. Special shoutouts to Lulu, Angie, and Leslie for always making my experience special.
google avatar

Marjon F.

Yelp
The guy I've been dating has integrated Blue Bottle into his morning routine. So I've joined him a few mornings now to stop by Blue Bottle myself. I'm a very basic coffee drinker, so I usually order a hot or cold americano with a splash of almond or oat milk. I decided to be slightly adventurous and try their matcha latte with almond milk and a croissant. I wish they heated up the croissant, but it still tasted fresh and tasty. The matcha latte was pretty good, it was unsweetened, so I did have to add sugar. I'm a huge matcha lover, and I'd rate their matcha in my top five. I do love that they have lactose alternatives. Overall, great quality options.
google avatar

Ivan G.

Yelp
Coffee was okay! I ordered the lavender drink, but honestly, the lavender flavor wasn't really coming through. It mostly just tasted like coffee with milk. Nothing too special. I'd give it a 7/10. The coffee line was long, but I will say they made my drink surprisingly fast after I ordered.

Honest Reviewer ..

Yelp
I've never been to a more overhyped place. The inside is so uninviting and not comfy, not a place to come to work or study. Not really even great for sitting and conversing. My SO and I didn't really want to stay. The menu options are very limited. They can't even do a vanilla iced latte. The regular felt very small and the iced drink cup was like a disposable hotel hot coffee cup. It was all around weird. And $16 for two coffees. The flavor wasn't awful. But I would pass and go elsewhere.
google avatar

Salem W.

Yelp
Everything is incredibly overpriced for what it is and nothing is unique or special as they'd like to have you believe. Pastries are far and few between. Not as advertised or rated. Big skip!!!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I usually love getting the Nola cold brew but this time decided to try the Nola shakerato. It was good! Essentially just a shaken version of the drink but it adds a nice creaminess. Located in downtown San Diego there's only street parking but they do have a good amount of both indoor and outdoor seating. Service was friendly and fast.
google avatar

Lisa O.

Yelp
We were in town for SDCC and stayed at the Westgate Hotel which happens to be next to this Blue Bottle location!! SO glad to have been near this coffee shop because their coffee is SO worth it! We visited everyday we were in town and even got one for the road when we checked out. I got the NOLA Shakerato every time and it's so consistent! The coffee shop is decently sized with plenty of seating. There's restrooms in the back which need a code. All the baristas were nice, attentive and worked quickly. Overall, very happy with my visit!
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
The place is easy to find downtown on Broadway near the courthouse or Embarcadero. The ordering process is a little clunky and the time to receive coffee is long. The coffee drinks are handmade and delicious, but don't know if the wait time is normal. There are a few places to sit, but seems like a get and go place.
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
Great Downtown Blue Bottle location. Service was attentive and I got my Iced Spiced Nola very shortly after ordering. Oat milk was the default for the Spiced Nola. I enjoyed the warm cozy spices and the lightly sweetened taste of the Iced Spiced Nola. AC kept me cool from the 80+ degree weather outside. Although wifi was down, I was able to use the Mendocino wifi without any issues.
google avatar

Louisa M.

Yelp
Blue Bottle is my favorite coffee in the country, and I make a point to walk to this location whenever I'm in downtown San Diego. Normally I'd always rate Blue Bottle a solid 5 stars, but the employees at this location are even more snobby and uppity than other locations. It's to the point where they actually make you feel unwelcome, especially if you aren't one of their "regulars." But nothing will stop me from getting a yummy Blue Bottle espresso! This place is expensive, gourmet, snobby...but worth it! If you haven't had a Blue Bottle espresso, you're missing out. Creamy, strong, and always perfectly made by their baristas, I've never had a disappointing experience coffee-wise. I ordered a cappuccino with almond milk and an espresso, and both were amazing. I probably should dock them another star because when I visited, they served all of their "to stay" coffees is PAPER CUPS. I hate this, especially when I'm paying premium prices for espresso. Please: bring back the proper ceramic cups and spoons. It's insulting to serve such a yummy product in paper.
google avatar

Erika B.

Yelp
Single origin cold brew? What? really good flavor and knowledgeable staff. Will be back tomorrow.
google avatar

Ayham D.

Yelp
Get the iced NOLA shakerato. That's my favorite drink at Blue Bottle. It's great for a sweetened iced latte. For a less sweet option I really like the spiced NOLA latte. Be sure to charge your laptop before getting here if you're trying to get some work done. I couldn't find any outlets inside the shop.
google avatar

Amelea J.

Yelp
Is it crazy to say the coffee tasted clean? Like it was Ulta filtered and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The iced saffron vanilla latte sounded delish, but it had an after taste that I could get passed. My bestie had to trade me for his drink - which was the Nola and he loved the saffron so it worked out. Literally the same thing with no saffron. The service was great. The employees were nice and recommended these drinks to us and it was great.
google avatar

Isabella R.

Yelp
Came here the other day, the staff is haven't friendly. I had the Iced Nola, it wasn't as sweet as I thought I would be but I've been here a few times and compared to other coffee shops their coffees are generally less sweet. But the coffee is really good especially when you need a pick me up. It was a bit full when I was there. But I think that's common being that it's right in the middle of downtown.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
Have not tried their coffee but the oat milk matcha latte was very oat forward and not too sweet

Ava B.

Yelp
I love blue bottle and I think they have some of the best coffee but what makes this location in particular special is the staff. David is seriously the best and made our experience 10x better. This is definitely gonna be my new go to location.
google avatar

Regine A.

Yelp
Looking for strong coffee? Blue bottle has you covered. The menu is simple and easy to choose from. You can get your beverages hot or iced. Try the waffle if you need a quick bite. Thank me later: This small joint located in downtown San Diego is perfect to get work done while sipping on a cup of joe.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
This Blue Bottle location is such a gem. It's located below an office building on a corner next to Mendocino Farms. The ambience is quiet, clean, and the interior of the store was very warm and inviting. If I lived in downtown SD, I probably would work here. In terms of coffee quality, everything was great! The pours were consistent and the fact that I actually came here twice on my same trip to SD says a lot. Both times my cappuccino was amazing! The baristas who made them were different but both were so friendly and talented. The latte does not disappoint at all. If you happen to be peckish, I highly recommend the waffles. Those are my favorite. I did also try the cinnamon tear-apart bun and it was super tasty as well.
google avatar

Billy P.

Yelp
I ordered a mocha Hot coffee ended up being really strong, but customer service is excellent paid parking in downtown San Diego. The atmosphere was relaxing not too noisy. I would recommend this.
google avatar

Emma Z.

Yelp
I tried blue bottles Nola style coffee for the first time today! I don't usually leave reviews but I loved this place so much I had to! The iced Nola is perfect balance of creamy and sweet and not overly syrupy. Not to mention awesome customer service and great ambiance! Definitely recommend:)
google avatar

Tien H.

Yelp
- Hot Latte - Iced Cold Brew - Banana Bread This place deserves 5/5 and up to the hyped. Great coffee, good customer service, and most importantly the minimalistic interior decoration is on point. Highly recommend this place for the coffee and the ambiance.
google avatar

Stephen M.

Yelp
Very good espresso drinks, like most Blue Bottles, but very poorly staffed. If you want customers to start going somewhere else to save time, this is the way to do it. Staff is working hard, there just aren't enough of them.
google avatar

William R.

Yelp
My daughter and I really like the NOLA coffees. They are fresh made and have great flavor. Their pastries are pretty good and the staff were really helpful when they were out of bread and substituted a couple of English muffins for the avocado toast, and then wanted to comp the cost. This is top-notch service! I wish we had some Blue Bottle coffee shops near where we live, they would become my go to versus those other large coffee chains.
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
I almost over looked this blue bottle and I'm so grateful I didn't I love the Nola Shakerato here it's always one of my favorite drinks by blue bottle just the right amount of sweet. The Barista Katie was friendly and made it as great as I recalled from previous blue bottles I've been, I always use oat milk in mine
google avatar

Sreyoshi B.

Yelp
Stop by! Not a coffee drinker? Stop by!! Even if it is just to get their baked goods, early in the morning, to start your day right!
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
As always, drinks were spot on, perfectly balanced and great service. We have been here multiple times when visiting from Michigan and always make it a point to stop.
google avatar

Haley D.

Yelp
Such good matcha lattes!! It wasn't busy when I went so the service was quick. It's a good place to chill for a minute and work if you need to.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Stopped in for a coffee and a cinnamon tear apart. This was my second visit. The coffee is very good. I like the coffee is server in a mug if you are staying. I came back for the cinnamon tear-apart bun, which I love. The menu is straight forward, which is great for a coffee shop. A touch on the expensive side for my taste, but it did not stop me from coming back. The atmosphere is california industrial with a concrete floor, high ceiling, and neutral colors. 80-90s alternative music playing. The music volume wasfine for working, but maybe a touch loud if you wanted to have a conversation. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating is a bench style with tables common in coffee shops, some square and some round. The tables are good for working. The staff was friendly. It was busy around 7:30am on a weekday with waist line.
google avatar

Steve Y.

Yelp
Jukes was super cool today! Warm greeting. Great smile. Took good care of me and my son.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
Blue Bottle is popping everywhere. Here I am in San Diego with my hubby on our babymoon. Just a few more months until we meet our little nugget. As our morning routine, we gotta have our coffee and chat abt life before we can continue on with our day. This Blue Bottle, let's start by saying, it's located in downtown San Diego inside of a building but it's facing Broadway so you cannot miss it. There were two baristas working and both are pretty friendly but they do not seem like they are interested in starting a conversation with you. Haha. As for ambience, it's well lite and very clean. There are seven tables with a long couch seat. There are a few tables outside if you prefer sitting outside. I actually like their pour over station. There are five v60 set up to make their pour overs. If you're a coffee lover like me, it's always nice to come in and see how legit their coffees a
google avatar

Aiko S.

Yelp
Love this place and their coffee. The employees were great in making recommendations. Their coffee was so good I went back the next day and they remembered who I was. Would recommend trying their seasonal blends
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
This is some of the best coffee that I've ever had! We don't have a brick and mortar shop where I live but I took full advantage of one being so close during a business trip. I pretty much either visited the store directly or door dashed it to get this goodness every day. The latte with one sugar was amazing!! The barista told me that they really focus on keeping the purity and essence of the coffee bean. And you can tell! This shop was of modern design and quick and efficient with service. The food was good too. The standout for me was the liege waffle but I heard the avocado toast was also tasty.

Narayana Y.

Yelp
Great service! They ran out of waffle and gave me a croissant on the house. And the iced nola coffee is unbeatable
google avatar

Liiban O.

Yelp
Real quiet cafe downtown off of broadway. I was in the area and decided to just randomly step in, it's a non espresso coffee shop but it was still really good.

Bradley

Yelp
The best speciality coffee anywhere. it can sometimes be a wait because each drink is made with love, but it's always worth it. love the fresh clean ambiance inside too.
google avatar

Melanie T.

Yelp
I love the vibes of blue bottle coffee. There's a lot of natural lighting and it's very bright but modern for a coffee shop. The staff is friendly and nice. The place was clean and there's a lot of space where you don't feel cramped. There's also a lot of seating indoors and outdoors. But I personally love the blue bottle logo on the cups. It's adorable and fits my aesthetic. I ordered the matcha latte cold and it was delicious. After a confusing drive to the downtown area, this was the perfect pick me up. We were chilling here while waiting for our lunch spot to open up.
