The Navajo Nation Is Reclaiming Its Native Food Culture | Eater

"A half-acre garden oasis in the middle of the Arizona desert within the Navajo Nation, planted in 2016 in partnership with the local Teesto Chapter. The garden produces a wide variety of vegetables and flowers—including broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, amaranth, chilies, potatoes, corn, and garlic—and hosts gardening classes and tastings led by a master gardener and others to teach locals what will grow in the desert and how to use it in the kitchen. These hands-on programs were created in response to limited cooking skills and persistent food insecurity on the reservation, and staff have worked with Native chefs and educators to make sure surplus produce does not go to waste." - Andi Murphy

Google
Service the best weve experienced in a while, waitress was so attentive! As for the food, we had navajo tacos which were delicious! The price was also really reasonable! If we were staying in Kayenta more than 1 night we wouldve come back straight away!

Google
Really pleasant dinner stop. The Navajo tacos were good. The shredded beef enchiladas were amazing. And the Navajo cheeseburger (with a specialty in house Navajo bun) was thoroughly enjoyed! Our server was very pleasant and gave excellent service.

I really enjoyed it here! It’s wonderful that you’re preserving your culture, and it was heartwarming to see so many families coming in for lunch. The prices are very reasonable — steaks ranged from $20 to $30 and came with several side dishes and your choice of soup. The drinks were huge, and the service was absolutely top-notch. If we’re ever in the area again, we’ll definitely stop by. I highly recommend this place!

If you're looking to try local cuisine in Kayenta, this restaurant is a great option. The food is tasty and reasonably priced. The service is simple but friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy with a 'hogan house' style and Navajo decorations, making you feel like a local."

During our exploration of Monument Valley, we traveled through the Navajo Nation and decided to try some authentic Navajo cuisine. Since there weren't many options besides fast-food chains, we chose this restaurant for lunch to support local businesses, as recommended in a review. We ordered the Navajo tacos, which are the top-rated dish on the menu, along with one serving of Navajo diced mutton. The menu indicated that The tacos came with meat, lettuce, and tomatoes. We inquired about a chicken option, but the waitress informed us that they only had ground beef, so we went ahead with the standard meat option. When we received our orders, we noticed that the tacos did not have any meat. I called the waitress over to ask if the tacos were supposed to come with meat, and surprisingly, she said no. She then went to the counter and spoke in a native language about the meat situation, and they both went into the kitchen immediately. The waitress didn’t return for ten minutes. When she finally came back, she completely ignored us and started wandering around. To make sure we weren’t mistaken, I pulled up the restaurant’s menu and called her back over. She returned with another lady who had been at the counter , saying she was new and didn’t know it didn’t come with meat. I pointed out that the menu states it includes meat, and we had confirmed this with her at the time of ordering. The other lady interjected, saying they didn’t have meat in the kitchen, and then told us they would remove two tacos from our bill. I agreed, but when they brought the updated ticket, it still listed three tacos and the diced mutton. I went back to the waitress and reminded her that she said they would take off the tacos. She replied, “Oh, okay,” and then only removed one taco from the bill. I ended up paying the amount without further argument. I was disappointed by this experience, and I want to clarify that I am not writing this to harm the restaurant's reputation. It would have been helpful if they had addressed the issue instead of us having to call them repeatedly. I'm also curious about how many other tourists like us have felt misled, especially since I noticed many people ordering tacos.

Google
Nice little diner right of the highway. Did was great. Very disappointed that I just barely missed the last mutton burger of the night. Our waitress was very courteous and helpful. Highly recommend this place and if i ever come back through this way, I'll definitely stop for a 2nd go at it.

Excellent chilli beans with fried breads! They don't put sugar in their beans which is rare in America! And the mutton sandwich was delicious !

Google
I can only go as low as 1 star. Upon reviewing restaurants on Yelp, most were negative except for a nice Mexican Place (closed today). We decided on the Blue Coffee Pot. It’s been here for years. Stopped here back in the 90s on the motorcycle. Don’t remember much about it. I should have though. The parking lot was full. Good sign. Walking in a sign says ‘seat yourself’. Place is packed and we wait like vultures on the next table to vacate. Sit down and wait. Its owned and run by local Navajo. That’s good. Seems 80% locals are eating here. Another good sign. Finally one of only 2 waitresses covering maybe 20 tables drops off plastic menus and asks for our drink order. I ask for a Coke. Fine. About 5 minutes later she brings Joann her water but no Coke. “We’re out of Coke”. Okay a root beer. 10 minutes later she stops by and says “Oh right a root beer”. Even later she asks for our order. Now being tourists. And being in the Navajo Nation we thought we would again like to try the Navajo Taco. It’s their culture, their cuisine, they should want to present it as such. Not so fast. After a long wait we get our meals of Navajo Tacos. We did note that what seemed to be locals all eating other entries so that should have been a hint. I have never had such a plain utterly tasteless meal in my life. I ordered a beef taco. Well, there might have been some (?) ground beef sprinkled in there. Along with lettuce, the smallest diced tomatoes, in amount equal to the beef, chopped onion (that was a special note that the waitress asked if we wanted) and canned hole baked beans. Very bland tasteless baked beans. All on top of a so called Navajo fried bread which also was completely lacking in any flavor. Tasteless. I went to a vacated table to grab the Tabasco sauce which I then covered this mess with to provide some taste. We only ate the topping/filler of lettuce and such leaving the fry bread. Paid our bill to another waitress also covering as cashier. Oh, there was 1 bus guy working all the tables. I’m guessing either those 80% have no tastebuds or we just ordered like tourists and they treated us as such. Nice way to promote one’s culture. I did warn another couple of tourists who reversed course and left. Right down the street is a McDonalds which would have been high cuisine next to this place. It’s a new low.

Yelp
I had the Navajo Diced Mutton ( tasty Lamb) in tortilla roll and baked potato. It was delicious. I first visited Kayenta in 1984 . I remembered eating Navajo Lamb stew in a small restaurant in a trailer. I was told that that's where the restaurant first started. Interesting story! The restaurant was clean and the staff very friendly. This is a local gem hidden between the well known Fast Food places. You have to try it.

Yelp
Stopped in by recommendation from a Navajo reservation tribal member I met on the road. Looking for more traditional eats. Was not disappointed on this suggestion. I was definitely the only non-Navajo there which is a good thing. I wanted to see real and eat legit. I was greeted warmly and several Navajo men in cowboy gates nodded a pleasant hello as I walked by. It's simple, clean, super friendly, and basic fiercest. However I forgot gorge on a Navajo taco which was bomb! They also serve a few other traditional Navajo dishes. The potato salad was really good as well. It's a super cool slice of reservation life dining of a beautiful friendly people! After all they've been stepped on they're still beautiful to others. You gotta this place on the reservation in Kayenta AZ.

Yelp
First time here for weekday dinner, I was previously here for breakfast many years ago. Place was packed with locals and some tourists. Lots of menu choices including more Navajo & Mexican food. Hogan style ambience. Spotted a Ribeye Steak Dinner served with salad, baked potato, peas and carrots and dinner roll. All prices were very reasonable I have noticed a big difference in steaks cooked on an open fire and just grilled on a flattop. Think this was the latter. All pretty much your standard food fare. Steak was rare and a bit chewy. Overall a very good dining experience. Think I may go for of the traditional Navajo cuisine on next trip.

Yelp
Blue coffee pot is a delicious option! Theboutaide isn't much but inside is nice! Gives a diner vibes and good wood work and art. The service was outstanding. Friendly staff and very attentive. I ordered the chicken fried steak dinner. Baked potato, peas, dinner roll, and a salad. The chicken fried streak and brown gravy was a 9.6/10. Perfectly fried. Crispy yet extremely tender. No knife needed! Thebgravy was rich flavorful and perfect. The potato was also a 9.8/10. Perfectly cooked. I asked for a side of chili beans. I put butter cheese and the chili on the potato and didn't keave a scrap behind. The chili is absolutely delicious and homemade. Thinks of meat and a great chili flavor. The peas were basic and not seasoned 5/10. The roll was soft warm and delicious 8.2/10. Salad was a bit basic as well as the ranch. Would have loved some tomatoes or cucumber for some fresh pop. 7.9/10. All around highly recommended. I heard the breakfast menu is even better!

Yelp
Great breakfast burrito and my coffee was filled and hot the entire time I was seated. The toast was slightly stale really the only complaint everything else was great.

Yelp
Perfect lunch stop while we charged our non-Tesla EV on our way to Canyon de Chelly. Quick walk from the charging station. Excellent grilled chicken and swiss sammie on sourdough. Hubs enjoyed his tuna with a side of frybread. Very friendly service, good prices, cute place. Soooo much more satisfying than the nearby chain fastfood joints.

Kasia K.

Yelp
Stopped in on the way to Monument Valley. We all enjoyed our lunch here where most of the restaurant was full of locals. I had the Navajo Mutton which was excellent and two others had Navajo Cheeseburgers and my daughter had a chef salad which was huge. The boys loved the Navajo fry-bread. The eaters were huge and the coffee was excellent The place was packed but we got seated quickly and the food came out pretty quickly as well. I definitely recommend stopping in.

Yelp
While on vacation at Monument Valley I have been in search of Indian fry bread. The Blue Coffee Pot was my last chance for awesome Indian fry bread as we were on our way to Las Vegas. From the outside it appears The Blue Coffee Pot is in need of a fresh paint job. Inside it was nice. We visited during the lunch rush and service was slow. I ordered the steak and shrimp skewers with Indian fry bread. The fry bread was warm and with fresh fried aroma. Layers of light and soft fried dough melted in my mouth. Loved the light flavor. Best Indian fry bread I had on our Monument Valley trip. Now to the skewer. Fried shrimp had a nice snap and flavor. Steak I asked to be cooked medium and was more medium well to well done so parts were tender and some were a bit dry. I enjoyed the flavor of the marinated beef. Loved the flavor of the carrots and yellow squash. Very good tasting dish. Chicken noodle soup was mostly noodles. I didn't care for the noodles which had a starchy flavor and were close to disintegrating. Broth was very mild with just a salty flavor. I would not order this dish again. I wanna visit again for the delicious Indian fry bread.

Yelp
holy crap this place is good. filled with locals, great service, decent prices and amazing food. go for the fry bread and mutton, you can't go wrong. love it love it love it

Tim O.

Yelp
Shitty service. Can't even be bothered to have a conversation. We left the restaurant without ordering

Johnetta C.

Yelp
My husband and I had the Roast Beef dinner with mashed potatoes and salad. It was good and competitive price. Service was good. It was in a cute building. We were able to get served right away.

Yelp
After a rather disappointing dinner at The View where the old Navajo menu has been replaced by what appears to be Denny's, we were referred down to the Blue Coffee Pot for the best local Navajo cuisine in the area and we were not disappointed! While mutton stew only appears on the menu once per week, the delicious soup and diced mutton with fry bread made up for missing out on the stew. Every dish was a winner, although with a few items sold out when we arrived, we had to improvise a little with our own "secret menu" by doing our Navajo taco with refried beans (delicious!) and made our own dessert out of fry bread with honey, powdered sugar and vanilla ice cream. Not so "Navajo" but equally delicious was the fried liver steak with onions and gravy. Service was really amazing considering our one server was handling the entire restaurant for most of our visit.

Yelp
There are only a couple of dining options in town (other than fast food) and this is one. I came for dinner while staying in town. Only locals inside eating, so that means it should be good. Had the Navajo taco. Overall it was pretty good. When I visited, it was seat yourself. About 1/3 full. The food came very fast. Well priced, so I can recommend a visit.

Di D.

Yelp
We wanted to support local business but it was such disappointing experience. We ordered steak and shrimp kabob to-go, which had to include soup and was promised to be ready in 15 minutes. Instead it took 35 minutes and a missing soup. The atmosphere was a bit chaotic with a line of people waiting to pick up their orders. If you still want to place an order there, check twice that it includes correct meals and all the food.

Betty V.

Yelp
We stopped for breakfast, great food, not grease, clean food! eggs cooked just as I ask every was very good. service was great for a busy breakfast

Michelle H.

Yelp
A nice atmosphere and the food is delicious. The only complaint is the service was slow but the employees were very polite. I would go back.

Bruce T.

Yelp
Excellent food, friendly, attentive service, reasonable prices, spotlessly clean. What's not to like? We would eat here regularly if we lived in the area.

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Excellent service what a wonderful road side gem outside Monument Valley and 4 Corners. Love to support local businesses. Quaint ambiance . Clean and the locals eat here as well. Navajo TacoThe Navajo Taco was amazing! As large as a 12 inch plate on fluffy fresh fried bread with chili and beans with fresh tomatoes lettuce and Onions. Generous service and wonderful price. Great road food find!

Diana K.

Yelp
Horrible institution food. I had the hamburger steak with horrible gravy. Iceberg lettuce salad with no veggies on it. Yuck.

Yelp
So we came to visit family and they said let's go eat, the recommendation was the blue coffee pot. Local place. Staff was not overly friendly and we did wait a bit for service, but I expect that out here on the reservation. Place was not overly clean but it was decent. Restroom was kept up with is a great plus. French dip was okay. It needed to be shaved thinner as it was just a roast with joe real taste. Side of fries were okay. Salad is great, you get all the dressing you want and it was kept fresh. Navajo burger was okay. Needed something that I just don't know of. Again, if you are here in town check it out. Can't say it is one of the best places but it is good

Yelp
I added this restaurant to my fav so the next time I'm here I'll return to the Blue Coffee Por restaurant!! Loved the French Toast Delight! And of course the coffee was great! The service was excellent, greedily and courteous. The rest of my company agreed on all points!!
google avatar

Yelp
Very informal place, full of locals. Very good food and good price. We had a super breakfast with 20 dollars, which is rare nowadays!

Yelp
Great food, great service. Stopped there twice for breakfast while visiting beautiful Monument Valley. Highly recommend!

Paul S.

Yelp
Best meals we've had in ages for such reasonable prices. 12 oz T-bone dinner for $17. Hot roast beef sand w/ mashed potatoes and gravy $ 9.70. So much beef, I couldn't eat the potatoes and 1/2 the bread. Delicious! And great service too!.

Steph Z.

Yelp
While staying at the monument valley inn across the street, we decided to try here for breakfast. The pancakes were HUGE. I only finished half of one, and it came with 2. The prices were reasonable, especially given the area where food seems to cost more. I added bacon and hashbrowns as a side. They didn't have milk but had juices. Everything was good- it wasn't amazing, but it was filling and hit the spot for breakfast. Service was prompt.
google avatar

Ray S.

Yelp
Love this restaurant. Every time I come this area, try not to miss T bone and Ribeye steaks and Navajo Taco are great.
google avatar

Rohit A.

Yelp
We stopped here on the way back home for breakfast and it was great. Service was very good, omelette and coffee was very good. Unique shape of the restaurant, I would come back.
google avatar

Rose O.

Yelp
We got really good food from this place. I was just sad. We couldn't order the next day because it was closed on Saturday and Sunday. My dad said the pork chops were particularly good.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
Interesting place. Tried the Navajo tacos and burgers, hard to eat but not bad. People were friendly and food came fast.
google avatar

Thomas K.

Yelp
Breakfast of champions! (Black coffee, buttered sourdough toast, two eggs, and a chicken-fried steak.) Prompt and pleasant service makes this traditional eight-sided restaurant a favorite with the locals and any tourist lucky enough to stop there.

Mark W.

Yelp
The French dip was the best one I have ever had! 10:10 recommend Service was excellent
google avatar

Irvinette M.

Yelp
Loved our Navajo chili and fry bread and Navajo taco. The drinks were in extra large glasses. Service was fast even with the place being busy. Would definitely go back. Great place!
google avatar

Anurag S.

Yelp
THE place to have breakfast if you are passing by Kayenta to see the monument valley. Very unassuming place but the food was brilliant. Eggs were cooked perfectly, toast was crispy brown with a layer of butter. Omelet had super crunchy veggies in it. Coffee was outstanding. Its a real gem. Don' miss it.
google avatar

Natty D.

Yelp
Don't eat here! Unless of course you want to be approached by bad mannered waitresses and staff. Not only that, the place reeked of grease smoke and the table set up is strangely arranged. I should have walked right back out, I regret not doing so. I had hopped for good food and good service. So sad. The rude staff and smell lowered my ambition to eat the food I ordered. Instead I took it to go and fed the food to my dog. It's definitely a low-vibration joint. Don't expect anything more. I will never ever stop here to eat again!
google avatar

Xochitl G.

Yelp
We stopped here for what we thought would be a reasonably timed lunch. Instead, it took over 45 minutes for our food to arrive. We weren't the only ones waiting for food. Everyone else in the restaurant was in the same situation. You could see the pained look on the other travelers as they waited and waited for their food. Our waitress never spoke to us in those 45 minutes. We each got the mutton served inside a Fry bread, which was very good. The fries were bordering on inedible. The waitress forgot to bring out our diced green Anaheim chili. By the time we paid our bill, we had been there for an hour and 15 minutes. We won't be stopping here again.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Good food, good service, great price. The chicken-fried steak is very good. As we say back home-"stick to your ribs" food. And that's a compliment

Danny S.

Yelp
What a nice surprise! Stopped overnight in Kayenta AZ on our way to Monument Valley. Food choices are very sparse. The hotel we're staying has a restaurant, but fairly expensive. Most of the other places are all fast food. Luckily, we saw the Blue Coffee Pot restaurant. It's run by local Native Americans who we found very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant itself is shaped like a traditional hogan. It gives it an open and airy feel. We found a great variety on the menu. I had a wonderful chicken fried steak. My wife, a steak and rice dish. Portions were large and really tasty. Prices were really reasonable. A large coke and ice tea were only $1 each!! That comes with one free refill. Exceptional value, great selection, excellent flavors and a warm and friendly atmosphere! Oh! Did I mention they have amazing and authentic Indian fry bread? Yum!

Cheryl M.

Yelp
Great local Native American restaurant with local favorites, sandwiches, plate meals and fry bread! We had theNavajo taco and beans with chili & fry bread. Delicious! The place was busy but service was good taking crowd into account since we stopped around noon.

Rebecca K.

Yelp
What a lovely local spot! The coffee is AMAZING. Absolutely amazing. The service was wonderful, truly a gem. We shared the breakfast burrito and it was delicious. They have homemade tortillas so definitely opt for the tortilla substitutes! Or order an extra side of it like we did. Definitely worth the stop!

joe n.

Yelp
A very good diner. Prices are reasonable, prompt and friendly service and a varied menu. The portions are generous so if you're hungry this is a good choice. There's not much choice in Kayenta and this is better than any junk chain food.
google avatar

Kristie S.

Yelp
Delicious, but had to take to go due to COVID. Hard to eat a Navajo taco in your car because it's messy. Fry bread is amazing. My husband had the fry bread burger and really enjoyed it. My other daughter had fry bread and chili.
google avatar

Willem B.

Yelp
Nicely located at the gateway to Monument Valley. Nice variety on the menu. I had the burger with Navajo fry bread. It was very tasty and it was a huge portion!

Kaylen T.

Yelp
A Hidden Gem In A Small Town On The Navajo Reservation. I Always Recommend This Place To Everyone/Anyone Who Asks!

Frank C.

Yelp
Positive - the people are friendly, the place is clean and affordable. Negative - the food is very bland. We had the Fried Chicken, Pork Chops and the French Dip Sandwich and Chili Cheese Fries. All needed major seasoning. Salt and Pepper helped a bit, but the food had no taste. The chicken was dry but the skin was crispy.

John L.

Yelp
Great local spot recommended to me by the Navajo Guide who took me and my family around Monument Valley. There aren't many options around Kayenta, but this place is great. My recommendation? Skip the standard fast food spots and got get a great meal at the Blue Coffee Pot.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
We were so glad we stopped here for lunch. Good food, affordably priced, and served fast by a friendly, efficient crew. Clearly a locals' favorite, too, which says a ton. Most people were enjoying Wednesday's meatloaf special, complete with mashed potatoes, a dinner roll, and a dinner salad. Several others were eating the ribs. I had the BLT on sourdough, adorably priced at only $4.50, as well as a giant, refreshing cup of iced tea. My husband had the patty melt and my stepson had the chili dog, which came topped with real homemade chili. The place overall has a real charm to it. Though that charm is clearly well-worn and a touch threadbare, it's charm nevertheless. The place is well-loved, an anchor in the community. Who needs more than that? Shiny and new doesn't always equal quality. While at the Blue Coffee Pot, we were proud to be three of a total of maybe six white faces among a sea of local Navajo. We're the dumb white people smart enough to skip the McDonald's stop in favor of trying the locals' true favorite. Places like the Blue Coffee Pot make our habit one worth keeping.
google avatar

Evan R.

Yelp
On our recent vacation that took us through much of northern Arizona, this was the best restaurant that we experienced in the Navajo Nation. My wife and I both had breakfast burritos and both of us rated them as quite good. Fresh ingredients, fresh tortillas and good coffee to go with them. The service was the best we experienced on the reservation, as was the atmosphere. The Blue Coffee Pot has a traditional Navajo Hogan design, making it one of the more unique dining spots you'll experience. A first-rate choice for breakfast.
google avatar

Sim S.

Yelp
Covid precautions on point. Tried the Navajo Taco, and it was simply delicious. Usually its oily in other places, but this was perfect. Thanks for the amazing food.
google avatar

Sharah M.

Yelp
Super cute family small town diner. I would come here again in a heartbeat just to support local business. Also, my pork chop was juicy and tasty!
