"This bright blue building on Canal Street sells out more days than not, thanks in no small part to its signature maple bacon long john doughnut. All doughnuts are still made by hand at Blue Dot Donuts, a point of pride for this busy shop. Get there early, and on the weekends, expect a line." - Eater Staff

Google
This place is dope. Easy and casual. Friendly staff. Fun selection. Reasonable price. Good coffee. The donuts are light and airy. The huge Apple fritter was like a fried apple cloud. It also happens to be one of the only things open early am in this immediate area. Definitely go here, especially if an early riser in search of caffeine & sweets.

Google
The donuts are amazing. I always get the maple bacon and another donut. They have a great variety. You have to get there early cause they sell out fast. The price is very reasonable

What can I say. The donuts are fantastic and the people are even better. It was my first time in nola and they made me feel at home. Must try donuts.

Google
A perfect early morning snack to start your morning, Blue Dot opens early with fresh and plentiful donuts. There's a good size of selection to pick from, so here's a pic of what we got going on! @phidingthefam

Google
We'd never been there before and saw reviews online, it was everything the reviews said! We just asked for 2 dozen of "the best" and we got some DELISH donuts for under $20! Great breakfast for a great price! And they were SO FAST!

Tim R

Google
Excellent donuts. Favorite is glazed (not pictured). One of best values around is the apple fritter was about as big as my face!

sydnee watt

Google
Tried the apple fritter and it was very soft and not overly sweet. Small little location and the staff was very nice.

Google
I learned of Blue Dot Donuts via a previous boss who would bombard us with donuts from here on the weekends. He would get one of each kind (for the most part). I am not a big sweets fan, but the donuts are here are freshly baked and run out pretty fast because of that. Which is a great thing as it confirms their quality. Blue Dot Donuts are low-cost with a kind staff. Phone orders are accepted as well to hold your donuts. I do recommend Blue Dot Donuts.

Yelp
Business is Closed!!!! Happy to say Hurts on has better doughnuts... Hurts Chocolate cake donuts are amazing..

Yelp
I'm staying very close to this shop, so I figured I'd get some donuts, even though I've been on a diet. It was irresistible. Well, the donuts are so light and airy, I didn't even feel guilty about eating them. Not only that, they ARE the most delicious donuts I've ever had, and go so perfectly with a hot cup of coffee. Staff is very friendly, and shop is impeccably clean and orderly. I will be back!

Robin L.

Yelp
A good old favorite! I have always loved this little donut shop. Usually these fan favorites sell out early and daily. I was lucky to grab two and I had to pull over and enjoy The donuts are so light and fluffy in the inside and the sweet glaze and salty flavors are amazing!

Leilani Ann C.

Yelp
Get the Lumberjacks they have maple syrup, bacon, eggs, etc on a big arm size cake that's a glazed donut. They also have blue raspberry syrup for dessert too and chocolate cake Cadbury cookies donuts.

Tori M.

Yelp
Holy crap these are some of the best donuts in the whole world. The inside is just a counter with all of their delicious donuts displayed. Pretty average. But if you try their old fashioned buttermilk donut - omg - I can hardly breathe just thinking about it. ITS THAT GOOD!!!! There are some tables outside where you can sit and enjoy your coffee and donut if you don't have to rush off to work. Not gonna lie, the parking situation really sucks. There are a lot of driveways that you have to avoid Parking in front of. But I promise, the donuts are worth it. They are so so so worth it.

Yelp
I was craving some doughnuts on Saturday morning and saw someone post about this place on Social media. I arrived at about 10:30am. They are open from 6am-1pm on Saturday's. There is off- street parking but I do think parking would be an issue during busy times. There are about 3 tables outside the place that you can sit down and enjoy the doughnuts. I popped in and it is quite small on The inside. Just an entrance and a glass display with what I saw was 8 doughnuts left. 4 chocolate and 4 maple. I asked the guy " is this it?" . He then told me that they had a big order in the am for the children's hospital and there was a long queue in the am. So basically I came too late at 10:30am. However- I took 4 doughnuts (2 chocolate and 2 maple) and tasted both and while I found them very sweet, the actual doughnut itself was divine. I think a plain doughnut would be amazing. The dough itself is so light and airy. Also tasted so fresh! The guy did tell me that I can call ahead and ask them to keep some aside for me. That way I won't miss out. He was super friendly and nice. I will definitely be back to try some more doughnuts and update my review. Also apologize for lack of pics - I was scoffing doughnuts and forgot!

Andrew T.

Yelp
Solid neighborhood donut shop with traditional flavours and good quality. It was a block from where I was staying in town when visiting so it was on my radar when scoping out the area even before I'd arrived. At the time of my visit, their donuts were only 90 cents each. I can't remember the last time I paid less than a dollar for anything! My favourite donuts are from Dynamo in San Francisco, but those are more likely to run $3. If you are on the lookout for a great value, bump the rating to five stars.

Andy K.

Yelp
Tried a bunch of places and these are some of the best doughnuts in the city. Wedding cake & blueberry cake are my favorites.

Fannie S.

Yelp
Best donuts ever. Been a few months and still dream of eating 3 of these. Next time I'm hitting this place when I get into town and when I'm leaving. Their donut dough is perfect! I love a good donut and will only eat it if the dough is good. (Sorry, not sorry but I hate KK donuts.) Their PBJ donut was fun but the lemon filled one was an excellent surprise. Hope y'all get to check it out sometime. They sell 'em until they're sold out. Maybe give them a ring??! Prices = reasonable. Service = Friendly.

John B.

Yelp
The first time I walked by around noon and they had sold out for the day, a possibility I would bear in mind regardless of the posted hours, which do start very early but may end early as well. When I came back, I found their small storefront bustling with activity and full of donuts. The donuts here aren't super fancy and esoteric concoctions like District (nor are they as expensive), but they do have a distinction between the basic glazed ones and the more substantial flavors. I tried a Nutella-covered donut filled with banana creme. It certainly delivered on the flavor that was advertised. Of course the nutritional value of anything here is probably less than zero, but one comes to New Orleans to indulge. This is a police-themed establishment, trading in a stereotype but also being meaningfully connected to NOPD, having been founded by ex-officers and bearing various related memorabilia and notices inside. Of course the force here are not a popular bunch locally or nationally, but it's a tough job they do and it's good that this shop exists as some sort of connection to the community.

Yelp
So I've always wanted to try blue dots and this past Sunday I finally got the chance to! My toddler needed to have donuts and this was the closest spot! Upon walking up it looked like they had a SOLD Out sign! It was about 10:45 I would say. I walked in and they had about 3 donuts left! It was 2 glaze and 1 chocolate icing! We were so excited! I loved the chelate frosted! They were super fresh and the chocolate was divine! My son loved the glaze. We def have to come back earlier to try! They were so good I couldn't take pics!

Brenna D.

Yelp
The negative reviews are so dumb, I HAVE to make a review on how amazing these donuts are and how friendly the staff is. Y'all are killin it! Keep slingin dem donuts! See y'all in the mornin to buy a doz for my coworkers! AND!!!! This business is in the chillest part of New Orleans... Midcity!

Lorissa G.

Yelp
Prices of the donuts were amazing. Texture and quality was great. Service was top tier. Definitely will be coming back for more donuts! I did get there at 6:30am so their selection was huge which I'd recommend for others wanting an array of donuts.

Amy K.

Yelp
Great donut spot! Friendly service running as a single person operation due to COVID. OFFERS CALL AHEAD(if you order the night before to ease up the stress on the operator). Large and delicious donuts. Owner will make special orders for off-menu if you call day before. We will be back!!

T R.

Yelp
Not just another hipster donut shop! This unassuming little neighborhood store has character without trying too hard and they make amazing donuts at super reasonable prices!

Damian S.

Yelp
Great donuts, great flavors, & great seasonal specialties, but best of all was the authentic southern hospitality. These guys were welcoming, informative & kind. If i were in local government or on the New Orleans tourism council, I'd beg these guys to be ambassadors for the city: locals; enthusiastic about their city; generous; funny; knowledgeable; & hospitable. We had donuts & coffee for breakfast before exploring City Park. All five of us found donuts we LOVED, we discovered flavors we'd never tried before (almond wedding cake, king cake, a variety of fillings, & a delicious blueberry), and our interactions with the manager/owner & his brother were amazing. Get there early to get your pick of their creative & tasty donut options.

Kali M.

Yelp
Their wedding cake donut is SO good, and nice and light on the almond flavor so that it's not overpoweringly sweet. Note that they have a $5 minimum for debit/credit card purchases, so either bring cash or come prepared to buy more donuts than you intended to (this is what I did, and I shared them with everyone I encountered on my walk back home - win win!) Love this neighborhood gem!

David T.

Yelp
Awesome donuts! Friendly owner took the time to tell us about the flavors and let us know to get there early to make sure we get the best selection. I personally liked the original glazed the best. The apple fritter and bacon maple were also outstanding.

Tammy L.

Yelp
I'm not the biggest donut eater in the world, possibly because I don't usually do much sweets (thankfully), and I enjoy original glazed donuts almost exclusively, but I have found myself making a stop at Blue Dot more often than I should. What hooked me? Their maple bacon long johns and blueberry donuts. I'm not sure why I enjoy the maple bacon, since it is on the sweeter side. Let's not forget the bacon fat sitting in the glaze that oozes with every bite, but nevertheless, this is one of the items that I always get when i'm at Blue Dot. The blueberry donut (not the blueberry glaze) is another of my favorites because... blueberries are delicious! And I do prefer the non-glazed donuts more since they're usually less sweet. Another item they have during Mardi Gras season is the King Cake donut, which is possibly my favorite king cake out there - just cause it's a king cake AND a donut! The texture is less dense than a king cake itself and just like a donut, with sugar sprinkles on top! Mmm... The location of this Blue Dot is away from most other businesses and restaurants - but this does make the parking a bit easier. There is as five dollar minimum for credit card charges, which can sometimes be inconvenient, but hey, more donuts for everyone! There is some seating indoors and out, and though it's not particularly trendy, there are usually people sitting around enjoying a cuppa with their scrumptilicious tdonuts.

Jen B.

Yelp
We just got back from a trip to Blue Dot Donuts on Canal St. It just opened a few days ago and I found out about it from a friend's entry on "another social networking site". I kid you NOT. When we pulled up there were, not one, but TWO cops cars outside...the word is OUT!! So you know it has to be good...LOL!! It is cute, clean with fun donut art on the walls, there is a little seating area just outside if you want to sit under the oaks and watch the traffic and occasional streetcar pass by. The have donuts, ice cream and coffee. We tried a glazed donut and also a strawberry frosted cake donut. Both were delicious, the glazed was light and fluffy and sweet. We also got an apple fritter to go, that will be breakfast tomorrow, so I will have to report back. Overall, a great new addition to Mid-City. They open at 6am, bless their hearts, and their sign says they stay open "until"...not sure what that means, but I am sure they will get a solid time down at some point. check 'em out!

Yelp
The Blue Dot has some really unique and creative donuts like a Maple Bacon Donut, Ice Cream Sandwich Donut, Key Lime Crumble Donut, Apple Crisp Donut, Snickers Donut, and Peanut Butter and Jelly Donuts. I had a Dulce de Leche donut (yummy) and a Snickers donut (yea didn't taste like a snickers). The selection, to me, isn't that vast. Maybe two dozen types of donuts total whereas some donut shops have twice the selection. I think their donuts are either hit or miss. Inexpensive donuts for sure but sometimes keeping things simple is better than trying to be too creative. I do love businesses with local owners so definitely a plus in my eyes and the main reason I would choose them over Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts, or Tastee Donuts.

Shea G.

Yelp
We woke up and decided we wanted donuts, this was the first place that came up on Yelp close to us. We went on a Sunday morning about 8:00am, parking was not a problem at all. There was a line because they were only serving at the door through plexiglass. But it moved fast. The gentleman was very nice and had everything we asked for. It was reasonable as well. A dozen for $9.80. We got a mixture , glazed, chocolate, strawberry, blueberry iced and blueberry cake. They were wonderful. If you get a chance check them out!

Christopher W.

Yelp
Meh, my love for Blue Dot is over. The donuts here are just too sweet for my palate anymore and so is the price. I ordered the bacon log and almost paid $5 for one donut. I know that's a specialty but really? Like most things even the donuts have gotten expensive in this town and in Orleans proper there really isn't a great real donut place to be found.

Mike C.

Yelp
Forget about those plain old, boring beignets: come here for the best fried goodness in New Orleans. I like my sweets riddled with more sweets, so I will take a Maple Bacon Donut or a Peanut Butter & Jelly-filled Donut over a plain piece of fried dough with powdered sugar on top any day of the week. Not only does this place have the huge variety of different kinds of unique and interesting flavors that I like to see, but the donuts all happen to taste amazing too. They have everything from your classic glazed, and chocolate with sprinkles, to the amazing ones I mentioned above, along with Red Velvet, Snickers (which I was devastated that they didn't have the day I went), and a host of others. You definitely have to get the Maple Bacon Longjohn though (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/blue-dot-donuts-new-orleans?select=gNUeiMs6EoRKlXv7RTYyxQ). This huge, long donut is as awesome as it sounds, and seems to be one of their top sellers, as they sold out of a tray right before me which almost gave me a panic attack, but then brought out another huge, fresh tray. As a peanut butter addict, the Peanut Butter & Jelly was as good as I hoped it would be. It is coated in just straight up peanut butter on top, with a generous filling of jelly inside. Lastly, the much more subtle Glazed Blueberry was just as tasty as the others, and surprisingly delicious for such a simple flavor. The coffee is really good too and the staff is super friendly. I guess you have to go to Cafe Du Monde at least once, but once you get that out of your system, come to Blue Dot for a far more pleasant and satisfying experience.

Yelp
Items Selected: Holes - Plain, Powdered, Cinnamon-Sugar, Apple Fritter Chocolate Dough Peanut Butter and Jelly S'mores Sour Cream Old Fashioned Blueberry Cake Red Velvet A small shop serving locals on Canal Street, the sort of place where visiting for more than ten morning minutes will assuredly see four or more patrons enter and be greeted by name, Blue Dot Donuts is one of those classic mom n' pop places that has evolved over time without abandoning the principles from which it originated, everything still made on-site with novelties served alongside the classics. Proudly noting their Donuts to be hand-mixed and cut, but not charging the high tariff of a place like District Donuts +Sliders + Brew, those entering Blue Dot are likely to be tempted by nearly two-dozen daily options including Cake, Raised, Filled and Fritters, the latter surprisingly offered as "Donut Holes" and thus capitalizing on the items two best aspects by maximizing the crunchy surface area without allowing the fruity inside to become saturated with oil. Using holes to try a few other yeasted choices, all par for the course while a larger Cocoa-infused ring unfortunately came across dry beneath the thin layer of glaze, S'mores proved to be a messy little treat with sticky Fluff and Chocolate shell applied haphazardly along with a dusting of Graham Cracker crumble, the PB&J pocket good enough, though the "jam" was essentially fruitless Pie-filling and thus cloyingly sweet. Happy to report that both the Blueberry Cake and Old Fashioned met high standards despite likely being made from a mix, Red Velvet actually turned out to be the undeniable best ring offered on the morning before Halloween, the dense Chocolate base rich and moist beneath a frilly piping of lightly sweetened Cream Cheese.

Andrew D.

Yelp
The best donuts in the parish. Hands down. I'm a teacher and parents send donuts from different places a lot. But when I buy go straight to Blue Dot.

Tara F.

Yelp
I stopped in here recently, solely based off of Yelp reviews and pictures. I came in around 10 am and already the majority of the donuts were gone...so if you want a selection, go early! My cake donut was delicious... however, the plain glaze were just ok. Customer service was ok too...I just was kinda surprised that the place really didn't look the same as all of the pics. If I go back, it would definitely have to be not long after the open to see if there's a difference...

John T.

Yelp
Cake donuts rule. Yeast donuts drool. Both will give you arteriosclerosis but you only live..... Ach, chest pains, gasp, death rattle......

Jaime F.

Yelp
Fresh, warm donuts are one of the best products of the known world. Donut holes were excellent too (and cheap!). The highlights since I've been here is the bavarian creme glazed donut and anything with raspberry glaze on top. And now for the important information...cash only!! Parking is free and there is plenty of it nearby. The line can get pretty long. In the early mornings, there are families or youth soccer groups that go here. However, it is always worth the wait and the line moves quickly. If you have had a long week, this is the best place to indulge and carb-load.

Jimmy T.

Yelp
WOW! King cake donuts?! What more could I want here in New Orleans! Seeing the tiny plastic baby laying on the side of the bright green, purple, and white sugar coated donut! Honestly, staring into the case was a magical experience, seeing the numerous donuts laid out, the options were endless! I came with two of my other friends to this place, so as soon as we went in, all of us could smell the amazing decadent donuts through the case! Anywho, let's go on to what I chose: Red Velvet Cake Donut (3.9/5.0) The donut itself was delicious, the creamy frosting on top tasted like cream cheese, and the red velvet cake crumble on the frosting gave it much more texture. My only complaint would have to be the lack of moisture. Whenever I bit into the donut, certain sides of it were somewhat dry and hard. I'm sure if the donut was much more moist, the experience would've been heavenly overall. The appearance of the donut which resembled a red velvet cake in itself was gorgeous, which made it a must have on my first visit. Banana with Peanut Butter (The Elvis, is what I would call it. 4.5/5): Now whenever I went on campus and started giving out donuts to random friends, everyone seemed off putted by the idea of a donut with banana and peanut butter. It was actually kind of odd, what could make people veer away from it as much as they do? Is the idea really that unappealing? Well, needless to say when I went home, I carried the one donut with me that no one wanted. Similar to life, looks are deceiving. After I had my dinner, I decided to share the donut with my dad. As I stared down at the donut, I thought to myself: "Why is it that no one wants you?" So, I took a bite, and to my surprise, the donut was amazing. Even better then the red velvet! The peanut butter gave the donut a creamy texture, while the filling was banana cream. You may have noticed in my other photo that I had another donut, the one with the white swirls and a red gummy bear (strawberry) in the center. That one was actually the strawberry cream cheese who I gave to one of my friends. She had no complaints besides the fact that the donut was lacking in a good amount of filling. After three of four bites she finally got to the jelly filled center. Overall, a great experience, and definitely a nice place to go when you have the time.

Christina C.

Yelp
Okay so I have been dying to get to this place. I pass it everyday on my way to school, and this time I had to stop. As I walk up to the door the sweet smells hit me one by one. Now I am suppose to be sampling 3 different donuts for me my mother, and sister. I send them the pictures of the donuts only to inform them that I ate all three. blueberry, glaze, and buttermilk. They are so upset with me. I guess I can't come alone next time lol.

Peter N.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place so bad after hearing so many good things about the Bacon Maple Long John, after only finding out that they had ran out when we got there at 9:30.. Seriously? I did not think it was that late to get a donut.. So we settled for the following: - Glazed - I thought this was mediocre, a bit doughy, not too sweet, but nothing special - Blueberry Donut - this was also mediocre, nothing special - Wedding Cake Donut - this was delicious and very tasty - Butter drop Cake Donut - thought this was also mediocre - Key Lime Pie Filled - perfect amount of filling and lime flavoring, this was delicious I am never really in the area, but if I ever am around here early in the morning, I still want to try the Bacon Maple Long John!

John V.

Yelp
It's close to where I live and is really good ... I highly encourage trying their amazing cinnamon rolls!!

R M.

Yelp
Good, light, not overly fried donut. Bought the glazed and chocolate iced. The dough does not have a yeasty like taste, like some of the big chain places. It's a good spot to satisfy your donut craving.

Ashley B.

Yelp
My coworker brought in donuts from Blue dot! They are absolutely amazing! I had a piece of the buttermilk, it was My absolute favorite!

Ronnie R.

Yelp
It might be sacrilegious for a native to say this, but I'm not a beignet person. They definitely have their place, but most of the time, I want one of those soft yeasty donuts that just melt in your mouth. There are not many foods that I actually crave, but when it comes to donuts, its like I'm in my 3rd trimester and my unborn child has a serious sweet tooth. When we first moved to Mid-City, I immediately realized we were lacking a good donut shop. Not just Mid-City, but New Orleans in general. It's a shame that the handful of truly great donut shops that I have visited are outside the city limits. Blue Dot finally managed filled that void in the spring of this year. Three cops open a donut shop... it sounds like the opening lines to a good joke. These donuts are no joke, though. Yes, it was three NOPD officers that got together and opened up a refuge for the donut cravers in the heart of the city. They opened it up in what was a huge void in the donut map. There was Tastee in Lakeview, another one on Esplanade, Feret St. Poboy & Donuts in Uptown, but nothing in Mid-City. Blue Dot is now easily the best of this bunch. Their selection is pretty impressive. Some people might expect that to mean a massive wall of donuts with 100+ different varieties, but the reality is that they always have 20-30 types of fresh, quality donuts. What sets them apart, though, is their more unique "off the wall" donuts that you would not find anywhere else: pineapple glazed, key-lime pie, orange glazed, red velvet and Samoa just to name a few. Their trademark donut is the maple bacon long john. It's a love it or hate it kind of item. Personally, I could do without it as I'm not really a bacon person. Some people swear by it though. It's all in the details. At most other places, the blueberry glazed might be a normal yeast donut with blueberry flavored goop on top. At Blue Dot the blueberry frosting is made in house and has little bits of fresh blueberries mixed in. My favorite is the PB&J donut which consists of a strawberry filled lightly iced with peanut butter, sprinkled with little bits of peanuts and a slice of fresh strawberry on top. Something else they offer is a donut, ice cream sandwich with different type of toppings. So, why not five stars? 1.) They tend to sell out of that impressive selection relatively early, especially on the weekends. If you have your heart set on a certain specialty donut, you had better be in line before 9am. 2.) It's hard to get "hot" glazed. I ask for them every time I go in there, but I've only been able to get them maybe twice.

Jen L.

Yelp
Yum! Cake donuts for days. I love cake style donuts and they are hard to find. Blue Dot has a multitude of flavors...an embarrassment of riches even. Some were perfect, a couple were a bit too sweet, but I'm sure that's personal taste. Staff was friendly & efficient. Thank goodness I don't live too close.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I LOVE these dang donuts. I have introduced multiple people to these guys. My favorite are the wedding cake and the bacon maple donut logs. I eat like two. I cannot wait untll they open their location uptown on Tchoupitoulas. But they may be competing with district donuts (new kid in town) although they are a lot more expensive. really cannot wait until their Tchoup location is opening. Just a few more weeks....

Charles H.

Yelp
IF YOU MISS HUBIG'S PIES opt for the glazed lemon-cream filled. IF STEEL MAGNOLIAS is your favorite movie, get the red velvet & cream cheese. IF YOU'RE TOWED & FINED on street cleaning Thursday a box of 3 is just $4! 3 stars because they run out way too early

Derek R.

Yelp
One word: AWESOME!!! Let's start with maple and bacon. Sinfully delicious! PB&J? Creamy and bursting with flavor! Red velvet? Velvety smooth! Or how about some donut ice cream? It's run by ex-NOPD... C'mon... Really? ALL TRUE. You NEED TO try this place. Seriously! It's doesn't get better!

Nathan R.

Yelp
Grabbed the maple bacon long john ones and a few others got the kids and were very fresh and good. Plenty of bacon pieces on the maple glaze ! Very friendly service here also.

Chris N Ashley S.

Yelp
HOLY AWESOME MAPLE AND BACON DONUT, BATMAN! We also got an eclectic selection of the other donuts to share among the 6 of us. My other favorites were the Blueberry Glazed cake donut, and the orange glazed one too. Do yourself a favor, go!

Emily V.

Yelp
I had my first artisan donut a few weeks ago in Brooklyn and when I heard this place was only a block away from my cousin's house I HAD to go. Very few things will get me up before 10 AM on a day off. Artisan donuts is one of them. We got there by 9:30 AM which was lucky because we snagged the last bacon maple logs (3 of them...we're big eaters). I was amazed at how huge the pieces of bacon on the donut were. They are not fooling around! It was delicious and huge. I tried the red velvet donut which I found underwhelming. Not bad, just not my favorite. The eclair was good, but I'm not an eclair person. My favorite by far was the dulce de leche donut. It was just a yeast donut with a fluffy white frosting on it but it was perfectly balanced and I devoured that one while barely looking at the rest. The rest of the day was a donut coma. That's ok. It was worth it.

Kris A.

Yelp
Ok I admit, the yelp pics of the maple bacon donut and crazy talk of ice cream donut sandwiches had me curious. I literally took a bite of all the specialty ones they had(4 ) and was full. Thats how rich they are,esp in the mernin' time. The iced coffee was cheaply priced and tasty. Next visit I plan to go after lunch and try the ice cream donut sandwich. Personally,i think a good hot glazed donut is all I need. But none the less, blue dot has me curious for more.

Simi M.

Yelp
I'm new to the Midcity/Lakeview neighborhood but was itching to find a nearby donut place to take a dozen to work every now and then. As always, trusty ol' Yelp led me to Blue Dot on Canal. I'm kinda a planner so as soon as they opened I called in for a dozen glazed donuts for my first ever Blue Dot experience. I got there 10 minutes later and they were perfectly boxed up and ready for me. I also got a solo glazed and a milk for myself because I knew I wouldn't be able to resist breaking into the box but didn't want to mess up the presentation--all of this came to $10 if I remember correctly. The next time, I got some of their more advanced offerings like the wedding cake donut and the red velvet for my office. I only tried the chocolate frosted one out of the variety which I found a tad dry. I think I'm just a simple glazed girl and cake donuts really aren't my thing but I can't knock them for something I haven't tried. A half dozen of their fancier donuts were about $9 bucks so of course the glazed ones are far more economical. They have everything you'd want from a donut shop unless you're looking for things like breakfast sandwiches (or any breakfast items for that matter). If you're worried about them selling out of a particular variety, I'd call ahead and place an order. As for them closing up when they sell out, well.. isn't that the norm with donut shops? The early bird always gets the worm!

Yelp
Generally I judge a donut by how good the frosting is and how soft the cake is. In other words, Krispy Kreme is my gold standard for donuts. But Blue Dot Donuts forces me to reevaluate my standards. Because as far as donuts go, the cake part, or the donut itself, is very good, in addition to the frosting. In addition to the good donuts, there is a patio out front where people can hang out and have their donuts. Generally I think it's kind of sad to eat your donuts where you order them, but the set up here is very chill. I'd come back.

Yelp
I've heard so much about how great the donuts are...they are right! Well, at least the ones I tried. I had the famous maple-bacon longjohn...O-M-G! I'm a fan of sweet and savory, and when it involves bacon, it makes the world a better place :). Real pieces of bacon sprinkled generously on top of a maple glazed long john...it was the best thing I've had in my mouth in ages. (That's what she said.) The prices were great too. $1.55 for the fancies, and 75 cents for the donuts. I want to come back and try the donut ice cream sandwich....the ice cream flavors are wonderful, like Bananas Foster and Pistachio. The apple fritter was ok, I would prefer more apple in my fritter...like Tastee's does. But I happen to know that some of the Tastee's buys them premade so...I'll take this anytime. I have a jelly donut, cream donut and another longjohn I'm trying to save for my daughters but I'm giving them the eye...especially the bacon one.

Yelp
The novelity that is the Bacon Maple Long John got me into the door. It tries to prove to the huge trend that everything is better with bacon. I've seen bacon sundaes, chocolare covered bacon, and now this. To me it was just ok.....I mean the flavors were separate. While the pig covered pastry got me in the door, the rest of their doughnuts got me to come back. I went back and got a doughnut ice cream sandwich. I believe I almost went into diabetic shock! A glazed doughnut cut in half with bananas foster ice cream in the middle. A sticky delicious mess! The rest of their speciality doughnuts are different and really good. Get here early though so you can get them hot.
