Bluefish: A Mixed Bag of Seafood and Service
My Saturday visit to Bluefish presented a study in contrasts. While some aspects shone, others left a distinctly unpleasant aftertaste. Arriving to a bustling scene, we were relegated to bar seating, as the upstairs was closed and the outdoor area sparsely populated. This immediately set a tone of slightly cramped quarters.
The oyster sampler, my appetizer, arrived promptly and offered a decent variety of fresh oysters. A promising start. For my main course, I opted for the Chili Garlic Crunch Salmon Bowl. The dish, as described, delivered a pleasant kick of heat, and the components harmonized well. It was, overall, a satisfying and flavorful meal.
My companion's Scallops and Shrimp with White Cheddar Mac & Cheese, however, was a different story. While the shrimp seasoning was acceptable, the mac & cheese was disappointingly bland. It lacked the rich, cheesy depth one expects from a white cheddar mac.
The most significant drawback was the glacial pace of the main course delivery. While the appetizers arrived swiftly, the wait for our entrees stretched to an uncomfortable length. Thankfully, our bartender/waitress was consistently attentive and personable, making the wait slightly more bearable.
Unfortunately, the dining experience was marred by some concerning observations regarding hygiene and professionalism. Throughout our meal, I witnessed several instances of staff behavior that were frankly off-putting. Waiters scratching their hair and then handling drinks, picking up orange slices for cocktails after touching their hair, and grabbing glasses by the rim were all observed. One waiter was visibly consuming alcoholic beverages throughout the night, which added to a sense of unprofessionalism.
