I met my agent for lunch at Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill last month when I was visiting New York. I was coming off a red eye and a few dazed hours waiting for my hotel room, and this place felt like a lovely haven, where I could relax with a drink and some sushi.
Blue Ribbon is a popular New York restaurant group with several outposts across the country (the one I always see in Los Angeles is at the Grove alongside the Cheesecake Factory). I really enjoy the spicy-tuna-with-crispy-rice school of 90s Japanese fusion, and Blue Ribbon Sushi seems like a reliable place to get it, particularly if you're looking for a spot in the Financial District.
The dining room was attractive and service was good, friendly and efficient. The restaurant felt like it was made for a business lunch, but it was also fun and comfortable--I'm friends with my agent, and we had a great time catching up. I had a cocktail with lunch, and it was quite nice--the Ka, an Asiany margarita variation with Arette Blanco tequila, yuzu, vanilla, and habanero.
The food hit the spot, especially the crispy rice, which did indeed come with spicy tuna, as well as avocado and eel sauce. The ebi shumai was delicious, as was the shrimp tempura, addictive and crispy, served with wasabi mayo. I got the sushi deluxe, which came with ten pieces of assorted sushi and one roll. The sushi was solid. The set came with toro, tuna, amberjack, salmon, sea bass, albacore, aji, scallop, shrimp, and unagi. I had a choice of roll, and I definitely got the spicy tuna.
I really liked Blue Ribbon Sushi and would be happy to come back. The Financial District isn't the most exciting neighborhood for restaurants in New York, but I can always go for sushi rolls and cocktails.
