Taste Ashland, Oregon, at These Global Restaurants

"A native of Sumatra’s Lake Toba region, chef-owner Birong Hutabarat serves traditional Indonesian cuisine at Blue Toba, which is stylishly and colorfully decorated with shadow puppets, textiles, and masks from all over the archipelago. “Guy Fieri was blown away on his visit — he never ate Indonesian food before,” says his wife and co-owner, Leslie Caplan, of the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives host. The Food Network show shares recipes for the restaurant's intensely flavored beef rendang, made with 19 spices and marinated for five hours and opor, a candlenut curry, online." - Sharon McDonnell

The 17 Best Restaurants in Ashland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"This casual Main Street spot is one of the few Indonesian restaurants in the state, specializing in classics like a rich, fall-apart-tender beef rendang and peanut-sauce-laden gado gado. The restaurant’s opor, a Javanese candlenut curry, is an earthy, gently spiced dish well complemented by the restaurant’s house-made sambal." - Susanne Robertson

Dropped in early in the dinner hours, and we were promptly seated. The menu seems streamlined, with excellent Indonesian dishes that one might call classics. The rendang was a surprise for its tenderness and multiple flavors within. The soup was another highlight. Staff was friendly, and the service timely. For downtown Ashland, prices are more than reasonable. Looking forward to trying more dishes soon!

Google
Our whole dining experience was a series of delights, and I’ll be dreaming of this place until we return to Ashland someday. The Rendang was a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, nuanced explosion of flavor; the mocktails were bright and refreshing; the ambiance was soothing and full of charm; and everyone who works there was kind and quick to offer helpful and intriguing information. I loved getting to learn about the ceremonial yellow rice that is served here, and it reinforced the feeling that, in dining here, you have been luckily invited to a ceremony or a special family meal. This place is a gift and a gem - I’ll be back as soon as possible to try everything on the menu!

Google
The Blue Toba special was delightful. The chicken was prepared perfectly. Flavors were wonderful. The homemade sambal was fresh and adds a fiery touch to this well balanced dish. I’m truly grateful for the experience. Staff was amazing too.

My mother is Malaysian, and I was very excited to see an Indonesian restaurant in Ashland. I really wanted to like this restaurant and the reviews seemed promising. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the overall lack of flavor in what we ordered. We started with the Bakwan Jagung (corn fritters) for an appetizer. The fritters were fine, but the condiments they came with were watery and lacked flavor. Our food also came with a homemade sambal (chili sauce) that lacked any flavor other than spiciness. There was no umami flavor that I want in a sambal, which comes from fermented shrimp paste, shallots, and garlic. Maybe this was meant to be a vegetarian-friendly sambal, but I would have liked a chili sauce that had a better balance of spicy, salty, and sour, rather than just straight heat from the chilies. For the main course we ordered Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken) and Mie Goreng (noodles). The chicken was cooked well, but we could not taste any of the 10 spices it was supposedly marinated in. It was served with yellow rice and green beans cooked with spices. But we could not taste any of the spices in the green beans, either. The noodles were the biggest disappointment. Mie Goreng is a stir-fried noodle dish that is meant to be both salty and sweet, with a bit of smokiness from the high heat of the stir-fry ("wok hei"). But the noodles we were served were overwhelmingly sweet with very little saltiness or savoriness, and no sign of any wok hei. In fact, the vegetables looked as if they had been steamed rather than stir-fried. We ended up mixing all of our sambal into the noodles to try to counter the sickly sweet taste of the noodles. Overall, I was very disappointed with my experience at Blue Toba, and I will probably not eat there again.

Google
Food was very good. Nicely decorated interior. Lost one star because they were slightly late opening. Otherwise everything was perfect!

Google
We stopped in for a dinner prior to a Shakespeare performance. The Mie Goreng and Ayam Bakar were very savory and delicious. This was our first time with Indonesian cuisine so we can't make a comparison. We also enjoyed the Black Rice Pudding and two delicious cocktails that exceeded expectations and were potent.

Google
We celebrated my fathers birthday dinner at Blue Toba. I've been eating here well before they moved, but this was my first time back since the move. The food is exactly as I remember it. The meat in my dish was tender & flavorful. The fried rice dish that my son had was new to the menu & incredible! My father also had the fried rice & ate every bite. This is a great restaurant to support!!

Susan McGovney

Google
Owner chef does an excellent job with presenting his Indonesian cuisine. Everything we ate was delicious. They have a non alcoholic drink of cucumber and lime that is so refreshing. Get the forbidden rice dessert, a great way to end you experience?

Yelp
This is an incredible local resource and an under-appreciated gem. One of, if not the, best Indonesian restaurants on the West Coast, right here on Main Street in Ashland. The flavors and ingredients are authentic and well chosen. The menu is relatively small with dishes that will appeal both to those new to Indonesian food as well as those for whom it is "home cooking." I am delighted it is here and could not recommend it more highly. Rather than highlight a particular dish I will say "pick one that appeals to you." They are all good.

Yelp
After a snarky, but still seemly heartfelt apology from the owner I reluctantly retried this restaurant at my dates request. The food was better this time, not cold or burnt so I felt the need to increase a star. We sat at the bar, and despite the place being nearly empty in front and back our drinks still took a very long time. The bartender took our drink order and then disappeared for an extended period of time, leaving a frustrated host/server to apologize for them. This was especially disappointing after being messaged by the owner that our bad experience was due to their past bartenders being bad people (saying specifically that they stole and drank on the job) but NOW they had gotten "good ones". After returning, our bartender apologized and told us they "didn't know those drinks". We had asked for two Tom Collins. As my son says, 'google is a thing.' Not what I would call a good bartender by any means. After ordering two of the expensive signature cocktails instead and an appetizer we were more than underwhelmed and left. With all the other great food and drink in ashland, it wasn't anything to write home about. I'm grateful my date didn't try to talk me into staying there for dinner.

Yelp
Six years after visiting their tiny hole-in-the-wall location in south Ashland, I find they've moved onto Main Street downtown, and are now a full-scale restaurant with regular seating and a more extensive menu. I ordered the Indonesian fried chicken, which had a crunchy but very thin coating. The chicken was two drumsticks, with the meat flayed so that more coating could get on, and also made it easier to eat with a fork (a knife would have been nice too) when it was still piping hot. It was obviously cooked to order, but this did mean the food took 30 minutes to arrive, which is longer than you expect to wait for a lunch special. I noted that the curries and such were described on the menu as full of extensive seasonings but not necessarily hot or spicy. This will be good for those who like a non-spicy option. (The chicken wasn't spicy either.) Plenty of rice, strongly flavored of the coconut milk it was cooked in, on the side.

Yelp
My first Indonesian dinner experience was years ago in Den Haag (Holland) on a Company business trip. The Dutch were once the colonizers over Indonesia and the cuisine followed to the home country. Fast forward a number of years, and you'll find Gayle and I at the gym with our Indonesian trainer (Meike). Not only has she whipped us into shape, we enjoy the cultural conversations as a bonus. Our most recent adventures have been the Bali Express food truck in Reno/Sparks and Tee Jay's Corner Cafe in Carson City. So when we say Blue Toba in Ashland during our recent Downtown walk, how could we resist? Service was prompt and friendly, including a nice short chat with the Chef's Wife as we were leaving. The restaurant consists of a well appointed and spacious dining room in back and a cool and large front bar area. Here's some feedback that Meike provided as we were texting her about our experience (including sending her the menu): - She and her daughter love Opor (Javanese Candlenut Curry), the dish that Gayle enjoyed. It's white curry and Javanese (where she's from). - Blue Toba is a Lake in North Sumatra and probably where the Chef is from. She suggested that I say "Horas! to them. - She and her husband love the "Rendang" dish, which we'll need to order the next time. - She also noted the Bajigur drink that we should have tried. When she was in college in Bogor, she liked to hang out sitting on the side streets with friends drinking Bajigur (especially when it was cold and rainy). - She thought that the menu was a little pricey, and we did point out that this is a more upscale establishment in a theater town. We also agreed that having better ingredients and a creative chef makes a difference, Did I mention that I had the Mie Goreng (Indonesian Fried Noodles) That was a delicious choice as well. At the same time, Gayle and I both agreed that we chickened out and didn't go "full spice" here. That will change when we come back.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Ashland!! Such a welcoming staff and I never get tired of the food

Yelp
My best meal experience yet in Ashland! The smoked Gimlet was divine, followed by the yummy moist Sumatran Chicken with perfectly cooked green beans and flavored rice. Big crowd? - they have lots of room with many tables, bring the whole family! The owner cooks right in front of you in the back dining room, or you can eat in the bar along Main St. for a quiet chit-chat. I also recommend this cocktail - Indonesian Spiced Old Fashion: Four Roses Small Batch, Indonesian Spiced Demerara, Cardamom Bitters, Lemon Expression. $16 Ashland, Oregon. You will love this more exotic dining experience.

Yelp
If you're looking for delicious, authentic and unique cuisine- Blue Toba is the spot. ~ Food: 1) Beef Rendang- 5/5. This was one of the most recommended dishes I saw while looking through reviews and it was delicious. It's my version of comfort food. A hearty and rich meal with an incredible flavor profile. The beef has been cooked with coconut milk but they describe it as a "dry curry" since the beef soaks up all of the juices and gravy. There is nothing dry about it though because the meat is packed with amazing flavor that pairs so well with the rice and green beans that accompany it. 2) Chicken Opor Curry- 5/5. If you're looking for your traditional idea of coconut milk based curry or something somewhat similar to a Thai green curry- this is your dish. Another hotly recommended entree, this was every bit as tasty as it was described. ~ Drinks: 1) Indo spiced soda- 5/5. If you're familiar with south Asian spices this is a great taste on a refreshing mocktail with the most effervescent flavor of spices like star anise and cloves 2) Tipsy toba- 4/5. Butterfly pea flower and vodka this drink is every bit as pretty as it is cool to watch it transform table side. The drink takes on a beautiful purple hue once the lemon juice is added. The drink was a bit stronger than I'd expected. ~ Ambience: Blue Toba is perfect for a casual night with friends or a romantic date night. The interior was cozy and you have a great view of an open kitchen where you can witness the mouthwatering magic happen. ~Service: 5/5. Our waiter/waitress took great care of us and were attentive throughout our meal and also were able to make recommendations. Overall, if you're in the mood to try something new that will leave you satisfied but is scrumptious enough to make you want another plate, check out Blue Toba.

Yelp
My wife and I were walking down the street. We were hungry. We're both vegan, and my wife is gluten free. We both said at the same time, "Hmmmmm, I wonder what Indonesian food tastes like?" We looked at each other, then ran inside the restaurant full of excitement! To answer the question, Indonesian food is damn good! Omg, we ate the fritter appetizer, the curry dinner, and the rice pudding dessert, along with a fancy cocktail. OMG, they were so good!!! 10/10!!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant. We sat overlooking the super clean and precise kitchen. Fresh veg was chopped up every 15 minutes. We ordered the chicken satay and peanut sauce- lovely char and nicely textured peanut sauce, the noodle dish with medium sambal (not spicy at all which was ok!). Had the Betsama Kita and Tipsy Toba (which comes with a magic trick, that's all I'll say). Everything was delicious and would definitely come here again.. if only to smell the smells!!

Yelp
Looking for unique in Ashland,Oregon, as a local I highly recommend it. Wonderfully accessible food with a staff that takes time to explain Indonesian cuisine. It was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives! Lots of great dishes. Don't miss the black rice pudding for dessert, or maybe order it first. The pudding is a chocolate like experience but with no chocolate. Try pairing it with Kencur a very subtle tea. Explore Indonesia while in Ashland and have a unique dining experience.

Yelp
I'm so glad we were able to dine at Blue Toba the one night we hung out in Ashland, Oregon, as this is one of the best restaurants in town! Blue Toba is an Indonesian restaurant with craft cocktails, and was featured in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. We visited Blue Toba on a Friday night for dinner, around 6pm before seeing a play nearby at Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Although they do not take reservations for parties less than six, we were easily able to be seated immediately for the three of us. There's a spacious bar in the front, but they do not serve the dinner menu here. Therefore, we sat in the dining area where most everyone was. The menu had a lot of options for dinner and drinks. To start, I ordered the Bersama Kita cocktail, which was a whiskey base with Arak, an anise-like liquor. It was very booze-forward, which is my favorite kind of drink! For a second cocktail, I had the Java Jawa, which had Arak and was more of a coffee liquor base. It was my dessert! Everyone loved their cocktails though, so would recommend trying one or two to complement your meal here. For food, the menu had a lot of dishes that sounded so appetizing and all of us wanted to try multiple items, so we decided to each order something different and do family style. We ordered the famous rendang, the opor, a Javanese candlenut curry and the Ayam Bakar, which is grilled chicken that's been marinated in coconut milk. All of our dishes came with lime-leaf rice. Of all the dishes, ya gotta try the famous rendang, which was everyone's favorite at the table. The beef was tender and flavorful from the 19 spices and coconut milk that it's cooked in. It's unlike anything else! I could've eaten this dish by myself, but sadly promised to share with others. However, the other dishes were also delicious. The candlenut curry was nice, adding a nutty sauce with some veggies and the coconut grilled chicken was solid. Blue Toba is a restaurant that you must check out in Ashland. Staff was super friendly and the food was fantastic. I can see why there's a lot of praise, including from Guy Fieri for this spot. I would love to come back here again when I'm back in the area.

Yelp
The corn fritters were the best we've ever had in any restaurant across the US hands down. We decided on Happy Hour after getting out of an afternoon play. It was great, $2 off menu items, beer, and wine. We also ordered the Rendang. It was okay, we are not fans of overcooked room temperature stew type meat but everyone has different tastes and the dish seems popular despite the $26 price tag. The draft IPA was very well balanced between citrus and hops. Charnanay was fine but the pour was miniscule. The server was friendly and the bar area attractive and comfortable.

N. K.

Yelp
I got the beef rendang and the mee goreng noodles with tofu. The rendang was excellent! Soft and tender beef, perfectly cooked and seasoned, delicious curry. Also loved the green beans with the rendang. I'd definitely recommend ordering this dish! The noodles were just okay. Probably wouldn't spend that kind of money on them again. I got takeout since I had a dog with me but the restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside and i recommend eating there if you can!

Yelp
What a wonderful find in Ashland. We had Bakwan Jagung (corn fritters) and Gado-gado (tempeh and veg in peanut sauce) before the main dish, Ayam Bakar. We were so satisfied and full from our appetizers that we had to take our main to go. Ate it two days later and it was a taste sensation; the rice was incredibly savory.

Yelp
Fabulous! The food is extraordinary and different from anything that you will find in the region. It is family owned, and the chef and his wife go to Indonesia regularly to retrieve an amazing array of fresh spices, the flavors of which blend beautifully and really come through in all of their dishes. Service especially by Liam is also extraordinary. He is available but doesn't hover. Lesley, the hostess is married to the amazing chef, and designed this beautiful space which offers several nice seating choices. I prefer to sit in the area where you can see the chefs working, plus you get to enjoy the aromas from the kitchen. They are now open for lunch. And they have happy hour specials some days of the week. I was so excited about my lunch. I forgot to take a picture. But I will be back again and again, and I will post some then.

Yelp
Our experience started outside as a woman we met on the street began raving about the food at this restaurant. As a couple from LA passing through Ashland we were looking for a good local spot. We had no idea we were about to stumble into what is perhaps the best authentic Indonesian food in the United States. Everything is homemade, spiced to perfection (we learned that one of our dishes was spiced with over a dozen Indonesian spices and cooked for 5 hour, while being stirred every 15 minutes). We had a lovely chat with Leslie who co-owns the restaurant with her husband and chef (who is apparently an absolute sweet heart and culinary perfectionist) and she told us about the years she lived in Indonesia. The place feels very cozy and her husband makes each dish into this amazing masterful blend of taste and texture and we highly recommend the creamy beef Rendang (it's hard to even describe the delicious complexity of the taste), the tender chicken Ayam Bakar (my girlfriend despises chicken on the bone and she confided that this was her favorite dish of the meal), and the crunchy corn fritters (also, wonderfully spiced). If you're in town, please check this place out. You're welcome in advance

Yelp
Wowweeee!!! Multiple stars and that was already a given when the appetizers came. Great atmosphere and great food. Honestly everything we tried was amazing and there were plenty of veggie options as well. there's also local craft beer and lots of fun mocktailes! Definitely one of the best thorough eating experiences we've had in a while !

Yelp
Super tasty authentic Indonesian cuisine served in a comfortable setting on Main Street/central Ashland. Loved the good service and the owner's friendliness. This is now a favorite spot!

Yelp
We celebrated my birthday at Toba. We ordered the beef rendang, the opor curry and mee goreng, with the corn fritters and gado gado as appetizers. Everything was delicious! We had some refreshing non alcoholic beverages and ended with the black rice pudding, which was amazing. We love the atmosphere, the friendly service and the delicious food. The bar at the front of the restaurant is beautiful. We will be back!

Yelp
Stellar meal with some really interesting cocktails! Came here with a group on a not so busy night, but near enough to the holidays that there were a few large groups holding up the small kitchen and bar staff, but totally understandable as they have 1 chef, and one sous chef and 1 bartender but service was great all the same. The party I was with all got all different cocktails and I was a particular fan of the Jack of All Trades drink, which was quite delicious. The corn fritters and chicken satay were STELLAR. The kitchen was nice enough to add a 5th skewer and a 5th fritter as we were a group of 5 and they usually only have 4 pieces of each. We ordered just about everything on the menu as well, the highlight was the Beef Rendang. It really, REALLY was the best thing on the menu and I would come back for just that rendang. The fried noodles with chicken were also stellar, but honestly, you can't go wrong with the food here. Everything is made to order and SO delicious. We even had the dessert and LOVED it. Everything here was spectacular and it was a true highlight of my time in Ashland.

Yelp
I am a fan of Indonesian food for years but until recently, even the diverse Bay Area was lacking in offerings. So, imagine my surprise when I found out that Ashland a small town, right across the state line into Oregon not only offers Indonesian food but authentic Indonesian food. It was our first meal in Oregon on the way up to Portland for Chicken Opor and Beef Rendang and our last meal of the previously sold-out Satay and more Rendang before leaving. The rendang has a bit of heat so perfect for a bite or two for me while the non-spicy but still super flavorful Chicken Opor that is a candlenut curry and the Balinese Satay was all mine. By that second visit, we were greeted like old friends with Sumatran Chef Birong Hutabarat taking time to talk to us about his spices. Bi-annual visits for 6 weeks back to Indonesia to handpick spices to dry before bringing it back to give us that flavor bomb in his made from scratch dishes. Now I know why they were one of the top 3 ethnic restaurants in the State of Oregon that would blow your mind. Mind officially blown, twice! If you do plan on visiting, make sure to call the day before to confirm their hours of opening as he sometimes is closed for a day off or of course his trip back to Indonesia. Plans are in the works to move into a new space Downtown as well but regardless of where, as long as Chef Birong is in the kitchen, you are sure to be getting an authentic taste of Indonesia.

Yelp
Delicious interesting tasting food and drinks. If I lived close, I'd go there everyday for lunch. The service is fantastic and friendly, Julie was our kind waitress and one of the chef's name is Chad. I didn't catch the other staffs' names but they're all professional and service with warm smiles. The Ambiance was very welcoming and has wood sculptures that felt like Indonesia / Asia.

B B.

Yelp
Super gouge prices. The food is okay but they do use lots of salt and sugar. I had the Mie Goreng with chicken and my partner had Rendang. Not terrible but certainly not worth the cost; it's a bit of a tourist trap. Don't recommend this place.

Annie S.

Yelp
Sweet and delightful service, beautiful well thought out atmosphere and incredible food. I love it here. 10/10.

Yelp
Exceptional cuisine, unique flavors, top level service, and a cute ambience, even with the airy high ceilings.

Yelp
Loved our lunch at Blue Toba -- fantastic cocktails, fresh, vibrant ingredients, great service. Looking forward to going again.

Yelp
Dinner at Blue Toba was an amazing experience. Welcoming staff and the ambiance is very tranquil. Great cocktails and the food was incredible. We highly recommend it and the I'll definitely come back.

Yelp
The service was wonderful, the owner and staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was authentic Indonesian and was delicious. The setting was very pleasant and very relaxing. Definitely will come back again when traveling through the area.

Yelp
I used to be a regular on this restaurant and the food is good (although it gets old when there's a limited menu), now the biggest disappointment with this restaurant happened on my first and last time buying takeout out. Here's why, they have the face to charge $8 for a side of yellow rice, AND another $8 for take out (tip?) - in what planet anybody will charge you a tip for selling their own food (take out - no service at all). This is ridiculous- sorry but I'm out. Never again, I don't like this attitude of taking your money, and yes they say there is a 15% extra charge on the website - for what??? What's the service provided again? - they should tell you in advance if you are making the order right there, so it's your choice if you want to throw more money at them or not. Ridiculous!
google avatar

Thomas P.

Yelp
The food was all full of flavorful spices but nothing with too much heat (which is preferred to me but the owner would like you to know you can purchase a side of sambal to add spicy heat). Cocktails were mostly a hit, particularly the old fashion. Relaxed and informal environment as well as service. All that good being said, the bill was surprisingly big so prices trend high.

Yelp
Great food and serve. Had not had Indonesian food for a while. Trevor was our waiter. WE sat with a view of the working Kim. While looking at restaurants to try when we had another visit to Ashland, The Yelp reviews made us decide to try Blue Toba. E were not disappointed. We split the dishes that we tried. We started with a very tasty corn fritter appetizer. The fritters we the sauce were a great starter. We also shared 2 main dishes. Rendang with incredibly moist and savory beef, (slow cooked and or 5 hours). We also had the Mia goreng with chicken. An Indonesian variation of Lo mein. We have had cocktails. Well worth visiting while in Ashland.

Yelp
I pass through Ashland a few times a year. I have always looked forward to dropping by Blue Toba for the rendang. I never went to Blue Toba for the customer service or ambiance. There was little to be had, and that was fine. It's always been all about the rendang. During my most recent visit I saw that the proprietor opened a new downtown location with an attached cocktail bar. The prices seemed to have doubled to cover the new digs and staffing. I thought why not and ordered two cocktails off the menu, along with two orders of rendang. The rendang was still incredible, exactly as I'd remembered from the previous location. Paying twice as much per serving was disappointing and exorbitant even post-Covid. The cocktails went well enough with the cuisine, but added nothing to the overall experience, and I doubt I would want to try them again. Same with the decor. I enjoyed seeing the masks and crafts decorating the walls, but again, it didn't really add to the experience, because it's always been all about the rendang. I'm happy for the proprietor, and I hope things work out, but the charm and intimacy seems to have been lost in the supposed 'upgrade'. I'll miss the outstanding take-out.

Ruth S.

Yelp
Service was poor. One of the guests got her meal 30 minutes after she ordered. I didn't feel like I got enough food.
google avatar

Raymon L.

Yelp
Incredible experience all around, from the ambience and service to the absolutely delectable food. The host, the bartender, and Leslie (co-owner) were stellar and so welcoming. If you have the chance, please ask her about the amazing backstory of this place. Made it her mission to represent Indonesia and draw upon a personal, cross-cultural experience. Our favorites: Cocktails - Bersama Kita and the Old Fashioned are one of a kind, you owe it to yourself to try. Food -Sate was one of the best we've had - the Indonesian noodles were creamy and crunchy and had a nice spice. Perfectly balanced -The beef was soooo good! Do yourself a favor and eat here, because this isn't an experience easy to replicate

Yelp
This place never fails! So full of flavor. It's one of our favorites places in Oregon. If you're in the Ashland area, looking for a good experience with a perfect meal and great customer service, go to Blue Toba. You won't regret it.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place SO BAD. We've been waiting to try it for months now and finally made it out. The fact is, the food was just not good. We tried every vegetarian dish on their (very small) menu. It was all flavorless, undercooked, and lacking variation. Cute atmosphere, lovely people, just didn't enjoy any part of the meal :-(

Yelp
The BEST food I have ever eaten in my entire life. If you haven't gone here yet you have to!! It is worth every penny. It is life changing. Every dish was incredible, I am so grateful it exists. Will be dreaming of this place
google avatar

Yelp
Didn't see an updated menu...so thought I was paying $16 + $15 for two plates but apparently they updated it and I ended up spending $60 on 2 plates?!? That's pretty ridiculous.

Yelp
First time having Indonesian food for me but not for my sister in law who had a vacation home in Bali for a while. It was outstanding, the Mie Goreng I had she pronounced better than any she had in Bali. All the dishes were fantastic, (be careful if ordering "spicy") as was the service and value.

Shawn D.

Yelp
As a local we've been here a few times and I think it's time to move on. Food and menu is great but all of the staff are terrible and this is clearly a sign of the owners not being savvy enough in their vetting process. Absolutely horrible waitress, poor service, drinks that take 15-20 minutes to arrive, and you can see the horrible expressions on the cooks faces. If you want an amazing dining experience I would recommend going somewhere else. If you want decent food and don't mind mildly coarse staff, go for it.

Yelp
I was surprised by all of the good reviews. The food was bland for Indonesian, and I could not distinguish nearly the number of flavors promised in the menu descriptions. My dish definitely did not contain some of the ingredients listed. The noodles and curries were just sweet without flavor complexity. Southeast Asian cuisine is a family favorite, but nobody remarked on the food as we ate. We were the only people in on a Saturday night. The ambiance was nice. We ordered three dishes and an appetizer. The food took 45+ minutes to arrive. It's all relative to our context--not a very good meal for $80+, but we would have been happy if we were in a shopping mall food court. This is a hard time for restaurants and so maybe corners are being cut, but Im not sure it's worth keeping open as is.

Yelp
The gulai is one of the best dishes ive had in my life. Im glad the owner moved downtown but i dont get to go as often since the prices got more expensive from moving to a more expensive area in town. Love to see the business progress though. Very much recommend stopping in for a cocktail and some gulai!

Yelp
Off-the-charts food. We ate there for the first time two weeks ago and we're blown away by the richly textured flavors that are obviously created with care and love. Our new destination with friends and out-of-town guests.

Yelp
I do not ever write reviews but I guess there is a first for everything. Do yourself a giant favor and do not eat at Blue Toba. I wasn't going to write this review but after reading the multitude of completely rude and offensive attacks from the owner back at the customers who have reviewed her establishment I felt compelled to write something here. Regardless of how awesome you think your restaurant is- you should really work on treating your customers with respect, regardless of if you agree with them. As the saying goes, the customer is always right. Their experience is their experience. A decent and successful business owner would read honest reviews and consider how to improve their business for the better. A bad business owner writes angry and offensive attacks back at the customer who has already had a bad meal.

Yelp
Delicious food, great ambiance and great service. We loved watching the chefs work in the open kitchen. Our server was super sweet and took the time to chat with us and give us some suggestions for nearby hiking spots, as well. Cocktails and mocktails were both pretty and yummy too.

Yelp
The food was actually pretty good. But the service was amazingly slow and the owner was oblivious. Look, sometimes you're short staffed and people are often patient and understanding. But when your customer states they have tickets for the theater at 8pm, the restaurant should let you know the kitchen has a problem. Our server was very apologetic but the owner/manager was dismissive and in total denial. We barely made it but other parties were just walking out. And then they added 18% gratuity on a party of four! To the owner: talk to your customers. Let them know what's going on. Make them happy rather than ignoring them.

Yelp
Excellent food. Great options for mocktails. An ambience that's hard to beat in any town.
