Bob’s Donuts Review - Nob Hill - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Donuts are usually something you eat at breakfast or while fake browsing at a car dealership, but at Bob’s Donuts you can walk in at 4am since it’s open 24 hours a day. There’s usually a short line, but depending on when you go, it could be filled with families looking for a snack or people getting something to eat after locks its doors. Go plain classic donut if you want—they’re puffy and amazing—but odds are you want a maple buttermilk bar or an apple fritter instead. " - Lani Conway

Google
I discovered this French boulangerie back in 2020 after a friend’s glowing recommendation, and it’s been a personal favorite ever since. Whether I’m stopping by on a drive along Highway 29 toward Napa or just in need of something comforting and delicious, this café never disappoints. Top recommendations? The Croissant Sandwich with Chicken Adobo is phenomenal, and their salads with extra bacon and chicken are fresh, filling, and full of flavor. But the real standout for me is the morning bun—sweet, perfectly baked, and always satisfying. If you’re in the area, treat yourself.

Google
This is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious treat! We had a banana cream ( don’t know whether I got the name right) , and pineapple something. They were both curiously delicious. The banana-flavored donut had cream for an extra-sweet finish, it was pillowy and perfect. The place is clean, and even with decorative statement pieces, clutter-free.

Google
Bob’s Donuts is my all time favorite donut place to this day so when I stumbled on this location I was ecstatic. I did not know they had opened a shop in Mill Valley, I’ve only ever tried their original shop on Polk street or their recent expansion in the city. This was a nice and convenient treat after a long day hiking. Not only does this spot have lot of parking in front but the inside is very clean and modern. They had lots of freshly baked donut options to choose from but I always go with just the classic plain glazed which has to be their best. On this visit they had some seasonal ones like pumpkin custard and apple cider which also looked good. Will be back and make sure to stop by anytime I’m hiking or exploring in the area now.

Google
Amazing donuts. Their specialty donuts are absolutely delicious. We tried the guava donuts and regretted not getting more since we live an hour away. They had alot of different options to choose from and on top of that they have the classics. The store is clean with indoor sitting. Free parking on site.

Google
Amazing choice of donuts. The service was a little hit and Miss but was polite. Definitely recommend the donuts!

Google
Over rated. The donuts here are just pure sugar. It was overly sweet and expensive for having no flavor but an overly sugary taste. The Bavarian creme filing tasted weird and had a bad after taste. The raspberry filled ones just had waaay too much filing, bad donut to filing ratio. If you're going to charge over $3 per donut, make sure they're at least good. I'd gladly pay $5 per donut if they taste good. Oh and good doesn't equal more sugar. The blueberry donuts were good though. Wanna know what fresh not overly sweet donuts taste like? Go to 145 Columbus Avenue in SF... at the corner of Kearney and Columbus, a place called "My Happy Donut".

Douglas B.

Google
One of my favorite donut shops in the city now has a location in Marin. While it may not be open 24 hours a day like the SF location, it certainly has all of my favorites like their San Francisco locale.

Achiko N.

Google
This morning I was there to pick up and the guy with glasses behaved very badly. He doesn't even know the order. He makes sweets for whoever he decides and takes them out. I let five or six people in. I stood there and he didn't make any for me. He moves around rudely and talks rudely. It's very bad. I won't go in again and I recommend that no one ever go into that bakery again because of that guy with glasses.

Yelp
We tried the old fashioned, the glazed, and the cronut, and every single one was amazing. The old fashioned had that perfect crispy edge with a soft center, the glazed was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the cronut was unreal--flaky, sweet, and completely addictive. Everything tasted super fresh, and you can tell they put real love into their donuts. If you're anywhere nearby, this place is a must-try! The service was great--friendly, quick, and super welcoming. The place itself has that classic donut-shop vibe: cozy, clean, and always smelling like fresh-baked goodness. It's the kind of spot that makes you happy the moment you walk in.

Yelp
Not only does this place have undeniably the best donuts in Marin (literally 10 times better than Johnnys) but I feel compelled to leave a great review after just witnessing an act of kindness by an employee. I'm sitting here with my daughter and an old man with a cane slowly made his way to the counter before panicking while searching for his wallet. Without saying anything he turned towards the door to leave. The guy behind the counter stopped him and asked if he needed anything and the old man, while looking quite embarrassed explained that he forgot his wallet. Without skipping a beat the employee pulled out his own wallet and paid for the man's donut before sending him on his way. That's how you're supposed to do it. I'll always applaud a little kindness.

Yelp
Fresh and delicious donuts! Great customer service. I enjoy the variety of donuts to choose from. Parking is small but worth it!

Yelp
Best donuts in Marin! I always get a coffee to go and donuts. I love that it's really close to where I live.

Yelp
Drove past Bobs twice and loved the outside look of the place. Yesterday we went in and tried it out. When you walk in local art is up on the walls and was really clean inside. It was Saturday and a busy morning but they kept it clean inside. I had the crème brûlée donut, crunchy sweet topping with yummy cream inside. My boys had the fruity pebble donut and the maple croissant donut which he picked because guy behind counter said it was the best. My son enjoyed it. ONLY disappointment was NO Gluten Free options. Which they made clear with a sign on front door. They have Vegan Donuts though. We went across the street at Good Earth and got her a blueberry muffin which she enjoyed. One worker super nice young kid smiled and offered suggestions. Other two employees young adult girl and young adult male. No hello or eye contact with anyone in store but were chatty amongst themselves.
google avatar

Gnomie E.

Yelp
Decent donuts overall. I am not a fan of their mochi donuts, but I love their old fashioned donut and they absolutely nailed it. The prices are fair, the service is fast, and I really enjoy the vibe inside, especially the artwork made by kids on display.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Our stop at Bob's Donuts was great. Really the best selection of cake and raised donuts, bars, twists and fritters - and even beautiful croissants! Everything on display is fresh and mouth watering. We opted for the cinnamon roll, chocolate raised donuts and apple fritter. Absolutely perfect! Very friendly staff, too.
google avatar

Sha G.

Yelp
Made fresh and always delicious. It's a perfect sweet treat. I walked into store with the employee filling a massive box being filled for charity. It makes me feel so good supporting a store that doesn't waste food. The space inside is welcoming with tables to sit and snack. Service is kind and patient. Again, Bob's donuts is a must for a small or big treat.

Yelp
the best donuts on the planet! you'll need a bib to eat the jelly donut there is so much yummy raspberry jelly inside ! we ordered one of each not one disappointed ! loved the old fashioned buttermilk !!!

Mark P.

Yelp
When Bobs opened in mill valley, it opened promptly at 6 with all the display racks full of fresh made donuts. Now , with someone else running the place, the store never opens on time, the display cases are mostly empty, and, worse of all, I was sold two stale, day old donuts this morning. I took a bite out of each and tossed them. Disgraceful decline in quality. Worse than Safeway donuts.

Yelp
Bobs is an institution! Their donuts are fluffy and yummy. Love that they do Hawaiian and Puerta Rican flavors too. Favorites are bacon maple, guava cheese, apple fritter, strawberry whipped cream. Wish there was a proper eclair. Nice family business.
google avatar

Jade J.

Yelp
The glaze is pretty good, not too oily, not too sweet - kept it classic. The cinnamon sugar cronut was flaky & not too oily - super soft inside and a nice crunch on the outside. This was a great sweet treat post-hike! They have such a mass variety of donuts that I need to come back and try them all.

Yelp
donuts are an odd item to be an item in health conscious marin. i suppose that's less about donuts and health and more about how there are as many different ways any thing can be viewed as there are viewers. also, humans aren't known for consistency, which i suppose is why god made ai. i wonder about ai though, if it's artificial i mean how can that be better than the real deal human version, since we know we're not consistent at all. i'll have to have a little time to myself now to think this through and will keep you informed as i tend to change my mind fairly often. but as for donuts, these are good insofar as they're eye-catching, colorful, swollen with all the presumed goodness a donut can offer. i wasn't a regular here until recently when i took up with someone living close by, but after a few weekend morning trips for supplies i'm ready to stand back a bit and think about all this, even heretically about the yin/yang of it all. my go-to has been donut alley in larkspur, mainly because if has small, old fashion donut shop quality, quaint with mom and pop owners until recently anyway. but the thing i think i like in the alley version of donut is the texture, it seems lighter, more breadlike. bob's' soak up more oil so the paper bag feels heavy and the paper itself literally drips free oil if you let it sit for awhile in the kitchen. no matter how you cut it, donuts are in a category of food that goes back as far as process of cooking in a container of hot oil, which is a long way really. fried dough is one of the first of all cheap thrill foods, which includes pancakes, beignets, funnel cakes, beerocks, churros, loukoumades, bomboloni... but no matter what you call it from wherever, it's still got to have (unless it's a cracker) a rising agent whether yeast or baking powder and if it's fried too soon it'll be heavy. in a way, not meaning critical particularly, but i think bob's suffers a bit from being short on rising time, maybe due to volume of output. on a completely different note, but quite relevant here due to the expansive use of the food colors to make these things look like large rainbow molecules, how will these all look without fd&c red 40, or blue 1/2, or yellow 5... green 3? trix are for kidz, right?

Yelp
Best blueberry cake doughnut I've tried in a long time. While searching for the best donut in California, I happen to find this place and it did not disappoint.
google avatar

Tila B.

Yelp
Best doughnut shop I've ever stepped into highly recommend. They have so many different options of doughnuts to choose from. I didn't even know where to start. One thing I'd like to point out is the customer service here. I asked for his name he said his name was Andrew and from the moment I walked in he was polite helpful and very knowledgeable of everything they had to offer. I always appreciate employees that's go the extra mile. Had to throw that out there. Super cute place!! Stop by if you're in town, I'll definitely be back!! High five bobs doughnuts!!!

Yelp
Really cool place. Dropped by to pick up a couple donuts. Friendly staff and the donuts are delicious. I really like their cinnamon toast crunch donut. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
I'm keeping this one short and sweet. So happy Bob's infamous donuts out of SF made it to Marin, took over the old Bamboo Hut space. Ample parking, bright space, difficult to navigate during rush hour along this junction. Still less hectic than the city. Hope they expand beyond the North Bay, and it's perfectly fine to stay in the 415. 'Til next time ~ cheers & see you on Yelp (SYOY)!

Yelp
I saw Bob's Donuts Instagram post saying they had vegan donuts on a Friday and visited their Mill Valley location the very next day at 7am (they open at 5am). Oh my goodness! Beyond what I could describe as great. Their vegan donuts are without question the best in California, not just our area, they blow away everyone else. The flavor, texture, perfect sweetness, all just outstanding. We ordered the vegan apple fritters and two glazed donuts, one chocolate and one plain. They were all perfect, there's no better way to describe it other than they were perfect. The apple fritters were still warm! Just outstanding. I haven't seen a vegan apple fritter ever so this was an extremely special treat. That's not to say that their regular donut wasn't great too, it was. It had a really great texture and flavor. Wow. It's hard not to want one of these as I'm writing this review a few days later. That just means I have to go back ASAP. Bob's has a great vibe. Super clean interior with cool branding. Their little pink boxes are a nice touch. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that they don't display the vegan donuts anywhere along their long display counter. When we arrived, we didn't see any signs indicating which donuts were vegan, if any. When we asked, the employee directed us to one of the trays on the racks behind him with a sad looking handwritten sign that said "vegan". He had to describe what options were available. Kind of off-putting from a consumer standpoint if I'm being honest. Maybe it was just that day? I guess I'll find out during my next visit. They only had three vegan options that morning, of which we tried all three. If they would have had more, I would have tried them all. Great coffee by the way too and fairly easy parking out front.

Yelp
What a treat Bob's Donuts in Mill Valley. Great selection of fresh donuts even late morning on a Sunday. This place is super clean and efficient and they have parking too. It's always a pleasant experience coming to Bob's because their team is so nice.
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Tons of parking, clean, and cute, but the donuts just aren't all that. The apple fritter was huge but it had so few apples - mostly batter. Behind the counter most of the fritters appeared overcooked, too. I pointed out the least brown one to try. Strawberry lemon-filled donut was filled with the same electric lemon-colored filling I'd expect to see in a Dolly Madison fruit pie. I'd hoped for a lemon pastry CREAM. Think jelly filled donut, but yellow and lemon. Chocolate coconut donut was also meh. Neither the chocolate or the coconut stood out as flavorful but it was probably the best of the three that I tried. $10+ for 3 meh-donuts.

Yelp
Yay! So glad we have a Bob's in Marin now. Not gonna lie, the parking situation is not great. Bob's is located in the busy Tam Junction so unless you're already going south bound on Almonte Blvd it's best to park in the lot near Cafe del Soul or Walgreens and walk over. The inside is big compared to their SF locations. There were plenty of donut options, from your basic to your frou frou. Donuts are reasonably priced at $2. Tasty and satisfying. Thumbs up!
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Back when I was young and single and went out on weekend nights, my friends and I would occasionally end up at the Polk Street bars, which were usually disappointing landscapes of douchiness. The real appeal was fresh baked donuts at Bob's across the street at 2 am. The taste of that light, springy fresh-out-the-fryer donut is something I have thought wistfully about in the years since. Now that I live over the bridge and my idea of a good weekend night is watching reruns of Psych while folding laundry, I have no plans to recapture that Polk street donut glory. So I was excited to learn that a Bob's had opened up in Marin. As is fitting for the location, this Bob's is not open at 2 am and seems to focus more on gourmet flavors than old school Bob's. We picked up a creme brûlée, chocolate old fashioned, s'mores, and a savor donut. I was surprised by the low priced! Much more reasonable than the equally gourmet Johnny's. We enjoyed the sweet donuts, but my husband found the juxtaposition of savory filling and sweet donut base too jarring--his fault, probably, for making a riskier choice than he was prepared for. A cute location--limited parking, boy that's mill valley. I will go back!

Keri S.

Yelp
This place!! Don't miss it! We got a good cup of coffee and some wonderful donuts. One of them was a tiramisu donut. We didn't get a chance to eat it, so we warmed it up 2 days later and it tasted like it was just made! So good!
google avatar

Emy B.

Yelp
My perfect excuse to get my very own huge donut for my birthday! I came really for the malasadas, but ended up getting quite a bit more because why the hell not?! Staff were wonderfully friendly and the guy that helped me gave me a great tip that if we didn't finish our big donut that we could make French Toast out of it (which we did!!!) Donuts were worth the trek and I love that they have a parking lot where I happily ate a Guava Malasada in my car with a cup of their delicious hot coffee. The place is beautifully clean and just walking up to the big display counter was exciting. Thanks to Bob's to making my birthday fun & delicious.

Yelp
We arrived at Bob's donuts at 5:47, 13 minutes before closing time. We hurried to get there before they closed. The doors were already locked yet all the donuts were still out and there was a woman working there. This is on Tuesday, January 28. I knocked on the glass as I tripped and fell and asked pointing to my wrist that it was still plenty of time to buy donuts. She shook her head. No, we are closed. Another person after me went and did the same thing. If the hours are to be open until 6 PM, then they should be open until 6 PM. This woman apparently just wanted to leave at 6 PM and I don't think that it's fair to customers that rush to get there before closing with plenty of time should be disappointed to find that the store is closed because she wanted to leave. Hope management hears about this. Your donuts are fabulous. She is unacceptable as an employee.

Jeff C.

Yelp
The donuts are great, the service at the front counter in the morning is not. I've applied for mortgages faster than it takes to get a box of a dozen Old Fashions. The counter staff seems to have no regard for a line of people trying to get their donuts and get out in the a.m. As good as Bob's donuts are, and they are very very good, it's not worth waiting on the sluggish counter staff in the morning at this location.
google avatar

Caitlin M.

Yelp
I am a huge donut fan. Bob's are awesome. 10:30 am on a Wednesday, and still a great selection (not always the case at many places). Since this was a first visit and everything looked great, I wanted a sampler of donut types that are often telling as to the quality of the donut-maker and the place. To that end we selected a plain old fashioned, a pumpkin donut dusted with cinnamon sugar, a buttermilk bar, a cinnamon-sugar cake, an apple fritter, some donut holes, and three Malasadas (custard, guava, blueberry). Plain old fashioned donuts are ridiculously hard to get right. They have to be sweet, but not too sweet, a hint of nutmeg is good, crunchy crisp outside, tender inside, a bit of oily goodness, but not greasy. Bob's gets 5 stars on all. The pumpkin donut had nice color and great flavor. They are clearly using real pumpkin puree. The apple fritter had a good balance of apples to batter. It wasn't overly glazed. Not greasy -- as so many AF are. The Malasadas! I have eaten a lot of these in Hawaii -- both on Oahu and the Big Island. These stand right there with the best you'll find in HI. A goodly amount of filling. The fillings tasted "real"; not artificially flavored. There were blueberries in the blueberry filling; the guava had a pleasant red pink color and lots of floral notes. The custard, my favorite, had the right amount of vanilla and had a soft creamy consistency. One person in our group, who admittedly is a custard expert, thought the filling was a bit "overset" (too much cornstarch). In my mind it was perfect. Clean. Bright. Tables! Fun artwork. And best of all, tremendously nice folks working there. A shout out to Andrew for his warm hospitality!
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Cons; worst ingress/egress in the game. Patiently waited for donuts with my son, walk back to car only to get splashed with water as a car rushed into the small parking lot. This splashed our not fully closed box of donuts, rendering them uneatable. I threw my Apple Fritter at the car of an awful situational awareness culprit, and we left. Classic Marin County clueless driver behind that wheel. Pros: inside the service is great, clean, nice. Pros: Marin County lacks quality donut spots, this is easily among the #1 or #2 seed already. Summary: What an awful parking lot. To the car that splashed us, I hope you enjoy Apple Fritter in your windshield, and I hope we cross paths again, I have an Old Fashioned with your name on it.

Vyvianna Q.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had. The donuts were incredibly dry, and when I politely asked if I could have a fresh one, both workers refused without any attempt to help. I took one bite and was instantly disappointed. Despite being kind and courteous to the staff, I felt ignored -- the man working upfront kept his face down and avoided eye contact throughout our interaction. When I expressed my concerns, he simply said he couldn't do anything and didn't care if my donut was dry or not. Very disappointing experience overall. We left our donuts on the table. We didn't bother taking it home.
google avatar

Gio L.

Yelp
"Donut forget to treat yourself." sometimes you just need a little sweetness in your life. One of Marin's best donuts.

Alim Y.

Yelp
Absolutely love Bob's Donuts. I don't get to come up to the North Bay too often, but whenever I do I make sure to swing by this place. My favorite are the filled donuts, perfect balance of sweetness and fruitiness. Andrew is the man, super helpful and cheerful, I enjoy our interactions a lot. The place is clean and spacious, clear display of choices and delicious coffee. Will keep coming here. Thank you Andrew!

Sharon S.

Yelp
I've been wanting to go here for years and it did not disappoint. it was a difficult decision and I regret not buying more.
google avatar

Belen S.

Yelp
Tasty donuts ! Ordered through DoorDash and they called me to let me know they were out of Apple Fritters. The connection was not great so I couldn't really communicate with the lady. They then sent me a vegan Apple fritter which was delicious and extra donuts ! Amazing service. I have not been to their location but will soon visit.
google avatar

Jack W.

Yelp
A very large and reasonably priced apple fritter caught my eye at the new location in Mill Valley. Unfortunately it lacked one important ingredient, pieces of apple. I love these, but this one didn't cut it.

Ian M.

Yelp
Their heavy handed approach to donut making is more like a cake. For example, the donut holes are very doughy very thick very heavy not light and airy like I've had in most places. It's almost like their amateur talent is trying to figure out how to make donuts. kind of sucks because it's the only donut place without going to san Rafael.
google avatar

Harald F.

Yelp
Yummy donuts! Definitely better than some of the other donut shops around. And they have parking!
google avatar

Sonia C.

Yelp
Classic donut shop near crowded intersection. One of the best crème brûlée donuts I've had ever. My bf got the masaladas and loved them.
google avatar

Jeff Z.

Yelp
Due to their proximity I've been here several times now and the staff is always pleasant. As for the donuts, glazed raised, bars and jelly filled; they are pretty dense and chewy. I prefer a slightly lighter donut. I will say they do have a great selection of various jelly filled. Glazed Old Fashioned; generally this is one of my favorites, but theirs has a TON of glaze on them. Doesn't matter if it's the regular glaze or maple, there's a twice the amount of glaze you'd get elsewhere. In fact, every one I've had has a dried pool of glaze on the bottom of it. I like sugar, but there's double what there should be IMO. At most donut shops I can usually eat two, but at Bob's I'm full after one. Is that a good thing?
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
Tasty donuts, with a huge selection. Store is light, bright, and clean. Excellent, friendly service. I'm partial to the SF location, as I liked the taste of the donuts better there. I'll be back soon for a taste test!

Alexis M.

Yelp
Love the donuts, go there almost every day, the service is great, people are friendly. I personally like old-fashioned and filled donuts. Cronut is great. also there are mochi donuts on Friday through Sundays.

Rory D.

Yelp
I was so disappointed. I'd been wanting to try this for awhile. At 9:30 am I ordered a buttermilk, twist and maple cake. The maple cake was good. The other two were so stale we couldn't eat them. They ended up in the trash. I'll never go back.
google avatar

Austin F.

Yelp
We first tried Bob's Donuts while on vacation in the city a few years ago and were not very impressed. We must have arrived too early because the selection was minimal. Despite this, we had to try this new Mill Valley location and were pleasantly surprised. Their selection is HUGE and their prices are unbelievably good for Marin. There's so many weird and flavorful donuts from maple bacon to guava, Oreo, and many others. They also have all the classics. The tiger tail is my fav still. If you're still reading this far, just go already. My mouth is watering just writing this review...
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
Excellent variety of super-fresh donuts. Parking in the little space (formerly Bamboo Hut) is mano-a-mano combat, so please be careful. People may want to park across the street. The donut holes are divine as are the old-fashioned donuts!

Ashley P.

Yelp
My family and I come to this location all the time. Not only are the donuts amazing, but also Andrew is so kind. Try their Hawaiian donuts, could not recommend enough.
google avatar

sarah b.

Yelp
Delicious! New kid favorite in town :) Reminds me of a bit of Johnny doughnuts decor when you walk in: crisp and cute. They so far have enjoyed the Oreo donut, fruit loop donut and the cinnamon twist bar so far. All disappeared in minutes. Grab a coffee while you're there. We've never had trouble finding parking. We went at 12p and 11am. I believe there is 5 parking spaces and an additional handicap spot.
google avatar

Jarion M.

Yelp
The best Donuts in Marin! They've got it all in the tradition of VooDoo in Oregon. Including cronuts! Go for the glazed crumb donut: a house specialty...eat it out over something: very crumbly and delicious!
google avatar

Nancy A.

Yelp
So so good it is Absolutely if you're in this area please stop by and enjoy these donuts they are definitely must try must try

Nile B.

Yelp
The donuts here used to be 1.5-2 dollars specifically the creme brulee was 2.50 and now it's 3.50 within a couple months and the donuts are good but the it's not worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Bobs Donuts is one of the best shops in the Bay for sure! I love so many of there originals and their own renditions of timeless classics.
