19 Highly Anticipated Charleston Restaurants to Watch for This Summer, 2021 - Eater Carolinas

"A restaurant group from New York brought Uptown Social to Charleston, and now the partners behind the popular King Street bar want to bring two more restaurants to Ann Street. Bodega will build off of the breakfast/brunch concept already happening at Uptown Social, with New York-style morning sandwiches and coffee. Charcuterie and cocktails will be on the menu in the evening." - Erin Perkins

My boyfriend and I loved it here! The chopped cheese sandwich, cookie’s favorite latte and nutella espresso were the best things we tried from here. We wanted to try everything - everything on the menu sounded delicious. The menu selection was also huge! The food was so good we even came back the next day. Service is fairly quick and the servers were very kind and patient. The aesthetic/atmosphere inside is beautiful - it seemed like we were staring at the walls for forever! Next time we come to Charleston we will definitely be coming here again.

Google
Loved our visit to Bodega! The service was friendly and attentive—our server, Will, was wonderful and made the experience even better. I ordered the Cali Bowl and a cappuccino, and both were absolutely delicious. The Cali Bowl was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying, and the cappuccino was perfectly made with rich, smooth espresso. Great vibes, great food, and a spot I’d definitely return to when in Charleston!

Google
Stopped in for breakfast and was blown away! A tucked away spot that offered great tasting food and a peaceful spot to eat at. The outdoor deck seating was perfect to enjoy the morning. All of our food was great. Definitely recommend the breakfast burritos!

Google
Excellent drink and special coffee options! The food was pretty good as well. The strawberry matcha was excellent. We had a reservation for 8 people and we had a minimum of $300 to spend. Also, if we missed our reservation there was a late fee of $25 per person.

Google
I loved the trendy atmosphere of this restaurant! My boyfriend got a nutella shaken espresso and I got a lucky charms latte, both were delicious! The food was very good too. I usually am not a fan of the diced potatoes, but these are an exception they were seasoned well. We got there around 10:30 on Friday and were seated immediately.

Google
Wow.. all i can say. The Gropfather was one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. Cool vibe inside and super friendly staff. Grabbed some of the baked goods on the way out and they were outstanding as well. Will absolutely recommend this place every day of the week!

Google
Proof that second chances are always worth it! My wife came here a few months ago liked the food. Had bad experience. Asked to come back out to give a second chance and so happy that we did. Kelsey was awesome and making sure that everything for our table was right. Food was great. Definitely suggest cheat bowl. Top to bottom. Everything here was perfect. Definitely coming back!

Google
This low key, very eclectic, absolutely delicious restaurant was amazing. My wife and I had a great experience here today. I had the Gropfather which was an incredibly tasty chicken sandwich and my wife had the chick flick sandwich which was a chicken salad sandwich. Both sandwiches were delectable and we definitely will be back soon.

Yelp
It wasn't busy when i went but it was a Friday late morning. The place seemed nice, the staff was friendly. I only had a donut so I cannot speak too much for the food, but it did look amazing. The donut was tasty, and fresh. I always love a good donut that's fluffy! Would definitely go back for another and try their food as well

Yelp
Awful experience. Bring in a gift card to pay for our meal. Suddenly store unable to accept the gift card because they updated their systems. Manager unwilling to do anything to make it right. If you're looking for good people who are willing to take care of their customers you should find another place to go.

Yelp
I was really excited to try Bodega, the vibes are cute, the menu looked tasty, and the location was great. Our server was doing her best, but apparently you can't build your own sandwich, so she tried to tailor a sandwich on the menu to be vegan. Had I known it was such an issue I would have just ordered something off the menu. Needless to say, my sandwich came out with egg on it. I would definitely go back, but don't expect to be able to customize your order.

Yelp
This place is pretty amazing. Had a hard time finding how to get in this morning because all the doors were locked... but staff is friendly and food is amazing. I'm coming back for sure.

Yelp
I met three others here for a friend's lunch. The gal I drove with and I discussed "lunch" once we were headed back. She brought it up, and once I realized she had a bad experience, we shared our observations and agreed never again. I snapped a photo of my meal only, the Traditional Benedict. Save your money. These were inedible, raw eggs. The whites were still translucent. The potatoes were cold, not even warm, just cold. Just an all-around disappointment for $16+. The $8 watermelon lemonade was good. I should have stopped there. So, I had a $30 lunch (I'm now including the gratuity I left), and I had to eat once I arrived back home. I did leave a gratuity because it wasn't the waiter's fault. However, I left a lower gratuity than I usually would due to the fact that he cleared away four largely still full plates and bowls from the table and never once bothered to ask if everything was okay. Trust me, the portion sizes are not big here, so when you send 50% back to the kitchen and there wasn't much to begin with, it should be obvious to anybody there's a problem. Inside is clean. Lots of televisions playing old cartoons, so could be cute.

Yelp
We needed a quick bite to eat while walking around downtown for brunch. Ordered coffees which were so good! Loved the variety of fun drinks on the menu, need to come back to try the martinis. Breakfast sandwich and home fries were great! Our server was super nice and fast! The patio is super cute and the inside of the restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
The atmosphere & vibes are wonderful. If you're a New Yorker looking for home the food is not it. It's a fancy/ less tasty & Seasoned take on nyc food. The bacon & cheese was not what I know. This can be a biased take as a New Yorker. Love the decor though

Yelp
Friendly service, beautiful outdoor seating area on a perfect morning. I had the low country and it was delicious, my wife the bodega plate and she enjoyed it as well. Tried the Cinnamon Toast Crunch cold brew and it tasted just like you'd think it would! Nice spot for a quick breakfast, sandwich or coffee...
google avatar

Yelp
No Notes, would definitely go back! The coffee was DE-LISH; Food was tasty too. Favorite Dishes: Nutella Shaken Espresso, Balance Bowl
google avatar

Bianca J.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere! Went during a bachelorette party, indoor DJ, got fun shots, great time. Food was delish. Drinks were a little sweet and "mixer-y" .. would definitely come back again
google avatar

Munah H.

Yelp
I ordered the Lowcountry breakfast sandwich and cinnasticks. The Lowcountry sandwich had housemade breakfast Sausage, egg, cheddar and sausage gravy. Delicious! The cinnasticks were good!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick lunch and thought the experience was ok. The cereal milk cold brew was tasty and not overly sweet if you leave out the whipped cream. I had the gropfather sandwich and the chicken was very dry and greasy. The pesto and hot sauce was a bit of a strange combo as well. Wouldn't recommend it. The turkey club was fine. The sandwiches are big so it could have easily been shared between two people. I did enjoy the patio with outdoor seating and seems like it would have a fun brunch vibe on the weekend. Service was okay - we didn't really didn't get checked in on after we ordered and the food was delivered.

Yelp
A cute little restaurant with ample patio seating (with umbrellas), bar seating, and plenty of seating inside. It is past the Share House - although confusing because the Bodega menu is posted outside of the Share House. I got the Bodega Classic with Bacon and added Spinach. My fiancé got the avocado toast with a fried egg. I was not impressed with the Bodega Classic. The egg ratio was lacking to the amount of spinach and bread. The bacon was curly and kept falling out of the sandwich and it was kind of stale. I LOVE breakfast sandwiches and this was a letdown. My fiancé really enjoyed his avocado toast. The chili oil was a nice touch! I would recommend the avocado toast over the Bodega Classic! The home fries were extremely salty.

Yelp
We love Bodega for a breakfast Sammy and coffee! We love the options of seating indoor/outdoor and a to go option! Convenient garage parking around the block! The menu has so many choices, everything we've had multiple trips here has been amazing. There are GF options for the bread and pancakes which is huge for me! I love being able to get a sandwich again! There is always changing coffee specials which are fun to see what's new each time! I do love their staple Dirty Chai Latte as well!
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
Cute atmosphere both inside and out, you can either grab a drink/bite to go or sit down and be served. Our server was nice, and the food tasty. Mimosas were pretty much champagne with a splash of juice and that's exactly how I like them! They even had vegan sausage which was great in the bodega classic sandwich. You'll probably have to pay to park, but if you're in the area it's an easy and yummy stop!
google avatar

Julia B.

Yelp
I love the coffee bar. It's a quick walk up counter that allows you to get a quick coffee to go! They're quick and friendly. And have a cute area for you to wait for your coffee
google avatar

Lynn D.

Yelp
Food was very good. Service was great. Decor is awesome and the ability to buy "to go" items is a great idea. One complaint...alcohol was very expensive! $25 for a no big deal bottle of chardonnay regardless of the size and an aperol spritz for $12+ is ridiculous. I'll go back for food and drink somewhere else...
google avatar

Yelp
We enjoyed coffee and sandwiches here while visiting Charleston and it did not disappoint at all. Each day we went we were welcomed with smiles and everyone was so nice. The coffee was the best we've ever had anywhere hands down. The cold brew w/ sugar free vanilla and almond milk was almost like a dessert. Sort of thick and milk shake texture. Very good The gropfather was a chicken cutlet sandwich and it was pounded out very thing and fried crispy. The sandwich had a bit of spiciness to it which I wasn't expecting and the pesto balanced it out nicely. Very filling The egg cheese on a kaiser was just as good with american cheese. 10/10

Yelp
This place was a good spot to go to when out with friends because the vibe was fun, but definitely nothing special. I understand that it was Saturday and it was busy but it took 20 minutes for me to get my cocktail which I later found out was just a draft, which is pretty crazy. (I think most of their cocktails are draft) Still overall, pretty fun if you're out with friends and want to stay downtown!

Yelp
What a cute, hidden restaurant! This gem is next to the Children's Museum and between the Music Farm and Charleston Music Hall. There are sandwich board signs that point you to the direction of the entrance in case you're not sure where to go. Our party was a party of 6 so when we came in, we looked around for a table big enough for us. We were immediately greeted by all the colorful artwork on the walls! Someone came by asking us about our party and put two tables together by the entrance (a 4 top and a 2 top). It was cold that day and my seat was with my back to the entrance. There was a tall space heater near the entrance that seems like it was placed there on purpose to help with the cold breeze. I feel like without the space heater there, it would have been much colder by the entrance. The whole vibe of Bodega was comfy, welcoming, and made me think I definitely want to come back! The service was quick and our server was friendly the entire time! Actually, everyone we interacted with was really friendly. The servers were always smiling when they walked by and everyone seemed to be in such a great mood. The food came out and it was delicious! The home fries were PERFECT! I'm a big fan of BLTs and clubs so I love to try those anywhere new I go. I don't like spicy food or the texture of avocado, so I got mine without the chipotle aioli and avocado (sorry, just can't) and my sandwich was great! The portion was really big, too, and I didn't finish mine so I took half the sandwich home (had it for dinner and it was perfect). Definitely will need to come back to Bodega again!
google avatar

Yelp
Sandwiches are so good, especially the breakfast ones! I got the Classic Bodega and it was so good. Their lattes are delicious. Counter order services but they bring it to your table. The outdoor seating is amazing, shady and not bad even on a warmer day with fans.
google avatar

Robyn S.

Yelp
Made our way down to the Children's Museum and had a hungry toddler in tow. I love their totally stacked sandwiches, super easy to order online and food was ready fast! I love the coffee bar but also the full bar on the other side- literally anyone can find something they want here!

Yelp
Bodega is one of my favorite spots for brunch in Charleston! Bodega is a great vibe for brunch hour on a sunny day, offering ample outdoor seating, great music, and a friendly staff. The star of the show, of course, is the sandwiches. From classic deli creations to inventive, signature options, each bite is a revelation of quality ingredients and expert craftsmanship. My personal favorite is the Chopped Cheese, while my boyfriend loves the Gropfather. They also always offer delicious specials so be sure to ask. The menu caters to various tastes, ensuring there's something for everyone - carnivores, vegetarians, and adventurous foodies alike. In a city filled with dining options, Bodega stands out as a must-visit destination for those who appreciate giant mimosas and good food, surrounded by the warmth of the sun and the harmony of good music. Whether you're meeting friends, enjoying a solo lunch, or on a casual date, this spot offers a sublime blend of culinary delight and outdoor bliss. Highly recommended for anyone looking to grab a bite on a nice day!

Yelp
Great vibes, bright welcoming space, attentive servers. Delicious and not boring coffee drinks. The cinni sticks were out of this world - so crunchy and sweet - served wirh a custard. I can't wait to get them again. The image of the sandwich speaks for itself. We live so close to this place we go there often. Just wish they would bring back half priced burgers on Tuesdays.
google avatar

Yelp
We love bodega & sharehouse and make a point to stop in everytime we are in CHS! The best breakfast sandwiches I have found outside of NJ - and they even offer porkroll! (Even if they call it Taylor ham ). The Gropfather is by far the best sandwich we've tried from Bodega. Their iced lattes, orange crushes & espresso martinis are great too!
google avatar

Thuy N.

Yelp
Tucked away from the main shopping street, this place reminds me of an excentric funky shop in Austin. There was hardly anyone seated but the service was attentive. Ordered a latte and a sandwich (godfather). It was basically a chicken parmesan in a ciabatta. The chicken was dry and some more pesto or sauce would have been better. The ciabatta iis a harder type if bread so it made it even harder to swallow. I don't think it would be something that I would seek out but it's a hippie spot for a pick me up from walking
google avatar

Yelp
Spunky little joint with fun atmosphere. There was a dj while we came for lunch on a Saturday - they did require to see ID which was odd for lunch at 1:30. Service was great and our waitress was very sweet. I ordered the Gropfather on a kaiser roll and a side of home fries - very fresh and tasty! Fresh squeezed orange juice was refreshing as well. They have vegan friendly options as well here. Great spot and will definitely come here again!

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Wanted to love this so much. The food was overrated, atmosphere lacked with club like music, service was terrible. It took over an hour for two sandwiches at 11:30 am. Think twice before you fall into this trap.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Stopped in based on reviews and really wish we hadn't - it was fine, but just that and not worth the wait. Visited on a weekday for lunch - it was probably at 50% capacity inside and out, not overly busy. Service was nonexistent - they would drop by every now and then but our water carafe would always be empty. This is a sit down restaurant for sandwiches - I was expecting counter service but here we are. Not necessarily a bad thing, but...the sandwiches took over 30 minutes to prepare? We almost walked out we were in disbelief. This wait plus the lack of any real service was very off-putting. And then the sandwiches ended up being very very average, neither of them I would order again. We went with the chopped cheese which was a chopped up cheeseburger put between a couple pieces of not great bread. The second was the Gropfather - a pounded thin chicken cutlet that I would bet is cooked from frozen, a tiny amount of pesto and nduja that you can't taste, fresh mozzarella was the main flavor component on this sandwich. The potatoes were fried crispy and had little flavor as well. Surely there are better lunch options around

Yelp
I loved the food and the girl who took care of us super nice, I'm going to repeat yes or yes
google avatar

Yelp
Was overcharged. Not trustworthy. The menu price and price on the bill were different, the staff made up a lame excuse, but the bill was not credited. Not worth fighting over. Scammy restaurant. Avoid.
google avatar

Georgia J.

Yelp
We called in an order for pickup on our way to the beach, and it was a perfect move!! They were super busy but the service was still very friendly and attentive. It took about 35 minutes to get our order after we called. The sandwiches were fresh and filling and perfect for a beach day!
google avatar

Kaitlin M.

Yelp
SO GOOD! The gropfather was delicious and the Cinnie sticks were delectable. Unique coffee drinks plus the classics.
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
More casual eat. The coffee was pretty bad so that is why I knocked off a star. The sandwich however was solid and filling! Something I'd come back for!
google avatar

Paula C.

Yelp
Tried this place for lunch. Both sandwiches we tried were super good! The service was also friendly and helpful. The Nutella coffee was good but kind of small for the price with a lot of ice. The vibe was great! Would be cool to come for brunch on a weekend and do their table side mimosas that have for $13.

Yelp
Give me anything from bodega and im a happy person. I will rave to anyone about bodega, always just saying the name is fun. Grab a drink or grab a big sandwich you will not be disappointed. I usually go during the off hours because i have a flexible schedule so ive never have had a hard time getting a table or seating. i also walk from my house so parking isn't an issue for me but there is always street parking if you try hard enough or go to Marian parking garage on king. or the vistors center which is right next door. Talking breakfast, they open early which is amazing for me. i ge their "The cow" fire. Lunch or really any time of day because i have ordered it for breakfast before but their chick flick... is my favorite chicken slad sandwich i the area. i ate that for breakfast on my 21st birthday once.I have opted out before on the berry jam. However im sure its good i just have trust issues with berries and chicken. Grab an expresso martini, you will hank me later. They have so many other flavors too so can you rlly go wrong with a french toast martini? no i honestly dont think you can. People there amazing, always so sweet and helpful even when busy. Cant wait for the coleman location to open.

Myki H.

Yelp
From out of town and wanted a coffee to go. Checked with hostess who directed us inside. Barista helpful and friendly-placed order. Sat down at small table to wait (customers in front of us did the same). Husband got up to get pitcher of water and hostess came over and said we couldn't have it and that she thought we were getting coffee to go. We got up and then she says oh it's ok. No it's not. Lattes lukewarm and had no flavor.
google avatar

Kandace S.

Yelp
The bodega chs was good! They have awesome food & drinks. The service was a little shotty. The people were nice but it took over 20 minutes to be greeted and to order... another 15 for our drinks. Overall, love the atmosphere and the food!!
google avatar

Florence X.

Yelp
I came here on a super busy Sunday! I didn't have to wait long for a spot at all. They had a great DJ, who set the vibe for the restaurant! I think this is a super great spot to hang out on a Sunday afternoon. Got the pastrami dip in the Arthur sandwich. I believe the pastrami dip is seasonal but my goodness everything was so good. I felt like I had two meals and one. They are coffee and tea was also delicious. I've had their espresso martini here on a previous visit and it was just lovely! I've only heard good things about this place. I'm so glad I lived up to my expectations
google avatar

Victoria G.

Yelp
Bodega is a great place to grab lunch downtown. Conveniently next to the Children's Museum and right near the parking garage. Seating is available outside or inside (which has some cool paintings). We really enjoyed our sandwiches and drinks (they gave us a coffee on the house and it was delicious). Get the potatoes, they were so good! We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Sarah-Bradley D.

Yelp
Safe to say we LOVED bodega. The ambiance is so fun with the indoor outdoor set up and the food was just next level good. We started with the frozen espresso martinis that were both fun and yummy. For food we got the gropfather which was the star of the show, I'd go back tomorrow for it. We also did the cow breakfast sandwich which was delish as well. We really loved the homemade Kaiser rolls and how fresh everything was. Our complaint was service hence the 4 stars. Sadly it took us standing up and getting a server after 15 minutes of waiting to be seen. Food took a pretty significant time to come out too. Our whole brunch experience was almost 1:45 minutes. We loved the food so much and hope this was just a fluke experience but will be back.
google avatar

Allison T.

Yelp
This is probably my 3rd trip to Bodega and it never disappoints. Fresh ingredients and a perfect coffee blend keeps me coming back!
google avatar

Daniela Z.

Yelp
Great, fresh sandwich! I do think they're overpriced, but it is what it is downtown. I got the Halpert and appreciated how packed it was and the bread tasted fresh.
google avatar

Josh W.

Yelp
Party of 6 dudes started so sick waitress gave us free shots (visibly hungover). Went downhill fast tho when she didn't tell us about auto grat and we tipped her fuckin %40 in cash all good tho Bloody Mary was good
google avatar

Jon R.

Yelp
The strawberry matcha was the winner and my wife said it was her favorite matcha ever. We went back to get it a second time. The gropfather was ok. It didn't come out like I've seen and it wasn't a big hit. I think maybe it sat for a while. The server at the espresso bar was very good.
google avatar

Shauna F.

Yelp
This may be in the top ten sandwiches I've ever had! The service was great, the vibes were impeccable. There was a DJ this morning playing everyone's faves with a little twist. We will definitely be back!

Madeline T.

Yelp
We had a pretty good time here! It was about 90° outside and we got on the waitlist for "first available" which was 100% our fault because we should have waited for a seat inside. In this heat I'd recommend waiting for inside, because there were two big fans outside that were on some tables and I'm sure it felt great, but because our table was behind the fan it was too hot to be able to enjoy our food. They definitely need more than two fans so staff and can have one as well as all tables. Our experience probably would have been much better if we were inside! I would definitely come back to try inside, or in better weather.
google avatar

Sarah Mackenzie S.

Yelp
The food lives up to the hype of this place. Absolutely amazing. There isn't a bad item on the menu. 100% would go back and try everything one the menu.

Michael Q.

Yelp
As forever downtown "locals", we love when a food gap is filled. Breakfast downtown has always been tricky. Sometimes there's a two hour wait (thanks a lot, brunchers), sometimes restaurants try too hard to be "upscale" and miss the mark, and other times, the food just sucks. We started going to Bodega as soon as they opened at Uptown Social. On weekends, they were a lifesaver. You could tell that Bodega was working out the bugs for something bigger. Alas, we visited them at their new location on Ann Street to check out the space, improvements, and of course, their tasty breakfast sandwiches. At this price point, Bodega is a safe bet. The sandwiches are made fresh (to order) and we appreciate the consistency with their Lowcountry and Classic sandwiches. Thick, dense, flavorful, and begging for ketchup, these breakfast sandwiches are perfect and the fuel you'll need to walk around downtown all day and/or kill that annoying hangover. We were most impressed by the management's customer service attitude and willingness to help us (rare downtown). After waiting for 40+ minutes, the manager found us a table next door and made sure that our order would be delivered to the new table. Because Bodega is new, communication between the different "fronts" was challenging, but the team worked together to make us comfortable. And hey, we appreciate it. Our main feedback would be to expedite to go orders without disrupting the people who want to sit down and "experience" Bodega's fun vibe/culture.
