"Bohemian House, also known as Boho, isn’t for the faint of heart. Literally. If you have heart problems you might want to consult with your doctor before eating here. That’s because Boho is a modern take on Bohemian food, which means food influenced by the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria, which means a lot of meat. Meat like knackwurst and pork schnitzel, and just saying the word schnitzel is a daunting task, let alone eating it all. We will say that the modern take on the food makes it a bit lighter than a traditional Eastern European meal, but not by a lot. Located on the corner of State and Illinois, Boho is entrenched in River North without being as much of a scene as places nearby. We chalk it up to the style of the food, because let’s face it, people wearing fedoras, giant sunglasses, or 37’’ heels aren’t trying to eat beef cheek pierogies or spätzle for dinner. The design is cool, and anything but low key. Boho is full of thick wood tables and ceiling beams, plus a number of bright colors and patterns sprinkled throughout the space. Think German beer hall meets colorful and modern interior design. It’s lively without being real loud, so you can come for food and cocktails but still hear the people next to you. Just make sure those people are comfortable eating Bohemian style food, so maybe leave the wannabe Instagram models at home. Food Rundown Deviled Eggs Not something we’d normally order at a restaurant, but these are pretty good. They are topped with cured salmon, salmon roe, dill, and rye. The salmon flavor is what makes these worth ordering. Hungarian Langos Fried potato bread with a heavy dose of garlic sour cream and aged gouda. We’d recommend only ordering if you have a party of four or more. A piece or two is good, but too much of this stuff and you’ll be down for the count. Salt & Vinegar Chips These homemade chips are delicious and great for picking at as a starter. Dip them in the horseradish-onion dip served with it. Slow Roasted Beets Order these beets if not for the sole purpose to get some veggies. It’s a beautifully plated dish with beets, apples, walnuts, caraway vinaigrette, and molasses. Tastes good too. Bone Marrow & Steak Tartare The steak tartare actually ends up being minimal because it’s piled on top of the marrow bones. Not a bad thing, just think of this more like a bone marrow dish with a steak tartare bonus than the other way around. Pork Schnitzel Sizable piece of pork schnitzel with dill potatoes, bacon, onions, and charred lemon. Straight forward. Roasted Duck Leg Slice roasted duck with grilled kohlrabi, cherries, smoked hazelnuts, and some cabbage. If you’re a duck fan then you’ll be a fan of this. Grilled Chicken Paprikash A classic Hungarian dish, and one that is done very well. We’d order this chicken in a tomato based sauce any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Don’t sleep on the potato dumplings that come with it. King Salmon Excellent salmon. Period. It comes with some squash and sweet corn, but the salmon itself is delicate and tastes great. The one acceptable stray from all the meat. Skirt Steak Skirt steak with grilled broccoli and red wine braised farro. Solid move if you’re in the mood for some standard skirt steak. Brunch The only thing we don’t love at Boho is the brunch. Portions are tiny, it’s a little dead in there, and overall is lacking. Go for dinner instead." - Sam Faye

"Bohemian House, River North. Bohemian culture first emerged in Europe as a way to describe the lifestyles of anti-establishment artists, writers, musicians, and actors living a free spirited, deconstructed lifestyle. It's fitting that a place like Bohemian House has found a home in River North, a neighborhood made famous through its artistic community. Enjoy the restaurant's eclectic decor and carefree essence while sipping on cocktails derived from traditional European recipes. The dinner menu, which is constantly shifting to reflect what's in season, is not one to miss. La vie boheme!"

"BoHo was an acclaimed restaurant that brought Central European cuisine with an American twist into the spotlight in River North. It lasted four years before closing in October 2018; the space is now Flora Fauna." - Ashok Selvam

I think I would love going to this place with a larger group (we were two). The small dishes like various sausages and such would be perfect as small dishes for a group, and the larger plate we got was better for a single entree, but still felt a little like a larger version of smaller plates. That said, the flavors were delicious! The atmosphere was great. The cocktails were super tasty, too, with the highlight being the hot apple cider with rosemary and rum. Would recommend, especially with a group.

Every time I go to Chicago, I make multiple stops at the Bohemian House because their food is absolutely amazing, unique and delicious.  The menu is always changing, but regardless of what you order, you are not going to be disappointed because their dishes feature some of the best German Cuisine. During my most recent visit, I enjoyed the deviled eggs, Hungarian Langos, the Knackwurst and black forest cake.  The deviled eggs were a delightful start as was the Hungarian Langos -- shredded potato mixed with dough, fried and then topped with sour cream and dill.  It was so good that my friend ordered one to go before we left. The knackwurst was a great combination of spicy & sweet and crunchy & soft. The sausage itself was crispy on the outside yet soft and spicy on the inside.  The spiciness was then complimented by the sweet dough around it and by the sweet shredded beets below. Finally, the black forest cake was the perfect way to finish the night!

Very nice environment and decoration. We were there for restaurant week. The food was great and delicious. I m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because first and third courses were very small. We were satisfied anyways, just wanted more of the delicious dessert.

Cool, modern interior. Decent food, loved the chicken paprikash, and pierogi was delicious. Had a good berr selection. Service just average. Felt prices a little high compared to other German restaurants I've visited. Good enough to check out once.

A cozy joint that's super easy to walk right past (which I did, twice). The service is super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They are happy to make easy exclusions to a dish. The back servers keep the table refreshed and water glasses full without you even knowing it's happening. Good cocktails, once you get past the ones that have been ruined by hipster mixologists. The food is delicious. It's also a great compromise -- if you can even call it that -- for when dining out with your father-in-law who loves German food, but thinks it's reached its pinnacle at The Berghoff.

I could give this place 5 stars for the aesthetic alone. The decorations in this restaurant are so beautiful and intricate. The tables aren’t too small and there setup is unique. We went for brunch and split potato pancakes, the flat iron steak and the kielbasa sausage with eggs. Everything was delicious. The service was a little on the slower side considering the place was relatively empty, but it was worth it for the food.

I went to lunch for restaurant week 2018. The service was good. The food was very tasty. I would go back and want to try their dinner.
