"Boichik Bagels in Berkeley is selling matzo bark (matzo covered in house-made caramel, chocolate, almonds, and sea salt), matzo, and horseradish for Passover. Note that they’ll be closed March 27th to April 6th, so make sure to plan ahead, and pre-order for pick up here." - julia chen 1
"We don’t like relying on superlatives to convey love, but we’ll make an exception: this tiny takeout-only bagel shop on College Avenue makes the best bagels in the Bay. They’re New York-style, plump and chewy, with a perfect crunchy bottom. The usual bagel suspects are here, like poppy, garlic, and cinnamon raisin, and they nail the more interesting hybrids—earthy pumperthingel (pumpernickel and everything), and the salty-sweet eggything. While it’s never a bad move to go for the well-stuffed sandwich filled with lox and vegetables, we prefer things simple. The order: untoasted everything with fluffy chive cream cheese all the way." - julia chen 1, lani conway
"“I know what you’re thinking. Survivor is still on? Yes, the reality competition series just finished its 40th season, and it’s one of the best shows on TV. Nothing is more fascinating than watching strangers battle for $1 million through a glorious clusterf*ck of social, strategic, and physical gameplay - you’ve got iconic blindsides, 11-hour immunity challenges, and Jeff Probst in khakis yelling “Come on in, guys!” every episode, without fail. There’s no way to be a casual fan of Survivor - you either have no idea it exists, or watching it religiously is your most prominent personality trait. Boichik Bagels has a similar cult following (which I’m also a part of). In pre-quarantine times, people lined up on College Ave. at 7am to snag a dozen of their New York-style bagels, which usually sold out within hours. Now, you can pre-order online for pick-up. And since Survivor’s new season just wrapped, you can start your thorough rewatch of seasons 16, 20, or 28 (the best ones) over an everything bagel, lox, and scallion schmear.” -JC" - julia chen 1, lani conway
"Boichik Bagels helped usher in a new era in Bay Area — nay, West Coast — bagels. Emily Winston is the mastermind behind Boichik Bagels, which has garnered plenty of press for bagels based on her memories of H&H in New York. Boichik has spread quickly throughout the Bay Area with good reason, and it’s a good first stop for your tour of Bay Area bagels if you haven’t already been. Try the Eggything Bagel, an eggy bagel with everything spice, and the hatch chile cream cheese." - Dianne de Guzman
"The flagship location of Boichik Bagels on Sixth Street in Berkeley also hosts mahjong games, led by local mahjong instructor and author Toby Salk. Emily Winston of Boichik Bagels has her own familial and cultural connection to mahjong and found the idea of hosting a regular mahjong gathering at her Berkeley bagel factory appealing." - Dianne de Guzman
