Breathless in La Paz, the World's Highest Capital City

"Popular Cocina Boliviana, which I find above the inner patio of a decaying old house on Calle Murillo, is a lunch-only joint with a set menu that sparkles with creativity. Sitting at a bench by the open kitchen, I watch as half a dozen chefs—some of them Gustu alumni—turn out vividly colored stews, soups, and grilled fish dishes, plus native potatoes and legumes, decorated with flowers and herbs for a packed crowd. The food tastes delightful. The atmosphere is youthful and hypersocial. The price is almost embarrassingly bargain-basement."

Lives up to the hype!! We came here for my birthday lunch in La Paz and it was such a good experience. The staff really take the time to explain everything in detail and every dish was so well presented and tasty. We got the wine pairing and thought it was all really good value for money. My only feedback is the waiter who gave us the dessert I told him mine was without the peanut ice cream because I have an allergy and he said it didn't have peanuts and put it down, when I checked with our other waiter before eating it was the peanut sorbet which he quickly changed!! Go early to avoid not getting a table, we arrived at 11:30 for 12pm sitting and had no issues, others who arrived later also got in but aim for 20-30 mins ahead maybe.

This was a 10/10 experience! We rocked up early to get in line as we were so excited to try this place and am happy to say our expectations were meet and more. The initial Service by Chelo was fast, fun, engaging and got us excited to try all the dishes. Then Richy came in with each meal going over the wine pearing in a knowledgeable and fun way. Then the food... we thought because it was fine dining it would be small dishes but no these were so filling and delicious. The presentation to each dish was immaculate blowing us away each time a plate was served. The atmosphere was vibrant and you could see everyone was enjoying their meals. A great concept that has been executed perfectly. On top of this, the price was insanely cheap for what you get, we will be back! 3 dishes each, each paired with a new wine, and leaving extremely full for only 269 BOB (AUD $56 - USD $38.70)

Arrived at 11:45 and there were already 20 people waiting. The restaurant has 17 tables so the first 30 people are likely to get a table. The entree and desert was the best. The starters were ok. But really good value for 89 per person

I highly recommend this restaurant as it was one of our best dining experiences in La Paz. For just 89 BOB, you get a full course menu including an entrée, main dish, dessert, and drinks—a fantastic deal for the quality offered. The meal began with a delicious soup accompanied by complimentary bread and sauce, both of which were excellent. The juices were incredible, and we even asked for a second maracuyá juice because it was so good. The main dish was simply exquisite, perfectly balanced in flavor and presentation. Finally, the dessert was amazing, and we had the chance to watch part of its preparation, as we were seated near the chefs. And of course with every dish you have the full explanation in english or spanish depending on your preference! Given the restaurant’s popularity and limited opening hours (12:00 PM to 2:30 PM), I strongly recommend arriving 30 minutes before opening to secure a spot. The atmosphere is bustling and fast-paced, so it’s not the place to linger over a meal. However, you can eat at your own pace—the service is incredibly efficient, with courses arriving almost immediately after you finish the previous one. At the end, the staff gently hints that it’s time to leave to make space for others, which is completely understandable given the high demand and reputation of the restaurant. 5/5 stars – A must-visit dining experience in La Paz!

Such fine food for such a low price. Very good service and good mood. I would just recommend getting there early, they don’t take reservations and the line can get quite long, even half an hour before the opening.

Wow wow wow! It was worth the hour wait for a chance to have lunch here. What a vibe with incredible service, and if you have the chance to sit at the bar, take it so you can see the kitchen in action. Local ingredients and dishes served in a contemporary style. There is a set menu of entree, main and dessert with options across all three

Quite difficult to get in! They open at 12, so I came at 12 and there's a long line. I came back at 3:10 and the food was gone. The meal was quite an experience, though a little bit on the expensive side compared to the rest of the lunch sets in La Paz. I paid 139 Bolivianos for the 3 course meal, with wine samplers (one wine per course) and one juice. The food explodes with flavor though the main was a bit too sour for me, and the dessert not sweet though. This is a place I would recommend to try once.

Can't believe we actually found this restaurant in La Paz. Food is absolutely delicious and intricately plated. You can see the kitchen's efficiency and service is exceptional !! Good to be there early to avoid a wait, we were there before the opening hours and there already is a queue !!
