"Beyond music lovers, the venues’ appeal eventually spread and they began popping up in New York and LA. DMK Restaurants sought to bring a listening room to Chicago and secured a downtown space inside the historic Railway Exchange Building, which was built in 1904 and designed by fabled urban planner Daniel Burnham. In late-June, DMK unveiled the first phase of a multi-pronged project. The Exchange’s Listening Room is a 50-seat restaurant with food from Brian Huston, a chef who earned a James Beard Foundation Award nomination in 2015 for his work at the since-shuttered Boltwood in suburban Evanston." - Ashok Selvam

"Boltwood, an acclaimed suburban restaurant opened by the inaugural chef de cuisine at the Publican, has closed its doors in Evanston. Chef Brian Huston left One Off Hospitality Group and Fulton Market in 2014 to open his own restaurant and quickly wowed the critics. Huston’s business partner confirmed the news. Prieto wouldn’t elaborate but said they decided not to renew their lease at 804 Davis Street in Evanston. Huston is an Evanston native. Boltwood took over the spot occupied by LuLu’s Dim Sum and Then Sum, the well-liked Chinese restaurant. LuLu’s has since reopened in a new location." - Ashok Selvam

"The chef of Boltwood in Evanston used to work at The Publican, and this spot focuses on seasonal dishes, like roasted corn with shrimp, pate, and marmalade. The menu changes regularly, but thankfully they always have the housemade sourdough, which is good enough to warrant a trip here on its own. Boltwood is also family-friendly (they have a separate kids’ menu) and great for a casual lunch or dinner." - Adrian Kane

Larger than exterior appearance. Very warmly greeted at the door. Waitress was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We started with bangers and the winter squash. Both wonderful. For dinner octopus and hanger steak. Neither could have been cooked more perfectly. Finished with coffee and German chocolate cake. The darker chocolate and toasted coconut top made it the best I ever had. Super enjoyable evening!

Great brunch place. The service is very nice and helpful. I've been there a couple of times and never had an issue. They have a good variety of dishes. And I love the fact they have coffeine free tea. Great atmosphere, with peaceful design.

Wonderfully pleasant and competent FOH and bartending staff, but the kitchen seems to be having trouble. Our half dozen oysters took 30 min to get to the table on a quiet Wednesday night, which should probably not be a thing. When a table of 4 ordered entrees, my perch came 10 minutes before the other 3, and was cool on the edges even right when it got to the table. If I wasn't paying $17 for some fish and Brussels sprouts it would have been ok. On top of that it was seriously oversalted, and the fried coating was sliding off easily (I imagine it was sitting waiting to go out and got soggy along the way) This could have easily been an amazing meal with some better trained/organized kitchen staff it seems

Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Came here for a business dinner with some colleagues after a long week and the food was exceptional. Considering we’d been eating relative trash for most of the week, this was an extremely welcome change. Food was perfectly balanced, elegantly presented and generously sized. Would personally recommend the crispy potatoes, and the mussels were delightful. A nice change from the traditional cream of white wine sauce. 10/10 would recommend to any fan of food.

It was just okay. The chicken sandwich was dry but the bread was good. The potatoes were excellent. My husband's steak was okay. Would not order that steak again really wanted something tender. The mixed salad was very flavorful. The service was very good.

Great food and cool environment. This place has a small but awesome menu. 5 of us went so we were able to try a good portion of the menu. Everything we had was very good. The food took a while to get to us, but it was a busy night and the kitchen staff seemed small. The great food was worth the wait time.

For a quick post workday cocktail + dinner this is a great spot. Very fresh, artfully prepared entrees that lean to the farm-fresh side. Very clean eaters will love this spot. Great bar service. They know how to make every drink. My partner was underwhelmed with the fatty pork chop entrée.

Great redesigned space...same great food and service. I really appreciate how kid-friendly this place is...they have a kids' menu with several good options. When I walked in with my five year old for lunch today, the server and the host did not even blink. Nor were they cautiously friendly. Also, they were not overly-friendly to my son, as at some establishments. The staff acted totally NORMAL and we had a nice child- and adult-friendly lunch that we both enjoyed!
