Bomb Bomb Bar in South Philly Is Pure Italian American Nostalgia | Eater Philly

"There’s a very specific nostalgia here for me, not just because the same spot has been serving dinner since 1951 in a building that rival taproom owners bombed twice in 1936, but because chef Joey Baldino’s resurrection of the infamous South Philly dive feels like the intimate, red-tablecloth seafood restaurant I’d bring family to when they’re in town. The menu is small but hits the favorites, and diners choose between one of six bar seats with a brief a la carte menu or table seating with a $62 prix fixe that requires two seafood entrees and one side. For the table format, the retro clams casino, covered in salty, crunchy breadcrumbs, takes me back, and Mom’s stuffed calamari tastes fresh even under a blanket of tangy tomato sauce and spices; sides can be pasta or veg, with options like black ink spaghetti, greens, or french fries with a house made spicy seasoning. At the bar, some former Bomb Bomb specialties return a la carte—original ribs ($16) and fried mozzarella ($12)—plus kitschy frozen drinks like a sgropinno with limoncello and prosecco ($15). The house cocktails riff on Italian American classics, including a Manhattan Italiano with rye, amaro, and vermouth ($16) and a Pepperoncini Vesper, and if you’re after the bar menu you walk through the same facade that’s existed since the 1930s. Insider tip: the accoutrements aren’t just decoration—order the lobster Francese and the staff will beg you to finish each buttered bay leaf before the plate is cleared." - Annemarie Dooling

Where to Get Smoky, Juicy, and Delicious Barbecue in Philly

"Finding Bomb Bomb is easy: Just look for the bright neon sign in the middle of a residential neighborhood in South Philly. While the red gravy Italian food is as comforting as it gets, barbecue is also in the name for a reason. Saucy ribs (with a house-made bourbon-spiked barbecue sauce) are done "South Philly style," and ordering them with a side of mussels is as natural as matching peanut butter and jelly." - Eater Staff, Caroline Coral

When I heard Bomb Bomb was being purchased by Baldino, my husband and I knew we needed to add it to the lineup of Italian restaurants to frequent in Philly. Upon entry, you’re immediately greeted by checkered dining tables, folks adorned with a big ol’ smiles and plastic crab bibs, a bustling bar and the aroma of delicious Italian food making its way from the kitchen to patrons tables. Bomb Bomb offers uniquely “seafood-centered” southern Italian fare and boy if this is your thing (like it is mine), you’re in for a treat! Something to note, the $62/pp price fixe allows you to order a certain amount of dishes from the dining menu, but don’t just limit yourself to those options! The bar menu has some great heavy hitters you’ll want to give a try! Ordered Items: - Mozzarella en Carrozza (Bar Menu) - Roast Pork Sammy (Bar Menu) - Clams in White Wine Sauce (Dining Menu) - Mom’s Stuffed Calamari (Dining Menu) - Whole Dungeness Crab (Dining Menu + $) - Lobster Francese (Dining Menu) - Carbonara (Dining Menu) - Ice Cream Sundae (Dining Menu + $) For 2 people, (4) entrees + an addition of a Pasta Side are included in the price fixe. Hands down, some of the show stoppers came directly from the bar menu. You can’t go wrong with hot, mouth watering, fried mozzarella thats stringy pull takes you from one end of the dining room to the next. After decimating the mozzarella, the real special bite comes from the steaming roasted pork sandwich served with a side of its very own au jus. Flavorful, juicy just like a warm hug. Some highlights from the dining menu, I just wouldn’t pass up on reordering in the future: the whole Dungeness Crab + Lobster Francese. Although requiring some work, the Dungeness Crab hits it out of the park on flavor + natural butteriness. Ditch the side of melted butter it comes with, you’d be doing a great disservice to yourself for not savoring the crabs delicious Sicilian inspired seasoning. As far as the Lobster Francese goes, this dish stands out as one of the more refined + naturally rich dishes we had this evening. Comprised of some of our most favorite ingredients (butter, capers, decadent lobster) the trifecta pairing of all three of these ingredients rewards your mouth with the most beautiful, delicate symphony of flavors. Too good to pass up, a staple that just can’t be missed. Aside from these showstoppers, the true heart of Bomb Bomb derives directly from those serving table side. Jack our server did not fail us on menu recommendations. Linda, the walking heartbeat of Bomb Bomb… equally as entranced by the menu and prime advocate for Sicilian cuisine, will truly make your dining experience. Linda to Bomb Bomb is Dolores to Palizzi. IYKYK. You can’t have one without the other. Aislinn was the first smile to greet us and the last to bid our farewells. Ensuring our cups were never empty and our bellies always full! Thank you to this wonderful team for an incredible evening - wouldn’t have wished to celebrate my birthday in any other way!

The new Bomb Bomb is absolutely out of this world! Everything was fantastic and the service was friendly without being over bearing. We had the shrimp oreganato, clams casino, muscles fra diablo, & stuffed calamari (perfection!!), the carbonara pasta, grilled broccoli, and the sundae! Nothing was a miss! We'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu. The drinks were fab too!! 5 stars!

The food, service & ambiance are perfect. The staff are friendly, attentive and make all the right recommendations. My family lived across the street from this place early in my life before we moved a block away in the other direction. There’s a photo of 4 year old me on the stoop with Bomb Bomb in the background. I am so glad to see this place end up in the hands of people who are making it a special place with delicious, thoughtfully prepared food and keeping a South Philly legend alive and well. I’ve been a few times for the delightful porchetta sandwich (available at the bar only) that comes with a cup of jus, optional broccoli rabe mixed in and a sautéed long hot on the side. But the all seafood pre fixe menu is a true banger. Plus, the wine selection is perfectly concise, containing Italian classics and zero pretentiousness. The server talked us in to the sundae, which was the perfect ending to a light yet filling meal.

The new Bomb Bombs has a chef that prepares the food with love and seasoning that makes u quench for bigger portions. The crab cakes & stuffed calamari are the best I ever had and the ice cream sundae is the perfect dessert to end a delicious meal.
