Best Indian Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"Now in Highland, Bombay to Kathmandu serves great Indian and Nepalese dishes. Momos, kormas, and thalis, plus some fusion like french fry chaat with chutney, yogurt, and chickpeas, can all be seen served around its dining room along with the signature dish: curry pizzas. Chicken makhani, paneer and chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, and lamb vindaloo all top crispy pie crusts for a spiced-up slice of pizza. While there’s plenty of room inside, why not order a curry pizza to go or delivered by Uber Eats or Doordash to shake up your pizza delivery routine?" - Deven Wilson

The Best Buffets & AYCE Restaurants In Austin

"Bombay To Kathmandu is located in a fairly empty strip mall next to an old movie theater in Highland, and it’s a decent option for Indian and Nepali food in the area. In the evenings, you’ll need to order off the menu (get the momos and house-special curries), but on the weekdays you’ll have access to the lunch buffet featuring about a dozen different curries, grilled meats, and sides. There’s even a self-serve chai dispenser if you need to caffeinate before going back to work." - nicolai mccrary

Picked up take-out food here for a party. All of the portions were generous and quite tasty. There was a wide variety in the flavors and different sauces. They were accommodating for gluten-free items. The host included desserts in our order on the house. The star of the show was surprisingly the pizza. It didn't seem like it would as good as it was, but it was full of flavor and quite spicy. The dough could use some work.

My husband and I enjoyed a delicious meal here this evening. The service was friendly and fast, and the food is delicious! I got the vegetable samosas- so good! And the tika masala paneer was excellent. My husband got Napali thaila veg and really liked the variety of food he received. We also got some naan and finished the meal with the mango cheesecake. We could not eat it all so will have a good lunch tomorrow. We will return next time we are in Austin!

We happened to try at this restaurant for the viral momos. The chilli momos were incredible. It was like a combo of paneer 65 and momos.. perfectly cooked and spiced to perfection. Tried the Nepali thukpa soup which was very tasty.. and Thali. The staff was very friendly and sweet.

Good food and good service, serving quantity was medium. AC had some issues, so its temperature was not maintained

Google
While searching for a good place that serves Nepali food we came across this hidden gem. Looking at its name we were kind of skeptical that the taste will resonate more with Indian pallet. Though to our surprise this was one of the best Nepali food place I have ever been in the USA. We ordered Veg thali, Chicken thali, chicken chowmein, chicken momo, Veg thukpa, tandoori chicken and gulab jamun. We genuinely didn’t find anything bad to list it out. They all tasted so good and so homelike. Very simple taste but yummy. The servers were excellent too. They were kind and courteous. They were so sweet that they gave us complimentary Chana masala and two iced tea. Definitely recommend this place to every one of you out there looking to try simple and proper Nepali cuisine; do give this place a try. You won’t regret it for sure. Food: 5/5 Ambience: 4.5/5 Service : 5/5

Google
Our fave restaurant in Austin. So divine every and any time you visit. Service with a smile, and heavenly lamb korma.

Google
My husband and I went to eat here last night. We ordered the lamb vindaloo curry pizza and salmon curry. Both were absolutely incredible! We were able to order the salmon curry as spicy as we wanted it and it was spiced just right! The owner was friendly and very helpful. He explained each dish to us and talked to us about his native country, Nepal. Overall, it was a wonderful meal with amazing leftovers. Conversation was pleasant and fun! We will definitely be back next time we are in Austin! Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Got take out and overordered but there are zero regrets. Everything was again, made to perfection. Absolutely delicious and flavorful.

Yelp
Met a friend here for an early dinner and I was pleasantly surprised by all the delicious things I ate! We shared veggie samosas, chicken biryani and Chicken Jhol Momo. The samosas were perfectly crispy on the outside and the filling was well seasoned. The accompanying sauces were a highlight! I thought the biryani was good but I really enjoyed the momo. It was new dish for me and I love a good dumpling and these were good. The chicken filling was flavorful as well as the korma-type sauce it was in. We were there until 7 p.m. and it was empty in the restaurant on a Thursday. But there were a few people picking up to-go here and there. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
"Sorry, no lunch buffet." "Well, then you might consider taking down the LARGE BANNER out front that reads LUNCH BUFFET." He smiled, and did not disagree. But I got the feeling it's not gonna happen.

Yelp
Outstanding food: 5 stars+!!!This restaurant is located where Taj Palace used to be. Everything we ordered was excellent. There was no buffet; but, what we paid for two people getting everything we wanted, was less than what we would have paid for two buffets. The shareable portions are substantial. Folks like to think of buffets as lots of "free food"; but, buffets can result in so much wasted food. We need to be more conscious of food waste--especially nowadays. We went early. There was no one there; there were some pickups of to go orders. Please try this great restaurant: no buffet; but, excellent, excellent food cooked fresh with lovely presentation. I'm sure you will find it more budget friendly than you imagined. The ambience is very nice, the service was outstanding! Dipesh was our server. He gave us the best service--beyond our expectations. He was very attentive and personable. This would be a great date night place or a place for a group meal or a good celebration spot. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Pretty impressed by the Menu we decided to try this place for lunch. It's an Indian-Nepali place with a Bar and servers Pizza as well. They offered variety of items - Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Tandoori Clay Oven Specials, Chicken, Lamb, Goat, Vegetarian, Biryani and Seafood Specialties, Vegan options, Indian breads, Nepali House Specialties and many more. Great ambiance about this place. Well decorated, amplifying the Indian-Nepali culture through their interior design. Well thought and nicely done. We decided to try out the Nepali Non-Veg Thalis - one with Goat and other with Chicken. Thali came with basmati rice, naan, dal tadka, nepali achar and mango chutney. Loved the food. The food was spicy and delicious. The Naan that served with the Thali was very soft, a perfect combination with the Goat/Chicken curry. Their menu is really promising. Thali gave us a glimpse of what they can offer. Service was really great. Staffs were so friendly and always around to help us. Enjoyed their hospitality and food. A recommended place!

Yelp
LOVE this place!! Food is delicious (come for the buffet on Sundays). The people are so friendly. Plenty of easy parking and it's beautiful inside. We go once a week. They of tons of vegetarian options also!

Yelp
Cheese naan bread is as good as it sounds. Chicken biriyani was so delish. Music and the vibe of the place were also on point.

Yelp
Very cute little restaurant with amazing Indian food. Service was quick and so polite. I took a friend here because she needed pescatarian options and loves spicy food. When I say I could eat the chicken coco korma every day of my life, I mean it! My only regret is not snapping a photo before I decided to dig in. I will be back, they have curry pizza (so curious) and a lunch buffet.

Texas T.

Yelp
They just started having lunch buffet this month per their door sign so I had to try it and it did not disappoint! The buffet food was fresh, warm, authentic and had a lovely assortments of veggie, chicken, rice dishes. There were 2 types of naan to choose from. 3 different sauces, and 2 dessert choices. Lentil soup was also available. Spice level was mostly mild. I believe I only had 2 dishes slightly medium spice level. The buffet had a lot to choose from...I think I counted 13 food options. Anyways, I'm so glad to see lunch buffet back at this establishment as I haven't had any since the prior place closed a few years ago. So so good!

Sunny D.

Yelp
Good lunch buffet! All lamb dishes were very tender, and they have a lamb kebab which is their take on lamb meatballs. Chicken could've been more tender - so I actually preferred the paneer tikka masala over the chicken. You must end your meal with a cup of their masala chai! The ambience is quite nice and quaint, and the people working there were polite and attentive.

Yelp
Great service, reasonable prices and yummy food. I've gone twice with groups and had a fantastic time. This is one of Austin's best kept secrets. Try the pizza!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was very good. Food was average. Ambiance was okay...a bit run down. Would suggest takeout.
google avatar

Steven L.

Yelp
I've ordered here to-go a couple of times and both have been great! On first impression, I wouldn't think a indian restaurant/bar/pizza combination would provide solid food (usually you gotta focus on one thing you're good at), but I was totally wrong with this one. I didn't get any pictures, but I've ordered the salmon tikka, palak paneer, vegetable biryani, and even tried their saag paneer pizza. No complaints, everything was delicious. I especially liked their salmon tikka masala. Oftentimes salmon in this format ends up dry and overcooked, but I found the salmon to be still very juicy, but cooked all the way through. This might just be my new favorite Indian spot (at least for takeout)!

Yelp
Wow. Best Indian food in Austin. I can say that living in England spoiled me...all the Indian food in Austin is just average--but here we had great, full flavor in our curries (butter chicken and spinach something w cheese) with garlic naan and the ambiance / vibe was really on point too, music and all. We tried a rice pudding for dessert which really ended things nicely. Service was stellar and so friendly. We'll be back again and again.
google avatar

Erica N.

Yelp
Skip the samosas IMHO. Too thick and oily. But my delivery came super fast and hot! Tandori Chicken is spicy and good. Happy it came with veggies and it's a good healthy portion.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
As much as I want to rave about this place, it just didn't quite do it for me. First off, service is really, really slow and you need to ask for everything twice. Secondly, even though Nepali food is supposed to be tart, the chicken jhol momo was so tart that I couldn't really enjoy the soup and ate only the momo. My friend said her Vegetarian chow mein was "okay" but the curries and chai were great. We got a bunch of naan but they were also super brown and somewhat crispy, like they had been cooked too long. The food is obviously authentic and I just want to assume they were having a bit of a rough time because it was Christmas Day so I'm giving this 3 stars and will go again on a regular day to see if I have a different experience.

Keaton N.

Yelp
The lamb curry is awesome! Great service and very consistent as well. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Perhaps stick to their pizza or Nepalese menu. I ordered the chicken makhani (butter chicken) and it was just too sweet even with medium spice. Plus the chicken had allot of cartilage in texture so not nice to eat. The garlic nan was way more doughy like a bread roll than unleavened bread which to me was a Debbie downer as I was expecting my nan to be cooked in a tandoor and be flat and kind of crispy due to being cooked in a tandoor. Maybe their customers prefer a doughy nan and sweet curries? I miss Taj Mahal since their nan was not mid. I had leftovers but will probably just trash them. What's weird is the nan in the pictures look very different than what I received to go; maybe the cook is different? I do recall them having better food when they used to be on Lamar. So something has changed.

Yelp
The food is one of the best South Asian food in all of Austin. Flavorful, budget friendly & appeals to your senses and soul. The service was exceptional Ambience was very south Asian and I loved dining here --Red Owner, RED-DRIP 4808185748 Here's my business card https://blinq.me/vUcTPIjkFDVDtm6KfsG3

Yelp
The curry pizza is surprisingly new and different, and delicious. Solid, tasty Indian food. Friendly, appreciative service, too.
google avatar

Ellen F.

Yelp
This is a great spot, wonderful blend of spices in their "house lamb curry." Also I appreciate very much that they are open until 10pm most days. I sometimes work late and this is a perfect way to end a long day. :)
google avatar

Leigh P.

Yelp
Ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala (medium spice), Garlic Naan, and Vegetable Samosa. In my picture, there is another later of garlic naan, so you get plenty! The Tikka Masala was SO good and definitely hit the spot because I was craving curry. I got it in Medium spice and it was barely a tingle (which is fine because I was worried it'd be too spicy). I never had samosa before and personally was not a fan. I can see many others liking it but wasn't for me. Food came very quickly and piping hot. I'll have to try the Cheese Naan based on other reviews!
google avatar

Debbie L.

Yelp
Tikka Masala is so sweet and yummy!!! Spice level is not consistent at all samosas are delicious with the spice powder on top!! Samosa sauce is inconsistent as well..
google avatar

Gabi D.

Yelp
OMG! Talk about some AMAZING curry. This is one of the only two Indian restaurants in Austin that I will eat at for one specific reason: there is not one thing that grinds my gears more than a thin, watery masala. I love a thick, rich curry, stuffed to the brim with paneer and vegetables and this place does NOT disappoint. I've gotten takeout several times from Bombay to Kathmandu and it just keeps getting better. Every single thing, from the rice to the lassis to the pakoras are seasoned to perfection. And like I said, the curry is thick and buttery (I usually get the tikka masala). Another great thing - the samosas are HUGE. Literally some of the biggest, most delicious samosas I've ever had. If you're new to Indian food or you're looking for a reliable spot in austin - this IS the place!

Aditi G.

Yelp
Ordered delivery via Uber eats. Overall, the food was pretty underwhelming The paneer tikka pizza was very one dimensional (cheese and paneer). Versus the typical bell peppers, onions, etc for a true tikka type taste. It was also missing the promised green onion/ciliantro The chowmein was very unlike your usual street chowmein. It was more like curry noodles (slightly thicker noodles, tossed in some type of a curry sauce, cilantro etc). Food was still edible; just not what you would expect or want from Indo Chinese/Tikka pizza.
google avatar

Shiidon H.

Yelp
We decided to try this restaurant and were very pleased. I had the house special lamb curry. It was cooked well. There was plenty of rice and enough food to take home and enjoy again. The meat was tender and good quality. The atmosphere was pleasant and the service was excellent. I will come back again.

Rui D.

Yelp
First time visiting and I had a few questions on the dishes seeing a lack of reviews on items I wanted to eat: -Paneer Pizza: was described as just a cheese pizza with paneer -Saag Paneer: was described as just Saag on the pizza -Gobi Manchurian: waiter was not sure if this was the crispy gobi or not (in his defense, he was new) I ended up ordering the Nepali Veg Thali - Hot and it was great! You get an entire naan, white rice, mango pickle, a small salad (sliced cucumber and carrot), two main curries, and daal. The daal was very tasty and had a kick to it, the other two vegetables were tasty as well. Naan was soft, and the rice, mango pickle, and small salad are on par to what you'd expect. Overall, happy with my decision of entree.
google avatar

Kristy W.

Yelp
I used to order from a different location before the pandemic and really liked it. When I saw this location on Uber Eats, I was happy to try it. I ordered the vegetarian korma + paneer. The sauce was really smooth, seasonings were perfectly balanced and cooked. I also ordered tandoori chicken (with low expectations tbh, I've had a lot of yesterday's reheated chicken from other places before). The chicken was flavorful and really moist. It came with rice and seasoned onions and peppers (not spicy, thankfully for me). The only thing I didn't like was the raita. It was a little sweet (I think carrots were in it?) and it was really watery. I'm looking forward to going to going inside to eat next time!

Nisa B.

Yelp
I can't speak for the ambiance or the staff, I've only ever ordered from them on Uber Eats and I always get the Paneer Tikka Masala Pizza and it is sooo good. I would definitely recommend it.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
The chicken tikka masala is amazing!! I appreciate that they did not make it spicy, the cheese naan is fabulous! We also loved the butter chicken and the garlic naan! We grabbed a to go order it was made fast , stayed hot until we got home...the staff was friendly, the dining room was clean and they let us use the restroom even though the restaurant was closed for dining during to go only hours,
google avatar

Jan K.

Yelp
Nobody greeted us, the hostess was blasting music on her AirPods the whole time she interacted with us, the waiter seemed bothered having to serve us, the food took forever to arrive even though the restaurant was empty. However, the food was delicious, the presentation good, and the price is right. We'll come back but hoping their customer service and speed will improve.
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
You know when you have a craving for Indian food? You know what you want and hope the local Indian food place has it. This time they did! The Aloo Gobi was great, the Pioneer was not steller. But maybe they were having an off day. In the end, it was convenient, they had what I was craving and I was in and out with my order!
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
I don't have to go to do a review! I went to the N Lamar location many times. I was upset when I saw that it was closed but sooo relieved to see it relocated! Bummer my previous review is no longer available - if all they did was update the listing, I would expect my review to still be accessible. I was never disappointed. I hope all that has changed is the location.
google avatar

Alicia H.

Yelp
The food here always so delicious. I have never ordered anything that I didn't love. So grateful to have this place in my neighborhood.

Ana P.

Yelp
I like it. The butter chicken masala was very tasty and their cheese rosemary naan is delicious. The service was really good.
google avatar

Dhanya T.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place one day while my parents were visiting. The Indian food was just okay but we got the saag paneer pizza and loved it! You're able to adjust the spice level - we got medium. So good. A true guilty pleasure !

natasha m.

Yelp
I was really excited to try their Indian pizza and ordered the two paneer options and the chicken tikka for delivery. The pizza toppings and sauce had pretty good flavor. Definitely recommend medium spice over mild. The crust wasn't very good, though. It didn't taste like homemade pizza crust and it was undercooked. I also wish they gave a chutney as a dipping sauce for crust, like other Indian pizza places. Overall an average meal.
google avatar

Lee-el B.

Yelp
We went at 3pm and the place should be packed! There were two other tables dining when we arrived and we were quickly greeted and seated. We ordered the chicken makhani pizza (delicious), the salmon tikka masala (delicious), and the chicken vindaloo (also delicious). That and the garlic naan (you guessed it, delicious) made for a surprisingly plentiful meal that we shared family style. The staff took great care of us and I look forward to returning!
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
The atmosphere is comfortable. The food is so incredibly good. This has to be some of the best Indian/Nepali food I have ever had. The portions are huge, so leftovers can be had. The staff are kind and not pushy or too intrusive while you dine. Sadly, I don't live near here but I will eat here when I travel to/through Austin.
google avatar

Jack S.

Yelp
Love this place! Great service and delicious butter chicken & Palak paneer. Personally not as big of a fan of the pizzas, but it seems other people love them.
google avatar

Alejandro D.

Yelp
Convenient, and centrally located Indian food. Austin is not really known for Indian food (especially south of 183) unfortunately, but this place hits the craving. Solid Indian classics and good service. Nothing mind blown, but you'll enjoy yourself. Looks like they used to be on Rundberg/Lamar are and now moved more centrally, which I'm pretty happy about.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Before eating here my favorite Indian spot to order from was biryani and co. That spot is still great, but Bombay to Kathmandu just moved right down the street from me so we o it tonight. Overall it was exceptional. I usually order sag paneer so I got the palak paneer and it was great! Spice was right and hands down the quickest we've ever ordered from a place and been able to pick up. I usually don't leave any reviews but I need this place to stay in the area.
google avatar

Courtney M.

Yelp
Phenomenal food!! Definitely a language barrier but the staff is so kind and try to communicate and make sure you're pleased and enjoying your meal! So I'd say great service, and do NOT forget to order samosas!!
google avatar

Frank L.

Yelp
Best South Asian food I've had in Austin! I had two dishes delivered, and they both came hot, both in temperature and spice, but that is exactly what I'd hoped for. Paneer was perfect texture, firm on the outside but soft on the inside, and the chicken in the butter chicken came in delicious, large pieces. Can't wait to eat this food again.
google avatar

Madira M.

Yelp
Great place. Delicious food. Regular Indian food that was all great plus some fun Nepali dishes. Good service. I definitely want to come back and try their buffet.

Roberto V.

Yelp
Owner is extremely Rude and Has No Knowledge Regarding ADA Requirements for Service Animals. He told me and Family that we could not come in with our small Service Dog.... Tried to explain ADA Rules established by the Department of Justice.. his response was.... " I do not care. I am the owner and I make my rules in my restaurant."
google avatar

Fay D.

Yelp
Excellent food , lovely flavors and good service. Portions very generous too! Obviously a lot of locals eat here too ,
google avatar

Derek M.

Yelp
This place is awesome. I've ordered from them three times now and it's all been great. Curry is on spot and the Vendaloo is awesome. The Nan is a lil pricey, but take it to the garlic level
google avatar

Cyrus T.

Yelp
Ordered 5 different entrees, a couple of apps, soup, some naan, and a side of raita delivered...they forgot the naan and we had it removed from our check by the delivery app company. The entrees were mixed...some had good flavor but were under salted. The soup was way too salty. The fried veggie appetizer was so hard as to be inedible. We threw it way. The raita was inexplicably very sweet. This is supposed to be a salty/sour yogurt. After a small bite we threw it away. After sampling all of the entrees I got mildly sick to my stomach. I thought perhaps it was a sandwich I had for lunch, but the next night after eating the leftovers I got sick again. I think it was the lamb saag but can't be sure. Super disappointing and won't be going back.
