My co-workers had been telling me about Bombo for a while so I finally decided to take my girlfriend there. First of all, it's below the rooftop of EP&LP, which has some of my favorite cocktails in LA, on one of the vibiest, if not THE most vibiest, rooftops in LA. We came a little earlier to get a drink up there (if you like GIN the PURPLE RAIN is my favorite), but I got to say we didn't have to even get a drink... because if the rooftop drinks are 'good,' BOMBO's drinks are STELLAR. I got the 'Dreaming of You', which I had no clue what the liquor was (the bartender filled me in, very knowledgeable, but I can't say I remember now-- it was Sotol?) but I love egg whites in a drink. It was delicious.
Sidenote: Most, if not all of the drinks in Bombo, I hadn't seen on a menu in LA before- they had one that was tequila reposado with apple juice??? And the apple is fresh squeezed??? Yes please!
Now let's get to the food.... Leading the kitchen is Samantha Quintero who appeared on Chopped and won the Chopped Casino Royale Battles! ... Okay, you've peaked my interest...
We were going to get some grilled corn for our appetizer, but our server recommended that if we were thinking of a corn dish that we might like the chef's favorite: The ELOTE ASADO. So we got that.
GOOD LORD it was incredible! It comes with a corn puree for dipping that I am still dreaming about.
For dinner we went with the SEABASS and we had heard that Chef's favorite tacos were the DUCK CARNITAS (I mean after that elote asado I pretty much trust this chef with my life). I had never heard of duck carnitas, I don't think I've even ever seen that offered, aka: it was a must!
Even with the sauces on the side (my girlfriend is a picky eater) it was still amazing. Great flavor, perfectly cooked, and kept me wanting more.
Oh my gosh, if I had more time, more room in my stomach, and one less drink (which was impossible because I needed to try more after the first one was so good), I would have tried every single taco.
A wonderful experience all around: knowledgeable staff (if Mitchell is your server, you are in good hands), delicious original drinks, and food that makes you want to come back, and I WILL!
