"For 90 years, Bommarito’s bakery in St. Clair Shores has been serving up Italian sandwiches, cannolis, cookies, and Sicilian-style pizza. The Italian sub isn’t only one of the best sandwiches in the metro area, it can be had for just $8.99. The Italian bread gets baked in-house and it’s some of the very best around — seeded, nutty, substantial, yet soft and tender." - Danny Palumbo, Serena Maria Daniels

Bommarito is awesome! They have great pizza and great pastries. I labeled it four stars instead of five because of the sauce. I believe they needed more sauce. Everything else seemed to be great. I'm glad they are heavy on the toppings. You definitely get the right amount of toppings when you come here. That pizza was cooked the right amount and the staff was friendly! I will definitely go back.

I ordered 4 Italian 6 foot and a turkey 6 foot for a Super Bowl shindig and you did not disappoint! I was able to feed 80 people twice and still have enough for a small army they are that big! Thanks a bunch!!

May, 2025 Found myself back in the area at lunchtime so I figured I'd give them another opportunity. Really is just a wine store/bakery/pizza place. There is nowhere inside to eat. The restroom aren't available. Strictly carry-out only. So I'm not eating lunch here, my car is not a dining room. But I decided to pick up a couple of donuts for Saturday breakfast so I can have some idea if the food is that good. With at least four people working, the service was surprisingly slow. Get your number, wait several minutes. One older woman appeared to be helping a customer but just sort of wandered around the bakery case looking at things. Guess she doesn't know what's inside it. Both she and the woman wrapping up pizza slices & sandwiches to-go were bare-handed. From food to money to boxes and countertops and right back to food. Not sanitary at all! 😳 She did use the little papers for getting two of the donuts but not for the other two. Not looking forward to food poisoning. Tongs are a neat device, try them out. The cherry donut was very tasty. I like that it was glazed on both sides so it did not dry out. The chocolate frosted stands out in that the frosting actually stays on the donut & not on the paper. The two apple fritters were eaten the next day. Both were seriously thick, well-glazed (again, avoided drying out) but only one had any apple in it and very little at that. The cinnamon was a bit lighter than others but still good. Work on your proper food handling/sanitation and maybe I'll stop in again. Tried to stop at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024. (The Italian sub sounds delicious.) Lights are out, doors are locked. No longer serving at this location or maybe an extended holiday closure I can't say. But I'm still hungry.

The best Italian subs. In North America And the pizza is amazing and make sure you get the fresh cannoli

Google
An old-world charm. My family has been going since they were located in Detroit. They have wonderful pizza, subs, and pastries. Staff is very friendly, but the place is carried out only and sometimes there is a wait. The service can be little slow due to the wait and everyone getting orders by a ticket pull.

I was there on a weekend about noon and they didn't appear to have much left. What I did buy, apple bread, was fairly good, but I was disappointed in the atmosphere and I felt like I was ignored for a long time before someone assisted me. It seemed like there were "regulars" or friends of the person's working who came in after me who were prioritized for service. Sadly, they took the last loaves of bread that I was going to order. They should have a "number" system, so that persons are served in the order that they come in. I will not go back. There are many other bakeries in the area that care about ALL their customers and who have more bakery item choices.

Love this place. I’ve been going there for over 50 years. As a kid I walked there all the time because I lived a street away. As an adult I have to drive 40 miles to get my fix of Bommarito’s. It’s worth every mile. Best food ever. It’s like going home every time I walk in their door.

Yelp
I was absolutely blown away by the Spicy Terassini Pizza at Bommarito Bakery! The crust was perfectly bubbly, packed with flavor, and clearly made with care. You can tell they use high-quality ingredients, and the love they put into their pizza truly shines through. St. Clair Shores has no shortage of pizza spots, but this easily lands in my top 3. The only downside is their early closing time (6 PM on weekdays), so make sure you plan ahead and get your orders in before 5:30 PM if you're craving pizza. Totally worth it! I'm looking forward to trying their sandos and bakery items in the near future! Check out my Instagram for more @hangry_detroiter

Yelp
We decided to pop into Bommarito Bakery for lunch after hearing good things and wanting to give it a try. My wife has bought items from their bakery before and always enjoyed them, so we had high hopes. Right away, I was impressed by the cleanliness and organization of the space--it's not just a bakery, but also has a grocery section with some unique offerings. They had a sale rack with what looked like day-old baked goods, which all seemed delicious, though I couldn't spot prices, so I held off on that this time. For lunch, we ordered an Italian sub and a tuna salad sub. Both were fantastic--the bread was perfectly baked, and the fillings were generous and flavorful. Prices were reasonable, too. We also grabbed a bag of Great Lakes chips, a family favorite since we moved to the area. Even though we arrived at a busy time, just after the lunch rush, the staff handled everything smoothly. They were efficient, friendly, and kept things moving despite the crowd. We noticed they had hot pizza and fresh baked goods, adding to the appeal. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'm sure we'll be back!

Yelp
The food is amazing! The business is family owned and the food shows it!! Made with love and very welcoming. Have been going there for 20+ years and crave it from time to time

Brian L.

Yelp
The best ever. Bommarito bread drying out for home made stuffing. The best subs, donuts, bread, and cannolis in town.

Laura D.

Yelp
Been going here my whole life, my dad grew up just a couple blocks from here so it's always been on the radar. The place is small so it can get a little claustrophobic when busy, but that's generally not a problem. Good subs, even if the bread can be a bit too crunchy for my tastes. Love their pizza! The cannoli cream is delicious and you can get it in a tub... makes an awesome holiday dip. Biggest complaint is it can be slllllloooooowwww if there are more than 2 people in there. Not the end of the world, but it it not a place you can always go if you don't have a lot of extra time. Today is Fat Tuesday so we ordered some paczki for a large multi family order. They are the best place for cannoli ones so we tend to get them here. We were shorted 2 cannoli and a custard. The number looked correct but it seems there were place holder 'donuts' in the 2nd box (we assume for the 2 missing cannoli as I think they are filled to order) and something we did not order was mistakenly added. We called and they said they would get that fixed up for us after the appointment we're at. :) If you are in the neighborhood, make sure you check it out for a slice or some baked goods.

Fred N.

Yelp
My Mom's cousins were part of the family's old guard who ran the place when I was young and we lived in St. Clair Shores. Still the best subs, cannoli and italian cookies around!!

Michael D.

Yelp
Great Subs , Bakery , Deli , Wine Selection, and small food selection. For 10.00 you get a sandwich that blows the 17.00 Tropical Smoothie Wrap away .

Lisa L.

Yelp
Bommarito Bakery has great pizza slices, subs, and baked ricotta! If you're in a rush their slices are tasty and ready! I like the bar-b-que chicken slices. My kids enjoy their Italian subs. If you visit during a busy time, prepare to wait in line. This can test your patience if you called an order in. Sometimes they'll offer you a free cookie while you wait. I found that a plus. They have a parking lot on the side of their building. It's a good bakery to stop in if you're on the go and driving down Mack Ave.

Karen B.

Yelp
I ordered an antipasto salad. The lettuce was iceberg lettuce and was packaged separately from the toppings which was nice;however, the salami looked expired. I couldn't eat it. Spent around $12 and I don't live close so I wasn't going to drive back to return.

Lisa M.

Yelp
I just adore this little bakery! They have tons of options ranging from donuts to Italian cookies, to pizza, enormous Italian subs, wine, etc. We ordered the Italian subs with the spicy peppers. So delicious! The bread is fresh and has a great chew to it. If you're in the area, you have to stop in and check this place out!

Terehia W.

Yelp
Great spicy Terrazini & sammies, they've taken care of us for quite a few events. Love it there. So close to my home. GRATZI!

Yelp
It's a nautical Cracker Barrel :) love coming here for a fun lunch . They play oldies which I like . Makes you feel like your in Florida . My favorite food is the deep fried mushrooms , it's an appetizer but you could eat it as a whole meal. There chicken fingers are amazing but it isn't on the main menu for adults :p ( just have to ask I guess ) I love that they support so many charity's and you can bring cash to donate to one of your choice . Mikes got a big heart

Ian L.

Yelp
Wonderful staff, very friendly. I got the meatball sub, a slice of pizza and a donut. Great prices and the food was amazing, I felt like Tony soprano getting food here. Seriously, I am 30 minutes away from here and I will be back!

Paul Y.

Yelp
the pizza is tough! they're either overworking the dough or adding too much flour. I've bought their slices many times and that pizza was not always tough or over chewy! please let them know

Bridgette Z.

Yelp
This is a really great old school bakery and market. The service is very friendly and fast. You get charged an additional 4% if you pay with a card instead of cash. Some of the items are not baked by them and dont taste as fresh, and others are incredibly fresh and delicious. Theres lots of great choices here, I will be back to try more

Des C.

Yelp
Amazing pizza! Amazing service! Cute place and very clean! I love it there!! So many nice people!

Lee J.

Yelp
This is one of those places that you can't miss if you're ever in the area. The fresh baked bread smell and aroma of cheesy thin pizza enters your nose once you walk in. The selection of pastries and sweets sticks out: Homemade cannolis, cream horns, eclairs, Italian cookies, and donuts. The sub can't be beat. Meat and veggies with a oil and vinegar mix on a freshly baked sub bun is to die for, possibly the best sandwich I've had.

Kathleen M.

Yelp
Best cannoli anywhere!! Always go there for our Italian Christmas cookies. Just like grandma's. Brad is fantastic Subs and pizza just wonderful.

Erica K.

Yelp
The best Italian bakery around. Anytime I'm on the East side of town we make a special trip. The subs are to die for...with the fresh bread and perfectly sliced meat. The pizza is also excellent and priced right!! We also love all of the bakery items we've tried...cannolis, cookies, etc. Another fun favorite is their lemon Italian ice. Worth a trip if you've never been...you won't regret it. The kindest, friendliest staff as well.

Blake Y.

Yelp
ALWAYS grab a number and wait till your called! This place has the best everything, have never been disappointed with a lunch from here, it's not fast food but the line always moves at a perfect pace.

Amie K.

Yelp
Best subs in town. Love that it's family owned. Love that you can order subs, pizza and cannolis on line!

Robert C.

Yelp
The best cannolis around, also really good pizza, and great sub sandwiches. I've been going there for 40 years it's just as good now.

Homer S.

Yelp
This place is the best for pizza and great bakery they never disappoint............................................

Mark S.

Yelp
The subs are made to order and are very good. The cannolis are filled to order and are some of the best around. The employees are all great.

Renee J.

Yelp
My favorite all time Italian bakery for rolls and breads. They have awesome subs, primarily because the roll is so delicious. Love their lemon Italian ice, and seasonal Raspberry ice. Nice variety of different brands of spaghetti sauces, as well as variety of wines. Great canolli cake (cassava cake).

medusa l.

Yelp
Fantastic selection of baked goods, and excellent pizza and sandwiches. Can even get day old slices st a discount

Roy G.

Yelp
Old school! Nice ambiance with local ladies making subs. Nice place. Good wine selection.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
I come here for the cheap delicious pizza slices, the fantastic fresh donuts. The bread is good but only until end of day. The cannoli are made of cream with chocolate bits and almonds. The subs are the attraction. It's so good. Order inkine and pick up from side door if you can. There is still always a long line. Also they make the cuccidata all year here.

Chris S.

Yelp
An East-side staple that has been around so long that you don't mind waiting in a long line on a Saturday morning. Greatest donuts on the planet. I'll stand by that statement. Greatest cannoli on the east side! I'll also stand by that statement.

Brian L.

Yelp
Had an Italian sub for lunch today. It was amazing! The sesame seed roll is amazing and they put plenty of meat along with lettuce, tomato, onion, and banana peppers. Great dressing as well. It had been too long since I've been to Bommartio's. I'll be back much sooner!

Stephen H.

Yelp
Expensive but authentic Italian bake goods and deli items. They tend to be closed and on vacation about a month every year.

John V.

Yelp
Good food, service not so good. When you order a pizza over the phone, you shouldn't have to wait in line with everyone else who are waiting to place a deli/ pizza order. Last time I walked in was in 2013. I walked out WITHOUT my pizzas and walked in and out of Little Caesars in under 2 minutes.

John F.

Yelp
Great local place. The only issue is when they get busy you might be waiting 45 min. I would suggest looking at Wally's frozen custard as a different service model. One person takes the order, and rings it up while while 5 other people work to get your order together. Currently one person takes your order, assembles most of it, and then rings you up. Some times it takes a while especially when the customer keeps adding things, which is not Bommarito's fault. Even with that it's still worth the wait, and I think you can order online as an option.

Cuisine W.

Yelp
An age old institution of St Clair Shores........Best Subs and Pizza around anywhere! Great baked goods and fresh bread! You can't go wrong with Bommarito food! Great selection of wine too! Wonderful cannoli's and lemon ice.

Cathy C.

Yelp
Bommarito's bakery is by far the best Italian bakery in the metro Detroit area. The cookies are truly amazing. The canollis are better than any I've had in Sicily. The pizza, Muffaletta and subs are worth going out of you way for. It's so rare today to find a multi generational family business these days. The value the parents instilled into their daughters has been passed on to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is something to be admired by all. We are fortunate to have such a treasure in our community. Actually we moved an hour away and drive back to stock up our freezer on a regular basis. The Caputo's

Yelp
Best cannoli in Southeast Michigan and maybe the state! We love these freshly filled delicacies. Don't even get me started on the Italian Ice. This isn't that crappy stuff you get in the grocer's freezer. Smooth textured ice with tart lemon and a light sweetness make this a refreshing summer delight. We love Bommarito's and have made it a family tradition. My mom used to get lemon ice when she was kid in the 1950s. Then she took me and now I take my children. For almost 75 years we have been eating Bommarito's Italian Ice, Cannoli, delicious breads, pizzas, and cookies. In 75 years, we have never found a more perfect Italian Ice.

Michael L.

Yelp
Saturday, March 2nd...6:15 pm. Bommarito's has been a family favorite for the last 23 years. Always tell people about the great food. The service....depends on who waits on you. Back to my 1 star review for service. I call last night to get an order for 2 pizzas. The lady who answered then says..."I'm sorry we stop taking pizza orders at 6:15 because we close at 7 pm and the pizza guy is done making them for the day." It's one thing to make the choice to close early or stop making something as a business owner, but don't look at the time and then tell me that I called at the same time they stopped taking orders. It's not a company policy. I have ordered pizzas closer to closing time before. Bad service choice + LIE= bad review online!

Christopher C.

Yelp
Great place on the east side to go for a lunch slice or a cold deli sandwich. Practically an institution of its own. Its not always perfect, and I wouldn't do mu grocery shopping there, but for a good quick slice or sandwich this is your place. They also have great cookies.

Charlotte W.

Yelp
Support your small local businesses! Love Bommarito Bakery. It feels and tastes authentic and I feel like I'm in Italy :). I came here on a trip and heard about it by word of mouth and I'm so happy I did. I love this place and not only that its family owned but that you can tell there is so much love and care that goes into the food. They have everything. Not just your savory but your sweet too. This goes without saying...but get the Cannoli. Or maybe two...or three. Just do it. You won't be sorry.

Yelp
Prepare to be transported to pizza paradise when you step into this charming bakery pizza joint! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the delightful aroma of freshly baked bread and the tantalizing scent of bubbling cheese - a heavenly combination that instantly whetted my appetite. The highlight of this place is undoubtedly their artisanal pizzas, crafted with love and creativity. Their dough is a masterpiece on its own, a delicate balance of crispy crust and pillowy softness that forms the perfect foundation for their mouthwatering toppings. Each pizza is a work of art, generously adorned with the freshest and most flavorful ingredients, carefully selected to create a symphony of tastes in every bite. What sets this bakery pizza joint apart is their commitment to quality. You can taste the difference in every slice, and it's evident that they take pride in the craftsmanship that goes into making their pizzas. It's an experience that brings me back time and time again, as I find myself eager to explore their diverse selection of flavors and combinations. Beyond the delectable pizzas, the bakery also boasts an array of other baked goods that are equally irresistible. From flaky, buttery croissants to indulgent pastries and cakes, this place is a haven for anyone with a sweet tooth. It's like stepping into a confectionery wonderland, where every treat tempts you with its alluring presentation and exquisite taste. The ambiance of the bakery is warm and inviting, with friendly staff always ready to assist you in making the perfect choice. Having visited this bakery pizza joint multiple times, I can confidently say that it's a hidden gem that deserves recognition. If you're a pizza enthusiast or simply in search of extraordinary baked goods, this is a must-visit destination. Treat yourself to a slice of heaven and indulge in the scrumptious offerings - you won't be disappointed! This place has undoubtedly earned its place as one of my favorite spots in town, and I can't wait to return for more delightful culinary adventures.

Louise P.

Yelp
It makes no sense to order a pizza by phone, be told 15 minutes, arrive 15 minutes later, and wait for all the the people in line ahead of you to be waited on before you can get your, now cold, pizza.

Michael P.

Yelp
One of the best deals on pizza in the area, really great for the price! The bakery also makes some delicious goodies, definitely worth a visit!

Lisa R.

Yelp
Very popular and busy bakery in SCS. The thin crust pizza is yummy but the baked ricotta is what always gets me in the door!

Angel B.

Yelp
Excellent food choices and pizza and their desserts are good, the price on pizza is also very good

Paul S.

Yelp
Subs, Pizza, Cookies, Italian Ice and so much more! A neighborhood staple. Worth the wait!

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Ok Inwill not go anywhere else but here when it comes to the following... 1. The subs... oh sweet lord they are like nothing you have ever experienced in your life... and people know that! So be sure to take a number because they can get busy. They make them fresh in front of you exactly how you want it with the most satisfying fresh bread in Metro Detroit!!! 2. The incredible selection of homemade Italian cookies and sweets... all also made here fresh!!! Do not pass up your opportunity to try the best Italian S cookies and Cuccidati cookies... AKA Italian fig cookies. Canolis DONE RIGHT... meaning they stuff the shells as you order them so they don't get mushy! 3. Best Italian Ice you will ever try in your life. They haven machines, one lemon ice and the other is raspberry ice. You can get a single serve or do what I do and go to their freezer and grab a quart or gallon of this sweet goodness to take home... 4. Truly authentic Italian products to satisfy all your baking needs. This place will carry everything you need to make your authentic Italian desserts and cooking desires! 5. Wine selection is like nothing I ever seen! They carry some of the best wines at the best prices! I come here all the time and so dose the rest of the people who also have discovered this piece of heaven right in our neighborhood!

Philip P.

Yelp
The best subs around. Great family that owns it & a giant sub for Super Bowl Sunday is a must.

Brian P.

Yelp
The best bakery anywhere!! The People & cookies, cakes, pastries, lemon ice, pizza & subs are the best on our planet!!!!

Yelp
I decided to try a new bakery with Mom on Wednesday May 2nd and chose this one in St Clair Shores on Greater Mack near 9 1/2 Mile Rd. This Bakery has been in business since 1925. The parking lot is very small. I noticed some people were parking on the side street and walking over. Since we arrived at 12:30 it was the lunch crowd of customer such as contractors, construction workers, nurses on their lunch hour coming and going parking near and far to grab lunch items. Perfect timing for us to walk in grab a number ticket and only wait 5 minutes to shop. This Italian bakery was filling up with many customers. Their pizza's are round or Square and pre-made ahead and keeping hot under warming lights. I also saw sub sandwiches ready to grab and go. When you walk in they have beer, wine champagne to the right a very small area. This busy and well known Bakery is for regular people, daily people or weekend people that have their favorite items to buy. We chose a number and there were 3 customers ahead of us so that gave us time to shop and look around. Mom and I decided on a loaf of Italian white bread that was on sale Wednesday for 1.99. I have Attached my pictures of different small coffee cakes, danish, large coffee cakes, Donuts, cookies by the pound and bread sticks by the pound. Many breads, many dinner rolls, Kaiser rolls with seeds without seeds. Since I introduce myself and my mom by our name and that we were first time customers, I was told that the bread and rolls and other pastries are baked fresh daily at 4 a.m. I counted 6 different pizzas hot and ready to go or Subs already made up to Grab & Go with a pop and beer section of refrigerated beverages. They also have a sign that says they take special orders for wedding, birthday and anniversary cakes or desserts for special parties. Since it was a time for * lunch crowd* rush, I only saw 2 ladies working at the counter. They certainly could use some extra help to get customers in and out fast since when you're on your lunch hour time is of the essence. The lady that helped us out was Cindy. She was very patient with my mom and explain the different flavors of the cookies. My mom chose butter cookies with a cherry on top and also butter-flavored almond cookies. My mom wanted to try a biscotti cookie to dip in her coffee so Cindy sold it to her half price. Thank you Cindy. Maybe next time we stop back in this Bakery we'll try a slice of pizza or sub for a lunch item. Then I can give this Bakery 5 stars. There was advertisement printed on my plastic bag from the FRESH bread I bought. It says they have non-alcoholic beer and wine they also do deliveries, they have 32 varieties of Italian and American Cookies. They are famous for their wedding cakes, cookie trays for parties. They also have gelato lemon ice.
