The Best Dishes Eater San Francisco’s Editors Ate in July | Eater SF

"If you’ve ever hit the perfect trifecta of a San Francisco moment — friends, perfect weather, great food — it’s a testament to what makes San Francisco great. These three elements came together on a recent July afternoon, topped off with an excellent lunch at Bon, Nene in the Mission. The cozy dining room felt welcoming, and it felt like a charming neighborhood spot as diners chatted over their dishes, or locals dropped in to pick up something to-go. The mentaiko spaghetti seemed right for the occasion, and although I initially had worries about the dish — Would I tire of the cured cod roe mix, like any experience of too much of a good thing? — it wound up perfect. The saltiness of the mentaiko was tempered by the use of butter, emulsified into a sauce, clinging to the al dente spaghetti. I worked my way through each bite, and before I knew it, I had polished off the dish, a surprise to even myself. In fact, the entire table had finished their plates in short order, and we walked away impressed and vowing to return. And when I do, this is one plate that will be on the table." - Dianne de Guzman

Only waited a few minutes to get seated around noon on a weekday but the restaurant is pretty busy. There’s some outdoor seating too. The food is really good. I recommend the mentaiko udon. Food comes out pretty fast too. Great lunch vibes.

Visited Bon, Nene based on the buzz surrounding this Japanese spot, but left feeling underwhelmed. We ordered the Takoyaki, Maguro Bowl, and Katsucurry Rice. The atmosphere is casual with one community table setup in a compact space, which creates somewhat a cozy but cramped feeling. Service was adequate, though food delivery was notably slow. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what all the hype is about. None of our three dishes felt particularly special in terms of taste, presentation, or value. The takoyaki was quite light - while they use a different sauce than most places, it didn't elevate the dish enough to make it memorable. The Katsucurry Rice tasted like something you could easily make at home with a Golden Curry box from the grocery store. The Maguro Bowl came with a disappointingly small portion for the price point. While the food wasn't bad, nothing stood out as exceptional or worth the wait. I haven't tried their pasta dish, but based on this experience, I probably won't be returning anytime soon. There are likely better Japanese options in the area for similar or better value.

My partner told me about this place after seeing buzz about it on TikTok. We both wanted to try it and so we dined in on a Friday night. The restaurant offers outdoor heated seating, but we opted for indoors since we brought our baby. Fortunately, the wait was not too long because it sure turned frigid fast. As other reviewers mentioned the restaurant is quite cozy. They also have a communal high table. We were seated near the window with a high chair. We ordered the frozen beer, potstickers, chicken karaage, maguro bowl and mentai spaghetti for dinner. For dessert we had the apple tart and the Hokkaido cheesecake. We loved the cheesecake and the spaghetti. While the other dishes were solid, the spaghetti and the cheesecake were the stars! Looking forward to coming back to try the champignon pasta.

Google
Mentaiko spaghetti has amazing umami it's a must try. Chicken Karage and Gyudon is also pretty good. Super cozy and chill place in Mission. The line was about 15 mins wait after 1pm on Friday

Google
Service and atmosphere are great, I like the vibe of this small restaurant. The food quality was good as well, especially for the price. My favorite was the Japanese curry. The gyudon what is the most unique flavors, but the tuna bowl was solid as well and had a lot of rice to fill you up. Overall, great for a casual night out at a very reasonable price.

Google
Honey, let me tell you about this little Japanese jewel box tucked away in the Mission! Bon Nene is serving FACE with their katsu curry - that chicken was breaded for the GODS, and the curry sauce? Thicker than my contour! The mentaiko pasta might not be revolutionary, but she's honest work, mama - topped with that seaweed confetti like she's ready for the ball! The ambiance is giving intimate dinner date realness - all warm woods, mood lighting, and those dramatic front windows serving storefront theater with the city lights behind you. Not every queen needs to be doing death drops and reveals - sometimes you just need that reliable sister who shows up, does her job, and makes you feel at home. The wait staff was sweet as pie, but next time I'm bringing my non-seafood eating judy, we're gonna need to get creative with that menu, okurrr? Still, for a quiet night out in the neighborhood when you don't want to march through the Valencia Street crowds, she's your girl! Four stars for being that dependable diva next door! *tongue pop*

Google
Came here with a few friends and we waited about 10 min to get seated. Good: - The food was so good, I loved the mentaiko spaghetti and it was so flavorful and tasty - The food all came out so quickly and it was way faster than expected too! - Curry rice portion sizes were good and it was very flavorful - Nice dim and quiet place to catchup with friends! Great ambiance and good for a long hang Bad: - The wait is pretty long - and it's so busy that I don't know if i can come back even if I wanted to! - The special miso ramen was a little bland Overall the experience was great and I would come back!

Google
Amazing food experience! It didn’t take us long to be seated, we ordered the Mentaiko Spaghetti and maguro bowl. Wow! Excellent meals. I highly recommend this place for a good food experience .

Yelp
This Japanese spot with the viral frozen beers and champignon mushroom pasta did not disappoint, especially when the bill came out to less than $40 per person! The Gyu don was also flavorful and hearty with the perfect balance of rice and sauce. @bonnenesf gets 5 stars for SAFAV Service Food Ambiance Alcohol Value for Money

Yelp
Very underwhelming Japanese food The arugula in the gyudon really threw me off, rice was soggy, and portions were pretty small as well.

Yelp
On the corner of Alabama and 21st street, you'll find Bon, Nene a popular Japanese restaurant known for their quality comfort dishes. We visited on a Wednesday right at opening and it was a full house right from the start. So even on weekdays, it seems like this spot fills up quickly. The menu is pretty limited but its reassuring at the same time knowing they do only a handful of dishes but they do them WELL. Their staples seem to be their mentaiko spaghetti and chicken katsu curry. The drink selection is more extensive than their entrees so I find that a bit amusing. They offer a homemade ginger ale, yuzu lemonade, yuzu matcha, and hojicha drinks. Mentaiko spaghetti - Pasta texture was great, with a nice firm bite to it. The sauce itself was unique. It tasted like the ocean in pasta form.. along with hints of shiso. It starts to grow on you after each bite. However, the dish felt like it was missing something.. perhaps a source of protein like bacon or something. Katsu curry rice - Perfectly fried chicken pieces. The batter itself was tasty and seasoned well. The curry was thick and substantial. I enjoyed the mushrooms and carrots chunks in the sauce. Textures and consistency were all great - no notes. The biggest issue in our experience was the service. We arrived at 11:58, seated at 12:02, didn't get to order until 12:12, and then received our entrees at 12:40. Our chicken karaage never came so we ended up cancelling it. We didn't really receive much service, no one checking on us and just the whole experience felt so slow. There was only one waitress working the whole front of house tending to a room quite literally full of customers. This is in no way her fault because she was working so hard and tried her best to juggle everything at once. They definitely could staff the front of house much better to deliver a more attentive service. We got so tired of waiting and trying to flag her down, we ended up just going up to the front of the cashier to ask for our check and boxes to go. As far as the food goes, the food quality is above average however not something I would go out of my way for. I thoroughly enjoyed my katsu curry while my husband found his dish to be quite average. The service was just too slow for our taste especially on a weekday right at opening. Our whole meal took an hour which is a bit long for just two people stopping in for a quick lunch.
google avatar

Chia Ling C.

Yelp
Read this before going! The overall performance was above average, and the food itself was decent. However, two out of four people in our group experienced bloating after the meal, which raised concerns. A major issue was hygiene: my friend's plate and mine were visibly recycled into the "clean plates" section at the serving area, while the other two plates were taken to the back kitchen. Watching this process was unsettling. Service was good until that point, the plate recycling practice overshadowed the experience. Unfortunately, after witnessing this, I won't be returning. The wait is also long like 45 minutes if you're curious on checking out.

Yelp
Bon Nene is one of those charming neighborhood spots that immediately makes you feel at home. The space is cozy and thoughtfully designed, blending a warm, minimalist aesthetic with a relaxed and welcoming vibe. It's the kind of place that feels perfect for a casual dinner, a date night, or catching up with friends. We visited on a Saturday night around 6:45pm and waited about 10 minutes for a table of four, which wasn't bad considering how busy it was. We were seated at a communal high-top table, which fit nicely with the laid-back neighborhood feel. We ordered their two most popular pastas along with the curry and the takoyaki. The pastas were definitely the highlight because they were rich, flavorful, and comforting. The curry was also enjoyable. The takoyaki was the one dish we would probably skip next time. Overall, Bon Nene offers delicious dishes, warm vibes, and friendly service. It is a cozy neighborhood gem worth visiting.

Yelp
Bon Nene is such a gem. This place feels like stepping into a cozy, classic Japanese eatery--simple, warm, and all about the food. We tried the Katsu- curry rice, Mentaiko Spaghetti, Gyudon, and beer. All main courses were good, authentic, full of flavor without being heavy. Service is gentle and attentive, and the vibe is calm in that very Japanese way. It's the kind of spot you go to when you want a quiet, quality meal that feels like home cooking done right.

Yelp
Daytime vibes are excellent here, little dogs gazing up at onigiri, seasonal nature bits leafing out the inside. The weekend set is an easy order, a Japanese beef patty with a hill of rice, pair of pickles, arugula salad, miso soup, and a triplet of mochi nublets with whipped cream, anko paste, leaflette of mint. Mentaiko spaghetti is just nap time noodles, buttery briney classic. And please get yourself a Kirin Frozen. They brought my husband and I straws to share one, such communal foam. And warning that the Orion the Draft is a bottled beer, I didn't make the rules. Usually full but wait is often about five-ten minutes. Late lunch on weekends is perfect to swing by

Yelp
Bon nene is a classic spot if you're feeling something delicious, cozy, and casual all at once. It's a frequent destination for me and my girlfriend's Friday night dinner plans, and it's never failed to impress. The star of the show is their mentaiko spaghetti. I've never been able to find anything like it or replicate the taste at home - a super creamy and rich dish that is one of my favs in SF. Equally as good are their chicken karaage and onigiri. They are both very authentic and no frills dishes that make you feel like you're eating out of your mother's kitchen. Overall, would highly recommend bon nene!

Yelp
After waiting in line for about 30 min for dinner on a weekend, we got seated inside. The menu is rather small but it was very tough to pick since every dish sounded exciting to try. Our favorite was the fusion pasta as it had the most unique taste. It was followed by the beef bowl (we thought the rice was a bit much) and the raw tuna bowl (we thought the tuna had a bit too much soy sauce). Overall, a great experience!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this spot in SF for a while after seeing so many videos pop up on my TikTok about it. So glad I did! We came here on a Saturday night around 7 and was able to get seated before it got busy for the waitlist. They have outdoor and indoor seating but I would prefer indoors for the ambiance. The place has a cozy, homey vibe with warm lighting that makes it feel really inviting. We tried a few dishes: the chicken karaage, mentaiko pasta, tuna don, and miso soup. The clear standout of our whole dinner was definitely the mentaiko pasta. Easily one of the best dishes I've had in a while. It had the perfect balance of umami, creaminess and flavor. If you come here, don't skip the mentaiko pasta. It's a must-try. Will come back for that!

Yelp
I finished an hour and a half of doing cardio so that is my biased for this restaurant, but it tasted really good. The gyudon udon was so tasty and the flavor was all there. The meatiness and the sweet savory broth hit, the only problem was the lack of spice( highkey my own problem, but i wish they had a spice i could have added or something. Take my review as biased af) my friends got the mushroom spaghetti (champignon or whatever) it tasted pretty good but they thought it lacked some type of protein (one of them kept insisting on bacon). I thought the takoyaki was interesting because i usually have them with some sweet sauce and mayo, but they gave like a salty vegetable broth, so that was very different. The karaage was pretty good doe. It hits how karaage should have and i would go back for that and maybe the pasta

Yelp
This popped up and we came here to this cozy little spot on a Friday evening. We came at around 6:30 and put our names down and waited for about 45 minutes. It was perfect weather outside so we got two people watch and got more and more excited as we saw more and more food come out. We tried the karaage and it was so juicy! The takoyaki wasn't a standout, but the rest of the meal was so great! We had the mentaiko spaghetti, champion pasta, and katsu curry. The highlight was easily the pastas. Hot, flavorful, delicious. As someone who grew up in Japan and is always looking for these specific flavors of home this hit the spot! Cozy neighborhood eats with delicious food would be a great way to sum up our evening at this place. It was definitely worth the wait!
google avatar

Lily N.

Yelp
There was a wait since the restaurant is small, but we didn't have to wait that long. We did family style, so I was able to try a little bit of everything. My favorite is the mentaiko pasta! The curry was flavorful, but the chicken katsu was okay. The tuna don bowl I believe is what that is was okay. I wouldn't get it again!
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Really solid meal!! The spaghetti was my favorite but both pastas I would come back for. Curry was good but nothing wowing. Came around 6 on a Friday night and it was only abt a 15 min wait and service was quick. Will be revisiting!
google avatar

Binh P.

Yelp
Only get the mentaiko pasta here. It's the best dish. It's got such a deep umami flavor from the butter and soy sauce and the noodles were al dente. They do this dish perfectly. Comfort food at its finest. Also tried the mushroom pasta just to confirm that I should only order the mentaiko here. The mushroom pasta was not interesting. Just tasted like salty-sweet experimental noodles that my mom likes to make at home. It's a popular spot, so expect a wait if you're not getting here at opening.

Yelp
Hey munchkins hope yall are doing well! It's bittersweet to announce that "The Professor" will be leaving the Bay Area. I'm super proud of him for starting a new job. To celebrate we went out to Bon Nene as part of a food crawl based on his favorite places. First up is Bon Nene and I can he see why he likes it. We arrived right at opening and there was no wait. The waiters were very attentive. The Gyudon is quite nice. The soup is quite hearty and smooth. It was definitely my favorite part of the dish. While the meat didn't stand out as much it was quite flavorful. You could taste the umami! "The pickle baller" got the champignon pasta and she enjoyed it. It was the perfect amount of garlic for a medium garlic fan. A great start to the crawl! Stay tuned for part 2 as we go to Garden Creamery!

Yelp
Cute and small restaurant with limited and tight seating. The inside has a nice aesthetic just a little small. They offer outside seating as well. Service was quick and friendly. Mentaiko pasta was good in flavor, a bit dry, and not enough shiso leaf for my liking. You're definitely not going to hit your protein goals with this dish, but it was tasty. 4/5 Chicken karate was a bit dry as well, but I like chicken! 3.5/5 Katsu curry was pretty good, probably the best and standard thing on the menu tonight. 4.2/5 Nice little Japanese fusion restaurant, happy to have it in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute Japanese spot in the Mission that is ALWAYS busy - even on weekday nights. I would recommend getting there early! Love their mentaiko spaghetti (perfectly al dente and had lots of mentaiko). Their hijiki salad was also very good. I thought their katsu curry and gyudon were just ok / nothing special.
google avatar

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in sf! Bon Nene is a cute restaurant on the corner with indoor / outdoor seating (limited spots outside). On a sunny day, I recommend sitting outside! It's refreshing and dogs are allowed outside! :) The food is absolutely amazing here! You can't go wrong with any of the options, I suggest the katsu curry, and spaghetti! For drinks, try the hojicha latte and milk tea! This is such a cute date spot, for lunch it's easy to grab a spot! For dinner I def recommend making reservations. Enjoy!
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Saturday around x PM. The space is relatively small so usually there's a wait -- you put your name down on a clipboard and have to stay there to hear them call your name (no callbacks). I waited around 20 minutes for a table. I mainly wanted to come here to try their mentaiko spaghetti so I ordered that alongside chicken kaarage. Server was super attentive and friendly! Mentaiko pasta met my expectations and made me glad I tried it out !! It was very creamy and the roe adds a nice gritty texture to the bouncy noodles. Chicken kaarage was a 2.5/5 -- the batter tasted bitter and was not good. Luckily dunking it in sauce helped out, but wouldn't recommend. Overall would probably come again just for the mentaiko spaghetti !!
google avatar

Caili C.

Yelp
Came to Bon, Nene on a Saturday night around 6pm and it was a good thing that we came for an early-ish dinner as it's a small restaurant and got full soon after. Mentaiko Spaghetti: This is probably the most popular dish here! It's quite rich and very umami with the mentaiko cream sauce. I loved the texture of the noodles which were springy with a nice chew. I normally wouldn't go for pasta, but this is a must if you visit. Gyudon: The thinly sliced beef and onion bowl was good and the flavor was on point but I felt like there was too much rice compared to the other ingredients. It's very home-style but something you can also make pretty easily at home. By the time we left there was a decent line outside so would definitely recommend that you come early to avoid a wait!
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
I like the atmosphere here a lot and the cute street side sitting. The food is good, but expensive for what you get. For example, the rice bowls are good, particularly the meet and stuff on top, but the bowl is a lot of rice and only small portions of the toppings. You can usually get a table without a reservation and a short wait.
google avatar

Qinnan L.

Yelp
Cute neighborhood Japanese spot with simple but good menu. Service was very polite We ordered the maguro bowl, onigilly set (with two onigilly, karage, radish, miso soup, and edamame), hojicha latte, and barley tea. The maguro bowl was refreshing - high quality tuna and flavorful rice. The onigilly was solid - but a lot of rice and not much filling.
google avatar

Joanne G.

Yelp
Yum yum yum. This is such a lovely Japanese fusion cafe style restaurant, and one of my favorite restaurants overall in the city! The space is small so be prepared for a wait on the weekends, but service moves quickly. The interior has a very rustic charm and doesn't feel overcrowded. On this visit we ordered: - chicken karaage: probably a little over fried, but still very tasty - mentaiko spaghetti: one of my favorite things on the menu and well portioned - gyudon: savory and soupy sliced beef dish. Tastes so homey!
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
Heard great things about this place so had to check it out! It fills up quick for a smaller space so best to get there early. I tried the vegetarian starter, metiako pasta, the mushroom pasta and the chef special which was the salmon rice with Dashi broth. Everything was good, the standouts were the metiako pasta not too creamy and the chef special. Also had the sparking sake and the warm sake Which paired well with our meal. Next time I would try their curry or meat centered dishes. Worth a try.
google avatar

Aiza C.

Yelp
Great service and great food. There is a line even for a week day so be prepared to wait a little! The katsu was very good, the karaage was super juicy (ask for a hot sauce if you want it with a spicier kick but their hot sauce is not that hot it's more vinegary and tomatoey) The spaghetti was very good but personally i'd get it as a side dish :))
google avatar

Tessa V.

Yelp
Aesthetic and quaint Japanese bistro in the mission! We came here for lunch on a Saturday and had to wait around 30 minutes for a table, but once we were seated we were very impressed by the lovely atmosphere! I ordered the vegetarian curry rice and it was pretty good, but nothing too memorable. My friends who ordered the onigiri lunch boxes liked their meals and even had leftovers to bring home. However, the service and vibes here are great! They even give pocky sticks as a free little dessert, which is a cute touch.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
This is one of the cutest, coziest restaurants in all of SF!! The vibes inside are amazing, but they don't take reservations so be prepared to come early or wait a long time. We showed up at 5:50PM on a Saturday and were sat immediately but the restaurant filled up quickly. Definitely try the Mentaiko Pasta - so savory and comforting and the portion is huge! My friends had the curry, in both vegetarian and beef, and they enjoyed that as well. We started with the Vegetarian Small Bites and I would not recommend that - flavors were delicious but the portion was tiny. It was like banchan sized portions but they charged $12 for it. Everything else was reasonably priced and portioned though!
google avatar

Ashley Y.

Yelp
Finally tried this place after having it bookmarked for years! I came during lunch on a Friday and it was surprisingly busy. I got the hamburger special (didn't see it on the menu, but it was written on their chalkboard sign outside the restaurant), which was so delicious and refreshing. I love the yuzu sauce they used and overall it was a really filling meal. The restaurant decor is also really cute with cottage vibes hahah
google avatar

Priya M.

Yelp
You won't be leaving this place hungry! And do yourself a favor and get the Gyudon. Friend and I went a bit early to snag a spot - it gets busy quick so try and come as it opens! But we got a seat relatively quick even for a Saturday night! It is walk-in only (assuming for larger parties you'll have to call?) so that's why a friend and I went early. Super friendly staff, menu is not super large but I love that all the options are really solid. Everything was perfectly shareable and great portion sizes. We ordered karrage, miso soup and the tuna meatballs special for apps. Friend had the katsu and I got the Gyudon - everything was amazing but the Gyudon was the favorite of the evening. House hot sake is solid (filtered) and the dry sake was also super delicious. It had a very light aroma, wasn't really all that strong but had a great mouthfeel. Definitely a great place to go with friends/date night or even for larger groups!
google avatar

Evelynne L.

Yelp
My group and I got here around 6:40pm on a Friday night and didn't get seated until 7:40, so it was about an hour wait for a group of 3. We ordered the potstickers and karaage as appetizers and they came together! The potstickers were alright, a little burnt but still good. The karaage was good but the outside was not crispy enough. We ordered the mentaiko spaghetti, katsu curry rice and gyudon udon. The mentaiko has a really nice umami flavor to it. The curry was tasty and the katsu was crunchy on the outside but not as thick so it wasn't as meaty. The gyudon udon was cooked perfectly! The noodles were chewy and the meat was sweet. We also ordered the frozen beer and it was quite refreshing.
google avatar

Mindy H.

Yelp
We were looking for a place that was open late after climbing at Mission Cliffs and found this place! The restaurant is super quaint and dimly lit. The food was pretty good - we ordered the katsu curry, mentaiko udon, and gyudon bowl. Katsu curry 10/10: curry had really good flavor and the katsu was nice and crispy. Gyudon bowl 7/10: beef was good but the ratio of meat to rice could be a bit better Champignon pasta 8/10: pretty good Service was also really nice. They let us in 30 min before closing

Yelp
Bon, Nene's mentaiko spaghetti has me in an absolute chokehold! Don't ask me how anything else is here; I'm obsessed with this dish and I order it every single visit. I get a craving for it about once a month and have to return for lunch / dinner / takeout. I got my wisdom teeth out last month and the last real meal I had before a week of soft foods was literally this mentaiko spaghetti. I am obsessed. Attaching photos of my latest orders of this dish. If you do nothing else, please try it when you visit!

Yelp
Food (1 of 2 stars): Food was pretty good. Chicken karaage was good and same with yuzu lemonade. I felt like the Gyudon had a bit too much rice in it, not as much protein, but the flavor overall was good. The spaghetti was a flavor I haven't had before and thought it was really good; it reminded me of a Japanese version of carbonara! Service (2 of 2 stars): Came on a Saturday just a bit after they opened and was still easily able to get a table for two. All servers were really friendly and helpful! Food also didn't take too long to come out. Ambiance (1 of 1 star): Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Dining room had a good vibe to it and the bathroom was clean

Yelp
This is such a cute restaurant, and the food was amazing! The indoor seating makes great use of the small space, and I truly felt like I was in someone's home enjoying a home cooked meal. I had the frozen beer, which was int. It wasn't really frozen, but super frothy with some frozen pieces in the foam. For food I had the chicken katsu, which was delicious! The sauce had a great flavor, and the chicken and vegetables were cooked perfectly. A bit on the pricey side, but definitely worth it for a nice night out. Would come back!

Yelp
No wait on a Tuesday around 6:30pm. We were lucky to get a table for 5 (we did share it, tastefully, with another group. There was a plant in the middle of the table for privacy), as they seemed pretty busy with a small wait. I paid $34.80 total for my share of 4 entrees, 2 appetizers, 3 cocktails, 2 non-alcoholic drinks, split between 5 of us. * Mentaiko spaghetti ($19) - 3.5 stars. * Tofu bowl ($13) - 4.5 stars. Lovely silky tofu with soft crisp layer. * Gyudon ($19) - 4 stars. * Curry rice ($19) - 3.5 stars. * Hijiki salad ($13) - 3 stars. * Chicken karaage ($11) - 4.5 stars. Super moist meat, great crisp.

A homey and delicious fusion spot tucked away in the Mission! My friend and I went in at 6:45 pm on a Tuesday, and we still had a 5-10 min wait for an indoor table (walk in only). The interior felt like someone's living room with a nod towards the Japanese izakaya experience (closely packed wooden tables). The menu is one page but at least 3-5 vegetarian options (including curry). I ordered the Champignon Pasta + Yuzu beer (light lemon, not a sour). The food came out in less than 15 minutes - the pasta was very mushroom forward and lightly buttery/seaweed-y - it is not overly seasoned but delicious in its simplicity. I also appreciate that veggie versions of menu items were cheaper Drinks & good plate of food for under $40 all in feels solid for San Francisco - great vibe for dinner with friends, parents, date, or even solo!

Yelp
I've been here a handful of times at this point and have always loved their iconic mentaiko pasta. This time around, I tried their gyudon and loved the meat! It did feel like the ratio of rice to other ingredients felt a bit off (there was too much rice). In that sense, I probably wouldn't get it again. The seaweed salad was yummy and unique and something I'd definitely order the next time I come in addition to the mentaiko pasta. The vibes here are warm and cozy. There's also usually a wait so try to get a reservation if you can during dinner time!

Yelp
I came here with a friend on a Saturday night -- the wait was quite long but worth it! We got their special salmon rice bowl with rooibos tea, mushroom pasta, and mentaiko pasta. All the dishes were super delicious and full of flavor. The servers were very nice and the food came relatively quick considering how busy they were. The restaurant has a very homey and cozy atmosphere. Will definitely come back next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
Cute little place with pretty authentic Japanese cuisine, we ordered the mentaiko pasta and Tonkatsu Curry and both were delicious. The mentaiko pasta tasted very similar to what I've had in Japan so was pleasantly surprised. This place usually fills up pretty quickly once it opens, so would suggest to come right when they open up, otherwise there would most likely be a wait. However it's worth it if you are in the neighborhood!

Yelp
This was a super cute little shop near the Mission. I loved the decor. I love Japanese/French fusion-style food. The mushroom champignon noodle dish I ordered was with al dente spaghetti noodle. I also enjoyed the pot sticker with yuzu sauce.

Yelp
Bon, nene is straight out a studio ghibli film. The interior is quirky, quaint and cute. The servers are so sweet and it really feels like being in a little café in Japan. We ordered a Matcha IPA to share, which was surprisingly not too hoppy. The matcha flavor still came through quite well all considering and it was a really pleasant addition for us. The takoyaki was unlike a lot of the other takoyaki's. It isn't served with a bulldog sauce, but rather a much lighter dashi sauce. The exterior is crispy while the interior is especially doughy in comparison. The gyudon tasted exactly like what I had in Japan, which was so comforting to eat. The beef was fresh and tender, and the flavors really came through nicely. It was really balanced in terms of all the different toppings in it. The mentaiko also tasted exactly like what I had in Japan: light, creamy and rich. It was a perfect pasta! Great neighborhood to take a walk around after you're done eating and pretend you have a second stomach to go to second dinner!

Yelp
Finally got a chance to try Bon, Nene in person! I've gotten delivery a few times from here but nothing beats dining in for fresh al dente noodles. We got the two pasta dishes and we unanimously agreed the mentai pasta was better than mushroom. The wait for a the weekend dinner service is very long and would recommend going on a week day as you can only wait outside with your whole party. Once sat they were attentive and consistent in checking if we needed anything. The inside has beautiful lighting from multiple low lights setting the mood to be more intimate. Each table is quite small even when they push the tables together for a party of 10+. Overall would come back again but would not be willing to wait more than 15min.

Yelp
So ever since I came across Bon Nene's Yelp page, I've been wanting to give this place a try. The restaurant name is so cute and the food looks appetizing as well. We've been meaning to find pasta (Japanese style) somewhere since we had some amazing ones in Japan and Bon Nene did not disappoint! Though the vibe is totally different, the food did bring me back to Japan a bit! The restaurant itself isn't too big. It's got a cafe, somewhat retro vibe to it - kinda casual, kinda cute at the same time. They have both indoor seating and outdoor seating of various sizes. It's sort of free for all to sit where you want if it's not too busy. Our host was really nice! I think they have different menus for different times of day/week, but today we got the weekend menu. They had a weekly lunch set that changes, but we didn't opt for that one. My partner and I opted to share 1) Champignon Pasta with parmesan on the side, 2) Gyudon, and 3) Chicken Karaage. I also got a Yuzunade, while my partner went for the Frozen Kirin. They do take a little bit of time to make your order. I think it's a relatively small kitchen. First to come was our drinks! My Yuzunade was really refreshing. It's probably a mix between yuzu and lemonade (kind of obvious from the name, but who knows). It's a tad citrusy, a bit tart, balanced with a bit of sweetness, but not too sweet! It had a really nice distinct yuzu flavor to it as well. Perfect start to a meal. My partner's Frozen Kirin was a nice surprise. We weren't sure what to expect, but they did something with the foam because that was the frozen part of it. It's light and airy, but also icy. Even though I only like sampling a bit of my partner's drink most of the time, I found it quite delicious. Now for our meal! The Chicken Kaarage as appetizer. They did their Kaarage quite nicely. These chicken pieces were sorta thin, but that meant having more surface area for the batter to grab onto. The outer layer came out nice and crispy, but the chicken retained it's moisture. These were some good size, juicy chicken pieces. The aioli it came with paired nicely too - added a pleasant, tangy taste. Next, the Gyudon. It's not usually the first thing I go for because I'm not that big of a meat eater, but it was a popular menu item on their Yelp page, so we grabbed one to try. No regrets on it either. The Gyudon was a good size. We opted for brown rice and it came topped with some ginger, onions, an egg, some seaweed, and some thinly sliced beef. This bowl of rice was saucy. Even after mixing everything together, there was still a bit of sauce pooled on the bottom. This was a delicious rice bowl, but quite filling. The ginger pieces was a nice mix to the rice bowl. It was strong, and helped cut the sauce and flavor a bit. But I have to say the Champignon Pasta was my favorite between the two main entrees. The pasta was perfectly cooked to al dente. I think they pan-fried it at the end when they mix all the ingredients together, so you even get some bits of crunchy pasta that were pan-fried. The dish itself looked quite simple, but it turned out delicious! It's most likely from the garlic butter. There's a bit of mushroom varieties in there (though I think I could have used more). The seaweed and bits of sesame seed added some nice texture. My partner said the parmesan really tied everything together, but even though I don't eat cheese, I thought it was still delicious as is. I really enjoyed my meal here and I'm glad there wasn't a wait here during a Saturday lunch hour. My thought is that their menu items isn't anything new, but whatever they have on their menu are made really well. Everything we had was fantastic. Service was really kind. I'm hoping to try some onigiri or a different pasta next time!

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Friday night and it did not disappoint! We came around 7pm with a party of 4 and got seated right away outdoors. The menu is fairly simple with a wide selection of drinks too. I got the yuzu sake over ice and I highly recommend getting this here. We got a couple items to share like the chicken karaage, mentaiko spaghetti, gyudon over udon, and the beef curry rice. Everything we got was delicious and a 10/10. The fusion aspect wasn't over the top and keeping the dishes simple made it really delicious! Around 7:30 the place starts to get crowded and a line forms so make sure to come early or just be prepared to wait.

Yelp
I was very excited to try Bon Nene and I am so glad I did! Chicken Katsu- Curryrice (5/5) - This dish was so flavorful and delicious Takoyaki (Not pictured) (5/5) - Honestly some of the best takoyaki I have tried! It tasted fresh and although it didn't come with takoyaki sauce on top, it was still really good Chicken Karaage (4/5) - This chicken was really good! Nothing super special but it was good There was a wait time when me and my friend arrived, this place can get pretty packed on weekends! Service was friendly :)

Yelp
The beef curry with udon was warm and soothing but a bit more watery than I expected. Maybe I was expecting the same thickness as the other option, the beef curry with rice. The mentaiko spaghetti had a very strong taste. I am a big fan of the fishy taste but it was not something I could finish all at once

Yelp
Bon, Nene is such a cute neighborhood spot! It's been on my yelp bookmarks forever so i'm glad I finally had a chance to visit. I came with a girlfriend and we ordered two things to share: the gyudon rice bowl and the mentaiko spaghetti! Hands down, the mentaiko spaghetti was our favorite. The flavor is indescribable unless you know what mentaiko/cod roe tastes like, but trust me, it's delicious! I've been looking up videos on how to make it at home since I finished the dinner, lol! The gyudon bowl was also delicious, very savory with the stewed beef and onions, and topped with a perfectly poached egg. To me, Bon, Nene is a restaurant with Japanese comfort food. Service is friendly as well. I can't wait to come back! Although i'll be sure to come early-ish because it does get busy around 6pm on a weekday.
