Yelp
So ever since I came across Bon Nene's Yelp page, I've been wanting to give this place a try. The restaurant name is so cute and the food looks appetizing as well. We've been meaning to find pasta (Japanese style) somewhere since we had some amazing ones in Japan and Bon Nene did not disappoint! Though the vibe is totally different, the food did bring me back to Japan a bit! The restaurant itself isn't too big. It's got a cafe, somewhat retro vibe to it - kinda casual, kinda cute at the same time. They have both indoor seating and outdoor seating of various sizes. It's sort of free for all to sit where you want if it's not too busy. Our host was really nice!
I think they have different menus for different times of day/week, but today we got the weekend menu. They had a weekly lunch set that changes, but we didn't opt for that one. My partner and I opted to share 1) Champignon Pasta with parmesan on the side, 2) Gyudon, and 3) Chicken Karaage. I also got a Yuzunade, while my partner went for the Frozen Kirin. They do take a little bit of time to make your order. I think it's a relatively small kitchen. First to come was our drinks! My Yuzunade was really refreshing. It's probably a mix between yuzu and lemonade (kind of obvious from the name, but who knows). It's a tad citrusy, a bit tart, balanced with a bit of sweetness, but not too sweet! It had a really nice distinct yuzu flavor to it as well. Perfect start to a meal. My partner's Frozen Kirin was a nice surprise. We weren't sure what to expect, but they did something with the foam because that was the frozen part of it. It's light and airy, but also icy. Even though I only like sampling a bit of my partner's drink most of the time, I found it quite delicious.
Now for our meal! The Chicken Kaarage as appetizer. They did their Kaarage quite nicely. These chicken pieces were sorta thin, but that meant having more surface area for the batter to grab onto. The outer layer came out nice and crispy, but the chicken retained it's moisture. These were some good size, juicy chicken pieces. The aioli it came with paired nicely too - added a pleasant, tangy taste. Next, the Gyudon. It's not usually the first thing I go for because I'm not that big of a meat eater, but it was a popular menu item on their Yelp page, so we grabbed one to try. No regrets on it either. The Gyudon was a good size. We opted for brown rice and it came topped with some ginger, onions, an egg, some seaweed, and some thinly sliced beef. This bowl of rice was saucy. Even after mixing everything together, there was still a bit of sauce pooled on the bottom. This was a delicious rice bowl, but quite filling. The ginger pieces was a nice mix to the rice bowl. It was strong, and helped cut the sauce and flavor a bit. But I have to say the Champignon Pasta was my favorite between the two main entrees. The pasta was perfectly cooked to al dente. I think they pan-fried it at the end when they mix all the ingredients together, so you even get some bits of crunchy pasta that were pan-fried. The dish itself looked quite simple, but it turned out delicious! It's most likely from the garlic butter. There's a bit of mushroom varieties in there (though I think I could have used more). The seaweed and bits of sesame seed added some nice texture. My partner said the parmesan really tied everything together, but even though I don't eat cheese, I thought it was still delicious as is.
I really enjoyed my meal here and I'm glad there wasn't a wait here during a Saturday lunch hour. My thought is that their menu items isn't anything new, but whatever they have on their menu are made really well. Everything we had was fantastic. Service was really kind. I'm hoping to try some onigiri or a different pasta next time!
