Where to Eat the Best Soft Shell Crabs in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This CBD comfort food institution always has a soft shell platter on the menu, and you can choose to have just one or double it up. Be sure to save room after trying the seafood gumbo, one of the best in town." - Clair Lorell

Great staff unfortunately my food experiences was as pleasant. First time visiting this place and I really wanted jerk chicken but I also wanted to try the ox tails. So the waitress recommended the combo. Unfortunately when I received it the chicken was curry so I was hurt. The biggest L was the ox tails. Idk if they forgot the seasoning or what but this was the most bland peace of meat I had ever eaten. No one pinch of salt to taste. I hate because they were beautiful to the eyes. Thank God the curry chicken was good for the meal would have been an entire bust! 3 stars o my for the atmosphere.

Came here for lunch with my students, and I must say the service was terrible. We been as a school preordered and put a number on what was needed and still things were delayed. Idk if it’s because it was a large party or what. But I definitely would not come back here or recommend it. I do know that the presentation of the food was nice from what I saw, but the taste I’m not sure.

We loved it so much we went back again the next morning for breakfast! Awesome servers and the food was simply perfect southern cooking. Amongst us we had, French toast, the Memphis burrito, chicken and waffles, cheese grits and the best bacon I ever had. Seriously, could not recommend it more.

The food was very good! Unique gravy but was still delicious. The service however was horrible. After 15 minutes of waiting I had to ask someone to take our order. I think the hostess took our order? We waited over 20 minutes for the meal to arrive. We ate and the. sat another 10 minutes until I asked for our check. The service is the only thing keeping us from going back.

I've been here twice with my coworkers for breakfast and mimosas. The staff is so kind and the food is terrific! I've tried the omelet and the chicken and waffles and loved them equally. Their mimosas are also quite generous- will definitely be back :)

5/5 food. 4/5 friendliness of staff. 1/5 service. They were either horribly understaffed, horribly disorganized, or both. Food took the better part of an hour to come out and everyone else was waiting too - a table of 7 near us walked out after waiting a good 45 minutes because they had someplace to be. When it finally did come they didn't bring silverware - when I asked she brought out plastic silverware and said they were almost done rolling the normal ones. All that said, we luckily weren't in any hurry so it didn't inconvenience us much, and the food was incredible. Our waitress was apologetic about the delays as well. If you have some time to burn, it's worth it. If you have somewhere to be though, I wouldn't risk it.

I came to Bon-Ton Cafe as it was recommended by a fellow guest at The Peabody Hotel. I eagerly anticipated my breakfast there as it was a favorite haunt of Elvis Presley's. I figured that it would be very good considering how long the Cafe has been in business. I was greatly disappointed! The service was sub-standard and slow. The waitress had to return to the table to re-take my order as she "misplaced" the original. When my order finally was presented at table-side, it was completely the wrong order. Nothing that I ordered was present. Thus, an additional delay was required as my order was prepared. Upon finally being served my order, the food was poorly prepared. The bacon was exceedingly hard and greasy, to the degree that it was inedible. The biscuits were literally falling apart and cold. And my scrambled eggs were not fully cooked. I instructed the waitress that my breakfast was not acceptable and that I wanted it prepared properly. I also asked to address the matter with the Manager; my legitimate complaint was met with deliberate indifference. I cannot recommend Bon-Ton Cafe. In fact, the opposite is true. I must caution others to not waste time nor money in this place. For it is simply not good. It is, in fact, very bad!

Great breakfast. Open, comfortable, clean, spacious restaurant, cool older historic space. Food was delicious and the staff was very nice. Highly recommend for a solid old school breakfast downtown.
