Korean Fried Chicken Juggernaut Bonchon Will Open in Uptown and Dinkytown - Eater Twin Cities

"Two buildings that once housed Italian joints—the Uptown Davanni’s and Dinkytown’s Vescio’s which closed in February after 60 years of business—are to become the newest outposts of Bonchon, a Korean fried chicken restaurant. Bonchon, a casual chain originating in South Korea, serves a variety of Korean items but notorious for chicken wings coated in a sticky soy glaze. According to the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal, the Uptown location is slated to open in July with the 3,200 square foot Dinkytown spot following soon after in the late summer. Visitors can expect extra crispy fried chicken—it’s the double-fried approach that gives the chicken its signature Korean style—alongside Korean staples like bibimbap." - Cinnamon Janzer

Google
Tried Bonchon at Dinkytown the other day and overall I’d give it a solid 4/5! 😋 The bulgogi cheesy rice (I forgot the exact name.lol) was so satisfying. It’s warm, flavorful, and cheesy in just the right way. Definitely something I’d come back for. But the surprise star for me? The kimchi! I’ve never really been into it before, but their version changed my mind. It had just the right balance of tangy and spicy. it kinda made me want to start eating kimchi more regularly 👀🔥 Service was decent, the vibe was chill, and it’s a good spot if you’re craving Korean comfort food without going too far from U campus. Will probably swing by again to try more from the menu!

Hard not to like this place or the food! Bonchon is probably one of my favorite restaurants, no lie! They have one of the best chicken wings and many different Korean dishes, spicy or not they have amazing variety! The restaurant itself plays K-Pop music which is... music to my ears! I love it and so might you, please give them a try!

Google
This place has some really delicious Korean fast food. I really loved the small menu and the taste of the food. They have some nice lunch combos options to choose from. The ambiance is nice for casual dining with friends. This place has one of the best fries I ever had. The fries portion size is huge! so make sure you have a partner to share you fries. The food is fresh and very delicious! The prices are slightly higher. Overall a highly recommended and a must try place. The chicken is just the best!

Google
Got food delivered to work. They have generous portions. I ordered the Fried Rice with Bulgogi (beef) Price is decent, $11.95 for just the rice and up charge for meat. Flavor is good, not to salty. A little on the oily side but overall pretty tasty. I recommend a try. They got a decent variety.

Google
I was super impressed with the spicy fried chicken and crazy crispy fries. Other offerings were good but not particularly special. The atmosphere was very quiet, though I'm not a huge fan of its precise location. I'm grateful to have been shown this by a friend.

Google
Let me start off by saying that I wish there were half star options. I save my 5 star ratings for food that blows my mind because it is so good. The food here is delicious! 4.5 stars would be my rating. The place is clean and the service is really good. Nice atmosphere. My husband has high standards with his Korean food and he absolutely loved it. Highly recommend the food and will be coming back for sure!

Google
I placed an order for pickup. The entire order was a disaster. I asked for regular fries and they gave seasoned. I ordered a Pepsi with my food they gave me a Coke and didn't tell me so I went back and he said we don't have Pepsi so I stated I don't drink Coke can I get something else he said let's see what we have I walk over it's about 20 Pepsi 's in the cooler 😡. Then I paid for extra egg in my fried rice and didn't have any eggs at all. I hated the taste it tasted old. The Maple Grove location is so much better. I do not like this dinky town location, it's to expensive to be nasty

Google
We actually ate here on Christmas Eve because we were from out of town and we were waiting for a flight. Thank god they were open as understandably a lot of places were closed. I've never eaten at one of these before and I was pleasantly surprised and we'll go back again. Good service, clean, and a lot of variety.

Yelp
I love this restaurant so much. I highly recommend it for anyone in the area and it is so cheap for the amount of food you can get.
google avatar

Yelp
Every time I come here, the food is phenomenal. All you need to do is order appetizers so you can have multiple things to eat from the food is so delicious.

Yelp
Located conveniently in dinky town where students can have easy access to some crispy chicken. Used to crave it when it was not in town but now that it's everywhere... you tend not to crave so much unless on a rainy day. My first ever impression of Bonchon is the crispiness and crunchiness of the batter. One of a kind. The soy flavor is salty which goes well with white rice. The spicy flavor... it's spicy band also goes well with rice. When Bonchon first opened, loved the big size of the drums and wings which makes it worth the price. Now, the size are inconsistent. They should be the same size. Inflation can make the quality go down a lot. Now the portion Vs. Price isn't worth it as much. Still love the taste, so maybe on some rainy days.

Yelp
I've been to Bonchon so many times in different places but this location is the WORST. Our chicken wings barely had sauces and the sever was very rude. We had to ask him for drink refills and he was not nice at all when he was responding. Server was also touching a dog and then serving foods without cleaning in the store. Also, we had to wait so long to get our bills because the server was busy talking with his friends. Not only that food was bad, but the service was also horrible. Waste of money, worst experience so far.

Yelp
These wings had no sauce what so every worst wings ive every had . They were suppose to be the soy garlic .

Yelp
The best French fried. Friend Chicken is tasty! Will be back soon. The inside is spacious, clean, well designed. Stuff is friendly. Food is served quickly. Price is reasonable.

Yelp
First time to this place, the food is as good as I expected. The spicy chicken is hot. And the BBQ is mild. Loved both. We will do this again.. as should you
google avatar

Yelp
Just get the darn wangs with soy/garlic sauce. You won't be disappointed. Eat, pray and eat again.

Yelp
Basically Bonchon is the only place you could get Korean Fried Chicken in the Twin Cities and I was pretty excited when it opened. Now I believe there are 3 Bonchon locations in MN, Dinkytown (here), Uptown and at the Mall of America. For me, the fried chicken at this location is 4/5 if you get the drumsticks or boneless wings with the spicy sauce (which btw in my opinion is not spicy, and I love spicy food). Everything else on the menu I would recommend you to go somewhere else and is mediocre. Due to covid and wanting to have my Korean fried chicken with some beer at home, I've only done take out a couple of times so I can't say much on the service. It is a franchise and I've been to other locations that I like more but overall they're all pretty much the same or very similar.

Yelp
When our Son lived in Alexandria, VA he got me addicted to Korean fried chicken wings at Chi Mic. Of course since Gras moved back to MPLS it's all I ever crave, so for Mother's Day he brought me the Soy Garlic wings at Bonchon. Pickled radish, white rice and the wings, so good!! The wings are seriously like a fine pastry! There is something slightly chain like, but so very awesome!!
google avatar

Heather K.

Yelp
I'm not a huge fan of fried chicken but Bonchon definitely had super crispy skin! It was cooked well, still juicy. I don't eat much of the skin, but that's definitely where all the flavor is. I recommend spicy over the soy garlic. The spicy is more of a mild, but I enjoyed the flavor more. The chicken comes with one side which was either radish or something else. The rice cakes came with some fish cakes which was fine. I didn't try the baos but it looked a bit thin with a lot of slaw at ~$9. It's located in Dinkytown next to the super busy Insomnia and some pub. So you may have to circle around a few times for street parking or park further away. During COVID, the restaurant is currently social distancing, staff wearing mask and one was wearing gloves. There was only one waitress/hostess and everyone else was kitchen staff. It was pretty busy because they have so many to go orders, but she was attentive and friendly! They are only like six tables so I guess limited capacity is enforced.

Yelp
Fire!!! And better then a lot of restaurants you gotta believe it when you try it... I really love this place but can be a lil spendy
google avatar

Ethan P.

Yelp
This place is SO GOOD! We came here with friends to try it out and it's some of the best chicken wings I've ever had. It's a little spendy at 20$ for a small meal but the quality is worth it. Waitstaff are very nice and the food was made fast! 100% will be returning

Yelp
Bonchon was alright. I have had amazing Korean wings when I was in Asia so didn't have too high of expectations for Bonchon. I was excited to try it though since it had been on my list and I never seem to make the effort to come to Uptown to try it. Apparently it recently opened in Dinkytown and also expanded to the Mall of America too so it must be doing well as a business franchise. The space is clean, ambiance is nice, and staff is friendly. Menu was 80/20 Korean to Japanese dishes. It was colorful and pretty simple to read and understand. Ordered - Small Wings, soy and spicy (3.5/5). Pretty good. The skin is crispy and I was hungry to get my hands on them. It was a little too salty though to my liking and I thought there wasn't too much meat to the bones to help balance the saltiness. Ordering some white rice may be something I do next time since that may be a good combination. - Chicken Katsu (2/5). Not tasty especially with the mayo sauce drizzled over it. I guess I had better in Japan so going back to this was difficult. It was not impressive. I would try Bonchon again since it takes our favorite KFC/Popeyes/Canes experience and blend it with Asian spices and flavors. Enjoy ~

Yelp
We had the steam pork buns, 10 piece drums (spicy), seasoned fries, udon (plain) all of it was great and fresh. Definitely going back.
google avatar

George G.

Yelp
These wings SLAP! BUT why do we get such a puny little amount of sauce??? Order threw Uber eats and it came quick and I'm no time at all. The amount of sauce they give you if a slap in the face.

Carla S.

Yelp
Usually LOVE this place but I order lunch today and i was definitely disappointed . My order was wrong and my Katsu was burnt.
google avatar

Gabi S.

Yelp
So glad I stopped in! I did not expect the atmosphere from the outside appearance, but it's oddly nice inside. Honestly the menu looked soo good and I'm sad I stopped in for a short, light lunch. Two of us split the tacos and salmon avo ball - both good! I would probably prefer a different type of tortilla for the tacos, something that suits the Korean flavors better, but I loved the sweet spicy flavoring. The salmon avo ball was delicious, but a bit rich for a full meal. I'll definitely be stopping back in for a happy hour during the week and to try the wings.

Yelp
My hubby was craving korean fried wings so I decided to try bonchon. I ordered the soy garlic wings and spicy half and half as well as the steamed shrimp shumai. The chicken wings were good. Not as good as the kfc (koream fried chicken) I've had in Korea though. It was super crispy and flavorful, all the way into the meat, and the meat was tender and juicy. I did pick up because of covid and the order took a little over 20mins to come out so make sure you order online beforehand. You can't set the time you want to pick it up either but yelp makes it easy to order and pay online. I ordered their shrimp shumai because I missed dimsum and many reviews said it was good..but they said the FRIED shrimp shumai was good and I ordered STEAMED. Wanted to be healthy and you know how that goes. When you want to enjoy food you just have to enjoy it. Do not get steamed food at a fried restaurant! It just doesn't make sense and I will remember that for next time. It was just watery and the only flavor it had was the dijon mustard squirted on top. Maybe I'll try here again..

Susana G.

Yelp
if your looking for a place to eat i would 100% recommend this place the food is wonderful they have a goo variety of food i love the chicken katsu and garlic chicken. the workers are also very nice service is fast and the atmosphere is very chill and pleasant.

Yelp
Super tasty Korean-fried chicken! I've had both boneless and regular, and I think the regular in-bone is slightly tastier. But both are really good!
google avatar

Yelp
Rating two bonchon's seems excessive. This one is different from the one in Eagan... I know I hate my self too for writing this. Its smaller, the service is great. And I thoroughly enjoy the lunch deals, the beer on they have. Its fast food at Asian expectations. I was tired of eating chicken. I got the udon. It comes in a large bowl and is hot af. And it was good by the standard of an asian restaurant in america good. Not by the standard of an average soup in asia good. But its hot af, right? I knew the wide surface area of the top was going to cool it down and make it unpalatable. So I scarf it down, slurping loudly all the way. Its the way to go. Fortunately only another korean family is there so I dont feel self conscious. In about 15 min from arrival an empty bowl is in front of me, next to an empty beer. My parking is minutes from expiring even though i just put $4 in the meter. I pay quickly and leave. This is what I love about asian eateries. You sit you eat you pay you leave. The whole ceremony about going to a restaurant doesnt apply. But as opposed to fast food, its actually good. Or good enough. And man I miss that about living in China. I hear the chicken's good here too. Now I expect to hear back from a Bonchon representative shortly.

Yelp
I'm the first to review this place, so I hope other people catch on quickly that it's now open, and rave about it- This is mostly about the chicken. I tried the MOA location just the previous night (judge me, hard), and thought it was insanely good. So, being in Dinkytown, I double-dipped for a second round the next day, and got boneless wings, instead. Yeah, this was a huge mistake. The "Wing street" boneless wings from The hut, tasted better than these, only Bonchon is pricier. Let me add: I got a to-go order, so there is that, but these tasted way different than their actual chicken wings. If you go here, I suggest eating your food at the restaurant, and skipping the boneless wings. The coleslaw and kimchi are really good (mix them together!), and the staff were friendly.

Yelp
This was my first time at Bonchon and I'll definitely be back! We ordered a small serving of bone-in wings (half spicy, half soy garlic), Korean bulgogi tacos, and the fried tofu bibimbap. Im usually a boneless wing kinda gal but I read other reviews telling me to opt for the bone-in. I'm glad I did! The skin was so crispy and flavorful but the sauce didn't make a huge mess. The chicken was tender enough that the bones were super easy to remove. It also came with a side of pickled radish which was super flavorful contrary to it's bland appearance. At $10-ish for 10 wings, i thought that this was a relatively good deal, and the perfect size to split & still be able to try more. Not pictured were the Korean bulgogi tacos and the Bibimbap. The tacos were delicious! The meat was flavorful and they were loaded with sauce which is always a plus for me. They were about $10 for three good sized tacos. The Bibimbap was the flop of the meal. Still tasty, but the fried tofu had little seasoning, and was soggy compared to the crispy wings. It just seemed like there were bigger stars on the menu, and it was about the same price as the other items. As far as atmosphere goes, the place was clean and nice and quite small. The wait staff was fine, and our food came very quickly (probably about 5-10 minutes after ordering) for 5 p.m. On a Saturday night. Definitely check this place out!

Yelp
We love KFC(Korean fried chicken). Ordered online to be picked up after I got off of work and set the pickup time at 210pm. Got a message at 150 that said order ready to be picked up? What? So why order ahead of time when they are going to make it ASAP? Strike one. Got to the place and there was no one at the front counter. I saw my food sitting behind the counter but there was no one around. After about 15 mins someone came from the back and I got my order. Food was ok just the am waiting and the fact that once I brought it home it was cold. Strike two and three! This location is in dinkytown and cater to the u of m students so I am guessing customer service isn't what they care about. Will not be coming back to this location, the uptown one is better with customer service.

Yelp
So happy that Bonchon finally opened in Dinkytown. We've been going to the Uptown Bonchon (which has really great late night hours on the weekend, open til 2am!) and waited with bated breath for one to open closer to us. Hopefully it will expand its hours too once it gets going. Love their wings, and prefer bone-in for maximum flavor. Food lovers know this is always the better choice so none of that white boneless chicken nonsense for me. There are three flavors to choose from and they all deliver with balanced seasonings and amazing crunch but gimme a full plate of spicy wings with some chicken mu (pickled radish). I want the spicy spicy burn! Other dishes we like to order to round out our meal are the tteokboki and their excellent fries. Also their takoyaki and the chicken katsu, sometimes. Everything is good. Some things are excellent. Can't go wrong. Edit: Soooo, I think the local Bonchons have scaled back the heat on their spicy chicken. It's still excellent but I'm downgrading a star because of that. Super bummed. Thanks for nothing MN wimps, you know who you are. You can order the soy garlic or sweet crunch if you can't deal. They're both really awesome too. Leave the spicy alone! I want my face to be on fire.

Yelp
Bonchon stands for boner chonies cuz the first bite aroused me. I ordered the lunch special with drums and seasoned fries and it was soooo gooood!
google avatar

R G.

Yelp
The quality is not as good as Bonchon we tried in other states. Could be the quality and cleanliness of the technics of preparing and executing. We tried their locations in Uptown & MOA , same problems . Too bad, high expectations, because we like Bonchon Fried Chicken a lot.
google avatar

Lindsay L.

Yelp
Paid $11 for 3 pork buns and they were utterly disappointing! Pork belly was fatty and really no taste.. so sad because I wanted to like this place. Waste of money.

Lynnette L.

Yelp
This place is the best chicken is fire bonchon is by far the best chicken wing place I've been to in years even the dip was good
google avatar

Sam O.

Yelp
Wings are phenomenal! Great crunch and great sauce to go with it. The fried rice has a massive helping and my girlfriend got the Korean Beef tacos which were also really big. This place will last awhile in dinkytown if it keeps it up!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
It's a solid takeout place. All but one of the dishes were tasty. When not in the mood to cook, this should be on your list of places to order from.
google avatar

Len K.

Yelp
I honestly don't understand the negative reviews of this place. I think the food was fantastic! I had a Bul Dak and Korean Beef Tacos. The bul dak was a nice spice that gets spicer each bite you take (kind of like fire noodles). Good chicken, cheese, and rice cakes. My only recommendation is to add more rice cakes (we had about 6!) The Korean beef tacos had a very nice sauce on it that I've never, ever tasted before. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Ia K.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came for dinner and were excited to try the bulgogi and fried chicken. We also ordered the pork buns and seasoned fries. Everything was good except the bulgogi. The bulgogi was so disappointing. The meat was shredded and was overfilled with onions and scallions, not only that, it was was bland. Everything else was good though.
google avatar

Grisha B.

Yelp
The fried chicken was great, but the authentic Korean dishes were outstanding. I got the Bul Dak, which was insanely spicy and delicious. It would have been better if it were a little less spicy, but it was still great. Would definitely go back.
google avatar

Eve N.

Yelp
Was delicious! Got the combo wings and drumsticks. Soy garlic sauce was just right and the crispy skin was the best I've ever had. Pork buns are so soft and slightly spicy. Will definitely order from here again

L V.

Yelp
Flavor is better than last time. Last time was so bad I didn't even eat it as left overs. This time however, there were a couple issues. When you think Korean fried chicken, you think of double fried. This definitely felt single fried. Soggy, uncrisp chicken. Don't get me wrong. The taste is there and I don't expect crunchy goodness when I'm getting it delivered. However, i had to throw them into my air fryer. Also, last couple of times the wings were barely sauced that it lacked salt. This time around, I wanted extra sauce because of my previous experiences. It was still not enough. I don't know what happened. This place used to be amazing in the restaurant and in delivery and now it's so-so, hit or miss. Mostly miss these past three times. As for the delivery, they went to the wrong apartment building and were about to leave but saw me standing outside and realized it was my order. The guy also gave me a religious pamphlet. Like sure, you wanna spread the good news, go for it but not on the job when I'm just tryna eat some chicken. I did not like that one bit. Ps, fries still taste bomb even when soggy. Will also be tossing those into the air fryer.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Amazing food! Had it delivered through door dash and I was super impressed would definitely order from here again!
google avatar

Kathy V.

Yelp
The food was very good! Definitely try the wings! I would only come back for the wings though. Although the food was good, I feel like there's better options out there that's cheaper. Again, try the wings!
google avatar

Briant K.

Yelp
Was so good I went back the next day!!! Rice is a total dream come true!! bad Asian chick work in there too
google avatar

Ahnika J.

Yelp
Very few options for vegetarians and the noodles I had could have used more sauce. I was not impressed with the food, but the atmosphere was fun. My friend who eats meat loved her chicken and would definitely go back. The garlic fries were delicious!

Nathan W.

Yelp
Always love Bonchon. Such tasty chicken. Both the spicy and the soy garlic sauces are insanely delicious! Fries were piping hot and fresh which is key for me (nobody likes cold/soggy fries). Order was ready on time. Will definitely be back. If I had to pick one thing that could improve it'd be that not all Bonchon locations offer the same things. Example: Some have Bulgogi while others do not. Some have fries available in a combo, others just give the option for coke slaw/radish.

Charlie S.

Yelp
Have had bonchon in New York an DC. Love it so much. I was so happy to hear it is in MN. Unfortunately, the product here is nowhere near the same thing. We ordered boneless wings, as I have always done at other locations, and this is a step below Buffalo Wild Wings. The pot stickers were a bit better. Very disappointed, will not eat here again. Not sure how they can even call themselves Bonchon.
