The Best Fried Chicken in NYC | Eater NY

"This classic Korean fried chicken chain fries its chicken twice, and you can count on a crisp and slightly sweet crust, whether ordering the spicy version or one doused in soy garlic. Sides include kimchi coleslaw and pickled daikon radish, and the Parmesan-heaped french fries aren’t bad, either. There are multiple other locations, including in Brooklyn, Flushing, Union City, and Bayonne." - Robert Sietsema

I placed my order online and showed up at the time it told me to. When I arrived it took an extra 20 minutes. When I got my food it was missing an item that I had to go back and get. When I finally got to eat it, I realized I received the chicken buns but I ordered the bulgogi. Then when eating the fried chicken, all of the larger pieces were UNDERCOOKED! Everything was wrong. How can I get a refund? The “contact us” on the website keeps failing.

I am loving it here! The chicken and fries are spot on. Plus they have special promotions with the best price $9.99&10.99 now! The staff are so friendly as well, Ms Katy help me pick the sauce and it is awesome. 10% discount for health care workers! Highly recommend place for quick lunch!!!

Had an amazing experience at Bonchon thanks to Quan! He was incredibly sweet, attentive, and made sure everything was perfect from start to finish. Quan went above and beyond with his service — always checking in with a warm smile and making us feel genuinely welcomed. It’s rare to come across someone so kind and thoughtful. Big shoutout to Quan for making our visit extra special. Food was good as always. We’ll definitely be back!

First time here and wow—loved it! My boyfriend recommended we try the Soy Garlic wings, and they did not disappoint—crispy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. But what really made the experience special was the customer service. The gentleman who took our order was so kind and friendly. Even though they were a bit behind, he apologized for the wait and handled everything so professionally. His attitude and service made our visit truly worthwhile. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Fantastic Korean Chicken Experience! I had the pleasure of dining at BonChon 1st Ave, and it was truly an outstanding experience. From the moment I walked in, the warm and welcoming atmosphere made me feel right at home. The staff was incredibly attentive and helpful, guiding me through the menu with great recommendations. The food was absolutely phenomenal. I ordered a take on sweet (soy garlic) and (spicy) chicken tenders, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly balanced in flavors. The variety of side dishes that accompanied the meal added a delightful range of textures and flavors, making every bite exciting. I ordered the fries 🍟 with a side of coleslaw. I also appreciated the generous portion sizes, ensuring that you leave feeling full and satisfied. Overall, BonChon offers an authentic taste of Korea with exceptional service. Whether you're new to Korean cuisine or a longtime fan, this place is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back soon!

Bonchon, New York - 1st Avenue, is now our favorite place in Manhattan for lunch! The location is easily accessible and easy to find. The place is always very clean and organized, and the decor is world class! The staff is very, very friendly and helpful. I have been there about six times so far over the past month and their warm welcome has consistently made us feel like family coming home! The food! The food! The food! The food is amazing! Tastes good every day! Whoever the chef or chefs are, they need to be awarded gold medals! My favorite is the Korean chicken wings! I can never have enough! The prices are also very reasonable! Looking forward to my next visit. Keep up the great work guys!

I paid $4 for an upgrade to seasoned fries, my fries came plain and unseasoned. When I asked for a refund for the $4 since my fries were plain, I was told I could not be given a refund since I placed the order online. They could “add it on in the back” and give it back to me or give me the seasoning on the side. The seasonings on the side were chunky and did not coat the fries properly at all. Probably because the fries should be hot and fresh when the seasoning is added… The sauce for the Korean fried chicken was HORRIBLE, the soy garlic sauce was inedible with how salty it was. It had way too much soy, not enough garlic. If you think Chipotle is knock off Mexican food, trust me that Bonchon is worse than that for Korean fried chicken. I would never order from this place again if I’m craving Korean fried chicken. Mad for chicken is way better or any other place honestly… save your money and go somewhere else.

Yelp
Side note: Was here months ago as per most of my reviews. This is one of the many locations of this alright Korean fried chicken chain. Compared to some of the other larger locations such as on 32nd Street, this one's more takeout oriented it seems and less bar focused which matches the vibe of most of the fast food spots on this block/near Cooper Village and Stuytown. I had a newer dish offered from there back then; the grilled chicken rice bowl which was fine. This had some grilled chicken of course (with your choice of spice level) along with some carrots, a veggie mixture, and lettuce over rice. The spice level was nice but the chicken was unfortunately a bit overcooked but the spice level was good. The carrots unfortunately got a bit of that flavor also possibly from being next to the overcooked chicken. The best part of the bowl was probably the vegetable mixture which was a mix of grilled bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms which was honestly delicious. It made a decent meal but stick with the fried chicken if you go here like everyone else and there's better options otherwise near StuyTown. Upper 2 matching every other chain location.

Yelp
Relatively new (I think opened in the past year) addition to the chain near Cooper village. They've got an array of Korean inspired dishes but the go to is ofc the fried chicken. You order in stages selecting the flavor and side dishes (cole slaw or traditional Korean pickled radish). I chose the soy garlic as the person behind the counter said if was their signature - slightly but not overly sweet. Amazingly crispy and crunchy chicken even though it's got this sauce all over it. About $17 for 5 drumsticks - on the pricey side but really, really huge drumsticks and excellent quality. Relatively clean inside - no Korean workers but it's a chain so that not really indicative of much atp.

Yelp
Loved my Bonchon Oder! I ordered a Drumstick and wing combo 8 Wings and 4 Drums with the Korean BBQ Sauce! They were just how I like them sweet and crispy. I added my favorite edamame which I love that they have. The coleslaw was delicious and fresh. I was helped by the nice employee who was working hard. Actually her and her team were getting orders done. My wait felt a bit long but the music playing in the speakers soothed the wait, some nice Korean and Pop music. I definitely be back.

Yelp
Ordered online for pickup from this location- very convenient! We ordered the K-Meal for 4-6 people with 12 boneless and 6 drumsticks, with the Soy Garlic and Korean BBQ. For sides, the seasoned fries (totally worth the $2 extra) and white rice. Pick up was very quick and easy- just head to the counter, pick up the order, and voila. The boneless chicken was good- nice and crispy, and flavorful too. The drumsticks were huge- while the skin/breading was really good, the actual chicken meat was pretty flavorless. I'll stick with the boneless next time and skip the drumsticks

Yelp
This was absolutely disgusting! Raw chicken and hard rice?! I paid good money for this?! So dissatisfied and will NEVER recommend this place. #Food #Restaurant #Chicken #Rice #Disappointment #BadExperience

Yelp
I've been pasting by this place the longest when I saw that they were under construction to set up shop. I was really rooting for them and couldn't wait for them to open up a location near me. Though when I finally got to dine here, I was completely disappointed. I came here to take my order to go. Ordered 4 drums and 6 wings. Didn't think much but when I got home, I noticed 2 of my drums were missing. Like wtffff....how hard is it to put in the right amount. I was so annoyed. These chicken are not cheap and I wanted the portion I asked for. At this rate, I don't even want to go back. The fact that they make me feel insecure ordering is enough to not make me want to come back. What makes it worst is that they actually have a person there to check the order. I saw him standing there putting the order together and placing it in the bag.

Yelp
This is not bonchon. We ordered the group meal of thighs and boneless and the chicken was so gross we couldn't eat more than two bites. The thighs were so badly breaded, no crunch and tasted completely bland. Even the look was off (see picture). The boneless was dry and tasteless. They were supposed to be soy garlic but instead they tasted weird and terrible. Never again and I wish we could get our money back since it completely ruined our meal and we couldn't eat more than two bites. I guess the good news is it's better for our waist line?

Yelp
fast casual sitdown place serving a variety of dishes with Korean style fried chicken dishes and more. clean brightly lit space with a good amount of seatings. stopped here to order dinner for takeout and ordered a fried chicken bonchon bowl--a white rice topped with veggies and fried chicken with a dipping sauce. have to say--the food hit the spot. good amount of food, crispy fried chicken, and all the flavors work well together. ordering was simple. staff were chill. Bonchon does chicken right, too.

Yelp
BRANCH: New York - 1st Ave, 367 First Ave. A Huge Shout Out To: Kathy Gen. Mgr. FOOD: My first taste of the wings was at the 5th Ave location near my job. Since, I was working at the 1st Ave Branch one Friday I decided to eat in. The flavor did not disappoint. I had the roasted garlic wings and the pot roasted dumplings. When I say it was well cooked, tender and crunchy - it was. Did I say the flavor was on point?? A party was in my mouth. SERVICE: The receptionist/cashier was super polite and never got agitated when asked to give more details. That day, they had a huge online order that was time consuming, and she told me that the wait would be long. I did not mind. She kept coming to my seat when she got a break from the register to keep me update. However, Kathy the GM, was the rock start. She came over and kept apologizing as well. I told her I understood. When my order came, a server brought me drinks and their top tier donut twist (I did not order this!). He promptly told me it was for my wait time!!! I was floored. Kathy: thanks a million to you and your staff. AMBIANCE: The usual signature look of the brand, and it was well clean!

Yelp
It's BonChon - so chicken was delicious as usual. Nothing special to mention when compared to other BonChons. It's cleaner as it was recently opened

M. S.

Yelp
Food was good, but when I went to this location the second time, the young caucasian girl at the register kept referencing me as "Big Man" which confused the hell out of me, because I've never even seen or even met this young g woman before for her to be comfortable calling me that. Least to say I WAS embarrassed, but kept a smile on my face. Again, the food was good, but an experience like this is what would make me go elsewhere to eat.

Yelp
The drumstick are huge! The box 1 is so good! Even though I wait for like half hour for the drumstick to be ready and it's worth it

Yelp
Just tried Bonchon. Had the Korean Tacos with the spicy chicken. They were good. A little messy, but that's what's napkins are for. Service was excellent. Staff were friendly and polite. I will return!!

Yelp
i guess not all bonchons are made equal since i've definitely been to better locations. the cleanliness and interior atmosphere feels a messy so i don't recommend dining in. the wings were alright but not as flavorful as i remember from other locations. the upside is they are open later than bbq chicken and pelicana so it's an option for late night chicken in ktown

M B.

Yelp
Not like the one in K town. Soy garlic chicken doesn't taste soy garlic so much coating too. Will never go back on this location

Stun N.

Yelp
UCH is the best I can do. Mostly rice in the bowl, too long of a wait time & tasted like sh*t. STAY AWAY.

Yelp
Tl;dr: Worst korean fried chicken franchise for a reason, management should reconsider hiring choices or a communication system as I have experienced two wrong orders in two separate occasion. I love Korean fried chicken, and like to think that I know a thing or two about it. In North America, the main franchises are BonChon and BBQ Chicken with lots of other smaller local restaurants. These two franchises originated in Korea with BonChon being one of the oldest, if not the oldest chain franchise. In terms of quality, BonChon has been known as the bottom-tier franchise in the current market in Korea for good reason - horrible service and unkind pricing. (BBQ is a couple of blocks away near Baruch college and deserves much more love than this franchise) It seems that this culture has followed to their North American franchise. I have visited this location twice - once on their opening day and another just today. The first time I visited, I was happy that there was a KFC shop near me, and placed an order of wings. They were ok - half soggy when I arrived home, and the sauce felt average at best but was bad value considering the $22 for 12 sad pieces of wings and a drink. While I was waiting for the order though, a customer came in saying she had a wrong order but didn't think much of it. The second time I visited this location, I received a wrong order myself and was met with an indifferent attitude, and that my order will be out soon. There were people working with their laptops on some of the dine-in tables who I assume to be the management/owners. The employees told them that I was simply waiting for my order, but didn't mention that I received a wrong order. I didn't say anything because I knew I wasn't coming back to this location and would rather take my business to BBQ chicken - where the chicken is also ok, but the employees give excellent service when they notice even a slight delay. All in all, for a location with a team of 14 or so kitchen staff and 3-4 front of house, the quality of food was ok while the service I received was pretty terrible. I can't wait for other KFC franchises to come into the US, as BonChon is really not cutting it for myself - franchises like BBQ, BHC, and Pelicana would encourage healthy competition for a stagnant franchise like BonChon.

Yelp
Delicious Korean fried chicken, so happy a spot opened in my neighborhood! Now I don't need to go all the way to ktown when I crave some kfc.

Jenn T.

Yelp
Just had my first meal from this location. When you walk into the restaurant the aroma of everything cooking makes you want to order everything off the menu. I ordered garlic soy wings, seasoned fries, pot stickers and Korean donuts. Everything was DELISH!!! Myrah took my order and she was professional and friendly. When she handed me the order, it was all correct. This will be my go-to for wings and more. I will also be trying additional items on the menu. This restaurant is a nice addition to the neighborhood.

Lapalma G.

Yelp
fvcklng disgusting chicken ordered the combo and fried rice, everything was flat and disgusting
