Under-the-Radar New Restaurants to Check Out in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Korean street food specialist Bonggu Tteokbokki just opened in Koreatown. Headlining the menu are long, chewy, and cylindrical rice cakes served in a variety of sauces and with various accompaniments like fish cakes and cheese. For variety, side dishes like gimbap made with fried tofu skin and blood sausages are also on hand." - Cathy Chaplin

Review from someone not fluent in Korean food. This one is too modern as you order on the tablet. The plates arrived in a very template-like appearance. None were piping hot but at a just ready to swallow temperature. Most dishes are red but not spicy. Only designated dishes are spicy. Prices are $10 to $18 so good for everyone. During a lunch visit on a Sat I felt like I was the only adult in the dining hall. 3 dishes out of the five on my table was fish cake based- may it be thin tortillas of fish paste folded into shapes or hot dogs of fish cake. The signature rice dough in log shape was soft and just chewy enough. The logs are good. The sauce was red but mostly sweet and just a red spicy you could barely tell. But you will need to bathe the logs in sauce to get any taste. The logs are bland at best with no taste character but not sticky to my surprise. Good chew.

The food was so delicious here! I recommend the milk with your meal. Helps a lot if you can’t handle spice. But if you want something sweet after you finish your meal I recommend this! The tempura shrimp was good. And the fish cakes were to die for! I’m from out of town and I’ll come back!

Went here on two different occasions, and service was great for both (granted, I went during weekday lunchtime, it can get busy during weekends). I got their Wheat Noodle (쫄면), which with fresh veggies, a hard boiled egg, chewy plump noodles with sweet/slightly spicy, and for roughly $13, a steal. I added tempura sweet potato, which was crisp and light. On another day, I got the Fishcake Udon (꼬치어묵우동). Which was tasty, simple, direct. Would recommend for simple Korean street food for lunch!!!

I visited for lunch and went in due to the grand opening sign outside. I was met by friendly staff and a clean and organized dining room. I was given instructions on how to order on the tablet and my food came out so quickly. I also received the most delicious fish cake soup I have ever had. Finished the meal with a homemade strawberry milk. I recommend to anyone and everyone.

Located on West 8th Street in Koreatown, Bonggu Tteokbokki is a delightful spot that offers a unique twist on traditional Korean street food. I ordered the Bonggu GaRae, which features four pieces of GaRae Tteok and three pieces of fish cake, all drenched in Bonggu’s Special Original Sauce. This dish was recommended by the server as the least spicy option, and I was grateful for the guidance. The tteok, or rice cakes, were delightfully soft and perfectly chewy, absorbing the sauce's spicy sweet flavor beautifully. The sauce itself was a standout rich, flavorful, and just the right amount of heat to keep things interesting without overwhelming my palate. I also opted to add wide glass noodles, which complemented the dish well, adding a nice texture and heartiness. From the tempura menu, I couldn't resist ordering the Tempura Shrimp, which came with two perfectly fried pieces. The shrimp were crispy on the outside while remaining tender and juicy inside, making for a delicious contrast with the tteokbokki. To wash everything down, I ordered the homemade strawberry milk. It was reminiscent of a thick strawberry milkshake, rich and creamy, which was a perfect counterbalance to the spice of the meal. It added a refreshing sweetness that rounded out the experience. One of the highlights of my visit was the service. The server was incredibly attentive and helpful, ensuring that I had everything we needed throughout the meal. She was knowledgeable about the menu, providing excellent recommendations that enhanced my dining experience. Definitely recommend

So good! We stopped here after eating dinner out of curiosity and still ordered so much, and literally everything we got was amazing. Tteokbokki, fish cakes, soon dae, and fried combination. Tasted like back in Korea, which is rare even in LA. The interior vibe was very intentional and curated as well, with nostalgic vibes. The owner/server was so nice and gentle, and treated us to his homemade strawberry milk which was epic. Definitely will be back.

Came here on Saturday with my significant other, we had placed an order on their website and drove to their location. Upon arriving we discovered that our order had not been received (error with their system) we discussed with the manager and was able to work things out. As an apology for the mix up he gave us Korean strawberry milk on the house which was so good! We promptly got our food and upon arriving home everything tasted perfect. My all time favorite was their mixed Bum Buck (모듬봄벅) especially their blood sausage(순대) that had glass noodle inside and paired perfectly with their sweet ad tangy sauce! Their fried tofu roll (유부롤) was flavorful, their fried tofu kimbap (유부꼬마김밥) had a nice snap and tasted fresh, lastly their udon (우동) and tteokbokki (똑볶이) was nice and bouncy and tasted better with their respective sauce! I definitely recommend this spot and will be looking forward to come back again!
