The 38 Essential Restaurants in Montreal

"The industrial Saint-Henri portrayed in Gabrielle Roy’s 1945 novel Bonheur d’Occasion (The Tin Flute) has, for the most part, faded into history, but this establishment, which borrows its name, feels rooted in the neighborhood of today. A newcomer to Notre-Dame Street’s culinary scene and dubbed one of Canada’s Best New Restaurants by Air Canada’s EnRoute, it is the brainchild of chef Philippe Gauthier, previously of Bouillon Bilk and Butterblume. Expect a menu composed of fresh, seasonal ingredients, with recent dishes including raw swordfish with kohlrabi and trout caviar, leeks with walnuts and bleu d’Elizabeth, and guinea fowl with root veggies, alongside a highly praised maple mille-feuille made with clover cream. Note: Valerie Silva was on the nomination panel for the 2023 Canada’s Best New Restaurants list." - Valerie Silva

Montreal’s Upcoming Restaurant and Bar Openings, Fall 2018 | Eater Montreal

"I’m anticipating Broken Coconut as an underground whisky bar from Charles Manceau that follows the den-like tasting and cocktail format he explored with Clandestino, but with a focus on whisky tastings and cocktails; it’s slated for late September under the new Venice at 4001 Notre-Dame West in St-Henri." - Tim Forster

Double-Opening Brings Venice and Casual Bar Paper Plane to St-Henri | Eater Montreal

"On Notre-Dame West in St-Henri, I found a new Venice at 4001 Notre-Dame W occupying the former Ludger corner on du Couvent; it will serve lunch, dinner and brunch and follows the menus of the original Old Montreal and Beaver Hall locations with health-conscious, Californian-leaning fare like avocado toast, salads, fusion tacos and Hawaiian poke bowls. Inside it has a beachy vibe — bright tones, surfboards and skateboards — evocative of Venice Beach in Los Angeles, and a new mural on du Couvent has been painted over Ludger’s artwork, a move that caused a minor stir because the previous mural featured architect Ludger Lemieux (known for designs like the Atwater Market) and had doubled as branding for the former restaurant. It’s open 5–11 p.m. this week and will be 11 a.m.–11 p.m. daily starting next week." - Tim Forster

We went for MtlaTable so we had a set menu of $65 for 4 courses. The service was excellent! For the food, we tried most of the choices on the menu and everything was very good. The caramelized onions with beef and celery puree was my favorite. The only thing was that we were seated quite close to other tables when there seemed to be more quieter spots for a couple. The price-quality was good, we came out of the restaurant stuffed

Came here on the first day of MTL à Table. The food was good, but the portions were tiny. We actually had to grab a second meal afterward. • Oyster: fresh, but there was only one… not half a dozen like most places. • Salad (Jerusalem artichokes, smoked almonds, Brussels sprouts, carmine): nice maple aroma, almonds were fragrant. • Main: I had Arctic char — light lemony sauce, really liked it. My friend’s beef chuck was very tender. • Desserts: both the royale cake and mille-feuille were great.

I am totally in love with this spot - a happy coincidence I got to try during Montreal à Table and have tried again since and it’s probably one of my new favourites spots in the city. Great food, amazing quality and researched ingredients, the staff is super friendly and makes you feel right at home and the atmosphere is cozy, refined but not pretentious and overall I’m always having a good time as soon as I’m stepping inside. 10/10 must try!

We went as a group of four on a Wednesday night. We had a reservation, but it wasn’t really necessary since the restaurant wasn’t full. The atmosphere is great and the staff is super friendly. The food is absolutely delicious — special shoutout to the tuna tataki and the duck. The portions are a bit small for the price, but the quality more than makes up for it. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!

Holy hell these guys are working hard to bring you amazing food that’s seasonal, accessible, and exciting. Every week they’re doing a new tasting menu with a different theme for $80. Wow. Finest ingredients, masterful technique, every bite of every dish was amazing. Highly recommend.

I read pretty good reviews about bonheur d’occasion so I went to try their “Menu degustation” as a group of 5 we were awkwardly seated at the entrance of the restaurant the place is better for a smaller group. The food was pretty good for some of the plates and just lame for the others and the wine pairing not up to the level. I found the global experience pretty over priced!

Wow, what a culinary experience! We had the tasting menu and every dish was so we'll balanced with flavors and fresh ingredients. We really enjoyed every dish and had great wines paired with every course. My favorite dish was the japenese sweet potato with a butter sauce and escargot (chef's kiss)! All the meats were cooked to perfection. We will certainly be back soon. Merci beaucoup!

We went for dinner this week and we do not recommend this restaurant at all. We took the 5 course tasting menu and it was dissapointing. The first course with heirloom tomatoes and a tasty sauce was promising but we went downhill after that. Second course with mussels and raw carrots. Very hard to eat and this dish needed cooked carrots. Third course agnolotti, very bland and no taste. Fourth course chicken sausage. We could not eat it and we told the server. How can you serve chicken sausage in a tasting menu. We do not recommend this restaurant at all and cannot understand some positive reviews.

Yelp
We loved this restaurant for lunch the first time we visited, and decided to try them for dinner because they're really unique and have their own style, and the price/performance ratio and portion sizes are quite impressive! Chicken Liver. I thought it was going to be cubes of fried chicken livers, but when I got here, it turned out to be chicken liver mousse, which was a bit fishy, like the chicken liver mousse I've had before, and it's good with a little strawberry sauce, so it's not too greasy, and covers up the fishy flavor of the chicken livers. Kale with spores. I've ordered this dish every time I've been to a white man's dinner, and I've had a lot of combinations, but this one is sweet and sour, and it's served with sautéed mushrooms, with a sauce underneath, and crunchy almonds, and it's got a lot of salt, sweetness, caramelization, crunchiness, and mushrooms, and it's got a lot of flavor. Baked potato. Baked potatoes with fish roe? At first I was skeptical that it was a dark dish, but it turned out to be really delicious The fish roe popped in my mouth with the slightly sweet and caramelized potatoes, and it really went well together I'm kind of in love with the flavor I can't help but feel that chef knows how to innovate! Risotto. The special of the day was something I didn't expect, the chef used barley in the risotto, and paired it with a hot spring egg, morel mushrooms, and white truffles, all good ingredients. The barley was creamy and rich, but a little light. Slow-cooked smoked beef. This is the classic slow-cooked smoked beef flavor soft and flavorful with black olives and creamy corn puree yummy classic! Overall, this is a restaurant I'll be coming back to for fresh ingredients, niche and innovative flavors, and I'm happy with my stomach and the value for money is great

Yelp
While searching for restaurants, I came across this one, the name stuck with me. Not sure if it's an actual expression but I feel like it means a particular happiness that is specific to each situation... kinda poetic. Turns out the name is an homage to a Quebecois novel of the same name, about woking class people who live in st-henri, which is where the restaurant is located. We had pain au levain, it comes with butter and black garlic spread. The black garlic spread is amazing, so intense in flavor. Then we had Boudin, I love Boudin, might not be for everybody but it was good. Then we had the lamb chop on some sort of mash with reduction sauce, it was well balanced in flavor and textures. Then duck for two, reduction sauce and some roasted squash on the side which added a nice touch of sweetness. For dessert we had the mille feuille and the royal hazelnut cake, the hazelnut cake was my favorite, intense chocolatey and just sweet enough. Loved the name, loved the food.

Yelp
Tucked away in St-Henri, this place is quite cozy and the service is great. A lot of the dishes are to be shared, and the portions are rather small. Overall, food is tasty.
