Bonita Taqueria & Rotisserie - Review - Marina - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Will TNT keep churning out new crime series season after season? Yes. Will San Francisco keep opening tasty if unoriginal Mexican restaurants until the end of time? Yes. And you know what? Sometimes we actually tune in to Bones, and sometimes we actually care to try another Mexican place, even if it’s not the most exciting spot in the city. Bonita is a TNT crime drama of a restaurant. The food is tasty, but there’s a little bit of a cheapness to it that makes it seem like it might not make it more than a few seasons. But we’ll enjoy it while it lasts, and even encourage other people to hop on the bandwagon. The setup is order at the counter, take a number, and wait for your food, which generally comes out pretty quickly. After that, you’ll grab a bar seat – the ones on the sidewalk are stellar for wasting a warm afternoon eating chips and drinking sangria and watching the Chestnut Street humans. Bonita’s food is a little hit or miss. The menu is pretty standard Mexican, with salads, tacos, burritos, bowls, and fajitas, plus quesadillas and sides. The carne asada, carnitas, and rotisserie chicken are all usually great, but the chicken can be kind of dry and the pastorcito is devastatingly salty. The portions are big, especially the bowls and awesome salads, and they have a strong take-out game as well. But sometimes stuff just doesn’t work out: orders get messed up, or your salad is mostly just bottom ends of romaine. This is TNT quality service. WE WANT AMC QUALITY. When we’re in the neighborhood, Bonita is a good option for a quick burrito and beer in a place that’s a little happier than Toma and a lot easier than the other Mexican options around. It’s definitely not going to win any awards, but Bonita knows how to satisfy its audience. Food Rundown Elote This is…not great. It’s generally over-spiced and over-limed. Stick with chips and salsa or guacamole and you’ll be much happier. Nor-Cal Bowl You’ve been to Chipotle, so you understand that sometimes it’s better to eat things in bowls than in wraps. Less mess, theoretically less carbs, except this guy has roasted potatoes in it and it’s bomb. La Campesina Ensalada We’ve used up the metaphors of what delicious sauces can make taste good (bike tires, cardboard, Umami Burger, etc.). I’ll go a step further: I would consider licking the cilantro dressing for this salad off the sidewalk. In the Tenderloin. It’s delicious crack. Also add the rotisserie chicken and you will be delighted. Street Tacos We are strong believers in the restorative and curative powers of salt. Tears, the ocean, and salt licks all work wonders for people. The smallish street tacos here are simple and great, but the pastorcito version is way too salty. Go with the carne asada or carnitas. Bonita Burrito Again, the carne asada is an excellent choice here. The Bonita burrito comes with all the extras, and it’s the second best burrito in the neighborhood." - Taylor Abrams

Where to Find the Best Roast Chicken in San Francisco - Eater SF

"Part taqueria and part rotisserie, Bonita has a Mexican bent on its Mary's free-range rotisserie chicken, which can be ordered at the counter as a half or whole chicken, or shredded into tacos, burritos, bowls, quesadillas, and more. You can eat it all there, but it's more comfortable to take it home to Netflix (or order it online)." - Eater Staff

Google
Very delicious food! The chicken was good quality and everything also fresh. Prices were fine. Atmosphere and service good for a fastfood restaurant. Thus 5*.

Google
I was pretty happy with my bowl. They have a small salad bar where you can take salsa and toppings. Server was very friendly. The portion was pretty big for the price. They also have vegetarian options if you’re looking for that.

Akshay B.

Google
I really like the breakfast at Bonita Taqueria. TLDR rare exceptional service, great value for money and yummy Mexican fare. I had the Mexican hash with chorizo. The mean was large and fed two of us. The service was exceptional. We asked whether we could get a side of tortillas and they gave us freshly made hot tortillas on the house. The salsas were also great with the Verde being my favorite

Reagan W.

Google
Yes!!! Tasty food! Tortilla soup! The best! Beans and rice burrito! Salsa, mild and hot. Ummmm……

Selma M.

Google
I visited Bonita Taqueria and ordered the Mexican street tacos, which come as a set of three – I chose the chicken option. They were very tasty, with fresh ingredients and perfectly warm, soft tortillas. The staff was super friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere had a great Latin vibe. It felt relaxed and comfortable – a really pleasant experience overall. Highly recommend if you’re in the Chestnut Street area and craving authentic, flavorful tacos in a laid-back setting!

Flawed B.

Google
Such HUGE portions. Pricing isn’t too bad. They have the best salsa bar! The best Mexican corn! My boyfriend got the fajitas and I got the fajita bowl! I’d highlight recommend this place! Staff was very very friendly as well :)

Rebecca R.

Google
Great service. We stopped here on a quick trip to the city. My friend ordered the nachos, they were incredible. The salsas are good too. Good place to get healthy food. Would come again if I was in the area. Employees are nice, I hope the owners treat them well. Restaurant is clean. A+

Google
Hidden gem Mexican spot - absolutely loved it! Stumbled upon this place completely by accident and wow, what a find! The vibe is perfect with great music that really sets the mood. The staff is super friendly and welcoming - they made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. Now let’s talk about the burrito - this thing was HUGE and absolutely delicious! I was seriously tempted to order a second one because it was so good, but there was no way I could have finished it. The portions here are no joke. Definitely a winner! This place is going straight to my favorites list. Highly recommend checking it out if you’re in the area!

Yelp
Great food, fast service. I used to visit this location on my lunch breaks at the marina. Always a delicious experience! Today, I ordered the Bonita bowl with chicken and it did not disappoint. It was pretty loaded with rice, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, and chicken, topped with sour cream. On the side, I ordered esquites. Grilled sweet corn with tajin and cotija cheese. My partner ordered two pastorcito tacos which he said were delicious. He raved about how flavorful the tortilla was but how thin they were. He prefers to have two tortillas rather than one per taco. Two Mexican cokes to wash all this down with. A pleasant experience in the marina

Yelp
We have been eating across the street for awhile and there are several options in the Marina for tacos. Going to Bonita tonight was a pleasant surprise. I had a veggie taco and he had three tacos-rotisserie chicken, pastor, and carne asada. His favorite would be the carne asada. We shared the side of corn. The chips are delicious to dip into the warm corn. They have a salsa bar and self serve water. The ambiance isn't as good as Tacolicious. It's more taqueria. It just depends what you feel like. I would have liked it if they doubled the tortillas for the tacos.

Yelp
Consistent quality, fast service, good presentation, always busy during lunch. It's hard to find parking in the area. Free salsa is nice.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Good place for birria tacos, also has the best quesadilla in the area Consistent and friendly experience at both Chestnut and Polk locations

Jelaila G.

Yelp
We ordered the shrimp Nor-Cal Burrito and chicken torta. So delicious! Fresh, flavorful, and authentic. Even the salsa options and chips, and lemonade are exceptional and worthy of mention!
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
Yummy! Chipotle chicken torte and chips with Chipotle salsa were excellent! Prices are great too super casual place lots of sitting indoor and outdoor in a fun neighborhood. We were really pleased with our choice to come here it was delicious!
google avatar

Ronne R.

Yelp
Tried the Baja tacos because I have a deep love (and slight obsession) for battered shrimp. They were a bit on the crispy side--let's just say they spent a little too much time in the tanning bed. The esquite corn had a citrusy kick that leaned more 'pucker up' than expected, but the black beans? Absolute perfection. Definitely coming back to give the horchata a spin. Overall, not too shabby!

Yelp
I vowed if I was in the neighborhood I would be back. I did!. Chilly night for Tortilla soup to go. So delicious. Like a tomato puree and then the little kick, but not spicy. It came with a lot of Shredded chicken. A separate container with shredded tortilla chips, with parmesan cheese and avocado. Good idea so that the chips stays crispy. Anything with avocado tastes better. Super fast service.

Yelp
Came here for dinner and then back for brunch the next morning! The food came out relatively fast, staff was friendly, and the food was super tasty. One of the best breakfast burritos I've had TBH. A little pricey but would definitely come back!
google avatar

Tamra W.

Yelp
I would go out of my way to come here!!! It's very fresh and best service! The rotisserie chicken was amazing! I think everything is awesome!
google avatar

Mei L.

Yelp
This place is really great. It's close to all the shops and it's just so incredibly convenient. The tacos are really yummy and I especially like the salsa bar. I'm a big fan of their tomatillo and jalapeño mix. They're friendly and accommodating.
google avatar

Madison M.

Yelp
They have a salsa bar with some decent salsa options. The burrito was good, not oily and well filled, it typically comes with cheese but I got it without, the verde salsa was good but not really spicy at all. Chips are not included with the purchase. Service was quick and friendly. The place had some seating inside and it was pretty full but still easy to find a spot- people seem to sit and eat pretty quick not really just hanging out.
google avatar

Abigail A.

Yelp
Good Mexican food on Chestnut. A little expensive but great place to get a burrito or the Bonita tacos. The staff is incredibly nice here. The burritos are huge and so delicious. They have sports on and it's nice vibe.
google avatar

Caragh M.

Yelp
We just used Bonita again for catering, and once again, everything was absolutely incredible. The food was beyond delicious--our guests couldn't stop raving and were all asking where it was from. JJ made the entire process seamless, as always. He's incredibly easy to work with and made everything so simple and stress-free. We definitely had plenty of food, but I'm not complaining--having leftovers from Bonita is a win! Bonita is hands down our go-to for catering, and of course, for regular lunch/dinner. If you're looking for authentic, flavorful Mexican food and a team that makes events easy and enjoyable, this is it. Thank you again, JJ and the Bonita team!!

Yelp
The Bonita chicken burrito is the best I've ever had. Tortilla soup is amazing too. The staff is lovely with incredible service, and there's a great vibe in there. We found this after months of trying different Mexican spots in SF & now come here at least once a week! Sooo good!

Yelp
Super good experience tonight at Bonita. Haven't been here and the place pillows great. Clean bathroom too! lol. Bonita burrito was pretty damn good and Lesli was probably the friendliest service I've had in a long time. She's awesome boss, give her a raise!!! See you soon Bonita and Lesli

Yelp
Good ambience ordered the green chilaquiles, very good did not disappoint. Would def come back

Blair V.

Yelp
Great little place. Service was top notch. Ambiance was nice, food was very good. My guest said it was the best tasting burrito he had ever had. Bonita bowl was crazy good. The fajita burrito was very very tasty. However...the only thing to avoid is the Mexican coleslaw. Grossly overpriced for what you receive, feels worse when you consider the cost of the ingredients!! It was dry, thrown together, lacked a binder like mayo or vinegar, and the only adder was a bits of mango and cilantro. Then presented overflowing in a small bowl so easy to spill. A big miss and truly one of the worst food ripoffs in my life. $8
google avatar

Karlee J.

Yelp
I really liked bonita! My favorite is the Al pastor with pineapple in it. To be honest, the rest of the meats I've tried have been good but the Al pastor is soooo good. Haven't ordered the nachos but a lady next to our table did and they looked amazing and were large! That's what I'll get next time. Super fun dining inside and in the vibrant yellow alley that feels like you've been transported to Central America. Great spot in chestnut! Also food came out quickly after ordering.
google avatar

Shelbey N.

Yelp
Fantastic ambience--cleanest restaurant I've ever seen--with a vibrant mural and cheerful atmosphere. The carne asada and al pastor tacos were both delicious!! The carne asada had an amazing crema on top and the Al pastor was the exact right balance between sweet and savory.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
The food is always amazing and the staff is incredibly nice! Plus the space is inviting!

Yelp
Yum! Came here for a late lunch and it satiated my Mexican craving. I got the carne asada burrito, and first off, it was MASSIVE. Definitely doable as a meal for 2. The burrito was packed with flavor; the meat was tender and well seasoned, they didn't skimp on guacamole, and the pico balanced out the heavier flavors. Also really liked that the tortilla was toasted. Also had the chance to sample the horchata and the chips, which were both fantastic.

John B.

Yelp
Delicious. Friendly. My wife and I got the fajitas and split it. Super tasty, clean. lively vibe.

Yelp
Great food amazing burrito but try the corn esquires and Mexican coleslaw with the tacos Next time I want to get there in time for breakfast items just missed it
google avatar

Yelp
I FORGOT TO ASK FOR REFRIED BEANS! ! ! I hate it when I do that... Alas, the burrito has black beans inside. Ever since I went to Costa Rica and they have black beans everywhere instead of pinto beans, I prefer black beans. So I'm pleased with this burrito. "Do you want chips?" "Um, I don't know... Is the burrito big?" "Mmhhmmm!" she slowly nodded with a big smile. I shrugged. "I don't need chips then." ARM BURRITO! ! ! This thing is big! Like a good big burrito. It's kinda California style, like clean style, like not too greasy or fatty. And not too juicy dribbly draining out the bottom. Come to think of it, these might be refried black beans--the best! Clean bathroom. Friendly service. Nice music. Cute art. Good variety of beverages including aquas frescas and beer in bottle or draft. Outdoor seating in front or in the side walkway. I'd give a 5th star if it were less expensive, but these SF restaurants gotta pay their rent... If you choose to give a thumbs-up or not, I hope you found my review helpful!

Yelp
When Spanish people serve rotisserie chicken is it really French or I don't get it Half chicken but it gets tough ..tender and then the skin is funny I didn't get sides potatoes and rice or veggies And salsa on chicken It's next to books inc and there is soda and Spanish food

Yelp
Excellent casual Mexican food in a fun, vibrant environment. I've been here a few times and sampled burritos, quesadillas, nachos and guacamole. All were excellent with generous portions. For meats I've tried the carne asada and the rotisserie chicken. Again, both were excellent. Service has been very friendly but it's an order at the counter and sit down place so not an integral part of the experience. Fresh, hiqh quality, and reasonably priced for the area. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I'm working in the City today and decided to try a new place for lunch, I checked out this place and based on reviews gave it a try. As you walk in this place looks pretty and put together. The menu is big enough to read from the entrance. I decided to order the quesadillas, I really wanted to try the chicken since people rave about it. So I ordered a chicken one and a carne de asada The guy behind the counter was short at giving answers, when asked about the difference between the quesadilla and the friscodilla he said it was the same. He looked irritated that I was reading the menu above him to check which one to get. The horchata was bland The quesadillas were good it but could use a little more cheese. The food itself was ok but will not be back since the have horrible service
google avatar

Isabella J.

Yelp
We wanted a quick bite nearby and Bonita seemed like it would deliver on a quick and easy meal. While this place touts a Mexican menu, flavors are not quite traditional Mexican but, that's nothing new in California. I ordered the ensalada campesana with chicken and it was exactly what I was looking for. The salad was large, loaded with crunchy jicama, corn, black beans, avocado. If anything was lacking it was the dressing. It was super bland to the point I questioned whether or not the salad was dressed. Deal breaker? Nah. I squeezed some lime on it and it brightened it up. My husband ordered the half chicken with Coleslaw and crispy potatoes. The coleslaw had pineapple and jicama in it...which was refreshing. I wouldn't classify this as Mexican. But the food was A-ok and the staff were all welcoming.

Yelp
Came back to try their new birria tacos and yup, definitely worth the trip. Every time I'm in the Marina I have to come here because of their addictive horchata pancakes & rotisserie chicken. Now I have to add their birria tacos to my list. | IG: Smackinfood

Ruth C.

Yelp
Went back to try the Rotisserie Chicken Burrito because the chicken seems to be a favorite, and this neighborhood lacks a good burrito place. Disappointing, and I wouldn't have eaten it if not drench it in hot salsa from the salsa bar (the only good thing here). A few other things: 1. There was a very large chicken bone joint (the knee bone I think) in one bite, and a long bone in another bite (see picture). Lack of quality is evident right there. 2. Their burritos lack appealing flavor, and the last few bites tasted like dirty dish rags. Some of the chips had that same dirty dish rag flavor, maybe from the bowl that was wiped with a dirty towel. 3. The chicken didn't taste fresh.

Yelp
I was walking on Chestnut Street a few days ago and was lured in after I saw the chalkboard with brunch offerings. My usual brunch bestie was in Palm Springs for the long weekend so I got takeout after my workout. I love horchata & tried their horchata pancakes, which is topped with coconut & bananas. It was on the sweeter side but not too sweet & I wolfed down my pancakes in one sitting. I went back to try the tres leches pancakes because I love tres leches cake that's normally a dessert item. The pancakes are sweet enough on their own & was accompanied with fresh strawberries, marscapone cheese, syrup & strawberry jalapeño marmalade. I used just a bit of the marscapone cheese & a few dashes of the syrup otherwise it would have been sweetness overload. The order was large enough to split into a few meals too. Unfortunately, they don't serve bacon, so I got bacon from the place next-door to complement the sweetness of the French toast. Yum! Service is friendly & helpful. Super casual setting where you normally order & grab a number & take a seat unless you're doing takeout.

Fiorella V.

Yelp
Fabulous Service - while it looks like a takeout restaurant with a simple eat-in area, we were very impressed with the food - the quality was good, very fresh and large portions. The cost was good. We highly recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
3.5 stars. It's nothing on them, just more $$ than what it's worth, but completely understood by the neighbor where in. I feel this way about a lot of eats on the same street that is quick dining experiences. I got a Bonita burrito to go, which was $20 after the tip. They gave me free salsa and lots of chips. Burrito used fresh ingredients. I was hungry and devoured my food at my desk. BTW: the brown sauce is spiciest and has this pleasant burnt/ cooked taste. The green sauce and red salsa are around the same spiciness level to me. They have house margaritas for $12 for one serving and $45 for a group serving. Chances are, if you're in this neighborhood with a group of coworkers, you're walking in and having a quick lunch here.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
you order at the counter before seating yourself. not busy on a Sunday night, but the inside felt homely and cozy. the staff are so friendly and kept checking in on us. I ordered the fajita burrito bowl and it was such a generous portion -- super value for money!
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
Solid, quality, made to order Mexican food on Chestnut Street. I feel like you can get really good value for the amount of food that you get, especially with the bowls. It's super easy to order online and go pick up-- this is what I usually do instead of eating there. They have a nice selection of salsa's and will always give you a bunch of them in your to go bag. I usually get the Norcal bowl or the Bonita bowl, and my son loves their kids bean and rice burrito.
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
This is our local go-to spot when craving quick mexican food, never disappoints. Quick and nice service, spacious seating area on the inside- the self serve sauce bar is a nice touch to load up on sauces to dip with chips while waiting on the food (which is never that long). Not as greasy as some Mexican places and good portion size- we always end up taking food home. Nachos are loaded with toppings and flavors (piled high on the plate) and the taco bowls can feel neverending but delicious, usually opt for the shrimp topping but their pork is good also. Have also tried their tacos before which are decent also. Horchata is great here- not chalky like in other places- smooth and sweet and refreshingly tasty. Love the aqua frescas too, watermelon

Yelp
A solid source for burritos and burrito bowls on Chestnut. After a matinee at the Marina Theater, we walked up bustling Chestnut street for a bite to eat. Not wanting a full service restaurant dinner or long lines to get in, we happened upon Bonita Taqueria. You order at the counter, then they bring you your food, including a free bowl of chips and a salsa bar. Besides the selection of sauces, they also had a pickled pepper, carrot, and cauliflower gardeniere. We ordered one burrito bowl and one traditional burrito--both very generous portions. The burrito bowl was massive and tasty with ample carne asada, rice, beans, and salad. The burrito came grilled on la plancha, which made the tortilla crisp and the cheese gooey. The only complaint I have is the carnitas burrito was very greasy and dripped oil. Perhaps they can remove the grease before layering it into the burrito. They also offer beer, soft drinks, and many other options. Seating inside is ample and the bright decor welcoming. All in all, a nice casual dining experience
google avatar

Yelp
Famous for its yellow valley on San Francisco Marina, this restaurant is both pretty and down-to-earth. I enjoyed using the lettuce shells to DIY tacos! I wouldn't say that it's the best Mexican food that I've had, but the yellow valley outdoor dining is unique and really aesthetic. Although the taste was not impressive, it's still a pretty place with a chill vibe. Check it out.

Yelp
Rotisserie chicken had moist dark meat but breast was dry and stringy so I left white meal uneaten. The skin was crispy and delicious. Black beans were perfect with warmed corn tortillas. Salsas are the bomb. Server replaced my chicken with side of chopped beef, tough but tasty. Why not more tender? Spicy was nice but overly salted. Clean atmosphere, hybrid self service. Clean bathroom, well lighted. I suggest dimming lights for a cozier atmosphere after 5 pm. Fresh ice cold water unlimited. You can add fresh lime from salsa bar.

Adriana T.

Yelp
Wow I was blown away by the Al Pastor tacos! The salsa and chips were warm and on point!! Food was delicious, support this small business!
google avatar

Julissa P.

Yelp
Staff here were so friendly, I ordered the chilaquiles & an esquite. They have a salsa station where you can get as much as you want & this place is a really cute & vibrant place to be, seems like a lot of locals come here so I trust it even more. 10/10

Carter S.

Yelp
This place was great. It has a very good vibe and is great for any kind of person. The service is super fast and still very good. The food is immaculate, and has a perfect touch of spice and good flavor.

Yelp
Great vibes and great quality. I am updating a review from months ago basically reinforcing that you guys make high quality fare. I mean, check out the size of the fish on the fish taco! Looking forward to stopping by again on a warmer day and grabbing one of your margaritas.

Lolita E.

Yelp
I picked up a cheese quesadilla on a corn tortilla to take home that was so bad, I threw it out. The guacamole and pico de gallo was delicious. But they hardly had any cheese on the tortillas, so it was greasy, tough and tasteless. I'll never go back myself but maybe they'll do better for someone else. Mostly, I was disappointed they'd serve it like that.
google avatar

Meghan S.

Yelp
This spot is pretty good for quick, fresh Mexican! It's not greasy like your classic SF Mexican spots and is a great place to gorge and not feel too bad after. I was super impressed by their fried fish tacos - they were huge pieces of fish and super delicious. My partner always gets the chicken burrito - it's fresh rotisserie chicken and always moist and flavorful. I would not recommend the salad - it was basically a bowl of cabbage. They always offer free chips and salsas! They also have many options for burritos and tacos; rotisserie chicken, al pastor, veggie, shrimp, grilled fish, fried fish, etc.

Rachel K.

Yelp
I just have to say that in addition to really good food, the staff here is always SO nice! It impresses me every time

Yelp
Ordered via delivery. It was quick and food was delicious. Unless I was on vacation, I have never drank in the middle of the day. But all went out the window because I really wanted some margaritas. Been debating about it for days, but just got it because why not...Strawberry margaritas! Woohoo! It was very nice and hmm...I'm a little drunk. Also I don't have any margaritas glasses so I just pour it in a mug. Tacos were delicious. I had the Baja fish and shrimp tacos (yum) and he mainly dined on the street tacos trio. He liked it. We tried the elote and it was really flavorful. The restaurant also gave us 3 types of salsa ranging from mild, medium, high heat. Food was 4 stars + margarita = 5 stars! From what I can see, it's a really cute place. Will need to pay a visit when this shelter in place is over.
