Houston’s Best Coffee Shops | Eater Houston

"This quintessential Heights coffee shop is the archetype for fellow craft coffee shops in Houston when roasting artisanal beans in small batches. Drinks can be as fanciful and straightforward as you like. The Milk and Honey latte, sweetened with honey and spiced with cinnamon, is a favorite, along with crowd-pleasers such as the Shakerato, a shaken cold mix of espresso, agave, citrus zest, and bitters, and the Mayan mocha latte, made with dark chocolate, vanilla, and cayenne." - Brianna Griff

Coffee is fantastic! We love coming on the weekend, it’s usually pretty full but the service is quick and friendly. It never gets too loud when we are there. I have also gone for a book club meeting and we were able to talk without issue.

Google
This coffee shop is my absolute favorite! I make the long drive from the Woodlands just to come here. It’s worth every penny. I almost always order the same thing: an iced milk and honey with oat milk, and an iced Matcha with oat milk and vanilla. Sometimes I switch it up and get a third drink, like an iced cappuccino with oat milk or a hot flat white with oat milk. Everything on their menu is delicious, but their Boomtown taco is a must-try! Love my boomtown!

Google
The veggie breakfast is so incredibly delicious! Fresh, filling, flavorful, and so satisfying! Love this little coffee shop, and the atmosphere and employees are lovely. My cafe au lait with soy milk was also delicious! Excellent vegetarian and vegan options!

Google
Boomtown Coffee is a great spot in The Heights to grab coffee and breakfast. Friendly staff and delicious pastries. The breakfast items also looked pretty tasty.

Google
BOOM! The Sea Turtle and Milk & Honey Lattes were fantastic! The breakfast tacos were fresh and the salsa alone was worth the 30 minute drive to experience this great experience in the Heights! Thank you.

Google
Our family likes this place a lot. But I’m not sure we’ve ever ordered multiple to go tacos without them having rotten brown avocados. If this had happened once or even a handful of times I wouldn’t mention it. But we were coming for years and it got so bad that we swore we wouldn’t go anymore. We ventured back after a year hiatus, and the brown avocados are still in our tacos! I don’t understand why it’s so hard to tell chefs “if an avocado is brown, throw it out, don’t put it in the tacos.” But apparently it is bc it’s a chronic problem at this place. Five stars without that issue. Hard to go anymore with it.

Google
Boomtown is hands down one of the best coffee spots around. The coffee is incredibly fresh and you can really taste the quality in every cup. The staff is always welcoming, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. Excellent service and top-tier coffee—definitely worth a visit if you’re serious about your brew!

Google
The service was nice and coffee was good, but im not entirely sure i needed THAT much seeds in the avocado toast…

Yelp
I love tacos and I love tea. I never thought about blending them together til I visited here then Boom ! I'm put on to a new craving. The freshness of the food was amazing. With the tea I tasted every note and nothing was overbearing, just wish I was offered a larger size because it went too quick. My biggest nuisance had nothing to do with the actual food and beverage but more so the wobbling table and limited access to sockets to charge my laptop but the food and tea was so refreshingly good, it overpowered that. I recommend this place and the parking was done with ease either directly in front or across the street open gravel parking lot. The ambiance was ok and to be honest had I not been recommended to try this spot, I could've missed out on a gem

Yelp
An unassuming coffeeshop native to Houston serving up breakfast tacos that you can't skip. Their variety of coffee concoctions on their menu speaks for itself, but I'd be amiss if I didn't say that the breakfast tacos are what pull me back here every time. The house lattes are all fantastic, I opted for the Mayan Mocha and the Milk & Honey this time around. Their custom concoctions are so fun and break the monotony of the morning ritual (I highly recommend the Shakarato). The staff is friendly and will guide you through their concoctions if you need help. On to the breakfast tacos - I think the Sausage Egg & Veggie and Potato Egg & Cheese might be my two favorites, but it's so hard to pick. They are all so unique and bring breakfast taco ingredients together in the most wonderful way. From the potatoes to the breakfast sausage, you can tell the care that goes into each individual component of these tacos. Their corn tortillas are special and bring everything together. Even if you're in a rush or are just looking for a single cup of coffee, you need to pick one of these up - I can't stress this enough. Overall, a quick and casual cafe to be in-and-out of or sit down at to do some work. The ambiance is at a moderate decibel level and it's easy to focus here. If you're in the neighborhood, I highly recommend stopping by!

Yelp
Cute little spot on 19th street in the Heights. Not the coziest of coffee shops, but our drinks were good and service was quick!
google avatar

Yelp
Bright, airy atmosphere with plenty of seating for meetings or work space. Friendly, accommodating baristas & great coffee!

Yelp
Great matcha! Went here for a date with my mom one morning. I enjoyed both drinks and we ended up switching lol Great staff! Loved the cute area to sit and watch them make your coffee/drink in front of you
google avatar

Sandra K.

Yelp
Coffee was the ice capp and it was really good. Put it over ice and it was tastier. The potato egg and cheese taco was a little overpriced in an area with $3 breakfast tacos. The homemade corn tortilla was solid but nothing stood out about the taco itself. Overall still a good breakfast.

Yelp
I usually only visit when I get a haircut next to the shop at Cutthroat. I've only ever tried one thing here and stuck to it because it checked all my iced coffee boxes haha... but I absolutely love the "Crud" coffee from here. It tastes deep and rich, also strong, I add a coffee cube sometimes because a barista suggested it to me once. It's a bit on the pricey side however, the consistency I've experienced and how good the drink was it is not a bad thing. The service is always nice, and the ambiance of the place is welcoming plus I love the queer friendly vibes. But I don't think they take cash so bring your card!

Yelp
This spot is super nice for studying and super vibey if you just want to stop by for a quick drink and some bites. The staff was very sweet and friendly, and very knowledgeable about their menu. It's a great place to frequent when you need to cram for an exam. We both ordered the matcha latte, which we did have to add vanilla to, because the drink on its own was kind of bland. They should definitely bring the old recipe back to have it a bit more sweet and adds more notes to the flavor. But the matcha itself was very nice and I'd definitely go back to try other drinks and food on the menu as well!

Yelp
I love the ambience here. Very spacious coffee shop with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. This is a great place to go to grab a quick bite and catch up with friends or to catch up on work. The quiche here is to die for. Breakfast taco was ok. Theres quite a bit of food options on the menu for vegetarians and non vegetarians.
google avatar

Yelp
Spacious quick serve coffee spot. My ice latte was quick and tasty and added lavender syrup to it. I also got an avocado toast which was delicious and light enough to fill you up but not too much as it was hot and didn't want to be too full on a hot day. The quiche however took way too long about 40 min. I think it was forgotten as our number was taken away and we got a slice not a whole which should've been quick. I'm sure it was an accident but wasn't crispy and sort of soggy.

Yelp
I am a regular great coffee. The staff is friendly and fast. Weekends are hard here. They also roast coffee with a variety of blends priced between 16$-22$ a pound. The mens range is well-priced While no longer a regular revisited a lovely Indonesia drip bottomless cup just great brilliant
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
Cool vibe in a great location parking is across the street which can be a hassle with no near by crosswalk but selection of coffees was great and the staff was as super helpful.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to pop in this past Saturday. It was packed, so we had to wait a bit for our drinks. Your food is brought out to you so I sat at a table as he waited for the drinks. I ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk and he ordered a flat white. The matcha latte was good but I could have used more taste. The flat white was good but my friend did not like it. We also ordered food. I ordered the quiche and he ordered the potato, egg, and cheese taco and a chorizo egg taco. The food was better than the drinks! My quiche was really good and I would order it again if ever back here. The tacos were good and huge! They also make their corn tortillas in house and they are amazing. Not sure if I would go out of my way to come back, but I may pop in again if ever on 19th

Yelp
Sea turtle latte - 9/10 - This had caramel, mocha, and vanilla. Loved the espresso quality and i could taste all 3 flavors. I added a splash of half and half to make it creamier.

Yelp
Try out the Milk and Honey with Oat milk. It's so good it will make your day!!! Shoutout to my favorite baristas Rose, Gaby, and Gabe for always taking awesome care of me!!! Support local y'all!!! Cheers

Yelp
Great service and food! Ambience was really nice too ! It was very relaxing. I definitely want to come back. Only issue was the coffee I had wasn't that great for the price. Granted I'm not expecting something amazing but if you're gonna have the same prices as Starbucks, you should definitely do coffee better than them at least when it comes to iced variety's. Get there early they fill up fast you'll see why!
google avatar

Kendall R.

Yelp
The coffee is GREAT. Chefs kiss in my opinion. Coming from Seattle Washington which is coffee capital, I have high expectations for a good roast, with strong aromas. I'll just say they brew their coffee in a variety of ways and any which way, you will get a good taste of the bean. The space is small but they make it work, everyone is efficient and the staff is nice. Parking is street parking.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a neighborhood staple and favorite - I came on a cold, rainy Saturday morning and there was a constant stream of people in those few hours; not even unseasonal nasty weather can deter these coffee devotees! They have a large menu with your standard favorites plus hot and iced unique concoctions of their own design. Service is friendly and fast considering they are having to hand craft each drink. There is a good amount of seating inside plus a few tables out in their entry patio. Parking - street

Yelp
Barista was super sweet and their salted caramel latte was superb. Just the right amount of sweetness and flavor that complimented the coffee taste nicely without overpowering it or drowning it out. About twice as good as Starbucks and for the same price. I plan to come back on days I have more time to make the detour to the heights.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't know what to say about this place. Maybe that I am underwhelmed? The place is so cute and I was just really looking forward to a nice latte. Nope. It was just "meh." Got a caramel latte and a Sea Turtle latte. Just blah. I make better coffee at home in a much bigger cup , tastes FANTASTIC, and it doesn't cost me 6 bucks. Which I don't mind paying when the coffee is good. This just was mediocre, at best, on the flavor scale. It didn't even have a coffee taste. It was WATER-Y. Seemed like it took forever though there appeared to be 6 people milling around behind the counter. So long a wait for a tiny cup of flavorless coffee which was 6 bucks a cup. Geesh. Not. A. Fan.

Yelp
Boomtown has a lot of good things about it. It is in a great location, the vibe is good, employees are friendly, and coffee is great. I've been coming here for years but recently started going to Roast & Brew in Shady Acres a bit more because of how wasteful Boomtown is. This is why I only give it 4 stars. The amount of single use plastic they go through for no reason is ridiculous. There's no reason to serve people who dine in their iced lattes in plastic cups, among other things. Do better for the environment and our planet, please, and then you'll get 5 stars.
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
I'm about to say something that some people may find controversial. Best cold brew in Houston is here at Boomtown. I've had a lot of cold brew and none match the flavor and smoothness of Boomtown's. Beyond their cold brew, their hot coffee is also excellent. I usually buy my beans here to make coffee at home. And their food! Tacos, toasts, pastries - there's a wide selection of options, including vegan and gluten free. I especially like the seasonal veggie taco and mushroom and tomato toast. Baristas have always been kind, too. 5/5 love Boomtown.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Great service and flavorful espresso. I got the Mayan mocha and was pleasantly surprised by the flavor and the slight spicy kick. I love the inclusivity that BC represents through out the decorations (‍‍). As a gay person, I felt safe. Thank you!
google avatar

Deepika N.

Yelp
I used to loveeee Boomtown Coffee (their downtown location was top tier IYKYK). This heights location used to be one of my regular coffee spots. Well priced coffee! I just feel that their quality has decreased significantly in recent years. The espresso drinks don't pack the same punch as they used to. This location specifically isn't great for doing work, it feels more like a sit down and dine in vibe. however the food menu isn't very extensive, so I don't come here often for food either.
google avatar

Fernando C.

Yelp
I hesitate to review this place cause I'm very selfish. I don't want it to get crowded! It's the best breakfast in town. Delicious, generous and affordable breakfast tacos that never disappoint. Their coffee is very good but to me, it's the staff that truly makes it. Love this place!
google avatar

Dina S.

Yelp
Very nice location. You can grab a coffee and do some shopping in the heights. Very quiet place with very nice staff.
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
Vibe- Great spot for studying and working; there's about 13 tables inside and each has 2-4 seats at it, there's seats outside too. Customer service- Great! The barista that took my order was very nice! Food/drinks- I ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk; I also heard their milk and honey latte is good too. Parking (only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars)- It honestly sucks! I just got lucky and found a spot right outside the shop.
google avatar

Joy L.

Yelp
This place is a popular local coffeeshop and always has a steady stream of customers. They have a wide variety of unique coffee drinks! Their toddy mocha and iced crüd are crowd favorites so I tried the iced crüd which is a new orleans style coffee and it was very strong, well balanced, and had a bold espresso flavor. In all their iced drinks you can also ask for a "crack rock" aka an espresso cube made of cold brew which makes your coffee stronger as it melts. Stop by this place if you're in need of a extra strong dose of caffeine for the day! There's also lots of seating inside and some outdoor tables as well if you want to do some work there or catch up with a friend. Parking can get difficult during busy hours in the morning since there's only a few spots outside their shop. The rest seems to be street parking but I was lucky enough to snag a spot when I stopped by on a weekday morning. The staff is friendly, kind, and the drinks come out super fast.

Yelp
Great location for us as we visited from out of town and wanted a caffeine kick to get our day started. We hustled into Boomtown to grab an iced coffee and one of their unique lavender honey hot coffees. We were pleasantly pleased by the taste of the coffee, and the service was spot-on. I did notice that whenever the classes let out next door (dance fitness spot), this place can appear as if they are swamped but don't worry, from my observation, the line moves fast, and you will get plenty of time to decide on what you want to eat or drink. We parked directly in front of the shop, but you might have to find a spot around the shops/storefronts in this area. Someone will leave their spot soon if they are popping in for coffee. I recommend visiting the local spots and shows with a coffee in hand from Boomtown whether it is a hot or cold coffee on a hot or cold day in Houston.
google avatar

Carla H.

Yelp
Great coffee spot for "The Heights" area. I was needing to charge my phone and kill some time so I popped in here randomly on a Sunday. So there is street parking so that was not a issue and the service was great. When I entered I was immediately greeted which was greatly appreciated. I didn't know what I wanted but the young lady did a great job informing me of the menu and drink options. I really wanted like a fresh homemade juice or smoothie but that was not an option. Now when you enter there is an area ti buy juices and water when you first enter. I opted for a cold tea that was like ginger and turmeric with cinnamon I believe. It was good. I forgot to mention it kinda loud hippie music so if your looking for something quiet this ain't the spot. Still cool if you have work to do and need a groovy spot to relax. Overall I would return.
google avatar

Yelp
The best in the business. This place is OG for Houston too. Great coffee & vibes. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I had heard great things about Boomtown and made the trek out to the Heights one Saturday afternoon to check out the hype. They have their own roastery as well, so you know you're getting your bean juice straight from the cooks. I have had iced americano, latte, and mocha latte from here. They are all good--great, even. The house blend plays nice with them and is nicely balanced in all of the above. The folks at boomtown definitely chose a good crowd-pleaser for their house roast. Service is decent, and it was often too busy to do much more than place your order and get your drink about five minutes later. The ambiance is slightly that of a hole in the wall joint, but the place is always bustling. For those around the neighborhood, I can definitely see how this place would be the go to place. I would return occasionally, maybe if passing through on some other errand. Boomtown is a great, even amazing place, but the Heights is an outrageously competitive place for coffee shops to set up.
google avatar

Allison W.

Yelp
This place always has a steady stream of customers coming in, so it can be relatively busy and hard to find a spot to sit. We got their sea turtle latte ($5-6) snd we enjoyed it. It was well balanced and not too sweet. If you're after a sweet and creamy latte, I would order something else because this coffee shop delivers big on their coffee beans, so their lattes are wonderfully complex, bittersweet, and layered. I have also had their americano before, and it is definitely an experience if you're trying to pick out different flavor notes in coffee. This is one of the top places in Houston, for the coffee alone (imo). Parking may be difficult on busy days. The beans they sell in the store are excellent.
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
Really enjoy the service and coffee at this cafe. Greeted by friendly baristas when you arrive, with a menu board that is easy to understand, so you're able to pick some unique or different coffees and teas. I tried the Iced Capp. Requested it with no simple syrup so i could have sugar free. It was great and loved the foam. My friend tried the Matcha Latte and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to coming back to try more things !
google avatar

Ken C.

Yelp
Good local coffee shop. I like the Johnny cash and the service is fast. There are other products you can get as you line up to the order. They also offer cold brew coffee if you need something bigger for home/office : )

James

Yelp
Women and man working were very rude. Maybe because the store was going to close within an hour, but it was unnecessary and I won't be going back. Otherwise the place was clean and the drinks were decent.
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
This is a great little coffee shop. Went to study and the music wasn't over bearing. Great atmosphere. Coffee was wonderful as well. Just wish they had some sugar free options... but the syrups are made in house and delish! Will be back.
google avatar

Alberto M.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in the middle of the Heights near several boutiques. The inside provides some seating near the entrance windows with smaller tables near the wall and bar stool tables in the center. The shop itself is long and provides plenty of space for sitting. Outlets are near the wall but no one seemed to be fighting over one. When I first arrived around 2pm on a Tuesday, it was a pretty relaxing atmosphere. However, around 4pm it got pretty rowdy (a tad bit too loud for me to study with my headphones in). I really enjoyed the Mayan Mocha (dark coco, vanilla, and cayenne latte). The barista was really nice and greeted all the customers. Parking was set up differently than other places in houston with parking spots at ~90 degree angle from the road directly in front of the shop, but there were plenty when I arrived. Had a good time here but will probably return only during non busy hours (outside of 7-9 or 4-6) to work.
google avatar

Kyla W.

Yelp
Cute little place. I came here to do some homework and grab some coffee. I started with 2 Boomtown tacos & a Sea Turtle. Atmosphere: fairly quiet, slightly smaller than I expected. About medium size compared to big coffee shops. It gets pretty busy around 10 AM, I got here around 8 AM. Get here early if you come to do work because during the week it looks like it fills up fast. They play a mix of chill and indie music? I'm not super familiar but it was pretty calming and I got a lot of work done. Side Note: Very diverse. I love the all inclusive vibes. Everyone is welcome which is very made clear. Food / Drink: my drink was delicious. I asked for an extra sweet and they delivered! Definitely will be back for the sea turtle. The boomtacos weren't my favorite, but if you love avocado, a fried egg, and black beans on a corn tortilla it's definitely worth it. It's giving Cali style breakfast. Overall I would definitely be back. I prefer bigger coffee shops, and only downside was that it was freezing, but I guess I would rather be cold than hot. There is outdoor seating as well. The only issue I had was that my computer wouldn't connect to the Wi-Fi so I had to use my hotspot. If you have a work computer that runs on a VPN just be mindful. Other than that, people are having business meetings, others are working, some meeting with friends, it's a pretty chill environment.

Yelp
I visited for the first time with a friend to study for a few hours. I would return, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. The interior is clean, cute, and cool. While the space is small, I feel like there is adequate seating and enough room to bring your books and laptops. The music was at an appropriate volume, and I appreciate the signage that supports an inclusive environment. The bathrooms were clean and well-stocked. When the weather's nice, there is outdoor seating as well. I can imagine parking could be a struggle. I happened to get lucky and snagged a space in front of the cafe. There is street parking around the area if you're willing to walk a block or two. The drinks were good. That's pretty much all there is to say. Decent drinks and about the same price as other coffee shops. The only thing that really turned me off was the smell of secondhand smoke inside and outside the cafe. The smell was quite prevalent during the 3-4 hours I was there, and it was bothersome at times. Aside from this, the cafe was solid in all other regards and is worth a try.
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
Always amazing food and coffee. Breakfast sandwiches are big enough for 2 to split. My son was happy with our mistake of getting 2
google avatar

Austin J.

Yelp
Great ambience (very hip and perfect for 19th street in the heights), good friendly service, delicious and strong (emphasize) coffee, wifi easy to connect to, and plenty of parking; I just wish there were some more comfortable seating options lol
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
Enjoyed Boomtown after shopping at Emerson Rose and eating at Harold's. Good to finish off with solid cappuccino. Great day for me in the heights.

Nora E.

Yelp
Homemade blueberry muffin was good with lots of blueberries throughout the muffin. The decaffeinated coffee was very good. The atmosphere easily accommodated a small party of four to a private party of one. The help was friendly and order came well within a reasonable amount of time. Loved the music and clean unique atmosphere. As one that is usually on my own, I will definitely come back to this quaint small but roomy coffee and pastry shop close to my place in the Heights.
google avatar

Jordan B.

Yelp
Absolutely lovely afternoon coffee shop. Boomtown is a heights neighborhood favorite. My favorite time of day to go is the afternoon - it is relatively empty and on a nice day it is heavenly to sit outside with a laptop or good book. On the weekend or during morning hours there can be a line and it gets quite busy. If you're planning to do focused work I recommend the afternoon. Coffee quality is spectacular and STRONG. Great Latté art which I always appreciate. The community here is wholesome- lots of neighborhood folks and families stopping by on their walks. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Lucas F.

Yelp
Vibes: decent Music: questionable Milk and Honey Latte: good, but a signature latte should be better Sea Turtle Latte: unexpectedly salty but not bad Almond Croissant: average Gender-Neutral Bathrooms: phenomenal
google avatar

Abigail R.

Yelp
Great coffee shop in the heart of the Heights! I recently got a job near 19th St., and Boomtown has become the perfect spot for an afternoon latte break. Recommend my usual: milk & honey latte. The Sea Turtle and Spectre are also great if you have sweet tooth!
google avatar

Lynn D.

Yelp
Jesus Christ if I could give them 10/5 stars I would! Amazing service, quickness, and quality!!! * My friends and I couldn't figure out what we wanted and the cashier helped us decide based off what we were feeling like. Super friendly and funny, would love to come back again just based off my interaction with them. (And I was at the beginning of rush hour.) * Talk about fast service! Within less than a minute of ordering my drink, my drink was out and ready. You'd think it may taste a bit off since it was prepared so quick, but no, the man knows his stuff. One of the best chai lattes I've ever had! Can't wait to come back again
google avatar

Tayler S.

Yelp
Great coffee shop on a lively street in the heights. Parking is easy and service is quick. Loved the parfait and an iced vanilla latte. All of their food looks amazing! Worked remote for a couple of hours on a weekday. Music was playing but it's not too loud or distracting. Wifi and plugs available for charging.
