This Puerto Rican–Southern Restaurant Is the Soul of a North Carolina Neighborhood

"In downtown Durham I watched this Puerto Rican–Southern restaurant wind down for the night while its owners—wife-and-husband team Serena and Toriano (Tori) Fredericks—moved effortlessly between front of house and kitchen, tending to patrons and even a regular, James, who drops by daily for a Coke. What began as the Soul Patrol food truck evolved into a 40-seat brick-and-mortar with a covered patio that holds upward of 75, opened in November 2019 after a pop-up on the American Tobacco Campus; its decor includes upside-down calderos as light fixtures and a large Victor Knight mural that traces the couple’s family journey. The menu is a heartfelt intersection of Puerto Rican and Southern flavors—hoecakes, alcapurrias, jibaritos, pernil mac and cheese, sweet potato cheesecake empanadas, vegan Lawry’s-seasoned collards, and a fiery pique (pepper-vinegar relish)—and their desserts include strawberry crunch and hummingbird cake slices from Tony’s Cake House. They source local ingredients (notably collards from Stanley Hughes of Pine Knot Farms), carry smaller local beers like Spaceway’s Don Dada stout, host live jazz Sundays to support musicians, offer catering and a still-running food truck, and recently opened a stall at the ballpark; through the pandemic they all but lived at the restaurant, leaning on and giving back to a tight-knit community that kept them afloat." - Von Diaz

Puerto Rican flavors meet Southern sides—think pernil with mac and cheese, collards, and tostones—in a community-minded space at American Tobacco. Profiled by Food & Wine and local outlets, it tells a Durham story on a plate.

I absolutely loved my experience at Boricua Soul! From the moment I walked in, the warm, inviting atmosphere and the friendly, attentive staff made me feel right at home. Everyone was so kind and helpful, ready to answer questions and make great recommendations. The food was incredibly fresh and seasoned perfectly — you can truly taste the love and authenticity in every bite. Each dish had that perfect balance of flavor that reminded me so much of Puerto Rico. The flavors took me straight back to the island — comforting, soulful, and made with care. The restaurant itself was clean, bright, and welcoming, with a laid-back vibe that fits perfectly into the American Tobacco Campus setting. You can tell the team here takes pride not just in the food, but in creating a positive experience for every guest. Whether you’re craving something that brings you closer to home or just looking for amazing Puerto Rican-inspired dishes, this is the place to be. I’ll definitely be coming back — everything about it made me smile and feel that island soul! 🌴💛

The flavor profile of the pernil (roast pork) was spot on. The tostones (fried green plantains) were fresh, crispy and well seasoned. The empanadas were stuffed full and flavorful. The service was great. We arrived very close to closing time so it was fairly empty and the staff was sorta cleaning up for the night. I highly recommend trying this place if (like me) you need an occasional trip back to Boricua cooking, bit with a little soul. The prices were reasonable as the portions were generous.

Closest thing to Puerto Rican food that I've had in this area. The food was hot and flavorful and portion size was on point. I also tried their strawberry and peach lemonade. I would definitely be back to try their other selections.

The food and atmosphere is PERFECT! We went on a Friday night and the owners were actually in there working and acknowledging customers ! The food was a 10 out of 10. We had 5 wings and the basket with the pork, greens and the Mac and cheese (and maybe it had rice also) everything was so flavorful. I love that the restaurant is modern, tap to pay and you can order from the kiosk or the QR code on the table . The location is great and very lively!

Love the food! Got a recent delivery from here, and it is a great amalgamation of Puerto Rican and Southern flavors! The empanadas came decorated with cute tiny flags with a nod to the Spanish and American roots. Looking forward to trying at the restaurant next time!

Boricua should find itself in the most iconic dishes and sides like Tostones. The ball was dropped with them, $5 for 4 and a half platanutres, yup that’s right, can’t be called tostones. I think we got a 1/4 of a platano for $5. Sorry, but this needs to change ASAP!! The platter with chicharrón de pollo was really good, the pollo was juicy not dry and well made. The BBQ pull pork (Pernil) sandwich (kaiser bun), not so much a boricua pernil sandwich though, with the fresh pork rings was nice. The cuban sandwich lacked structure as it was what we call in the island (ciego). Again, lost a start due to the very dissatisfaction with the non so tostones. Staff were friendly and attentive.

The food is good, but feels more “soul food” than Puerto Rican, really. The empanadas are decent but the sandwiches, pork, Mac and cheese are much better. Some of the food was warm, but not hot, when it came out. The food takes a while to come, too. The flavored lemonades feel a bit artificial and are too sweet. Seating inside is pretty substantial and there is more outside as well. All the staff are very friendly.

The place is a little bit tricky to find but the street signage does what it can to try and navigate you to the establishment. Inside is a cozy vibe with nice murals and enough seating to enjoy dining in. I tried The Platter (Chicharonnes de Pollo and Pernil) and empanadas. The collard greens were spicy which I liked, plantains were cooked to perfection, and the beef empanadas were delicious, crispy, and not too greasy. The Chicharonnes de Pollo and Pernil lacked some seasoning in my opinion but weren’t terrible. The service was great and didn’t take long. I’d come back to try the sweet potato empanada since they were sold out the night I visited. 7/10 overall.
