Hooray it's my 700th review, FINALLY! I should have completed that number back in 2016 but life has a funny way of throwing curve balls at you...
I wanted to dedicate this review to the restaurant I spent my birthday at this year. To celebrate with my New York friends, I really wanted to go somewhere that had traditional French food (since I barely had any when I was in the country last month, ironically) below 34th Street. Ultimately somewhere that had great food, chill Parisian vibes, and enough space that I could book a party of seven without issue. So many French places won't do tables over six!! Boucherie Union Square crossed off every single box and is also gorgeous to boot!
One of my favorite things about this restaurant is just how giant the menu is. They had ALL of my favorites listed and in the true spirit of birthday girl domination, I took over ordering all the dishes and even the wine! Going with large groups makes it easier since we can order a multitude of dishes and share everything family style. All courses and dishes to follow...
Appetizers:
-SOUPE À L'OIGNON
Traditional French onion soup, croutons and Gruyère
-SALADE CÉSAR
Romaine, anchovy, Parmesan, lemon
-MOULES DIJONNAISE
Garlic, shallots, thyme, light mustard cream
-LES ESCARGOTS
Snails, shallots, lemon, parsley and garlic butter
-WAGYU CARPACCIO
Truffle aioli, horseradish, caper berries
My favorites of the apps were the onion soup (so HEAVENLY I scraped for every last fleck of cheese), the mussels, and the carpaccio. The salad didn't have enough dressing or whatever dressing there was, was not packing the flavor punch one would expect. For the escargots, I've reconfirmed to myself that snails are gross and I'll never get over the chewy texture nor the slimy mental image of them haha. Carpaccio was delicious and highly recommend.
Main courses paired with a bottle of Chateau du Chatelard Beaujolais-Villages which was outstanding:
-CÔTE DE BOEUF POUR DEUX
48 oz Tomahawk ribeye, herb roasted bone marrow, Bordelaise
-BOEUF BOURGUIGNON
Traditional French braised beef, carrots,
mushrooms, bacon, pommes purée
-COQ AU VIN
Braised chicken, red wine reduction, bacon, carrots, mushrooms
And of course, all the sides:
-POMMES FRITES
-POMMES PURÉE
-CHAMPIGNONS
-SMOKED GOUDA MACARONI GRATIN
Highlights from the main course were the tomahawk and the bone marrow but honestly everything tasted great. I think I started getting the meat sweats halfway into this course as I wanted to rip my dress sleeves off at one point.
Dessert was a lovely birthday creme brûlée complete with chocolate note and candle!
Overall, my dinner here was nothing short of outstanding. The waiters took good care of us, and our food came out at a reasonable pace and beautifully prepared. One of my favorite events of the evening was the small gift that the restaurant gave me -- it was a book of Boucherie history and origins which also included recipes and on the inside page, there was a handwritten note to me saying happy birthday.
Boucherie team, thank you for making my birthday experience so amazing!
