A San Francisco Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene | Eater SF

"The long-established sourdough brand that was the first in San Francisco to apply French bread technique to the region’s native sourdough yeast (circa 1849); known for novelty loaves shaped like lobsters and crabs in tourist locations and for making a solid soup-in-bread bowl." - Dianne de Guzman

Right there on the frontage road was Boudin, so I whipped it on in to check it out.. I wasn't much for a clam chowder in a bread bowl, so opted for a quick sandwich, and only because those Hansen twins were in there eating salads talking about the good old days at Salvador Elementary school...boy that brought back memories! And, when I left alI I could think about were the 2 sandos I had...they were Amazing! ☆☆☆☆☆

Google
I just wanted to let you all know whenever my wife and I would visit this Boudin location we always enjoyed our meals. There were other places to eat nearby, but we would always come back to Boudin for their fresh sandwiches and salads because they were always consistently good and a friendly staff as well. They have nice, outdoor seating as well. Good food and good people are always a plus...you will find it here.

Google
Nice atmosphere, kind of like Panera but a bit better. Food was good, generous portion on the salad but a bit expensive. I thought the clam chowder was not the best I’ve had, but the bread was great.

Google
We stopped in for a quick bite. The food is served cafeteria style, order at the counter, then the food is brought to your table. Crab was special on the menu, so we got the crab melt. It came with a choice of salad or a bag of kettle chips. That came out quickly, however we had to ask for our loaf of bread that we ordered at the same time. Outside seating is available.

Google
The Tuna melt was really delicious. The crusted heese on the sourdough was a great addition. My wife loved the Italian Chop Salad, and the feedback from here was fantastic. The sourdogh was worth the drive. Added to the original as wife just made sourdough french toast with fresh blueberry compote. She used the soughrdogh bowl and made large slices. Fantastc. I can't wait to get back to San Fransisco to get more.

Google
Maybe it was over hyped to me. You order at a cashier and take a number: if you've ever been to a Panerra Bread, it's a similar format. I asked the cashier for the two most popular sandwiches. He recommended the Turkey Avacado and since it was also in the Boudin "classics" i ordered that. It was fine. Bread was mushy, sliced deli turkey, avocado was perfect, mayonnaise. Green salad was fresh. Good value for money. Wish I'd ordered something with sourdough. I would eat here for healthy options better than a food court.

Google
I love boudins, but this location is not it. 2nd time I’ve ordered for pick up and they completely butchered the order. This time, the bread was completely burnt, not “toasted.” Clearly someone ran it through their toaster twice (cheese looked fried) and instead of remaking it, they said “meh” and threw together a burnt sandwich for me. It literally tasted like charcoal - and ended up in the trash. Also, there was no sauce on it - the other sandwich in the order was no sauce, but this one was regular. Another thing, we upgraded one of the salads to a Caesar, and they gave us a teaspoon worth of dressing… Honestly, won’t go back unless under new management - their kitchen practices cannot be trusted. Tried to call to complain, no one answered, so I guess this is next best thing.

Google
I'm always indecisive with my lunch... boudin has a great selection, fresh bread to awesome combos when you can't decide between soup, salad, or sandwhich. To-go orders from this place always keep me fed until I'm off work. Always fresh food and friendly service. I eat here about 3-4 times a week. Even Busy Rush, the staff is still friendly and on top of everything.

Yelp
Haven't been here in many moons but stopped in for an early lunch on Saturday. Beat the lunch rush and all inside tables were full by 1:30 when we left. They've added to their menu since my last visit and now offer French fries! I tried the crispy chicken Parmesan grilled sandwich, a new offering, with French fries, and my lunch was delicious. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
On a Saturday evening in mid May, my family and I had diner there. It's located next to Cheesecake Factory. No greeting, We ordered at the tablet. The half sandwich -chicken pesto and clam chowder bread soup of extra $1.00 for bread bowl 13.99. We were waiting on food and slow. The soup was thick and delicious and chicken pesto was good too. Plenty of tables and looked clean. Plenty of parking outside.

Yelp
I come over to this shopping mall once a week. I enjoy eating here a couple of times a month. Today have a cup of their classic tomato soup and pizza. The service is great and the staff are professional and helpful. The ambiance is warm and welcoming.

Yelp
I thought things would've changed, but I showed up again after not coming here for about a year and employees are still eating breakfast and just staring at me as I wait in the morning for someone to get up and help me. Finally a younger kid got up from his food to take my order. I guess they just don't care about their customers!

Yelp
We ordered food yesterday afternoon around 12:30 inside the restaurant using the QR code on the wall. It said our order would be ready by 12:49. We noticed the people in front of us were receiving their orders before ours so we checked in at the counter. They mentioned it would take another 4 minutes. At around 1:15 I checked in with another worker and they hadn't even put together our order. When we finally received our order at around 1:20, half of our order was missing. They went back to make 2 salads and a sandwich. I then had to ask for our cookies and water bottles for the kids meals. It was the worst service I have received. When we finally sat down to eat, my apple, walnut salad had the asian chicken salad dressing with it. I was so disappointed! I will not be going back.

Yelp
I ordered food. To go at 2:16 pm. It's 2:33 pm just got food. Unacceptable. Hire more help

Yelp
I am a regular here. In the colder months, I crave the tuna melt with tomato soup, and in warmer months I enjoy all of the salads particularly the Cobb salad. The rewards program can't be beat (free sourdough loaf with purchase every month) and the staff are so generous. Today they ran out of tomato soup and gave me a complimentary sourdough loaf and salad, in addition to my replacement choice of butternut squash soup!

Yelp
I have to recognize that everyone was out shopping and the mall was crowded as was the restruant. It took 23 minutes for our burger and salad and an additional 7 minutes after that for our milkshakes to come. The kitchen and support staff were working hard. They did their best to keep the tables clean. My father liked his burger. He remembers when he worked for the boudin bakery in San Franciso briefly as a young man. He kept telling me how Boudin used a special mother for its sourdough. My salad was disappointing. I had an Asian Chicken salad. The cucumbers were bad. They looked like they had been frozen, all watery and translucent. The chicken was sliced paper thin. There wasn't much of it. There was a lot of mixed greens and a good handful of red bell pepper. The salad was very dry. There was a little dressing at the bottom of the bowl. I cannot recommend this salad. I hope the staff is recognized and rewarded for their hard work.

Yelp
When you're at an upscale outdoor shopping mall in Marin County, you expect to get a lot of great eateries. However, choices at the Village at Corte Madera. You have full on sit-down places such as "Cheesecake Factory" "Bazille" (inside Nordstrom) and the fancy "RH Rooftop Restaurant". Other than that, there's not much to choose from. This is where "Boudin SF" comes in as I prefer a place where I order it at the register and they bring your food out to you. To those that know this shopping center well, Boudin has been here for a long time, actually dating back to the late-1990's. Their previous location was at a different site in the same part of the center but their current location is a much larger area with an abundance of indoor seating. Since I was hungry, I decided to come here for lunch on the afternoon of Saturday 10/7/2023 at around 1:15pm. As expected, it was busy but I was helped fairly quickly. I ended up ordering their 'Chicken Pesto Sandwich"; this consisted of all natural chicken breast, tomatoes, arugula, balsamic vinaigrette, and pesto mayo on a sourdough baguette. I paired this up with a crisp green salad and a medium fountain drink. After paying (which was around $18), I was handed a number and my sandwich/salad was brought to my table in less than 10 minutes. The sandwich itself is definitely above average but the real winner here is that chewy sourdough bread. It was heavenly and absolutely raised the bar on this while the pieces of chicken and other fillings were just average to me. I think if you want to keep in safe, definitely get a sandwich or even better, their sourdough bread bowl (which includes yummy clam chowder). I do remember when Boudin used to be a much smaller company. But having expanded over the past couple decades, the sourdough novelty wore off. However, my meal was good while prices were decent and service was above average. My rating for the Corte Madera "Boudin SF"; an above average four stars.

Yelp
It aight. Their DoorDash menu is about as confusing as a polar bear taking a beach vacation but it's never bad. Except the pizza. The pizza is bad. But it's a sandwich place so tbf the pizza doesn't have to be excellent. Service is unmemorable which is fine. It's all fine idk.

Yelp
I have to say that Karen is an amazing employee! She is so nice and SO customer service oriented... I come here all the time for my employer and when she is working, I don't have to worry about my order being wrong or being dismissed (like you often encounter these days). I hope you keep good employees like her!
google avatar

Yelp
A favorite Boudin location is Corte Madera. ~Love Sourdough! Always delicious soups and sandwiches and the best cheesy garlic bread around. The tuna melt is good and my son loves the milkshakes and the little sourdough turtles that come with the kids meals. The cookies are also very good.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches, just as I remember them. The turkey havarti and the classic italian, both on sourdough baguettes, make the trip to the Bay worth it! While there, also grabbed some canned clam chowder for later and some sourdough bread to bring home as gifts. Service was friendly and efficient. Food came out fast. The seating areas, both inside and out, were clean and appealing with plenty of natural light and comfortable seating. And, they have the best sourdough in the world!

Ana M.

Yelp
I'm writing this in hopes that corporate Boudin takes a look at the quality of their food and really makes some improvements. The clam chowder was really off tasting and fishy. The bread wasn't that great. The sandwiches are mediocre. The pizza is really the worst thing on the menu. The cheese is not melted and the toppings are just terrible. The only thing that I can say is pretty great are the fountain drinks. How sad is that? Please accept the hard feedback and make some improvements.

Aileen M.

Yelp
I feel bad because these workers are overworked but this place needs to hire more people, it should not take me 20 mins for a salad. But again I hope they hire more people to help out. This isn't the team's fault that they seem understaffed.
google avatar

Yelp
Always a reliable go-to. You just can't beat their sourdough. We usually get takeout, but the indoor and outdoor dining areas are ok.
google avatar

Charlie R.

Yelp
Ordered Mac and cheese which took 20 minutes to get. The Mac and cheese was cold so we asked them to heat it up. They brought the dish back 15 min later still completely cold in a different bowl. We didn't want to wait again so we left hungry.
google avatar

Lunell G.

Yelp
The service was good, the cashier was very polite and patient taking my order. I ordered the open face crab melt with salad. The Salad was okay , just thrown together. The crab melt was messy and very salty. I spoke with cashier and I traded sandwiches for cheese toast. Well when they finally brought it out it was luke warm. The staff were nice though.
google avatar

Yelp
Very prompt service, the food was well prepared and delivered quickly. A staff person checked in with me to assure that I was satisfied. Lunch was delicious and filling. Clean Bathrooms, nice vibe. Overall, a great road-trip lunch stop. Conveniently located off the freeway.
google avatar

Yelp
Haven't had boudin in a minute. This time around has the classic clam chowder in a bread bowl which was so good. A little too many potatoes for my liking but still a classic. Their sourdough, as usual, nailed it. I really like their chocolate sourdough which I didn't see at this location but the sf location always has.
google avatar

Lawrence F.

Yelp
It's an okay place to get a sandwich. For what I ordered, it was quicker to use the self-service pad than wait for the unatintive staff.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Yes and again yes! The clam chowder is San Francisco. The sourdough bread omg they have old ingredient that they add to every batch to make sure it's sour fresh and good! Take the kids the kids menu is on point the pizza nice size and delicious. They get a cookie and drink plus bread! Good pick

Yelp
Located inside the mall complex. No wait. Clam chowder bread soup: Flavors were fine, but nothing special. Impossible burger: Impossible meat was solid and cooked well. Classic French dip sandwich: Pretty sad and disappointing. The meat was dry and lacked much flavor. Wouldn't get again. Overall, I think if I thought of Boudin more in the Panera/Corner Bakery category, I would have been less disappointing. The quality has dipped a bit since they've expanded to multiple locations.
google avatar

Ethan C.

Yelp
Boudin is a nice place to get a quick and easy lunch at the mall. The chicken salad sandwich was pretty good. The side tomato soup was also really good. However, they forgot to give me free side of chips that was supposed to come with the sandwich. The tables outside could have been cleaned more frequently. They are not the cleanest to be eating on.

Yelp
We went to Corte Madera to shop me and my mom she got a little hungry. She requested to go to boden she loves their chili with the bread bowl when it came out it was super dry. It didn't even taste like chili. I mentioned it to the manager she says because of the end of the night I didn't really understand what she meant. she felt so bad she offered us money back bread food to take home but the aspect of it she served us bad food will not return ever

Yelp
Years ago I was a cyclist and a group of us would stop off at the Boudin in Tiburon and order sandwiches. Without fail I would always get the Turkey Cranberry. The other day I was in Corte Madera and just lit up when I looked at the Boudin. On my way back to my car I just had to go in and place an order. When I saw the Turkey Cranberry Sandwich was still in the menu, I laughed and decided to order. There were quite a few people ahead of me at the counter, so when I saw an ordering kiosk I decided to give it a try. Ordering was super simple and I don't think I waited more than 10 minutes for my sandwich. I had to take it to go as I was in a hurry. When I got to my car and opened it up, I was more than pleased. The sandwich looked exactly the same. The bread was flavorful, great texture. The Turkey was juicy and paired perfectly with the tart cranberry and crunchy fresh lettuce. It was exactly as I remembered. It came with a side salad which was okay. The dressing was way too sweet, but I normally don't use any so that's just me. I'm happy I stopped in, just a great experience.

Yelp
You've earned your 5th star with your killer BLT. Boudin took something simple and classic, and made it even better. The seasonings are perfectly balanced - sweet, spicy, salty...the right amount of flavor and kick to heighten an already wonderful type of sandwich. Shout-out to my homegirl for introducing me to this sandwich. I don't usually order it when I'm out because most places can't seem to get the bacon just the way I like it: soft. Boudin aced it so much so that I went back the next day. I literally just finished the sandwich and am now wondering why I didn't order a second. Oh right...it's because I stopped eating bacon...until now. The only aspect that I would change is a lighter toast on the bread, but that didn't stop me from devouring the sandwich. The tissues of my mouth are all cut up from top to bottom, but it was so WORTH IT. I realized that I am writing an entire review about one item, but it's really that good! Or maybe I just really miss bacon...either way, you got me hooked Boudin! Also, bonus points for still giving your loyal rewards members free bread loaves! I know what sandwiches I'll be making with mine

Yelp
Very popular place to eat at Fisherman's Wharf. Food is very expensive but is to be expected in a tourist area. I wouldn't normally eat here except that we were hosting family from out of state. I like all the outdoor seating. It's great on nice days. Food is good but nothing over the top. Clam chowder in a bread bowl is a must.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
Finally heard from Susie R. Well, actually Arturo, a very pleasant manager at this location. I explained my experience and Arturo was very understanding and apologetic. To be fair, maybe I just didn't understand. Arturo told me to come in again and to ask for him to make things right. 5 stars for responding to my Yelp review!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here to get a freshly made clam chowder bowl (freshly made sourdough that morning). Cost about $13. Staff was very friendly and orders were taken and made fast. There's an option for indoor dining and outdoor dining. For indoor you now have to show proof of vaccination and photo ID. One less star because the Boudin tour didn't open until 12 noon. Pricing here is about expected for a touristy place. Their bakers displayed an alligator and turtle for me to take photos. Plus they have Boudin souvenirs for purchase as well. Will definitely come back again when I'm back in SF.
google avatar

Yelp
Hamburger used to be juicy, meaty and delicious. Today, mostly filler mixed with meat and hint of cardboard. Asked for sourdough roll, arrived in bun. Wife asked for cup of soup, got charged for bread bowl. Bathroom has large sign requiring employees to wash hands with soap, but soap dispenser was empty. How low it has fallen. Skip this one if you are looking for edible food.
google avatar

Yelp
I came here as I wanted clam chowder in San Francisco. I live in LA and we have this bread company here also. The combination of the two was the best. The clam chowder had great flavor. The best part of the soup is eating in a bread bowl. This place also sells sourdough bread in shape of animals for you to purchase. I recommend this place or any of there San Francisco locations for great bread and soup

Monica S.

Yelp
I was out shopping in Corte Madera and stopped at Boudin. I am always disappointed with their salad the portions aren't good and they always only give me a small dressing cup for my salad. The workers there use the same gloves when cleaning the tables and handling food. My friend got food poisoning from their chili beans. I will not recommend eating here unless you don't mind being disappointed.
google avatar

Jon M.

Yelp
I love sourdough bread so I had to give it a try. I ordered the Pick 2 and got the Asian Salad with 1/2 a Jalapeño Cheddar Patty Melt. The salad is a meal in its self. The Patty Melt came out as a grilled cheese with no patty. I let the woman know that my sandwich was incomplete and she made me a fresh "whole" patty melt ! The food was very good, but that bread !!! So good

Yelp
Horrible customer service and bland food. My aunts and I decided to have lunch here for the first time instead of Cheesecake Factory which was a huge mistake. We walked in and as we were looking at the menu and trying to decide for the first time (mind you, no one behind us), the cashier is rushing to take our order. This employee seemed like he did not want to be there or talk to anyone at all, very unfriendly. I ordered an impossible burger with NO cheese and NO mayo. My aunt ordered a chowder bread bowl. We open our order, my burger had both cheese and mayo on it, and the bread bowl was missing. We had to dreadfully approach the employee who didn't seem like he wanted to be there. No apology, eye contact, and barely even an acknowledgment of the error. Thankfully we finally got our order but we would've been better off getting Mcdonald's. This was our first and last experience at this place. Do not recommend.

Yelp
You can't beat this San Francisco staple. The one by Fisherman's Wharf is quite the experience. The service is solid and the food is great. Lots of options, the soup and seafood in a bread bowl is great. And just getting the main staple item of sourdough is a can't miss. Cause it's in everything, so you really can't miss it.
google avatar

Sean G.

Yelp
Yes it's going to be busy, yes it's a tourist place, yes they have things you can find at the airport. Your going to have the experience and be at a Boudin. stop bashing on things like they are the best it's should be the best all the time. Remember People are human and sometimes it might hav whist been a bad day. Today was not one of those days. We ordered food with our group of 4 from the pizza out back, the counter up front and the bread side counter. We got a smorgasbord of goodness. the pulled pork sandwich was great i was happy it was a vinegar coleslaw. I enjoyed it and wanted more. then we had a margarita pizza it was good light and easy. perfect for the person who says i am not that hungry then eats all your fries! also got the dungeons crab sandwich. this was great i love and miss the taste of Dungeons crab but for those who have not experienced it, know it's a fishy taste. not bad but i know some people don't like that. We got a sourdough turtle that was gone almost prior to hitting our table. They are great as a pocket snack. Also come in bears and other cute shapes. The lines can move fast and sometimes slow remember there are language barriers and tourist who can't decide. people take your take and enjoy trust me they have a lot to look at. Price guess what you are going to pay the same almost anywhere. it's worth going to the large hub here to see it all in action. make sure you check out the window outside that shows the workers working. it's a blast and it is a free show. your also near an arcade, and other great attractions so don't come just for some amazing bread check out the area as well. There is not a trip i have been on thur SF that didn't involve a stop here. Thank you for the great service and memorable bread. Also just for those that care i live in Alaska and we have sourdough it has never tasted like it does here. the sea salt air or fog of the bay adds some kind of magic that i truly miss in my sourdough.

Yelp
(+) Butternut squash soup Boudin SF for those of you who don't know, is known for their San Francisco sourdough bread. The consistency and freshness of the bread is enough to base their whole menu off it. Boudin offers a variety of soups with the bread bowl, sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and sweet treats to finish off the meal. This location is within the village at Corte Madera. It's nice to have a Boudin restaurant outside of the City. Food: I ordered the beef chili in the bread bowl. It is garnished off with chopped onions and cheddar cheese. The beef chili itself was good but not exceptional. I could pass on this next time because of the many other options, but it was comforting. It was lacking in flavor, but I could skip it for next time. The butternut squash soup was excellent. The consistency and texture of the soup was spot on. It had more of a milkier consistency compared to other places. Service: The service is excellent. There are servers who circulate the restaurant who will help you with your needs. The food comes out in a decent amount of time. Ambiance: The restaurant is kept clean. The floors are swept and it is kept at a comfortable temperature. I would recommend dining here for any event. Overall, I love Boudin SF, and having the opportunity to enjoy it without having to go into the city is a nice treat. As a resident of SoCal, Boudin is always on the top of my list of places to eat when I make my trips up to the Bay.

Yelp
This is a easy order and pick up . Classic . My friend ordered a roast beef w cheddar , said it was very good . I had just had eaten at home . So really nothing looked that tempting . They do nice bread . The seasonal stuff does look good .

Yelp
Super super slow service. Our order was wrong and it took a long time again to get a replacement. We stopped here for a bathroom break and to plug the car in at the Tesla supercharger, expecting a quick ~15% charge at their slower "city" superchargers. The kids said they were hungry so we walked over for a quick bite. That didn't work out so well--we were there for so long that the car was completely charged by the time we got back to it. The food was pretty tasty typical Boudin fare. I won't give them less than 4 stars because everyone is affected by Covid, and it's likely they were short staffed because of it. My company is certainly going through personnel issues because of the pandemic.

Yelp
Went to the kiosk to self order. Ordered chicken salad sandwich with side salad. Added 2 baguettes to order. Computer stopped me saying the baguettes are unavailable. We asked the young man (dark hair, skinny, maybe 5'5") for help. He said he'd check on his computer. Came back and said he couldn't help. So my mom had to go into the normal line. Was expecting him to help her right away at cash register. He did not. Instead my mom had to wait. I was expecting " oh let me help you. No need to wait in line." But no. Next I waited in line for a simple sandwich, or at least what I thought would be simple. Waited almost 30 min for sandwich to be made. A server (young male, glasses like Harry Potter, light brown long hair) made a few jokes trying to be funny. Not the wisest to make Jokes to a hungry person who has been waiting considerably long for their order. After awhile i asked him to check. He brought my order to me and made another corny joke. I was very annoyed by that point. Should've just went for a refund. This place has gone downhill. Also they didn't give much filling in my sandwich. Also they were stingy om butter for my 2 baguettes. They didn't want to give me that much.

Yelp
I was reminded today of why I do not frequent this eatery. This particular location has very little to offer when it comes to an eating experience. After ordering one of their new jalapeños cheddar pulled pork sandwiches, I was served just a jalapeño melted cheese sandwich. After bringing it up to the servers attention, I could hear the laughter and physically see the cooks in the back literally throw cold pulled pork and just stuff it into the sandwich and given back to me. The meat was obviously old and cold. As I left the establishment you can hear the staff laughing as they literally watched me walk out the door. All because I requested to be served the meal I ordered and paid for. The second star rating was merely because the chocolate cookies my children got were decent. Do not recommend.

Yelp
Dirty. Bad staff. Spent over $100 for 4 people and they say I can't use the restrooms! Don't waste your money if you don't want to pay somewhere else to use their restrooms. Horrible place.

Yelp
Huge salads, good soup, sourdough bowl was exceptionally fresh, where after the soup, I easily folded it in half and was chewy and "sourdoughy". Very nice! Lots of outside seating if you have a pet.

Yelp
This is the best and only place to get San Francisco French Bread. Hands down! Freshly made daily. I remember years ago when you could go over to the City at night and watch them make bread. Sometimes the Baker would come out and give you some, freshly made. Bread bowl soups is not only for cold weather, sometimes they are just because soups. Instagram @planefoodies

Yelp
I visit Boudin today at 12:54pm and order a Turkey Cranberry sandwich. I ask the lady who took my order if I can substitute the turkey for ham and she replied yes. I received my order and left to go home only to find out they gave me a sandwich with no meat. I was given a sandwich that only had lettuce, cranberry sauce and red onions. I tried calling boudin however no one answer. I left a voice message and no one has gotten back to me. I paid 10 dollars just for two slices of bread, lettuce, onions and cranberries sauce. I will NEVER eat there again. My check out number was 1096 and the name of the lady who took my order was Elodia C.

Yelp
I don't really like going to chains and I'm not a big fan of sourdough. I was hungry though, and this was a fast lunch option. I went with the steak salad. I liked all the ingredients in my salad, but it was heavy with dressing. I didn't finish the salad and added more greens to it when I got home. The clam chowder was nice though! It seems to be a popular lunch spot, because there was a constant stream of diners.
