Lazu - Review - 9th Arr. - Paris - The Infatuation

"One reason we’ll never tire of bistronomy: Lazu. This restaurant in SoPi effortlessly fuses the comfort of a bistro with fine dining codes to deliver meals you’ll be talking about for months. Cozy up with someone you like at a window table and dig into their seasonally driven dishes that are pretty enough to be in the Louvre. You might find an ode to autumn in the form of seasonal wild mushrooms glazed in meat jus and paired with rich brioche topped with chestnut paste, all settled in a vegetal spinach mousseline, or a decadent pâté en croûte with tender potato and bright chive cream. Whatever you choose is worthy of analysis, and luckily, the discreet yet present service makes it easy to luxuriate and linger over every last bit." - Emily Monaco

LAZU

"The chef was second in command to Bruno Doucet for three years at La Régalade St-Honoré – so he knows the ropes! Here, he serves up well-crafted bistronomy fare with inspired associations of high-quality seasonal ingredients. The menu changes weekly, but specialities such as caramelised veal sweetbreads and pâté with a potato crust have been permanent fixtures since the restaurant opened. Inviting atmosphere." - Michelin Inspector

Loved the atmosphere and the food—they were amazing, even though a bit pricey. We paid 78€ per person. The red mullet was much tastier than the duck, and the pavlova was like a little piece of heaven for anyone who loves sour desserts. The staff were super nice (special thanks to the lovely lady who sang Dancing Queen with me 💕). I can totally guarantee you’ll have a great night here!

We finally made it to this spot after walking past it for 2 years, and I can only say I regret not trying it sooner. We went with friends, a French couple, and decided to go all in. We ordered all then starters on the menu to share: the poultry liver terrine with Porto and hazelnuts, the razor clams with candied ginger, the chanterelles in meat jus with tomatoes and poppy seed, and the parmesan tartlet with pickled mushrooms and saffron zucchini. Every plate was excellent and not one was disappointing. For mains, we tried the gnocchi with parmesan cream, fresh figs and tarragon sorbet, the roasted duck breast with Provençal olive polenta. We also added the pigeon to share which was the special of the day. Apparently, the restaurant speciality is "Ris de Veau" (Sweetbread) but we didn't get to it. The presentation is worthy of a Michelin star. The flavors are refined and creative, also very much worthy of a star. Service was equally impressive. The lady serving us was not only attentive and professional but also warm, handling our banter with charm and a laugh. Fast service too, though to be fair it was a quiet day with only a few tables filled. For lunch, they actually offer a two course menu at 26 euros or a three course menu at 32 euros from Tuesday to Friday, which is a steal for this level of food. Very bistronomie, especially for the 9th arrondissement. We went off menu, of course, because celery (and there is only one choice per course in the menu) wasn’t calling my name that day, and we ended up paying about 360 euros for the whole table (90 euros per person including the tip and a nice Red Châteauneuf du Pape 2019). Not especially cheap, but worth every cent given the quality. I also noticed they opened a little comptoir across the street for lighter bites, which I will definitely try next time. In short, excellent food, beautiful presentation, genuinely kind service, and a lunch deal that is hard to beat (if you get it). Definitely recommend it and easily one of the best finds in the neighborhood.

We had a fantastic meal here. A small restaurant which has a cozy, friendly atmosphere. Would recommend booking. The menu is quite modern and everything we had was delicious. Really good value with a strong wine list.

Food and service were incredible. The wine pairing was very good as well. I would expect slightly bigger portions of the main dish, (it was almost the size of entrée), but it was very tasty. They also give you small compliments from the chef - those things are delicious!

The staff were very attentive and friendly, the food and wine were excellent. We were offered complimentary treats before and after the meal, which was such a sweet gesture🙏🏻

Overall, I don't recommend Lazu for what it delivers. 1. Food: The restaurant often asks 35+ euros for a main dish, so I'll judge it by the standards of such price range: Although the fish was ok, there's nothing in there that justify the price. The jus was a bit salty, the vegetables had a good texture, but the flavors were mid at best. The overall concept for the dishes seemed to be flawed, shallow. The only really good thing that was worth its price was the chocolate mousse with olive oil — This is something to be praised in the restaurant. 2. The staff was friendly, but they seem to need more training — in terms of knowing better what they serve, what goes into the dishes, what is the wine offer. For the record, I don't really expect perfection, but the table did notice a degree of cluelessness. Also, I'm sure the person can and wants to do a good job — it sounds like a typical case where the restaurant hired someone and didn't train the staff enough.
