The 14 Best Black-Owned Restaurants In Houston

"Lo-fi and relaxed, Bourbon Sizzler, a Caribbean restaurant in the Medical Center, runs a steady takeout operation, so the dining room is mostly free for you to hunker down with a hearty meal, whether you come for a quick lunch or a much-needed comfort dinner. The best dishes here are the jerk chicken that’s coated in scotch bonnet, the oxtail with enough rice and peas to grab every drop of gravy, and a spicy beef patty that might make your eyes water. The 13 Best Restaurants In The Medical Center - Houston - The Infatuation

"The Bourbon Sizzler, a counter-service Caribbean restaurant, is a great place to melt the day away with spicy beef patties with flaky crusts, sweet brown stew chicken with rice and cabbage, and sweet ting soda. This is primarily a takeout operation, but there is a dining room that's mostly free for you to hunker down with a hearty meal. The 6 Best Places For Oxtail in Houston

"While the Bourbon Sizzler, a Caribbean restaurant in the Medical Center, is modest, it’s also home to some of the most impressive braised oxtails we’ve ever had. The smoked, tender pieces of oxtails are good enough to stand on their own, but we love that they come with a mountain of rice and peas, and of course a pool of gravy. Hovel them to your heart’s content while you rest assured that there’ll be enough oxtails left over for at least another meal." - gianni greene

Google
The food was sooooo delicious and flavorful. I love that they have vegetarian options. I ordered a plate with peas and rice, veggies, macaroni & cheese, fried plantain, and a side order of the jerk fries. I also had the Sunday special drink and that was good as well. The place only had a few people sitting at the bar and a couple people came and went so it isn't a super busy or packed place. Food was perfect, no complaints. I actually went here in place of another caribbean restaurant that happened to be closed that Sunday. I'm glad I've gave this place a chance. Will definitely be back whenever I'm on that side of town.

Google
A few takeaways from our first & probably last visit... 1) Drinks.... The Long Islands had too much cola. I ordered 3 because everything else seemed really sweet. BUT... for $5 during Happy Hour, I can't really complain too much. And the bartender girl was sweet. 2) Food.... While the food was decently flavored (not delicious enough for me to go out of my way to return but not completely forgettable either), both our oxtails AND stewed chicken came out pretty much room temperature. I considered sending it back but didn't want to offend the chef (he happened to step out as we were ordered & he seems cool) so we just ate what we could & took the rest to heat properly at home. 3) "SERVICE CHARGE" ---- When I went to pay, the total seemed a little higher than it should have been so I asked to view the itemized & discovered there was a 10% "Service Charge" - when I inquired with our waiter, he informed me that charge automatically gets added to every ticket over $50. That makes ZERO sense to me - the more I buy, the higher my service charge??? What??? The service fee also made me tip our server 15% instead of my usual 20-25% which sucks for their staff. It's unfortunate because we passionately support local, minority owned businesses but I can't get over the tomfoolery of the theory behind that service fee. I was really hoping this could become a good watering hole for us to become regulars. Pro Tip: If my daughter & I ever do decide to return, we'll be paying separately to avoid the unnecessary foolishness of a service fee & will instead tip our server well.

Google
I ordered a “meal” through Too Good To Go. I received 4 chicken jerk drummettes that were the same size as the 1 1/2 inch pieces of plantain and a small portion of rice and peas (best part of what I received). The photo attached shows the amount of food next to a $1 bill. It was like an appetizer portion in a mall box usually used for side items like French fries but advertised as a meal. The chicken had little flavor or spice. Not a place I would visit again.

Google
I strongly would not recommend eating here. There was a roach smashed on the inside of our carryout plate. Disgusting! Ruined my appetite. Do not eat here for your own sanity. This is probably the worst place in Houston. I'm convinced.

Google
We pick this place at random. We did not read any reviews before arriving. At first glance we were a bit skeptical. I honestly thought I walked into a bar. The place was also empty, so I have to admit I was a bit nervous. The atmosphere was a bit off-putting, nonetheless we ordered food. Then we went to read the reviews. 😑 I immediately felt we were making a bad choice. We even thought about just leaving. However, we wanted to give it a chance, and stayed. The food arrived in a timely fashion. In such a time that was not too long that it got frustrating, and not too fast that we thought the food was old or questionable. Instead we were given what you see in the photos I took. Curry chicken and Jerk chicken plates (small size). The food was hot, flavorful, and delicious! I was very surprised, having read some of the reviews. We were glad we stayed, and I would encourage you to take a leap of faith and try this place out. The place may give off a certain vibe, but the food is well worth it all. Especially the jerk chicken!!! Oh yea, I waited to write this several hours later to make sure i didn’t experience any post-lunch sickness - I know how some of y’all think! No issues. Again, the food is great.

Google
Mannnnn! (in my Big Moe voice) If you have not been to this spot please do yourself a favor and go. My first time visiting and I am in love. I ordered curry chicken, cabbage, plantain, rice, and peas. It was freaking phenomenal. I finished my entire plate. I had 2 Hurricane drinks which were strong. Don't sleep on this place.

I’m a daytime customer, usually during or shortly after my work day. The atmosphere is great and the food, even better! I’ve never had a bad dish or less than exemplary service. Erica is the best! Always warm, welcoming, and ready to provide. Her vibration is unmatched; in proper yard gyal fashion! Go now, you won’t be disappointed!! -

Yelp
I came here for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. The owner Ericka explained it was there soft opening. As they had just moved from Bourban Sizzler @ 2114 Holly Hall to two doors down to Irie Sizzler @ 2122 Holly Hall. But it's the same owners. Designed with fun Jamaican decor. Service - Ericka the owner/server was great. She chatted with us, was friendly. Provided good service. There was a DJ spinning some great tunes, for there soft opening. Food - I ordered the oxtail combo $29.49, which comes with rice/peas and cabbage and 2 plantains. With the combo you are allowed one additional meat of jerk chicken or stewed chicken, or curry goat (I think). The food was tasty. Plan to visit again. She also offered chicken soup, which was yum, great on the cool day. Drinks - I asked Ericka if they sold adult bevy's, as I had seen on the Bourban Sizzler Yelp page. She said no, but they had some carribean soft drinks and juices. I got the pineapple & Guava, expectedly sweet, but not overbearing. Wishing this black owned business much succes.

Yelp
Food is not tea. Oxtails aren't tender. Rice undercooked. Cabbage..NOO seasoning. 4/10

Yelp
Couldn't think of a better place to celebrate National Margarita Day! The staff is exceptional they are so welcoming and attentive. This place has great food, good drinks and plenty of seating. Asia made me some great margaritas! Can't wait to go back for a meal, a drink, and of course a vibe!

Yelp
Got a too good to go surprise bag $6.48, the food came hot and fresh so I was excited. However, I definitely expected more food for the value given that it's the "special" bag and compared to other too good to go value bags. The food itself is pretty average / good compared to all the Jamaican food I've had. Heard some people on google reviews had stomach issues with it so we'll find out! Service - fast and nice staff Ambiance - it was empty inside apart from people getting takeouts and a man drunk/out at the bar

Yelp
This is a cute restaurant off if 610 and close to downtown. It has a nice bar and space to host a party. We went on a Sunday and tbe service and food were an A+. We ordered 2 lg oxtail plates and I love their seasoning and sauce. They have happy hour all day on Sunday and the rum punch was too good. This is my maybe third time going and i will def be back.
google avatar

Audia M.

Yelp
Ordered their food yesterday and was super disappointed. Their portion sizes are so small and (2) other plates I ordered showed "available " but when I received my order they claimed both plates were "out of stock". The curry goat was mostly bone with only a teaspoon of meat. From now on my only options for Jamaican will be Cool Runnings or Golden Krust -- I'm done with BS (Bourbon Sizzler lol)
google avatar

Briann R.

Yelp
This food is done if THE best Jamaican food in Houston. Good Jamaican food is hard to come by in Texas so if you are having a craving come here. Also great deals daily on drinks!
google avatar

Yelp
placed an order using the TGTG app; the food was delicious!! amazing portions for the price paid. the service was really really great and the ambiance was nice. i will be back in to try their lunch specials as well as their DAILY happy hour and it definitely looks like the bartender knows how to pour a good drink.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
Overall, the Bourbon Sizzler's jerk chicken with rice and peas was satisfying, but I'd prefer more sauce on the side. Opted for takeout. In and out is my preferred choice for a quick meal, given the outside activity levels.

Elicia M.

Yelp
So disappointed! I haven't ate here in a couple of months but I never would have expected the food to be so off. The oxtail were not seasoned the same, not tender & had a sweet taste to them. Not to mention the beef patty was soooooo greasy it needed a couple of napkins to allow it to drain more. I think the place has switched owners there is no way the same people are cooking.
google avatar

Tia S.

Yelp
I came here for drinks with a couple of coworkers. I hadn't been in years and was actually surprised this place was still in business. It was pretty empty with just one bartender/server. We sat at a table and service was pretty timely. I appreciated that since a lot of times when places are empty the employees tend to disappear for long periods of time. After mistakenly quoting happy hour prices, the server said she would give us the happy hour prices anyway (it was about an hour away from happy hour). This place isn't much to look at and is in a shopping center with other small businesses. I have eaten before but not on this visit. The drinks here are strong and easily accessible from NRG or the medical center, so when I am here..it's typically because I was close by and wanted a drink.

Yelp
Eat at your own risk lol. The food and service is inconsistent. I assume since they have changed the name the restaurant is under new management and so the experience is definitely different. The inside was very dim... no island music playing just some guy at the front taking your order while on his personal phone. The customer service wasn't bad but it also wasn't great. The restaurant was pretty dead when I arrived. I was able to place my order and get my food pretty fast. Upon opening my small curry plate, it was definitely the smallest portion of curry chicken I have ever received from this restaurant. I guess they are cutting back. My portion size should have been on the appetizer side. The favor was there, I could taste the authentic Jamaican food but it was just OK. I guess I want more from this place since it's one of the only places in the area that serves Jamaican food. I am not sure I will be back but then again I tell myself that all the time and 3 months later I am back... always slightly disappointed lol

Yelp
It's not even located on Bourbon Street, or even within 5 hours of it. False advertising? Bourbon Sizzler aka Island Sizzler aka Indian Sizzler is definitely a very popular Jamaican restaurant and it takes over a spot that has had so many other Sizzlers (such as Island Sizzler which was very similar and Indian Sizzler which was quite different). No matter what the Sizzler, it's always been a good place to eat and now is not an exception. Yes there are some dishes that aren't as good as others and yes they're not the cheapest considering the neighbourhood, but it's still a great place to come and get food.

Niecee S.

Yelp
If I could give a 3.8 star rating I would and here's why: * The jerk chicken was great seasoned well and not under or overcooked but I didn't understand them not having jerk wings available since it is a Caribbean restaurant but the chicken was good so a win is a win on that. * Rice and peas were fine and not over/uncooked either but thankfully I ordered oxtail gravy which literally made it amazing! * Plantains were top tier! Love a good sweet savory plantain and that made the meal not overall not so great because for the next one. * Cabbage gave very much high blood pressure immediately. No exaggeration, it tasted as if they made the cabbage in saltwater literally. 0/10 for the cabbage without a doubt. * Price point was great for the amount of food received. * Delivery packaging could be much better (sticker, seal or even double knotting the bags for safety purposes).
google avatar

Greg R.

Yelp
Authentic taste , pleasant service. Everything I ate there in several visits tasted "cooked to order ". Which would explain the wait ! Ok, so this is Caribbean place. Everything is Irie!
google avatar

Madisyn F.

Yelp
I'm usually a Cool runnings Jamaican grill and bar fan and that's where I'll stick to ordering from now on. When my food was delivered I had one scoop of cabbage that was smashed into the plate, 2 small plantain, some goat curry and rice and peas. Half of the food was inedible. One of my plantain was extremely dry, the goat was rubbery and fatty with a lot of salt and mostly bones, the rice and peas was not good and I didn't even touch the cabbage. This "large plate" was $27. I get twice the amount for $20 at cool runnings and the food is always immaculate. Thank god door dash gave me my money back.
google avatar

Jacklyn M.

Yelp
I ordered the jerk chicken for lunch. The chicken was juicy and tender. The gravy (omgee) was to die for. The plate included rice/beans, sweet plantains - perfectly cooked, and a side of cabbage slaw. I will definitely be returning when in the area.
google avatar

Summer D.

Yelp
Not good. If you are looking for oxtails they seem to have good reviews. Never have chicken patties in 3 weeks i have requested. Orded small chicken curry. No spice. Barely any flavor. Asking for steam rice which is on menu. Not available again. Only cabbage n rice n peas. I don't like either. I had rum punch n d pending who is making it might be decent. Drink only

Yelp
My fam was visiting from out of town and expressed how she loves Caribbean food. I sent her this suggestion from My Southern Brand IG and 1 other. She chose this one for their happy hour and I'm glad she did. This was my first visit as well. We were greeted by the lovely hostess and we opted to sit at the bar. She ordered the Rum Punch and I got the Mango Walk from the Happy Hour menu. We couldn't make up our minds on what to order as there were so many good looking options. So we started with a few appetizers: Jerk Chicken Cheese Fries (HH), Boudin balls, and ordered Beef Patties. The fries are definitely a large size to share, as well as the boudin balls. All 3 were absolutely delicious!! I would get them again. Our server informed us that the entree orders can have 2 meats as a combo. So we split an oxtail plate with the curry chicken. It came with cabbage, rice & peas, and plantains. I ordered a raspberry mojito that was very delicious and refreshing. The Oxtails & Curry Chicken were amazing!! Everything that we had was amazing. I would highly recommend and definitely go back!
google avatar

Joshua C.

Yelp
Amazing and affordable Caribbean food... when I say the jerk chicken is amazing I mean it. Authentic and amazing food. Definitely one of my favorite spots, seems I am here every week
google avatar

Nia S.

Yelp
Ordered the oxtail plate to go. Very disappointed. It was dry and the oxtail was really tough. I wouldn't recommend.

Margaret W.

Yelp
I came on a Wednesday after 2 o clock the lights are on but the establishment's doors are locked. Someone is in the back sleeping or they left the restaurant! Yall gots to do better!

Aaliyah B.

Yelp
The manger Ms.Candy took my order she was very sweet and kind 100% good customer service, i got a oxtail plate with double rice and peas the cook name is Ms.Erica and she most definitely did her thing !!!! i love love love this place food is always fresh and hot and the vibes are always there !!!

Jordan S.

Yelp
Best jerk chicken I recommend that curry goat great curry chicken not so good drinks bomb asf especially when the right cook & waiter is their
google avatar

Nabeel A.

Yelp
This Jamaican spot opens late and is a great place to eat and try their cuisine. I order a large curry chicken which came with two pieces of plantains, rice, and cabbage. On the phone the guy I called from here said it also comes with rice and beans and it didn't come with any unfortunately. I ordered carry out and didn't check until I reached home. Overall the dish itself is great. I would say the portion for a large entree is smaller than the large entrees I've had at other Caribbean restaurants.
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
I loved the Ital vegetarian (rice, peas, cabbage, vegetables) plate and jerk fries. The service is very good and the bar is not huge but it has some of my favorites. $7 for a Red Stripe may be a bit much if you are slamming beers, but not so bad to go with dinner or while you are waiting for takeout.

Son F.

Yelp
Let's start with the happy hour, it's Tuesday to Saturday 12-3 and 5-8. We started off with the rum punch and the Jamaican me crazy and they were strong and tasty. We then had the oxtails and curry goat and it was so good. The service was quick, friendly, and on point. We will definitely be back. Candy was great and Miss Erica put her foot in that meal.

Robert S.

Yelp
Ordered a large jerk chicken with extra jerk sauce & got light sauce, hardly any chicken, a bunch of rice & no cabbage. I appreciate Miss Kaitlyn for being sorrow with my situation but I wish I was aware that they ran out of cabbage because extra rice isn't the substitute I was looking for. This is the first time this happened after numerous visits. Very disappointed with this order
google avatar

Chloé G.

Yelp
They have good food, service, drinks, and music. I will be returning. Get the chicken or oxtails.
google avatar

Merdz E.

Yelp
This place use to be called something else. Now that they have new owners they changed the name, and quite frankly they should take the caribbean food off their menu because they don't know how to cook it. Went here after a while of not going and realized the name had changed. When I walked in I asked if they had new owners and I was told yes. Nevertheless I ordered brown stew chicken like I always do. AWFUL!!! Who ever is back there cooking cannot cook caribbean food. The rice and peas was also undercooked. The cabbage was raw and red onions was added. WHAT?! Lol and they wonder why cool runnings remains undefeated. Will not be going back.

The Dae S.

Yelp
This was my second time at this location & THIS time ? It was a great experience, i haas the curry chicken plate. It was good ! the lady at the bar Asia had great service ! She did her thing . We will definitely be back

Xavaier O.

Yelp
Candy, the young lady at the bar, provided excellent customer service with utmost respect for customers. The food is always cooked to perfection, making it a great place to hang out overall.

Shovan R.

Yelp
Great food! Great drinks! Get the wings top 5 on the menu. Definitely coming back for some food

Yelp
Ever since Island Sizzler closed down, I was thrilled to see the place is reopened under Bourbon Sizzler. I have been craving for jerk chicken for ages so I decided to get one to go. Price wise, it is very pricey almost $15 Food wise, it is not the same. It is very bland barely a taste of any kick. Not even an ounce of spiciness either. There are only four tiny pieces. The rice with bean is stiff as if the rice is somewhat dried up. The fried plantain is also stiff like refried food. The establishment clearly wants to evoke the good old memories of great food from Island Sizzler. But either they lost their original chef or they totally forgot how to make delicious spicy jerk chicken. Not recommended until they can recapture the original magic from Island Sizzler.

Kerri M.

Yelp
Y'all I never take the time to leave a review BUT omg I will never eat here again. I will post pictures below viewer discretion is advised. I went last night and I ordered 20 min before I arrived. I went in and paid and after another 10 minutes I asked for an update and the girl informed me there was no cabbage although I had already paid and had been waiting almost 45 min. The man comes out the back after me and the host were going back and forth and basically said oh well. The manager who was sitting there made it worse but i don't feel like typing all of that. Y'all I honestly should have waited 3-5 days for my refund but I was starving after working ten hours and really didn't want to waist money. Hours later after eating I threw EVERYTHING up. Y'all it was disgusting and half cooked. Here are the pictures below.
google avatar

Nyjah J.

Yelp
The food was spot on. I had the oxtails with rice, cabbage and sweet plantains. The food was fresh and seasoned well. I will be back.

Loveof L.

Yelp
Smh...i try to support my people but this was just not it! I can't believe the service here was this terrible. I paid $18.00 for 4 skimpy oxtails and 1 cup of rice and peas, a end piece of plaintain and a tablespoon of slaw. I'm so disappointed
google avatar

Nisha S.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I came here to eat while on vacation. We visited the Reggae Hut and it was a disaster. When we came here the girl who took the order was very nice and knowledgeable. I order tilapia and my girl ordered oxtails. Both plates were great and the rum cake was as well.
google avatar

William T.

Yelp
Came here for dinner and had a great meal! First, the restaurant wasn't super busy, so I managed to find a seat immediately. My server came over soon afterwards to give me a menu - I looked at it for about 10 seconds before deciding that I wanted to order the brown stew. I'll give a few thoughts on the meal below: 1) The stew tasted great! I really liked the plantains (fresh!) and the cabbage and peas on the side. The steamed rice was decent. 2) I should note that there were a bunch of little bones in the stew, so I was pretty careful as to avoid eating them :) So yeah, just make sure that you chew everything! 3) I had to ask for a water twice (it didn't come before my meal or with my meal, so I asked for it again and finally got it), so I ended up getting a little thirsty :) Basically, it seemed like staff were slightly disorganized and chatting among themselves. I'd be intrigued to see how the staff respond when the restaurant is busy. 4) On the other hand, everyone was super nice to me throughout my meal, so I'd give the service overall a thumbs up. I would definitely come back here. The food was good, the people seemed nice, and I really enjoyed myself!
google avatar

Debra A.

Yelp
This place used to be sooooo good but lately the food is different and I've tried multiple things off the menu, it just doesn't taste good anymore , plaintain very soggy
google avatar

Courtney M.

Yelp
Got the suggestion from a friend and really enjoyed it! I had the oxtail dinner that came with rice, cabbage, and plantain! There was a young last there doing just about everything except cooking. I assume because of COVID. Nonetheless, she handled herself well!

Daniel G.

Yelp
Very disappointed! The portion was insulting you get 4 pieces of chicken, and I mean they take a thigh and cut in 4 pieces. All for $14 bucks and they told me that I could get two more pieces for $16 bucks. What do you expect it's a bar not a restaurant. The cashier was very young and didn't know much about the menu either. I came here because my wife gave me her leftovers and I enjoyed the smoky flavor of the jerk chicken. I got leftovers on this plate . Not the same smoky flavors, very inconsistent. So you know I warned you! A picture is worth a thousand words.

Jose V.

Yelp
Excellent food, excellent service, I WILL be recommending this spot to everyone. This local business should be supported because it'll thrive!

Krisitn D.

Yelp
I have ordered several times from here. The customer service is great. Food is delicious and Packed with flavor. I usually go all the way to "Cool Runnings" but, now I don't have to! I'm not sure how "Golden Crust" down the road has better stars...yelp also says it's #11. ‍ That place is . Try this place!
google avatar

Kendra W.

Yelp
I truly don't get the negative reviews. The owner is great the place is super clean and the oxtails are so freaking good! I literally try something new everytime I go there and I'm pleasantly surprised every time. Stop by and you'll probably be back 5 stars foreal.

David A.

Yelp
Would eat the jerk chicken from Bourbon Sizzler about once a week in 2019 Pre-Covid, had no issues. However, today in 2023 the customer service is horrible and there are always "new cooks" that do not know the menu or have a clue in the world regarding what they're doing. Called in an order and after ordering all I got was a "okay". Had to ask for my total and how long it would take. Was told it would take 15-20 minutes. Which was perfect for me because I live 23 minutes away. Stopped at the gas station omw which added about 5 minutes. And when I got there had to wait another 13 minutes. To be told 20 minutes and having to wait over 40 is ridiculous. The cook was struggling to tie up the bag when I was leaving and I said don't worry I will eat the food in the car because that's how hungry I was. Upon receiving my "fish basket" there was only one piece of fish in it. Thank God I didn't let him tie up the bag and drive all the way home. I went back in about it and was told "sorry they thought it was a special" and then had to wait another 23 minutes to get one piece of fish. Check your food before you leave and don't go if your in a rush because there wait times are unreliable.
google avatar

Taylor D.

Yelp
Had the jerk wings. High expectations. But nope! Wings were soggy? Like we literally had to put them in the oven. Along with the fries which were also soggy because the wings were directly on top of them. I order Togo (live 3 minutes away) Jerk sauce on wings. Was different not really a sauce. It wasn't sticking to wings at all. Would I try again? Possibly. First experience wasn't a good one.

Yelp
Came here late on a Friday night for some drinks. It was reverse HH, so we went with mojitos. They took a surprisingly long time to make and were overly sweet. The glasses were enormous, but it seemed like mostly simple syrup with not much alcohol. The bartender was kind and friendly, but the drink just wasn't there. Ambiance is casual but clean.

Yelp
Service was bad, cashier was rude and taking personal calls while we were ordering. Food was not cooked thoroughly.
