The Best Restaurants and Cafes in Portland’s Old Town-Chinatown | Eater Portland

"Those hunting for a proper New York bagel will find what they’re looking for at this compact counter-service spot, helmed by NYC native-turned-Portland-transplant Michael Madigan. In classic NYC bagel shop fashion, sidle up to the case to choose from varieties like plain, everything, poppy seed, and sea salt, prepared with a schmear or as a breakfast sandwich. Served on bagels, rolls, or bread, there are plenty of familiar favorites in the breakfast sandwich category like BECs and the Sarah’s Special with house-made gravlax on caper schmear, as well as new creations like the Oliver Lent with egg, caramelized onions, and Gruyere cheese. Lunch sandwiches come with fillings like house-cured pastrami and salumi slices with Provolone." - Zoe Baillargeon

The Best Breakfast Sandwiches in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Bagel sandwiches at Bowery Bagels — the intimate, friendly little bagel shop and hot sauce store from a New York transplant — avoid the somewhat common problem of too-tough bagels and slippery ingredients, instead offering their fluffy, chewy bagels sandwiching egg and cheese with a variety of breakfast meat options, including ham, sausage, or bacon." - Ben Coleman

10 Real-Deal Bagel Shops in Portland | Eater Portland

"A project of Fairbanks Bread, Honey Bagels are available just once a week solely through online pre-order and picked up at a side door at Northeast’s Cafe Olli. These bagel interiors are on the airy side — albeit with ample chew — and baker Josh Fairbanks bakes his crusts into an especially dark crunch. Flavors may vary week to week but typically include classics like poppy, sesame, and cinnamon-raisin, along with a popular not-too-sweet chocolate option. Grab orders over the weekend fast, as Honey’s bagels almost always sell out quickly." - Daniel Barnett

16 Portland Breakfast Sandwiches to Try - Eater Portland

"Bagel purists will likely reject the premise of a bagel sandwich outright, and while they certainly have the right to, anyone else can enjoy them. The ones at Bowery Bagels — the intimate, friendly little bagel shop and hot sauce store from a New York transplant — avoid the somewhat common problem of too-tough bagels and slippery ingredients, instead offering their fluffy, chewy bagels sandwiching egg and cheese with a variety of breakfast meat options, including the not-so-kosher ham, sausage, or bacon. They’re each named for a Portland historical figure, and are available for takeout and delivery, with order forms online." - Alex Frane

Bowery Bagels – A Great Spot for a Quick Bite After an early morning flight from Northern California, I was in need of a solid but simple bite to hold me over until lunch with family. A bagel seemed like the perfect choice, so I stopped into Bowery Bagels in Portland on a quiet Sunday morning. Right away, the place had a welcoming local feel, and the staff was friendly. It wasn’t too busy—just a few people ahead of me—and I got my order quickly. I kept it simple with a classic bagel and cream cheese, and it did not disappoint. Fresh, well-made, and exactly what I needed after traveling. I enjoyed this little spot and their bagels, and I’d definitely stop by again next time I’m in town. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Bowery Bagels is a great choice for a quick and satisfying bite.

Google
Best lox I've ever had! The Sarah Special was a fresh, flavor explosion. Will be returning as soon as possible.

Google

Google
Had a great experience at Bowery Bagels. Got a delicious and flavorful bagel sandwich and a coffee. It is a no frills kind of place. The sort of place to frequent before work when you can’t be bothered to cook breakfast or you are behind for a minute. Bagels are dense and hearty and there are many different choices for sandwiches or smears. I will frequent here on busy mornings.

Google
Awe man! Sweet city kids digging their college job. Nice grown ups kicking it safe in the Pearl. No furniture. Tasty, fast and they didn't jam me up about bringing in my own coffee. I'm too crazy to always be nice to strangers, but this place is staffed with sweethearts. Brave the neighborhood. It is worth it.

Google
I was a bit skeptical walking in here, but the bagels exceeded my expectations. I got a breakfast type sandwich with the jalapeño salt bagel... hot, toasty, cheesy, slightly spicy and salty. It was everything you could want in a bagel. The self serve coffee is also good. More of a grab-and-go place.

Crystal Edwards

Google
Love the coffe; it's excellent!!! The bagles and the vegan options are wonderful! Shout out to Andy and to Juno. Andy for the making the coffee, and to Juno for the bagle suggestion. I will come back when I come to Portland.

Yelp
Good bagels, but I do have to rave about the amazing barista. She suggested adding lavender to my vanilla latte and it was the best latte I have ever had!!! Seriously the perfect latte and she has such a fun personality.

Yelp
Came to Bowery Bagels on a Saturday morning and it wasn't great. Let me start off by saying, the staff themselves, are great. Amazing energy! I came here and got the dan burnside breakfast sandwich and I was disappointed. It seems that a lot of the ingredients are premade and didn't have that crunchy taste fresh bagels have. Additionally, they don't seem to have any type of sauces - which was a bummer! As for the place, it is kind of small and there are minimal seats to be able to eat there. Definitely look for somewhere to be able to enjoy your bagel if you come. Overall - I would not recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute little neighborhood bagel shop making bagels fresh daily. They have something to please any pallet, including vegan options. Extremely nice people working there too. Many options for food and drinks to choose from so you won't soon get bored. There are only about 4 bar seats at the windows so prepare either for that or to take it with you, but do go! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Bowery was a bummer! First: I love that all of their bagels are vegan, even the ones you wouldn't expect to be (I'm looking at you, Parmesan!). Second: they have a great collection of vegan spreads. Here's the first problem: at 7am when I went, I asked the employee if they'd be better toasted or just as they are. She said toasted -- which, not to be a bagel snob, is a red flag because 7am is *when they open* and you'd expect them to be warm and ready. The bagel itself, toasted, was decent. I just don't think it should have to be. I got coffee with it and it was very bad. Second problem: their vegan cream cheese was actually awful. Not sure what all of the positive reviews here were talking about. It's a cashew-based cream cheese that errs on the side of grainy. One cashew protip: soak them first!!! Another one: use a Vitamix! This did NOT meet the mark. Unfortunately there was no seating and there is also no public seating nearby because Portland hates homeless people so please do not expect to have somewhere to sit and enjoy your bagel.

Lydia P.

Yelp
The service here is wonderful, however, the food is not as great. I came in yesterday morning after reading all the wonderful reviews, and I'm pretty disappointed in the experience we had. The bagels were stale, assuming they made them, I would expect when coming in the morning the food would still be fresh. We had two plain bagels and an everything bagel. Outside of being stale, the everything bagel had weird seasonings on it, and a lot of the weird seasonings. I get the idea of trying to be different, but at least make an attempt on having good edible food. The cream cheese was ok, wasn't grainy but it was pretty bitter. They also had zero seating, I would hope that when you have an indoor shop that there would be somewhere to sit while waiting/eating. We ended up eating at a nearby food trucks seating area.
google avatar

Arjan T.

Yelp
Lovely service, but bummed they had run out of plain cream cheese halfway through the morning. Jalapeño schmear was offered as an alternative but it doesn't quite hit in the same way.
google avatar

Suhani P.

Yelp
I really, really enjoyed my bagel and it was honestly probably one of the best I've ever had! I ordered a jalapeño salt bagel with the roasted jalapeño cream cheese. The bagel was fresh, toasty, and just plain delicious! I loved the cream cheese and the chunks of tangy jalapeños. Knocking one star only because I was disappointed that they didn't have many choices left when I came in. It was well over an hour before closing but it seemed that they were done making new bagels for the morning. Although I enjoyed the bagel I picked, I wish I had other options. Definitely would return to try the other flavors!
google avatar

Juliette L.

Yelp
Bagels are always a go to for a quick breakfast for me and walking around town this was the perfect location for a quick bite. I ordered Sarah's special which consisted of red onion, lox, capers, and cream cheese. After about 10 minutes the bagel came out and while it was tasty I did feel like there could've been more lox, it felt as if the ratios were off with a lot of cream cheese and onion and little to no lox or capers. The bagel itself was good as well but nothing to jump up and down about.
google avatar

Amber O.

Yelp
The staff was very friendly and kind. Unfortunately, the bagels were not awesome. So small! Because they are so small, they are all crust, which translates to a hard chew, without that soft chewy center NY Bagels are famous for. The hummus and vegan spread are so watery that they both just make a huge mess. The flavor of the hummus was good. The flavor of the vegan spread was ok, but the texture was so grainy and clumpy. My jaw actually hurt when I was done eating.

Yesenia M.

Yelp
Delicious bagels! The smell of bacon was mesmerizing! Definitely recommend for a morning treat!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Very good bagels with several vegan topping options and great coffee. Wish they had places to sit though.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I had wanted to try this place for a while. The staff were super friendly, and I appreciated the range of local coffee options they had. The bagel sandwich had really solid flavors. The egg was cooked perfectly, and it all came together quite well. The bagel itself however didn't feel very bagely to me. It was clearly fresh and had some chew but not in a way that made me think of a classic bagel. I do appreciate that my bagel was Everything'd on all sides, a sign of quality topping strategies in my mind.
google avatar

Mario M.

Yelp
Good, old school bagels. Service is fast and friendly. Cool, laid back vibe. There is nowhere to sit, but there are counters to stand at.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
For a PNW bagel this was not bad. I got the Sarah's Special - there could have been more lox but this was still delicious.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
Ordered online, waited the 20+ minutes it said it would take, after the order was CONFIRMED. Showed up, they had no idea who I was and said that happen a lot when ordering on their website!!! How is this a common occurence! From there they agreed to make my order. I absolutely hate cheese and was very clear NO CHEESE. To no surprise, they put cheese on it. Fun to throw away $26 worth of bagel sandwiches.
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
My daughter and I stopped by Bowery Bagels several times while on vacation. You just can't get bagels this good in our hometown area. My favorite was the pumpernickel bagel with salmon cream cheese. The bagels were slightly hard on the outside with a soft center. It was not too chewy and the flavors popped. The level of service provided was excellent and the restaurant was very clean. They followed strict Covid restrictions during each visit.
google avatar

Ricky W.

Yelp
I moved to Portland a month ago and Bowery is the best bagel and smear I've had so far! Jalapeño salt bagel with fresh herb smear, DELICIOUS. Georgia assisted me and was very helpful and personable. I will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Suejung J.

Yelp
Did you know there's a celebrity cat with his own Instagram named Oscar?? His owner lives in the nearby lofts. Everyone at Bowery is familiar with him and he's the sweetest loving adorable cat wearing a gps tracker. XD This alone is reason enough for me to make Bowery my go to caffeine source in the area. So is the staff, everyone is kind and attentive. My bf got a mocha with half the sweetener, and I got a sugar free London fog. They're quick at fulfilling customer orders and this is my new favorite London fog in Portland. It wasn't overstepped, and it wasn't too sweet or not sweet enough with the sugar free vanilla, it was just right. :) Come for the goods, stay for the cat who may or may not send you on a quest.
google avatar

Gabby W.

Yelp
I usually love this place. They have the best bagels in Portland and I can almost always count on a good cup of coffee to start my morning. But this morning I got to the bottom of my cup of coffee and there was a metal screw! I don't know if it was from the espresso machine or what, but good thing I didn't drink it! I would normally rate them a 4 or 5, but this was pretty alarming and concerning. Staff- if this screw is important I can bring it back to you!

Brian C.

Yelp
This place is great for authentic New York-style bagels. Friendly people, too. My only complaint has to do with the neighborhood, because downtown is still a hellhole. Oh, and they need better signage, because I pedaled past here a number of times before ever realizing it was there.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Great food, great service! I visit Portland for work and having a reliable vegan option from a spit that opens early is everything.
google avatar

Darren Y.

Yelp
Awesome place for some awesome bagels. Located on broadway there's lots of street parking albeit in a kinda sketchy neighborhood. Everything is good here - bagels of any variety, all of their shmears (veggie is one of my favorites). Their breakfast sandwiches are also great thought a bit prices at around 7 bucks. They are interestingly named after Portland streets and they have a pamphlet that gives you the story behind the names of there's streets if you're interested in expanding your mind while filling your belly. The main thing I come for these days is the afternoon special. Come after one and you get a dozen bagels half off. That is a sweeeeet deal.

Piper B.

Yelp
The bagels and breakfast sandwiches here are absolutely to die for! The employees are very friendly and helpful, and they have so many options to choose; including plant based.
google avatar

Rosie D.

Yelp
First of all I love their sea salt bagels. But Perhaps more importantly employees are are incredibly kind. I placed an order online and was running late. Couldn't find anywhere to park and in the rain ran up with my baby in my arms. Doors closed. I missed them. And while I don't recommend ever testing this out I do greatly appreciate how considerate they were by still providing me the bagels I ordered and being kind about it. Anyone who has kids knows how easy it is to run late and it just feels awful to make anybody wait on you. That said, arrive early because parking on broadway is a bit of a mess. Ohh! And don't forget to tip!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Was heading up to Seattle on the Bolt Bus and saw Bowery Bagels from the bus stop. Having been born and lived near the Bowery, in New York, I was curious. The décor is that of the old Noah's Bagels, tiled to look like a NY subway station. The staff were attentive, getting my order just right (and that's not a given). The bagels are good, and the toppings too. It's not up to par with NY's best -- Russ & Daughters on Houston St -- but it was very satisfying in Portland, very early on a Saturday morning.
google avatar

Sofia L.

Yelp
I got a flavored bagel that was stale, hard and it was extremely thin it didn't even taste like a bagel. I did get the salmon spread which was actually really good. And I got a mocha which was meh. I don't think this is a place to rave about.

Sofia Anderson A.

Yelp
so I have only been to the location they have on the PSU campus inside of the Smith building, but I love this place. so nice to have a quick and easy place to swing by and get a hot breakfast, especially as a vegan. The vegan schmear can really get everywhere though, so get napkins! love the jonny applegate on an everything or garlic&herb bagel, just be aware this is a very buttery and salty sandwich!
google avatar

Rna W.

Yelp
BAGEL CHIPSSSSS. OMG. You know how the best part of chex mix is the bagel chips? Of course you do. They have homemade bagel chips for $2/bag and they are a thing of dreams. I also picked up a sesame bagel with lox. Fixed my craving. Not my favorite but the flavors were good.
google avatar

Christina R.

Yelp
My bf is from NY and is super critical of bagels. He doesn't like any in Las Vegas so he wanted to come here to give them a try. Turns out... He liked them! Great variety but get here early because once they sell out of a flavor they sell out. I really wanted an everything bagel but had to settle for pumpernickel. Still very delicious. I love lots of cream cheese on my bagels and they didn't disappoint.
google avatar

Julie Q.

Yelp
Excellent bagels, sandwiches, and amazing StumpTown coffees. The service at this place is wonderful, everyone is friendly and in great moods, working together like and actual team. If you're a pepper lover, try their everything bagel. So good! They're my all time favorite! I Love ever bagels, but these beat out all the competition in town!! These bagels are served at New Season's, Nossa Familia and other great spots around Portland, but I've been wanting to go straight to the source and I'm so happy I did. It was a constant stream of busy from the time we arrived until we left, and service was fast for everyone. *I will give a tip - grab your bagel or sandwich and drink to go and walk up to the park - seating is minimal inside and very uncomfortable with high metal stools with a bump all the way around on the rim. Save your tush and grab your meal to go.
google avatar

Joanne S.

Yelp
Small bagel shop with sandwiches and coffee. Very little seating for 4 ppl. Most ppl get coffee and bagels to go. They offer different types of smears and other toppings. I got a reuben sandwich which hit the spot. Coffee is stumptown and I got a vanilla latte. Cute little shop.
google avatar

Danny B.

Yelp
Saturday always is bagel day for us. Finally stopped by on my way home from the PSU Farmers Market to give Bowery a try instead of our usual bagel supplier. Ok, so I've found a new bagel shop. Love the wonderfully fresh and chewy texture. Perfect. Tasty smears too. This just might be our new regular supplier of Everything and Sesame bagels. Helps that there's plenty of street parking. Makes for a quick stop on the way back to our home in North Portland.
google avatar

Anna O.

Yelp
I've only been to the PSU location. They have a good selection of bagels and toppings. I've tried at least four flavors, so far the everything bagel is my favorite. The staff is always friendly, kind, quick, and accurate, this is a good place to grab a quick breakfast. (I still haven't found a bagel I enjoy as much as I did Goldberg's onion bagel- I miss so much about that place).
google avatar

Billie L.

Yelp
Never felt more unwelcome to someone's establishment. Maybe they were having a bad day, i don't know. Bagels were ok at best certainly not better than the much much cheaper, better quality bagels fron Safeways bakery department. Not kidding! Also, area is unsafe for good looking people like myself to walk the street. Tip......park out front ... run inside and order....then run back out to your car or uber directly, don't stop or hesitate. Still not kidding. I seriously doubt i will return. Too bad I wanted to love this place, as I am an ex babe from Brooklyn. Caio.
google avatar

Joseph F.

Yelp
Convenient location, yummy bagels and sandwiches, hit or miss customer service. The sandwiches are named after famous Portland contributors and their store interior is modeled after a New York City subway station. Their bagels and sandwiches are yummy. Simon benson on salt and pepper bagel is my favorite Saturday morning combo. Customer service can be hit or miss sometimes. Don't bother writing their email with any questions or concerns, seems to be monitored by a moody teenager.
google avatar

Kathryn H.

Yelp
Decent little bagel joint. Stopped by to grab a bagel and some coffee on my last Portland trip. I enjoyed the bagel it was very authentic and I loved the cream cheese. The people watching is what blew my mind. The store faces a XXX theater and the characters that entered and exited were very interesting. I was riveted.

Kim C.

Yelp
These are way to flat with no chewiness to be called New York bagels. I drove an hour to try these, in no way do they compare to the New York bagel. I bought a dozen yesterday morning from the Broadway location. The bagel was flat, was not crisp on the outside, not chewy on the inside. Just a regular Portland bagel. Yes, I can grade them with experience, I am a New Yorker, transplant.
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
The bagels are amazing! The chipotle one as a sandwich is a show stopper!! So many great vegan options!! Only compliant is that I don't have two mouths!
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
The customer service was excellent. The bagels are too. I called on advance to make sure they had lox, they did. When I arrived the only had one plain bagel left and I wanted two plain bagel sandwiches with lox. I selected a sea salt bagel for the second one. The person preparing the sandwiches helpfully scraped some of the sea salt off. The sandwiches held up well for 90 minutes for a trip to the Amtrak station in a Lyft and a wait in the lounge with no AC. I boarded the train and settled into my room. The AC was on, I was comfortable and starving. I devoured both bagels. These were perfect. The proportion of lox to cream cheese was just right. They were wrapped carefully to limit mess. The seat salt bagel was so delicious I regretted that any sea salt had been removed. I sure appreciate the extra care and effort put into these sandwiches. I'll be back. Note the operating hours and make the extra effort. It's worth it.
google avatar

Ethan B.

Yelp
Visiting Bowery Bagels is in many ways like being transported to New York. The bagels are authentic (if a bit small), as are the schmears. Unfortunately, also authentic is the service. While I've had my order taken by an extremely kind gentleman who seemed happy to share a product he clearly had faith in, I've also been put off by a glaring young woman grunting in response to my ordering a dozen bagels, and a young man rolling his eyes at me when I order an item off the menu that was currently out of stock, as though I should have known. If you have skin thick enough, Bowery Bagels is a nice little deli with a charming aesthetic and even cuter menu, but be aware of how hit-and-miss the service can be.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
First time trying to seek out nyc bagels in Portland which is hard especially during quarantine. But this place is pretty good. They even called me after I placed my online order to clarify about my sandwich which was really nice. Gravlox, onions, and caper schmear on an everything bagel. And added an egg.

Brad S.

Yelp
Just very, very good bagels at a regular sort of bagel place. Recommend the chipotle salt (if you're ok with a little spice)... they got next-level flavor out of that thing.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
Me and my girlfriend were staying downtown and were within walking distance from this bagel shop. I got the Dan Burnside (bacon, egg, & cheese) on an everything bagel it was very tasty and warm even when we got back to the hotel. Recommend to bagel lovers.
google avatar

Adrian S.

Yelp
Ordered online through postmates never got my coffee but was charged for it. I tried calling the shop during buisness hours for a replac but got no response, bagel was stale and chewy .. don't recommend
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
Bowery Bagels gets a hole in one for their awesome bagels! I'm figuring out how to convince work to get this place to cater our next breakfast! I stopped in on a moving day to power us through. I got a gravalox on the salt and pepper bagel and a Dan Burnside (Egg, cheddar, & bacon) on an MSG (miso, sesame, ginger) bagel. These were seriously awesome sauce and I don't even use that phrase. The MSG bagel had this unique umami taste that was perfect with the bacon and the large flecks of salt went so well with the generous slices of gravalax. I was sad after we finished not because we had a day of packing ahead of us, but that I wanted 10 more. Is that bad to admit?
google avatar

Lindsay N.

Yelp
Their version of pumpernickel is basically a crappy wheat bagel. Props for serving their own homemade vegan cream cheese but it doesn't taste anything like cream cheese. It's more like a wet nut butter spread--like bitchin sauce or hummus. I tried the plain and the smoked mushroom one and wasn't a fan of either and the bagels were chewy and not very good. I threw it away after two bites

Bill A.

Yelp
Excellent bagels and nice employees. I was asked to pick up a few dozen bagels for a gathering and I needed some advice from the folks behind the counter at Bowery. The employees I encountered were fun, informative and really helpful. The gathering was attended by all East Coast attendees. They all really enjoyed the bagels, but of course, all talked about the best bagel shop in the world in their home town. . To me my home town's Bowery makes the best bagels in the world!
google avatar

Jennie W.

Yelp
If I could make it a half star I would. Let's just say that they get this star for being open early and promt service. My wife and I were walking back from an early morning errand and spotted this quaint bagel shop. We were excited. We grew up with NY style bagels and were so happy to find a bagel shop walking distance from us. We walked in and the ladies behind the counter quickly finished their conversation and waited on us. (note I did not say they greated us and we were the only cutomers there. )I place the order of 4 bagels and I noticed she did nto grab them from the bins in front of me. I paid and said thank you and left. I left feeling I had interrupted something. 1/2 star for service. The bagels: I am certain we were given day old bagles. There is no way they were fresh. Not just hard but dry. When we got home we gave them to our dog. This was about ayear ago. I've heard a lot about this place since and have thought about going back but I just don't want to give them my money. I really feel that beacause we were judged by our apearance and given day old bagels. I hope the staff has improved since then.

Yelp
Love, looove the chew on these feller bagels...noshing on one now firmer, tighter bagel jogs my memory to review the bagels that are done right! Gorgeous lovely chewiness not easily found. The right texture and mouth feel is so important for quality bagels. Some are just plain fluffy and wrong (i.e. How i find Einsteins) Have had the multigrain, poppy, and Today, this fab, satisfying cornmeal-crusted one.
