Louisiana-Based Banh Mi Boys Will Open a Location in Portland, Oregon - Eater Portland

"This summer, a highly anticipated Spanish restaurant from an alumnus of San Francisco’s now-closed, Michelin-starred restaurant Commonwealth opened in the former Beech Street Parlor space, with a menu of Basque standbys like tortilla Española and salt cod croquetas. Last week, Willamette Week critic Andrea Damewood gave Brasa Haya a rave, complimenting 'a perfectly stacked bite of pork belly and squid,' a 'silky and light' tortilla Española, and 'a gorgeous plate of grilled octopus, oh so tender and wrapped like a tendril around a potato mousse so light it’s almost a foam, with grilled escarole, brown butter and crispy bits of fried caper.'" - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Mehhh. We had high hopes as we love Spanish food and wines. But the whole point of Tapas style eating is with wine/beer/cider but this place is too expensive to be a quick-bite tapas bar. Trying to be too fancy. And the “house” type restaurant common in Portland doesn’t work for tapas. “Homey” is not what i associate with tapas bar crawls in Spain. Meatballs were weirdly spiced. The steak was chewy and tough like rubber. Spanish omelette “tortilla” was barely set, and still uncooked in the center. Cocktails were also weak. I dunno, I can think of many better ways to waste your money on overpriced food in PDX. I wouldn’t go back or recommend

Very cute spot for dinner! Staff seemed like maybe still working out some kinks or getting settled into the swing of things, in a small space, customers can overhear when staff are frustrated about the system or other staff members. Kind of ruins the ambiance a bit. But other than that, the food was really fantastic and unique dishes I haven't come across in Portland Spanish restaurants. I tried the tripe dish as recommended by the bartender, definitely not a dish I would have gravitated to myself but it was delicious, crispy with a intense sauce that is hard to describe. It was a bit of a heavy and rich dish so definitely to share with the whole table (it's tapas, so meant to be shared. The foie gras was sensational. That dish I wouldn't want to share with anyone and could have eaten two orders to myself. Don't miss it! The octopus was also perfect, beautifully tender, and quite a large portion. Paired perfectly with the potato mousse.

My husband, friends and I were so excited when they opened this. We loved their restaurant in SF. It’s even better now. The pork cheeks were especially delicious.

Wonderful dinner experience with food and staff that punch above their weight! Great wine selections, food was incredible, and staff were a delight. We got lucky to sit at a low table near the kitchen and would recommend the seat if you can get it!

So glad to have this delicious new tapas spot in Portland. Everything about it, the perfectly assembled menu and cozy and elegant setting, is making it my favorite place to dine.

We ate there during their first week open, and tried six dishes from the menu. Everything we ate was delicious, but the salt cod croquettes were our favorite. We had excellent service, great recommendations for wine and cocktails, and greatly enjoyed our experience. We were seated outside on the patio and loved it as well - don't expect a large, spacious restaurant - it's small tables with close confines, but a lovely space none the less. Will be back!

Brasa Haya was a uniquely creative and wonderful experience. Some of the best cocktails I have had in Portland, and a thoughtfully crafted menu. The location is fantastic, the house is adorable, and the service staff is top notch! Our server Sarah was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. The manager Kassandra came by and was also delightful! The prices were very reasonable, and I will definitely be back!

Portions are small so order an appetizer. Food was okay but not spectacular. I had the clams, but it was in such a small bowl I couldn't get to the potatoes and chorizo until I ate some of the clams. A larger bowl would have solve that problem. They could have used slightly more potatoes which were cut up into small pieces. I think they used about a third of a potato. Hardly a food cost problem. They brought my companion's food first and mine five minutes later. A definite food serving mistake. The atmosphere was nice and the staff seemed eager to please.
