Loved the food and vibe here! The Cheese Puff Gougeres were like a warm, light, flakey, cheese hug — highly recommend as a starter. The Cognac Waygu burger was incredible, with caramelized onions and a juicy, savory patty. I loved the crispy fries that came with it. The Spicy Vodka Rigatoni had a light flavor, could’ve been dialed up a few notches. The service was attentive and friendly. Overall, romantic French atmosphere, quality food and top notch service!

Very nice French restaurant, the food and the service were amazing. I had Tuna Poke and my company had Steak Tartare with homemade French fries. I definitely want to come back.

A nice local upper east side restaurant where I’ve dined for several years when uptown. Very reliable food, nice staff; has the feel of a neighborhood place. Yesterday, salad & halibut over risotto.

Enjoyed our night at Brasserie Cognac this evening. The food was good. I had the duck. It was good but not great. We also had the Salmon and that was out of this world. The cheese puffs were really good as well. The onion soups were good and just the right size. So often the soups are too large but this was the right size. I’ll be back.

Had lunch at Brasserie Cognac, and the experience was very nice. This is a good Upper East Side restaurant that was absolutely packed when we visited for a weekday lunch. The food was solid, and the service was outstanding during our visit. This is a very nice neighborhood restaurant / French Bistro.

I was waiting for the perfect French bistro uptown and this is an amazing spot the attention the decoration and the dishes all together are insane Highly recommended

Pretty bistro with standard French fare. Place is pricey, which I’m fine with, so long as the food is good. Started with a salad, it was very tasty, decent portion with a house made vinaigrette. Went on to the French onion soup. Everyone knows one of the best parts is eating the slightly crisped cheese on the outside. This cheese was melted but the chef did not really brown it all. Once I got to the soup part it was off tasting. Hard to describe, maybe it was just freshly made or even perhaps just watered down. It was very sweet, like someone added sugar to compensate for not caramelizing the onions. For $18 I sent it back. My next course was the fondue. Also a huge disappointment. Terrible flavor and consistency. No cheese pull at all. Points for adding wine but maybe too much wine? They paired it with stale bread. Not sure what other posters were talking about with the veggies that come with it, but I didn’t get any. I ended up using the bread from the basket they provided at the beginning of the meal. I also didn’t eat much of it because I didn’t want to send back yet another awful dish. My daughter got the beef Bourgogne. That was very good. The meat was fork tender and not dried out at all. The sauce was rich and the plate well balanced with veggies and well made mashed potatoes. The service was good. I’ve eaten here before. Had the French onion soup last time and it was tasty so I’m thinking perhaps the chef was having an off day.

The ambiance and environment here is beautiful and the service is friendly! I wouldn't say the food is anything to write home about. There is a good variety and likely something for everyone, but nothing that is a MUST try. The crowd inside tends to skew older but it's a social crowd. I'll be back for the ambiance, but if I had to rate the food, I'd rate it a 3 out of 5!

Wife and I were looking for a quaint French bistro (specifically not fine dining) and this place was perfect. Reminded us of Paris. Waiter was French as well! We each had wine with our meals which was perfectly paired. We had the rigatoni with vodka sauce and roasted chicken. Both were really really good.

Great service! The food was delicious but espresso drinks were ok. Lovely setting and very much a brasserie vibe.

While I have no argument with the other review, I will comment that the managment has a strange idea about service. A glass of wine was INSIPID at best. The waiter told me that the policy (not posted) is that I could send it back but would have to pay 50%. The manager's comment of "it's a waste for us" was bizarre. He then said "that's what every restaurant in New York does" is so far from true that it's not worth commenting on. The food is mediocre.

We loved the atmosphere and the service. The food was very good but my one critique is that my Tuna Tartar was slightly over-dressed with the soy sauce dressing. The tuna was fresh and the combination with the avocado was very tasty. The creme brulee was also very good as well as the cocktails and wine offering. Worth the visit.

The WORST service. Never coming back here again. Not even good anymore. No one apologizes for the poor service and it just keeps getting progressively worst. I've eaten here for years. I've slowly watched the quality and service diminish. I am DONE.

Made last minute reservations and we were lucky as it's a tiny place & it was packed. The couple we were with thought their food was absolutely delicious ~ the quiche as fresh as can be ~ our food was delicious too.

This has become one of our favorite restaurants on the upper east side! Every thing we have ordered has been consistently delicious! While Cognac is a French restaurant, they offer an unusual menu where you can order a phenomenal burger, chicken salad or one of the chef's delicious French specialties ! They are open for lunch and dinner with lots of indoor and outdoor seating options.

I've never sent back food before, and the waiter was so nice. I wanted steak frites for my birthday, and specified medium rare. I got back a very overcooked well done / dry cut of poor quality meat. The second one came back completely rare, but brownish red inside with fatty veins, like rubber. My bf got the duck and it was 4 wet pieces of gamey grey meat with no edible side. I was very apologetic but we had to leave. This was inedible. I will give the drinks, service and Gougeres cheese puffs a solid 4 stars.

Totally enjoyed this impromptu lunch at this restaurant. We started with the tuna tartare which was exceptionally delicious. The fish was fresh and layered on top of an avocado mixture. The ponzu sauce was perfect and provided the right acidity to the dish. The octopus salad was good but I didn't care for the white beans in the salad. The octopus was cooked perfectly. Our service was very good. I do think the pricing is a little high but you are paying for location as well which is just off Madison Ave. definitely a restaurant worth trying.

A very tasty omelette and quiche brunch included a delightful Bordeaux wine and great weather for outdoor seating. Service was good and the pommes frites with Dijon were yummy . Will try for dinner next time.

Cognac is a cozy French Brasserie located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. We visited this spot several times over the course of our week long trip to visit extended family in the area. Like most restaurant in this part of the Upper East Side, it caters to a more local crowd. Dining here is straight forward: no flash, just good food and good service in a dimly lit, classic white tablecloth French Brasserie setting. The restaurant plays some classic French tunes in the background, but the music is never loud enough to overpower your conversation with whoever you're dining with. Everything here is solid: from the warm, complementary toasted bread with butter, to the Tomato Soup (my aunt's favorite), the Cognac Wagyu Burger, and even their Tuna Poke (their version of a poke bowl which was a very nice surprise! I believe it's only available for lunch). The Cognac Wagyu Burger ($21) is a tender Wagyu beef patty topped with caramelized onions, French Emmental cheese, and avocado, making each bite absolutely flavor packed. Served with crunchy, hand cut fries, this is a brasserie classic you can't go wrong with ordering! The Tuna Poke ($25) was a large poke bowl containing Japanese sushi grade A tuna, white rice, avocado, wantons, mango, scallions & pozu yuzu vinaigrette. Everything in this bowl was so fresh! The pozu yuzu vinaigrette gave the poke bowl an extra kick of flavor without being a heavy sauce that completely overpowers the tuna and other ingredients. For dessert, the Creme Brûlée ($14) and assortment of French Macarons ($17) are all delicious. Any of these desserts, along with an order of espresso, are all must haves to cap off the tranquil French inspired dining experience you were looking for in the hustle and bustle of the big city.

I came here for an event earlier in the upstairs area and it was so cutely decorated. There was a 3 course menu. I ordered the goat cheese and tomato tart to start, salmon as the main, and chocolate ice cream puffs as the dessert. The appetizer was a much larger portion than I was expecting. The tart wasn't bad but I recall thinking it could use a balsamic glaze. I felt the salmon was a bit unseasoned and overcooked which was disappointing. The ice cream puffs were yummy though. The servers were nice and patient with us as we were a pretty big crowd.

Can't say enough about the food, the service and the ambiance of Brasserie Congac. Late lunch/early dinner with 3 friends. Service impeccable, food delicious and we were given the grace to sit and chat as long as we pleased. I will be back again for sure!

First time experience, excellent service, very good food and fairly priced for nyc .Wilson our waiter was very cordial and did excellent follow up .Never felt rushed . Will be my new go to spot when I am in the area .

This spot was busy on a Sunday afternoon. We chose it because it was on our way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was a little concerned because they have a "B" from the health department, but ate here anyway. The restaurant is charming and the staff, despite being very busy, were pretty good. The mussels meuniere: all the mussels were open, and the broth had great flavor.  The poached halibut came with some pickled ginger on top with red wine sauce. It was an odd combination but worked really well. I liked it a lot.

Lovely afternoon meal. Had the mussels and the tuna tartare. Both delicious. Also the floating island for dessert was wonderful. Excellent service and delightful outdoor seating.

My fiancé and I stumbled here after a day at the Met. We were instantly transported to our favorite rom com, Midnight in Paris, as soon as we got seated. The music, the lighting, and the food was everything we hoped for and more. It could be the phenomenal food or the excellent staff, but kudos to the establishment and team because we had a great experience and have already recommended to friends. Naturally we ordered escargot to start, followed by the beef bourguignon and the scallops. Then we got the chocolate soufflé and the chocolate cake with an espresso to share after a long afternoon. Everything was delicious and our plates were empty. Overall fantastic experience and we will certainly be back. Photo enclosed of the chocolate cake. Apologies as I was too excited and ate everything before my basic b***h kicked in. Please enjoy.

We went to Cognac for brunch. Three of us , I had a hamburger , my friend had a salad , both of these were fine , no complaints . However my other friend had the quiche , it was so poorly presented on a white plate in the corner with a small handful of greens next to it , nothing in the greens , it looked ridiculous , a quarter of the plate was empty . The manager never came around. I could have done much better at home with a frozen quiche. Other than that the restaurant was fine. Please work on your presentations.

One of our favorite places on UES we've been coming here for years and always enjoy delicious French Classics like Beef Tartare, Escargot, Mussels and more. Solid service and lovely ambiance.

Cozy, French Brasserie in the Upper East Side. Pop by the bar and sip a glass of Joseph Perrier champagne. It's a neighborhood venue so don't expect a wild adventure. There aren't many places to visit in this neighborhood, but this is as chic as one can hope without a trip to the Marais! Didn't stay for dinner on this trip - perhaps next time!

What a neighborhood gem! I've had a business in walking distance from this exceptional cozy spot yet for reasons unknown I've seen it , always found it charming but never ventured in Perhaps it's because I like to escape my work environment after hours ... in any case I am thrilled to have discovered this perfect slice of old New York style Brasserie It's small, cozy, elegant but not stuffy. The tiny bar which is managed by a superior gent named Jesus, is fabulous to sit at if it's just 2 of you. The tales afford many "side sitting " opportunities for romantic chat. The lighting is seductive, the sound soft French music barely audible which all for good conversation Beautiful selections of wines by the glass ( mostly French of course) are widely varied and priced gently Warm toasted rolls arrive , crispy and hard to ignore. The tuna tartare is exceptionally prepared , extremely fresh with a slightly Asian finish in style. It says it's served with fries, however I think they mean the very fine crispy slivers on top of the tuna do if your expectation is French fries .. better order a side of them. The mussels muniere are very clean , and presented in a crock with a butter lemon broth which you will want to finish that bread to dunk in. It does however come with a side of hand cut very hot fries which makes you want to eat them before the mussels! I did fink that although the mussels were tender they were not as plump in size as I had hoped ... that said, it still did not disappoint I'll be back soon as the menu is limited by very inviting

This is not a cheap restaurant but the food is real good. We were seated outside for lunch and it wasn't hot with cover and fans on. The foods are great and the portion isn't extremely large which is a big plus.

Another great experience at Cognac East . Nice ambiance, excellent food and service . Ate inside , as we needed some AC, after being out in the park. There is outdoor seating as well. Bread on the table. Portions decent but not large. Desserts could have been a little larger but hey, thats French food, to be expected.

French bistro on the UES. We came for lunch on a Sunday. The hostess was very friendly. We didn't have a reservation but were seated right away upstairs. The spiral staircase is beautiful. The whole building is beautiful. I was imagining it before it was changed from a private home to a restaurant. Beautiful. The food is good here. We had the onion soup, nicoise salad (they use canned Italian tuna, not fresh seared tuna), crab cakes, salmon burger and chicken nugget kids meals. You have to be patient here. Some dishes came out while others came out 20 minutes later. The waitstaff is friendly. The kitchen staff has to get their act together.

Yellow fin tuna tartar was excellent. The tomato and goat cheese tart was completely soggy on the bottom. While the cheese souffle was cooked perfectly, I'd personally have them skip the cheap Emmenthaler and stick with superior Gruyere or aged Compte. The accompanying salad was wilted and soggy. They get three stars from me for the addition of the Tarte Tartin, which was superb.

While our dinner was good, we were appalled by the treatment we received from the manager. We had barely finished our tea after our meal and had only been in the restaurant for 1 hour and 10 minutes when the manager asked us to leave because he said there were customers waiting for tables. As we left, we did not see one person waiting for a table. This was the most blatant level of offensive customer service we have ever experienced. As neighborhood locals, we never expected to be treated this way. Be forewarned, the management is rude, unwelcoming and is only interested in rapidly turning over tables - not developing a loyal customer base.

The room is warm, as are the waiters and bartender. The food is consistently good, and the menu, which covers all bases, is tweaked often enough to keep it interesting. A cozy neighborhood boîte that makes you feel as if you're in a Parisian corner bistro. My only issue here is with the hyper, singing, and harmonica-playing "host". He is way too loud and intrusive. A cozy spot like this, with great ambience and perfect music on the sound system, is not the place for a court jester.

Cognac is a typical French Bistro in midtown NYC with Steak Frite, a variety of fish dishes, moule frites, etc. all well prepared. My wife reserved a table at Cognac three weeks prior to our visit and asked for a "quiet table." We were seated on the second floor facing Lexington Ave which was all well and good until a large party of very noisy and rowdy women (probably a sweet 16 party) in excess of 10 people were seated next to us. We complained to the manager who said we had been there "for an hour and 26 min" which should be enough. Rest of staff seemed apologetic. I think the manager needs etiquette lessons. I suppose if you're planning on a quick meal and the pretense of an nasty, authentic, french manager, the place is acceptable.

Service was great, food was great. Steak frites were cooked well. Outside area had heaters, kept us warm in December

Came here on a date night with my fiancé and the service was great! The waiter was very nice and attentive. The vibes were very romantic. We ordered the escargot which was very herbal to me. We also got the cheese puffs as an app which were average. Their wine selection is great and the waiter was very helpful when the bottle we wanted was out. For entrees we ordered the Beef Bourguignon and the Branzino. The Branzino had too many artichokes and was slightly too crispy for me. The beef was excellent but a bit under seasoned. The mashed potatoes were great as well. For dessert, we ordered the Floating Island and an affogato. I have a huge sweet tooth and I loved both!

Nice French restaurant with a number of distanced outside tables on the sidewalk and under an additional outside seating area, as well as a pretty, elegant inside dining area. Every time I've passed Cognac on a warm night over the past month, most of the distanced outside tables were filled. Fortunately there was an open table when we arrived. I realized as we were leaving, when I looked inside the pretty restaurant, that we had been here for dinner and appetizers a couple times before Covid. Service. The server was friendly and attentive, and our food arrived pretty quickly. Food and drinks. - Strawberry Basil Martini. This was a bit tart for my tastes. - Escargot. Very good. - Yellowfin Tuna Tartare. The tuna was fresh, served in a ponzu sauce and with a crunchy matchstick topping. I would actually prefer not having the sauce as it was a bit too tangy and salty for my tastes and felt it overpowered the tuna and avocado. - Steak Frites. This was the highlight of the meal, tender, cooked perfectly, delicious and served with French fries, a tasty Bernaise sauce, and an interesting side of grilled romaine with baked Parmesan cheese on it. Nice French restaurant for dinner with family or friends.

Excellent food with impeccable service. The waiter was charming and attentive without being overbearing. The beef bourguignon was tender and flavorful. We had refreshing and unique cocktails and an excellent Bordeaux. Loved the floating island dessert, too. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but the beautiful space and delicious food made it worth it

Only go if you're in the neighborhood - no need to go out of the way. The food was okay, but nothing special. Service was slow as well. Tuna tartare with miso (4/5) - pretty large portion and the miso sauce was really good. The tuna was fresh; not the best I've ever had, but not bad. The guac was fresh too. Niçoise salad (2/5) - paid extra for seared tuna and it was way over cooked. Nothing stand out about this dish. Chicken (2/5) - the sauce was good but there wasn't enough of it. Had the chicken been more moist, it would have made up for the lack of sauce. But it was bone dry so we couldn't finish the part that didn't have sauce. Mashed potatoes were good though. We got lattes and cappuccinos to finish and they were good. All in all would not return unless I was in the neighborhood and everywhere else was full.

Had brunch today it was excellent. I had the cold leek soup and mushroom & spinach quiche specials. My girlfriend had the gruyere and ham omelet. Both were satisfying. I also had two glasses of wine - while she had a margarita (yes, it's a French place but they had the margarita on the menu so what the hell) Service was attentive but not overwhelming. Overall, I was very happy with my experience and I would definitely return. Would not hesitate to recommend to others.

If you like French food and great service make reservations restaurant. This is the third time we've been here and the food seems to get better every time. The service is on par with the food. My wife and I eat out four times a week. I would rate this as one of our top choices when we come to New York.

I had a dinner with my friend just 2 days ago and we spend I think good money for 2 ppl ,anyway i was very unpleasant when the waiter brought us a check with gratuity included. I tried to ask him why is that ,and i got answer that the sistem Toast they are using is including tips automatic Funny apparently I work in restaurant on Upper East Side as well and we are using toast for over 4 years,so I know that is not possible. I should report them somewhere more serious. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE I RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE

Dined here last night. Had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. Waiter was disinterested and unfriendly. Came specifically for the Filet burger, which we found out - as we're ordering - was no longer available for the night. The group next to us, however, got that exact dish as we got our food. Decided on the chicken instead which was a small, dry portion not worth the price. Steak frites & onion soup were good. We go to order dessert and I ask if there's anything they don't have, jokingly but also bothered. Turns out they only have 3 desserts for the night, again not including what we came for. Why bring over a menu? We won't be back, especially at those prices.

This used to be a great warm friendly restaurant. Not anymore. On May 18 I made there a reservation for 8:15pm. When my husband and I came the manager (don't know her name) without even seen our reservation said that there are seats available upstairs. Space upstairs is small, tables are literary on top of each other, and it is extremely noisy. She said that we had to wait for half an hour to get table downstairs. It appeared to be a lie. She was not looking at us as if we were totally transparent and didn't bother to tell another hostess what we were waiting for. When I asked another hostess she said that the table could be ready in 5min. The food was not bad but absolutely mediocre, cocktails were just bad. But the worst thing was the arrogant manager who lied to us about table availability and looked above us as if we weren't there. When former manager Michael was there it was one of the best neighborhood restaurants!

Great staff. Great menu. Nice wine list. Wonderful location. I had a quick visit but will b back soon to give a more in depth review.

excellent food and great service. i've been coming here for years. i also love bella blu if i feel like italian food. my favorite dish is the mussels and the sauce in so good I ask for bread to dip it in. Everything on the menu is delicious.. it's also nice to sit outside in the fall

Hosted a dinner for 16 people in the beautiful private room upstairs. The food, the service, the ambiance - everything was first rate. A very comfortable but elegant spot for a private celebration. yghb

No thanks. Been there 3 times and just don't like the place.....not the shed, not the back of the restaurant, not the front of the restaurant. Too loud indoors. Food is just adequate. Same with service. Won't be back.

Had a reservation with my family here about a month ago and it was a nice experience. The food was delicious and the staff was so kind. We sat outside and although the tables were right on the sidewalk, there was still enough space for it to be comfortable. I ordered the salmon burger and it was cooked perfectly; the onions were caramelized and tasted great; I also love avocados, so the guac unexpectedly went well with the salmon. In general, the seafood here was great! The desserts were also good: we had the Valrhona Chocolate Cake and apple Tarte Tatin. It was a little pricey but that's expected of a restaurant in Manhattan. Overall, great vibes and great food!

Went there for dinner on Saturday night. The restaurant is located on a beautiful block. It is a pretty location. However, I ordered the mussels. I love mussels and eat them all the time. The first one did not taste good so I assumed it was just the one mussel. But, after eating a few more I was concerned that I would get sick from them. I was not willing to take that risk. I called the waiter over and told him. The first thing he said was, "no one else has complained" in a very rude manner. He very grudgingly asked if I wanted something else. I put in an order for salmon. He then returned and told me that the chef said that the mussels were fine and that I was the only one to complain. He said it loud enough that all of the tables around me could hear him. He then proceeded to go around to other tables that ordered mussels to ask if they were okay and then pointed at me to saying she says they are bad. So, I was publicly shamed by the waiter. I will never go back. As an aside, the salmon was fine. But, since I was publicly shamed by the waiter, I will also point out that he knew nothing about the wine list. When i was trying to pick the right white wine to go with my meal, his response to my question was that the white wine was white.
