14 Fantastic Specialty Markets in East Portland | Eater Portland

"This micro-grocer started out in 2017 with a coffee counter and produce section, but has since developed into Foster’s hub for specialty groceries. The frozen meat section is of particular note, carrying high quality meats that are often nabbed by Portland’s finest chefs: Visitors will find local producers like Marion Acres chicken, My Brothers Farm bison meat, lamb from Deck Farms, duck from Campfire Farms, and Birkeland Farms’ grass-fed beef in the cases here." - Janey Wong

Portland’s Hottest New Cheap Plates | Eater Portland

"The idea of getting a bread plate isn’t particularly exciting, but this isn’t any regular bread plate. The hidden gem within Vitaly Paley’s stylish new European restaurant is his boyo, a Turkish spinach-and-feta-loaded bread with flavors similar to spanakopita. For $5, a serving of bread comes with a hunk of boyo, as well as a focaccia-style pizza bianca and some stellar olive oil — it’s a filling and shockingly exciting lunch." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Always love coming here and supporting this wonderful shop. Always find the greatest stuff too, like today discovered a life changing sparking yuzu peach drink haha. Love that I can get local produce when the farmers markets aren't open, and appreciate the huge array of vegan and health conscious options here

My wife has done most of our grocery shopping during the pandemic, so she discovered Bread and Roses long before I did. It appears to be a perfect addition to a neighborhood that is attracting a lot of independent businesses. At first glance, this seems to be a small store, but an L shaped corner at the back extends the space quite a bit. You will not find five different brands of any particular product, but the ones that they have are all high quality. On my first visit, I was happy to see a good selection of Equal Exchange coffees and teas. We came away with a variety of tea and a nice bottle of moderately priced wine. Because we were headed elsewhere before going home, we didn't purchase anything requiring refrigeration, but spotting frozen dumplings from Kachka was all I needed to recognize their commitment to excellent products. Looking forward to my next visit.

Google
Fantastic family owned upscale (but fairly reasonably priced) neighborhood market. You'll swear you need more than you went in for. It's like a mini New Seasons w/o breaking the bank. Solid wine selection, local organic meats & produce (as well as many other products that are as well). Plenty of veg and vegan products to boot. Not a super fan of the 50¢ card charge if you spend less than $20, but the owner really does try to keep prices reasonable & says he has the lowest prices - for the brands he carries - in the area.

Google
Amazing selection of meat from local farms. One would normally have to go to a farmers market to find this type of high quality meat from small farms. Lots of other interesting, organic, fair trade, and local items, as well. If you’re looking for a store with only super cheap products made by companies like Proctor & Gamble that exploit people and the environment, this store probably isn’t for you.

Google
I love it here! The prices are similar to (or definitely less than in many cases) new seasons, natural grocers, etc for produce and dry goods. So grateful to be able to walk to a grocery store. A gem of the foster neighborhood!

Google
Such a wonderful neighborhood market! The produce is beautiful and fresh and very affordable. Tons of vegan options at good prices. Wonderful atmosphere, and the owners are kind and helpful. Be sure to save time for a fresh-made latte or other coffee drink, which you can take to go, or sit at the little bar in the window and watch passers-by. (This was my first latte made with Oatly milk, and it was delicious.) Kombucha lovers will find several varieties on tap. I was happily surprised by their broad selection. They have just about everything I would need for my kitchen, and they're walking distance in Foster Powell. I love this place!

Google
Wonderful neighborhood store with high-quality veggies, nice groceries, and mostly-natural household products. Prices can be better than other stores, depends on what you want, but quality is a cut above.

Google
Amazing spot - they pack so much good stuff into such a small space! Very friendly staff, and great produce, plus most of my other grocery needs.

Yelp
Such a well-stocked neighborhood market. Looks small but they pack in everything you need. Amazing selection of produce, wine, tea, beans, grains, pasta, household supplies, & toiletries. Truly amazing how much variety they have. The prices are really reasonable too, they're not trying to up-charge you just bc they can. Loooove this store & will keep coming here regularly.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite grocery stores in town! The wine selection is amazing and the owner knows so much about them. The produce section might be small, but it's all mindfully sourced and conscientious of Season. The snacks are great, the vibe is good, Highly recommend! Grab a coffee there and chat with the owner about the local cheese offerings!

Yelp
Great local market with epic service. Kind and friendly. Highly recommend and will be back.

Yelp
Best grocery store in Portland, NO QUESTION! Calmest, best vibes grocery shopping experience in the city. Stepping foot in a new seasons or fred meyer is torture compared to this place. They price things extremely affordable, with a low mark-up. Great organic produce and high quality food products all around. Owner and employees are super friendly and helpful always! This is a great local small business with good community values to support! Literally is cheaper to shop here- they state they have the lowest prices in town for many of their products

Yelp
What a beautiful gem of a market!! Great addition to the neighborhood. Prices are so reasonable for the quality provided, shopping here is really lovely (quiet, nice lighting, easy to navigate, well organized). It's very out of my way to come here but I don't know if I can go anywhere else again

Yelp
I love this little market. They honestly have a great selection and the atmosphere is just lovely. Everything feels fresh and I love supporting a small independently owned grocery.

Yelp
My fave Portland grocery store. Bread and Roses has a great selection of organic produce and other grocery items (also a great selection of vegan items! : ) as well as household products. They have everything I need - don't need to go anywhere else. Additionally, Sam and his employees are super friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and feel like neighbors each time I'm there.

Yelp
Stopped by this store on a hot summer afternoon while visiting Portland with my kids. They were thirsty and wanted to get something to drink. We walked in and were greeted right away by an employee who I found out later was the owner. The store was small but very well organized, neat and clean. There were a few customers getting their Sunday shopping done. Passing by the produce section I was especially impressed. It looked like it was ready for an organic food magazine photo shoot-every fruit and vegetable was perfectly displayed and looked amazing. My boys selected root beer and grabbed some ice creams. We went to check out and had a nice conversation with the owner and he suggested some lemonade that I had missed in the drink fridge. I ended up getting a bottle and it was really delicious and refreshing. Overall we had a great experience and would come back again. This little store is really a neighborhood gem.

Tracey W.

Yelp
Great selection of items, that was really really impressive, however owner + combination of other reviews stating gripes about rudeness didn't help. It was obvious that talking about choosing watermelons for ten minutes to some rich old couple was the big priority of the day. Anyways I can't afford most of the stuff in there, I'll buy it on EBT if I'm lucky at New Seasons for probably less $$ lmao. It didn't feel personal but apparently other reviews aren't thrilled with the same issue either.

Yelp
This store has a lot of great groceries and this and that. I appreciate the many small shops that are now on about 15 blocks of Foster. This one is the best for fresh organic produce and groceries. The fifty cent charge is for transactions under $8 iirc. Not an unusual or bad business practice and I prefer it to a blanket charge for all transactions. I've only had pleasant experiences with the clerks here.
google avatar

Terradon I.

Yelp
.50 cent charge to use your debit card? In a cashless Covid world that's unkind at best.
google avatar

Juniper R.

Yelp
This little gem has all my family's staples at very reasonable prices. The organic fruits and vegetables are impeccably curated and often higher quality than other shops.
google avatar

Yelp
We've been driving Foster for a long, long time You get home from work just to find we're out of thyme Give me Bread and Roses Fruit and veggie juxtaposes I don't need a cart from grocerymax Basket holds a harvest Life instead of lines Corner store, less a chore, you're looking better all the time

Yelp
Fosters best kept secret - a variety of interesting high quality grocery foods and other health/hygiene groceries arranged in a very palatable way!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. We live within a few blocks, and when Bread and Roses opened up, I was so happy that I could walk to buy groceries. The staff are friendly, and the owner genuinely does his best to provide a carefully curated stock of goods while also thinking carefully about how his business could both be the 'bread' (goods) and 'roses' (care) for the Fo-Po neighborhood. My favorite features of Bread and Roses are their really great wine selection, great and fresh organic produce (I dare you to find a more beautiful bunch of kale), and little chats with Sam about his family and any happenings in the store.

Yelp
I can't believe that I haven't been coming here since moving to FoPo. I came in over the weekend to check out the inventory and get a few treats, and now I have a new favorite grocery store! It looks smaller from the outside, but trust me, this market is big enough to do your weekly shopping at. Speaking as a vegan, they've got so much vegan stuff that I normally have to go to two or three stores to find, so it's exciting to be able to find it in an independent grocery store. Highlights include vegan beef and chicken bouillon cubes, a variety of vegan yogurts, Field Roast mini corn dogs, Gardein canned soups, and TVP from Bob's Red Mill. The wine selection is beautiful and has great prices. I'm more of a cider drinker, and they have ciders that I've never heard of before, which is exciting! I would also say that this is a great spot for cyclists and hikers to stop by. They have a ton of great trail snacks. Check out the clearance shelf, I've gotten some great shelled pistachios and fruit snacks for half-off! I think the 5 item minimum is a smart business practice during the pandemic. My only suggestion would be to post a few more signs throughout the store, rather than just on the door.

Yelp
Just found this market today and fell in love. If you're looking for a local place to find local goods, check them out! Produce section was beautiful, there was a great selection, and lots ld COFFEE!!! Owner was super friendly and i know there is a 5 item minimum, but this is to help make sure his business survives this pandemic. Buy local!!!

Matt S.

Yelp
The owner is extremely rude. On multiple occasions. I will never shop here again. It's unfortunate because it's a neat store and has great stuff. But I can not support this guy.
google avatar

Yelp
Great local market! Lots of fresh produce, packed with a variety of options, and a friendly place to shop. Thoughtful vegan, vegetarian, paleo, and organic options.
google avatar

Sara T.

Yelp
A wonderful find in the neighborhood! Has organic produce, deli, breads, wine... I was out for a walk and popped in. At the counter, the purveyor relayed that there is a store policy of "5 items" per purchase. A somewhat off-putting comment to my $7 purchase. It was compounded by the next 2 minutes of him explaining that this was "not a convenience store" and then some garble about reducing foot traffic and growing income. This was all said in such a Portlandia fashion, I had to smile. Oh sorry, did I inconvenience you with my money?
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
Owner is not kind. Will not spend another dollar here. In today's time it's incredibly sad that we will take our money outside our community and neighborhood moving forward.

Daisy W.

Yelp
The store is nice and has a solid stock of products, prices are fair. The fruits and vegs are local and yummy. My biggest problem is the owner is very chatty and favors regulars to the point where he is rude when you only come in for a few things. He has said things to me on multiple occasions that are just unnecessary. Besides that I will continue to come in as it is a convenient location for me.

Jaime P.

Yelp
This is such a great little market that seems to have everything. Sam, the owner puts so much though into what he puts in his store. Come once for great quality food/ produce/ goods. Stay for the sense of pride and quality Sam takes in his market and the neighborhood.
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
This place is great. It's a dream to have a such a sweet little market in our neighborhood. To those posters who were complaining about the owner's personality, he's just from New York. We love him.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Bread and Roses is a wonderful find! Crossroads of high quality local offerings and great prices. The owner (Sam) is friendly and helpful and seems to have the back story/personal connection with many of the makers of products on his shelves. Every other customer I've bumped into has been super cool and friendly as well. It really feels like a community when shopping here. Fresh produce, great coffee, wine and kombucha, too!
google avatar

Kerri L.

Yelp
It really pleased me to visit this newer small organic products market with Ron. He first discovered it when looking for avocados and came back saying nothing but good things about all their organic products and about the owners. I was first struck by the community spirit feeling therein. People stopping by to greet Sam, the owner, by name and chatting with him was music to my ears Ron introduced me, and I enjoyed talking with him about the market. People crave this contact these days. Sam can also talk about each of the products and why he carries them. The produce is gorgeous, and both Ron and I bought some. He also carries most anything else one needs in an organic market, including my beloved black licorice. There is also a small coffee bar with some bakery-type sweets (I saw mention of gluten free, etc.) and they looked yummy. I unfortunately was fairly caffeinated up already, but knowing I will return, a coffee tasting time will definitely happen. There is a small seating area for adults and another adorable one for the younger crowd. So please come in and meet the owners. What they're doing is vital to Portland's future. Market of Choice and Whole Foods and the rest are great, but smaller markets like this are the back bones of communities, and this is exactly what the FoPo and Lents' neighborhoods need. While you're at it, drop a note to our mayor, Ted Wheeler, and tell him he needs to visit here and also NWIPA , their next door neighbor, because this is where the real Portland lies.

Yelp
We just moved to the neighborhood and we're so stoked to find this adorable market stocked with thoughtful products and ingredients of a holistic nature. However I was very disappointed to see that they have a five item minimum during the pandemic. I can understand it and I am not terribly mad but to as a local neighborhood corner market half the time people are going there are for last minute items such as me this morning, I only needed eggs. I walked away spending $25 when I really just needed eggs. I am sad that they have this rule because it's the nature of a neighborhood corner market to be able to just go and buy random things here and there like an onion or some flour. So other than that I would highly recommend this place and I hope they drop the five item limit very soon. I was also disappointed that they did not take cash at this time. I think we are all very well aware of the fact that the virus doesn't transfer on surfaces and hasn't been linked back to money usage so I find this to be a little ridiculous. They have awesome selection though so I will be back! Just wanted to leave a review so that people could be forewarned to be prepared to spend more money than what you intended!

Yelp
Bread and Rose's response to COVID-19 has been a great example of their business values. Calm, friendly service, high-quality products, clear, straightforward protocols that allow you to shop with ease while protecting the health of their community.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
Yes! Some may be critical of the gentrificational (new word) nature of a little market full of spendy organic and natural foods, a coffee bar, etc...in this part of town. But would I like another fast food hole or toxic bar for working class folks to waste their money in, in any neighborhood? No. Quality food costs more, period. Your body knows the difference, and frankly it is a public health concern for us all. Garbage food is subsidized on all sides, not actually cheaper for anyone, including the planet. I am thrilled that I can walk to get healthy food now, beyond a corporation such as Fred Meyer, and support local businesses that supply well being such as Tabor Bread. Thank you for being here, B and R. We need you!
google avatar

Ingrid T.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Great selection and conveniently located within walking distance.
google avatar

Kate G.

Yelp
Love this market. High quality goods, very nice owner and staff. The only place I've felt safe shopping at during COVID. I'm so glad my shopping habit has changed so I visit B&R regularly - we are eating so well! Thank you!!
google avatar

Shawn D.

Yelp
I feel fortunate to have this sweet grocery store in our neighborhood! Bread and Roses sells organic produce and offers an ever-expanding array of food items. Sam has, somehow, managed to get a really good small market going that caters to the neighborhood. Prices are competitive given the quality of what is offered. Check it out & patronize this market we are super lucky to have.
google avatar

Treva E.

Yelp
LOVE this place...a wonderful addition needed in the Fo-Po neighborhood. Friendly staff and super awesome knowledgable owner! I love the selection of diet friendly goodies and the gifts/potted greenery is amazing!!! If I needed a quick gift for under $30, this is a great spot. Delicious lattes as well! This market wouldn't be the best to do your weeks of grocery shopping, unless money is no factor. However, for a random veggie, forgotten ingredient or 2, or treat--this is the spot!!! Give them a try!:)
google avatar

Payam T.

Yelp
Fantastic little bodega in the heart of the Foster Powell neighborhood. Good variety of fresh produce and a wine selection that's affordable. Plenty of stuff for vegans and vegetarians too. They even have a coffee bar! Great place to go to shop local and support small business.

Brittany O.

Yelp
I've never really stopped in for the groceries, but I have for the coffee, and may I just say I haven't had a better maple latte anywhere else in Portland. The barista was always quite nice too. Weirdly, whenever I've stopped by, there's always been some renovations happening.
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
This place is clean, well lit but cozy, has a personable owner and a great selection of food. Bread and Roses is in the trenches, up against the goliaths in the grocery world. They know this so they bring it. In shopping here you can be sure that all the products have been hand selected because of their quality and provenance. More locally sourced products here than any New Seasons or Whole Foods easily. Prices are super reasonable and come nowhere near the Zupans of the world. Sam the owner is easy to talk to and welcomes feedback. He is there everyday and has a pulse on our neighborhood. Bread and Roses is the cure to the modern ailment of grocery shopping.
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere and energy in the space. The products they carry are high-quality, lots of local products, a good selection of vegan items (including Oatly!), lovely organic produce, and friendly/caring owners. I can't recommend it highly enough!
google avatar

Lissy F.

Yelp
What a lovely neighborhood grocery store! The organic coffee beans are such a great deal. The shop is very clean and the people are very friendly. Highly recommend supporting this neighborhood gem!
google avatar

Yelp
Cool place. Part cafe', part grocery store. Fair prices and friendly staff. Good place to get a coffee on the go.

Ryan D.

Yelp
Fantastic small, local owned grocery store. Popped in any time I forgot an item or two from my list, or I'm a few pantry items short. Covid restrictions of 5 items means short waits in line. Friendly neighborhood grocer!
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
What a great store. Well stocked with organic products, vegan/vegetarian friendly and at fair prices. I'm so happy to welcome B&R to the neighborhood! I'll be back again for an espresso drink and more groceries. They really fill the need for a small corner store-and with a wide selection!
google avatar

Eavan M.

Yelp
Organic food sold in a pleasant space within walking distance of my house. Very convenient!
google avatar

Yelp
Delightful coffee & great market - check it out!
google avatar

Geoff Z.

Yelp
Quality produce and less expensive than you'd assume. Has stopped me from going to New Seasons when I just need a few things. Happy to support a business that is run by good people too. Very friendly, I'll keep going back. Would love to see them expand in the local farms frozen meat department. I've seen some sausages and some ground beef that have looked amazing. That would have me popping in weekly to see what's available. Cheers!

Amanda F.

Yelp
Excellent neighborhood grocer! You can tell the owner puts a lot of thought into the products he stocks, as many are organic and local to Oregon, and everything in the shop is high quality. The customer service is beyond my expectations, as the owner is willing to bring in products he does not currently stock on an individual basis. The prices are competitive with other grocery stores, and I love that my money is going towards a small local business.
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
Finally had a chance to pop in today and pick up a few things for lunch on my way home. Nice selection of fresh veggies and fruit. Very kid friendly! Definitely plan on stopping by more often. Super friendly staff (owner). Thanks!
google avatar

Dr. Pepper S.

Yelp
Small carefully, and thoughtfully curated grocery in the neighborhood. It's so nice to be able to walk and get the necessities for dinner, lunch and snacking. Simply the best produce I've found in Portland and when it's time to check out you're usually rung up by the owner. A very nice change and real alternative to places like New Seasons with all their unethical labor and political practices.
google avatar

Martha P.

Yelp
Way more than a neighborhood market! Bread & Roses offers high quality organic produce that is comparatively affordable vs. other specialty markets in Portland; plus they have some great wines, good snacks and a forthcoming coffee bar. This is now my new favorite grocery and wine supplier in Portland and well worth a cross-town visit!
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
I love this market. So happy to be able to walk to get fresh produce. Great addition to the neighborhood, plus friendly service!
