The 16 Best Bakeries in O‘ahu | Eater

"Owner Chris Sy, who was singled out in the Alinea cookbook for his dedication and perfectionism when he worked with Grant Achatz at Trio, applies that same focus to breads and pastries at Breadshop. In addition to a classic lineup of country breads and croissants, he also subtly folds Hawai‘i flavors into some of his burnished carbs, in items like furikake focaccia or a croissant with spinach and taegu (candied codfish). Pastries are available in boxed assortments, but during the pandemic, all orders must be placed in advance online." - Martha Cheng

I’d heard whispers about this carb-loaded praise about this place. People were walking away looking like they’d just found true love… in a paper bag of fresh-baked goodness. I managed to swoop in right as they pulled the brioche from the oven, according to their top-secret (but publicly posted) bake schedule. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The smell alone could’ve solved world peace. That warm, doughy cloud hit my face and suddenly my heart felt like it was wrapped in a buttery hug. Brioche, with its rich ingredients, is like the fancy cousin of regular bread, sweet, soft, a little bougie, but still down to earth. Not as buttery as a croissant, not as sugary as a cookie… just perfectly balanced. The brioche lives in the moment. By the next day, it lost a bit of its pillowy charm. But pop it in the toaster, slap on some butter, honey, or your jam of choice and BOOM. You’re right back in that cozy little moment of joy.

Can't beat a local bread shop that makes delicious baked goods at unbeatable prices. Ordering is easy online and pick up is quick and efficient. Parking is available in a parking lot behind/adjacent to the building. All of the breads and baked goods are larger than you'd expect. The ciabatta is over a foot long and the slice of potato focaccia was the entire length of the bakery box (started eating before I remembered to snap a photo 😅).

Google
Waialae bread shop- my favorite is the French bread, so much classy and tasty than the Cosco French bread. I could tell that its made with special care & ingredients. Sourdough loaves and baguet is my second favorite. Taegu spinach manchego croissant is an interesting one. I made this garlic oil dip that goes perfectly well.

Google
Best baked goods on island! So much bread variety, from the classic city loaf to pumpernickel and beet rye. The pastries are all divine, and I appreciate the mix of sweet, savory and seasonal flavors. The chocolate chip cookie is quite literally the perfect cookie. The whole process from order to pickup is a breeze. What a gem, keep it up!

Google
Swung by on a whim and the guava cheese Danish and prosciutto croissant were both amazing. The layers.... the flakiness... simply incredible. Cute streetside window with fast pickup.

Duane Brown

Google
Great bakery in Honolulu. The plain croissant was flaky, crispy and flavourful as any amazing croissant I've had on the mainland. I'd eat it again in a heartbeat. I also got a Danish with a local fruit. Not sure how to write the fruits name but it was mild in flavour and tasty with everything else on the danish. Highly recommend stopping by here if you're in the city. You can also order online and pick up. If you don't, you get to pick whatever is left for the day. They had a little of everything baked today when I walked over from Waikiki.

Google
The bread is one of the best on the island. But it is hard to buy as you need to order in advance online even if you are standing in front of the store. I like to eat pastries in the morning so it doesn’t make sense for us to only be able to pick up between 2pm and 6pm. It is a good place to pick up fresh bread for dinner. But you will have to save your loaf and eat it the next day if you want baked goods for breakfast or lunch. First bakery where you can’t buy before 2pm. One trick is to order on Farm Link and have them take care of getting the bread for you to avoid disappointment.

Nicole Bartolome

Google
Lowkey addicted to this bakery. The team they have back there is pure magic! Their ham and cheese croissant is like nothing else you’ll find on the island. Morning buns and the standard sourdough loaf should be a staple in your morning. It is recommended to order ahead online as they sell out quick! Parking is on the left side of the building, free for the first hour (scan QR code at the bakery window).

Yelp
Making the dough in Kaimuki... Breadshop is exactly that and what they do incredibly is making bread and some other pastries as well and have seen them many times as I do love to swing by their neighbor The Curb as parking here is the best with decent amount of parking right in the back of the building. Hearing so many great things about this place as so many do so as well as much as they seem to have an abundance of inventory you must order online to have a bite of this gluten goodness. It's actually easy as i did so as I sat on the parklet and agree that it's a much easier system as it's contactless and simple versus asking various questions of what they have available since there isn't a display or menu of their offerings making it a easy process to decided as well. With that I enjoyed my treat right at the parklet as i just couldn't wait as i could smell it through the box and what was it..."Dahi Toast" and you'd think you can just get it again...it depends you gotta check the site as many items do sell out and I have yet to see it again cause if I do it's mine! The service is so nice and friendly and just enjoyed all the love they put in to each product shows...they open 2pm-6pm Wednesday to Sunday, closed on Monday and Tuesday come see and smell what it's all about. Thank you!

Yelp
Bread in Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawaii... When I read Five-star reviews by my friends, Rod U., Jo Y., Nat N., Amy M., Ric C., Brian M., Nadia K., Kira K., Bruddah Fran C., and others, I wanted to get bread from Breadshop, but... bread has carbs... uhg! My doctor will find out and scold me!!! Then, my friend, Randy S., got Review Of The Day (ROTD) for Breadshop... arggg! That pushed me over the top... I had to go get some bread! Located on the corner of Waialae Avenue and 8th Avenue, Breadshop shares a free parking lot with The Curb. Enter from 8th Avenue. Service is efficient because everyone orders online! Select the day and time of pickup. The menu varies from day to day. I got a croissant, Mountain Apple tart, and a loaf of Furikake Bread... wow! I sat outside the shop in the dining area and devoured that crisp croissant with soft, airy interior. OMG! I followed up with the Mountain Apple tart... it was OK in comparison with that croissant... it was fabulous! At home, I cut the Furikake Bread into slices that could fit my plastic containers. Of course, I chomped on several slices! The nori and sesame seeds flew around my floor and table, but it was worth it! It's not easy to make bread... I really appreciate the different flavors and pastries that are created by Breadshop! I'll return for sure and try everything!

Yelp
Review very limited in scope. This is not a shop where you can walk in and look at the products in the counter. If you want to try their products, I suggest you order online, a day or two in advance. The menu items on Fri-Sun are more robust and give you a better selection. There is a sign in the window with a QR code which directs the customer to review and order online "yes, even if you are here"; so scan the code, surf the menu, place items in the cart, create an account, add payment info, check out with your order pickup time appointment scheduled every 30 minutes. Onerous for sure. Once there - everything looks amazing, but loafs of bread are starting at $10 and pastries starting at $5.50. Which seems contrary to the first sentence in their mission statement, "we believe that good bread should be part of our daily lives, not a luxury or treat reserved for special occasions." - so if my family of 4 goes through a loaf every other day, my bread budget is no less than $150 a month. Labor aside, it's only flour, salt, yeast and water. Being in town just for a short time, I have no need for a loaf of bread. But I wanted to try the pastries. At 4pm the only one left was the Orange-Cardamom Morning Bun. I prefer mine to be sticky, carry some weight and be chewy. Since I can't see it in the case, I had no idea what it looked like. But when I got it, this one didn't check any of those boxes. The flavor was nice but on the reserved side. I also tried the Crispbread. It was definitely more on point. In fact it's very good! While I understand that people need to earn a living wage, rent has to be paid, and the lights have to stay on, so could be said for the consumers. And when I think of a bakery I want to see and smell the products which adds to the visceral experience. A premium price isn't solely justified on product alone. With the ordering process, the sidewalk experience, and starting prices for a loaf of bread - I don't consider this a user friendly experience. But if I was somewhere and someone had a loaf available for me - I most certainly would dig-in! I mean it is called, "Breadshop". The totality of the experience as a whole is the basis of the review rating.

Yelp
This place makes great bread but I wasn't impressed by the pastries. There's a few things that I think hold it back from being 4 stars. You have to pre-order stuff and you need to jump on it immediately each week when they release the shopping slots. I'm usually stuck on work calls at 9 am on a Tuesday so by the time I got on their website just before noon, most things were already sold out. Then, you have to go pick it up during the window you requested. It's hard for me to pinpoint within a 15 minute window when I'll be able to buy some bread a week ahead of time. Not sure why they set it up this way but after weeks of missing my order window I finally managed to see a few things I wanted to try. They say they'll run your order out to your car but I texted them twice and waited 10 minutes bc I had my dog with me and didn't want to leave her but nobody answered the messages or came out so I had to roll all the windows down and dart up to the window to collect my things. I spent almost $9 on a mango Danish with tapioca pudding inside that fell apart immediately and was burnt around the edges and all the coconut flakes fell off it. That was an epic fail. Taste and execution were totally off. The $7 pandan croissant was as empty inside as a game room after a raid. The croissant was good but it needs more than a whiff of filling. The $12 load of olive ciabatta was actually worth the cost and it was a really divine piece of bread. It makes amazing sandwiches, and a hearty way to shovel butter and other dips into the face. The crust has a nice crunch, the inside is chewy with the right amount of texture and they're generous with the olives. I can see why this place is named Breadshop and not "pastry" or "bakery" in the name. I would go back for more bread and maybe something savory but I'm not getting ripped off on their Danish or croissants again.

Yelp
They have my favorite bread! When you cut open a fresh Sesame Semolina it has a fragrant nutty smell from the sesame and the crumb has nice airy irregular holes and a very nice chew as is, or toasted. Chris Sy has some serious baking chops. A couple other favorites .... The City is a white sourdough with a satisfying tang and smell. I still prefer Tartine's version - I will bring back wrapped loaves in my suitcase - but in Honolulu, Breadshop's sourdoughs, City or Country, are better than the rest. Another really good one is the Brioche. I like toasted bread and this brioche stands up well - walk next door to The Curb Kaimuki for the Kaya Toast and see. There is an assortment of different pastries that you can sometimes purchase individually, or grab in a blind four pack assortment. Sometimes they're meh, sometimes they're eye opening tasty. They hold up well the next day - you warm them up at 200 degrees for a few minutes, don't try to rebake them at a high temp! The croissants have to be on anyone's top three list in the city. Great crisp layers that flake off like snowflakes when you take a bite, a slightly dry airy interior, and a good soft chew. I get into phases where I crave a straight up crispy, buttery, plain croissant and I usually have to go here to find something that satisfies me. That said, I have issues. I dislike not being able to see and select what I want - online ordering has its usefulness but seeing a nice display is part of the pleasure of buying high quality baked goods. And, having quantities limited means often finding out something is already sold out one or days before you want to buy it. When I want to pick up a bread but find the plain croissants sold out or not for sale that day it leaves me a little peeved; and having to pick up bread in the afternoon goes against my instincts for buying baked goods. If the bread is sold out I also will not bother first ordering and pre-paying for a single plain croissant, then driving to pick it up in the afternoon to eat tomorrow - I'm going up the street for my croissant early in the morning to eat that day. But, I do really like that Sesame Semolina.

Yelp
Can I be a little honest? Overhyped. Did alot of research on this place and read all the local pr articles before paying the online order of a box of 3 assorted croissants (pre-chosen for you at random), and a Country bread. The croissants were oily, not very crispy, and I really really disliked the taegu and cheese stuffed one (taegu is a Korean side dish of dried seasoned squid with a gochujang base sauce). The taegu was overly soft and squishy and I didn't like the seasoning. The country bread was not a dense loaf. In fact, it was slightly tough, and the inside was nearly hollow. The shop is not a kupuna friendly ordering system. Hours are inconvenient. Price points are higher for *artisanal bread and pastries. Maybe I am not ordering the correct pastries and breads that are worth the hype. The pictures everyone shares sure are beautiful, and they are beautiful to look at. But the taste and quality was not there for me. I don't think I'll purchase again any time soon.

Yelp
Ordering is easy through the Tock website. You select the items you want and schedule your pick-up date and time. They will send a text message when your order is ready to be picked up. The parking lot entrance is along 8th Ave and you can park there and pick-up your order at the small window. The shop looks tiny and don't think they allow you to go inside. I ordered the brown butter oat bread and was amazed at how fresh and delicious it was. For the size and quality of the loaf, I'd say ~$13 is a fair price. Excited to try more items!

Yelp
Feeling in need of a pastry fix, I was scrolling through Yelp reviews and other sources for a good pastry shop on Oahu. I really hit the jackpot with Breadshop. The pastries are made fresh daily and have a good variety (missed the nonna pie because it was sold out by the time I ordered). I loved the buttery flaky pastry crust and chocolately center of the chocolate crossiant. It's a must try in my opinion. The furikake bread is also well flavored and delicious, but huge! It took our family all week to eat it. I appreciate that their pastries are on preorder so you know what's available rather than head all the way to the shop and find out that your favorites are sold out after a ridiculously long line. I also love the neighborhood surrounding this shop. Lots of local spots to support once you devor your pastries!

Yelp
Popped by to see if we could buy a loaf or two without an order online, on the spur of the moment, and were happy that they obliged. Friendly service and hot fragrant bread...yum! The sourdough was perfect, tough chewy crust and soft inside with a slightly acidic taste. We bought a baguette which was equally as good too. Yes, it is online ordering mostly, yes it is expensive, is it worth it? Definitely yes. Treat yourself to a beautiful hand made loaf, freeze half and enjoy it when you deserve a treat.

Yelp
I just picked up my order and noticed this item was still warm, everything but the lox bagel. Oh my goodness. I got the last one and wish I had another. It was smoky, dill, capers, onions, cream cheese were on point, but those roasted vegetables on top, lightly pickled, complex, may I please have another. I'm saving my pain au chocolat for the morning. I know they're awesome. I already cut into my slab bread to start prepping for soup crostini and had to eat the heel with some balsamic, 10/10. Will buy everything again. Thank you Breadshop! Your online ordering platform and friendly staff make this so easy!

Yelp
Had the pleasure of sampling the flat bread at a bbq and had to find this place and grab a couple loaves myself! Pretty sure I could kill a whole baguette if left unsupervised.... With zero self control. Order through tock on their website link through yelp. I was skeptical at first because there are no walk ups, but the time reservation and ordering system make everything painless as far as knowing what you're going to get before it sells out. Believe me, it sells out fast. I just walked up and grabbed my order at the window near my reservation time. Super easy and love the aesthetic of the place! This place knows bread. What a gem to have on the island and I'm so happy to have finally discovered it. I will be back to try the other delicacies at a later date but this will be my go to for a specialty loaf from now on. Thanks for the amazingly crafted loaves and pastries, Breadshop! Cheers

Yelp
Ummmm can we take like a super long pause and talk about this croissant loaf?!?!? Since this is my 3rd review, I had to try some new stuff. For $25 I HAD to try this croissant loaf and mannnn am I sure glad I did. Being mixed and having Danish blood, butter is an important food group in my life. This bread did not need it at all! It was PERFECT! While I'm sure butter would still be tasty on it, it didn't need it. If my first or second review didn't lure you in, hopefully this one does! I got a baguette this time as they were out of epi but it was still good. Epi still is my fave. We opted for flatbread as well instead of the furikake flatbread and while it was good, we will stick to the furikake one.

Yelp
My absolute favorite bakery on island. This place knows how to do BREAD. I love that they have both sweet and savory options, but just their plain city loaf is such a treat. I love that they have seasonal breads that they will rotate (the calamansi brioche was so fluffy, creamy and tart) but also they have their regulars, like their chocolate babka. Their savory breads are great as well! Try their nonna pie - trust me. They use the toast site for online ordering so you always know what is in stock before you get there, but they do sell out quick. Once in a while when they make too much bread they will post on their instagram that they are selling the breads at a discount, which is a nice excuse way to get double the amount of bread!
google avatar

Mia M.

Yelp
Breadshop is our absolute favorite place for bread. Our favorite is their flatbread - it's an incredibly delicious focaccia with a perfectly crunchy exterior and squishy interior. Their orange cardamom buns are the perfect breakfast snack, and we've never been disappointed by the box of mystery pastries. You have to order online through tock, but you can pickup at anytime even if it's not the time you selected. They often sell out though, so the selection may be slimmer if you're ordering day of, especially in the afternoon. There's a parking lot out back that's shared with The Curb and usually has spaces.

Yelp
I will always support locally owned businesses and despite the 3 star review, I will still come here because I like their Taegu croissant and City bread. I've bought so many assorted pastry boxes over the years and I still like trying their pastries like the Maritozzo con panna but each time I buy from them, I think, holy sh*t this is so expensive. Spending $6.50 on a croissant from a worker who isn't even friendly is insane. Spending $12.00 on a small mango mousse pie, smaller than my hand with the hardest crust and liquified filling is also nuts. Like I said, I'll still come here but I only recommend their regular breads.

Yelp
First of all thank you for all the hard work that goes into the wonderful bread you make! - it truly is a service to the community to have such an amazing and creative bakery and providing fresh and healthy alternatives to store bought bread. Bravo and please keep up the good work! But I would implore you to not forget our kupuna like bread too. The strictly online or app system unfortunately presents a barrier and excludes people who are just not tech savvy and/or prefer to walk up & pay with good old fashioned greenbacks. If I'm not mistaken this system is a holdover from the dark days of lockdowns. However let's not overlook the fact that the little interpersonal exchange of visiting your local baker can be a highlight of someones day. Please consider a senior day for them and I'm sure you will encounter some happy new customers that were right around the corner all along :)

Yelp
Yes, I ate this entire box of four pastries by myself in a day or two. They were that good haha If you're visiting, be sure to check out their website and Instagram for all the info on how to secure a box of this gold. Sure, it's a bit of an unorthodox way to run a bakery compared to how most shops do things, BUT it is so worth it. Trust me. I grabbed a coffee next door while waiting for my pickup time. It was very chill. There's a few tables outside too. I hope Breadshop continues to do well because I hope to drop by here on future visits!
google avatar

Antoinette L.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with anything that you order here! I love that you can pre-order online in advance. I normally stock up on a couple loaves at once. My family gobbles as much of the bread we can while it's fresh, and then I slice and freeze the rest to eat throughout the week. Our favorites are the rosemary polenta, furikake focaccia, and seeded city. Don't sleep on the pastries either! If you get there early enough, you can grab some coffee from The Curb next door to go with your delicious carbs. The workers are always friendly, and the business is very responsive to messages about orders. If you can't find parking in the lot behind the building, there's likely a spot open on Waialae less than a block away. This place is a real gem, and if you haven't been yet, you're missing out!

Yelp
The customer service is really great. The bread is so delicious an excellent . I purchased Salt focaccia and and olive loaf. I got there they were wrapping guava loaves it smelled Amaaaazing I asked if they had an extra one and they did a Purchased it it was so delicious. But since the breads are so fresh I don't think they use Preservatives....Only purchase what you can eat within a day or two. After 3-4 hours it started to get firm... Yes, it can be refrigerated but the consistency is never the same. So It's better to purchase more frequently than too much at one time. Like I did or have a share plan similar to Costco lol

Yelp
Worth making the trip for some furikake bread! Last visit tried some other pastries an that didn't disappoint either. A little pricing but worth it.

Yelp
Hands down the best croissants in Hawaii. The quality is beyond superb and the prices are more than fair. The praise ends here. It's almost like the owner wants to create barriers to their product. "Tell me you don't want/need my patronage without telling me you don't want/need my patronage." 1. Hours are 2-6pm. Pastries are (to me) a breakfast or lunch treat. Since I don't feel like having them for dinner, I need to enjoy them a day late, affecting freshness. Also, any 9-5pm workerbee will have difficulty picking up during the week. If they were open even 2 hours earlier, pick up could happen during lunch hour to enjoy the bread and pastries for lunch. 2. Ordering is exclusively online. My parents love the bread but struggle with online ordering/technology, and rely on me to order for them. They aren't able to stop by, browse, and purchase on their own. Unfortunate, considering their baked goods are absolutely stunning and the average person would probably buy more than what they planned to, after seeing them. 3. All pastries are not ala carte. The "assorted boxes" limit free choice and commit you to 4-6 random pastries you may or may not prefer. The last two croissant boxes I ordered did not have a single salty item. Annoying and problematic, because the prosciutto and gruyere croissant is by far the tastiest item they offer. IF I remember to check the site timely to place an online order ahead of time, and IF the item I want happens to be available, and IF it fits my schedule to pick up, I will be able to enjoy Breadshop. That's a lot of IFs...

Yelp
My husband bought the Beet sunflower rye bread. The bottom 1/2" of the bread was not fully cooked (sticky) & the sunflower seeds on the top were slightly burnt. The bread cost almost $15, & did not taste good. It actually had no taste. No sweetness, no flavor. The knife used to cut the bread was gooey, with raw dough stuck to it. I tried to contact them to ask if i could get a partial refund for the partially cooked bread, but they had no phone # to call so I'm posting this review to warn others not to buy this bread.

Katelyn L.

Yelp
Got a focaccia on a Sunday afternoon! Love the ordering system since it's convenient to just go and pick up and there is parking next to it! Had high hopes as it is the "bread shop". Wanted to love it, but it fell short for me. The bread was very dry for focaccia and it didn't have any particular taste.

Yelp
Take a leap of faith and order the surprise 4 piece pastry box. I was very skeptical at first but have returned for the 3rd and equally happy experience. It's like opening a surprise gift and every piece was delicious. Some were more exceptional than others but overall turned me into a fan. Consisting of 2 sweet and 2 savory good sized pastries, it actually is worth the price!!!!!

Yelp
Been here multiple times and I love it. Favorite is the olive slab! Slice it up with a little Kerrygold butter or with your favorite cheese and brahhhhhh shmeaaaaannnn! My friends from Japan love this place as well so makes for a good welcome omiyagi. Tried the croissants for the first time the other day and ummmmm just look at my picture. Order online and no scared ask um what they get left if you want to add to your order. Thanks Breadshop, service is always great!

Yelp
I was horrified to see the less than positive (One star) recent reviews by D and K. I just returned from a 2 month sabbatical to PDX and SFO where some of the best bread stores outside of the 'Motherland, France' exist. Breadshop is on its mark for making quality breads and pastries that will only be matched by taking a 5+ hour flight across the left pond and further. Negative comments were only due (my perception) to the store's restrictive policy on operation time, pickup, and ordering on-line. Gimme' a break. You live in a very small place that is not the mainland... But you want mainland (or European) quality baking. You should just move if you cannot adjust to the local environment for what you seek in life. I just placed an order for bread and croissants that will not be available until after 2PM HST. So, I will not have a fresh croissant for 'normal' folks breakfast hours. BFD!! So D & K I humbly ask that you please put things into perspective when dealing with unique things that would not be here if it was not for a few dedicated folks that were expertly trained and care about quality products. PS- I have no stock in this business or personally know any of the staff or owners. I only care about high quality bakery products and this is one of the few (and may be the only) in HNL......

Jimi S.

Yelp
I don't know if the chef is Indian or not, but their savory dahi toast is a great twist on the original version. Dahi tadka in the middle topped with crispy been leaves. Amber at the window has great interpersonal skills. I wish this place existed in Seattle where I came from.

Marc Y.

Yelp
I decided to try the Breadshop today after seeing a line outside their window several times as I drove by. Everything is easily pre-ordered and is ready for pickup at designated times. Read the baker/owner's CV as he's trained at some of the most prestigious places both domestically and abroad . Ordered the pineapple brioche bread with caramelized edges. It was sooo delicious that I could have eaten the entire loaf in one sitting! There is just enough pineapple in every bite and the caramelized edges really added a wonderful taste and texture. There's lots of free parking adjacent to the store and the staff are kind, courteous and helpful. The minute you walk up to the window, you will know that you're in the right place by the fragrant smell of wonderfully crafted, artesian baked goods. Take the time to visit the Breadshop in Kaimuki, you will be happy that you did.

Yelp
On the corner of 8th Avenue and Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki, the Breadshop offers quality baked goods for a moderate price. I've been here a few times though it has been awhile. Parking on the street...metered on Waialae. There is parking in the back for businesses that share the same building, such as The Curb. Ordered via Tock and had the Nonna's Pie. It was good but to my understanding this was more like a Sicilian style pizza pie then a traditional Grandma's pizza. $10 for two large squares.

Yelp
I had to update this review simply to talk about their croissants. These are by far, the BEST croissants I've had on the island. They are definitely comparable to the ones I've had in Europe. These croissants are flaky and super moist and soft on the inside. They are also very buttery and filled with flavor. I ate them over a couple days and they maintained their texture and flavor. Their croissants sell out fast (this was my first time getting my hands on them after multiple attempts), so I highly suggest checking their site as soon as their orders open on Tuesday mornings and getting a box or two of the croissants. And while you're at it, you may as well pick up a few more items as anything from breadshop is fantastic and high quality!

Yelp
The bread was really good, but the service was weird. I understand having a system, which theirs was to order online and then pick up at the window when you're notified your order is ready. I wasn't aware of that before going, so I got there and was the only customer. After standing there a bit, the girl says oh order online. Okay, cool, I can do that, but like there was no let me know if you have any questions, I can make recommendations, nothing. And she wasn't doing anything else haha because there was no one else to help. I don't know, didn't really feel welcomed, she just kind of made me feel dumb. Maybe I'll be back?

Yelp
Try everything. I ordered the pineapple brioche, 4 piece savory and sweet boxes, and potato pie. The puff pastry was done extremely well with its flaky, crispy, and buttery (but not too buttery) texture. In the pastry boxes were: - Pecan Praline Snail - Butterscotch Apple with Cinnamon Streusel Tart - Mexican Hot Chocolate Danish - Zucchini with Garlic Cream Cheese and Herbs - Prosciutto and Gruyère croissant - Taego, Spinach, and Manchego croissant - Cookie butter and mac nut twice baked croissant My personal favorites were the croissants (last 3 listed). The flavors were incredible. Pineapple brioche is a massive loaf that will satisfy me for a while after freezing some slices. Potato pie was also huge and is best reheated before enjoying.

Yelp
Breadshop bread is amazing. The bread itself is delicious but everything about the presentation is exciting. Yesterday I went to pick up my order, which may sound insignificant but let me tell you it was NOT. I set my alarm for 9:00am on Tuesday morning in order to try and be the first person to place an order for this coming Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Being Christmas week I expected there would be a lot of demand however, I didn't expect the sourdough rolls to already be sold out at 9:03am! Alas, I settled on placing my order for Wednesday and figured I would just freeze the bread in preparation for Saturday (if freezing bread is sacrilegious, forgive me, but please add more inventory). I happily arrived promptly at my pickup time of 3:15pm on Wednesday and felt a little thrill as they handed me my perfectly packaged bread bag. I swear it's the packaging that got me so excited, that and the fact that as soon as I took it to my car and closed the door, it immediately smelled like a true bread shop (pun intended). I can't wait to eat the bread for Christmas and I know it is going to be worth every ounce of effort I put in to securing this order (and my family better be thankful). The only reason I am giving four stars is because I do feel that there should be more inventory so that it is not so competitive to buy bread. Items should not already be sold out at the time the menu is released.

Yelp
My favorite croissants on island! Super buttery and flakey. Also they have unique flavors like taegu, spinach, and manchego (one of my favs). This shop is order online and pick-up only. Even if you're already there at the window. It would be nice if they had a payment option at the window, even if it was cash only. Or if they added Venmo and PayPal as options. It's kind of difficult to enter all your information and manually type your credit card when you're already at the window. I had cash on me and usually like to give cash tip or would've just given them a $20 for my $16 croissants and let them Lee the change. Unfortunately you have to go through the online order process even if you're there already. Today I got another surprise assorted croissant box. This time it had a pecan praline snail, prosciutto and Gruyère croissant, and twice baked chocolate croissant with Earl grey custard and raspberry jam. All of them were so ono! The pecan praline snail is one of my new favorite sweet items. I took bites of all three and my husband (my personal goat) finished them all off. Definitely stop by if you're in Kaimuki! Walk over to the curb next door for some great coffee to go with your pastries!

Yelp
Honolulu has a lot of great restaurants when it comes to Asian food, especially Japanese, but it is not easy to find good European food. Luckily for us, there is Breadshop in Kaimuki, which is a bakery that sells excellent Danish and croissants. The place is owned by Christopher Sy, whom I was pleasantly surprised to learn is an alumna of my alma mater, the University of Chicago. He then went onto cook at some of the worlds best restaurants, including Tru, Alinea, and The French Laundry before coming back to Honolulu to open his new bakery. We got the pastry box, which came with the Makaha Mango and Tolentino Honey Cake Danish, Kaya Calamansi Brioche Tart, Prosciutto and Gruyère Croissant, and Blueberry Corn Muffin Bostock. My friend that I went with is a judge on Food Network Canada's Top Chef Canada and we both agreed that the pastries here are on par with pastries that you can get in international cities like Paris, New York, and Tokyo using unique local ingredients. I only wish that they had seating and that we could order and pay at the counter instead of online. Hopefully they will continue to be successful so that they will be able to get a bigger place in the near future.

Yelp
Really yum. Pricey but good. Order ahead. Great toasted with butter or bread as a grilled cheese. Street parking.

Yelp
I am a bread lover! I will whole heartedly say that breadshop is the best bakery in Hawaii. I don't get out to Kaimuki side very often so I went crazy and bought like $80 worth of bread. Oh my gosh so good! I had to freeze some of the bread and bread is one of those items that freezes well. My supply is running low I need to go back!!

Yelp
Breadshop is my newest staple source of carb delicacies especially since the likes of Love's Bakery and Kaneohe Bakery have recently (and sadly) closed. Breadshop is more specifically a small hand-crafted bakery selling made-from-scratch, artisanal breads daily, including flat bread, loaves, croissants, focaccia & brioche. Christopher Sy knows his craft. He's inspired by legendary Parisian baker Lionel Piolane, who crafted bread the old-fashioned way. Sy started out selling his loaves at farmer's markets but now I am thrilled he's opened up his own shop! For my first order, I ordered the orange brioche $15, an assortment of croissants $15, and a furikake flat bread $10. The products are not cheap, but they are hearty in size and of a quality that's hard to match elsewhere in Hawaii. The orange brioche was fantastic. Soft, buttery, orange struesel, cinnamon, eggs, and pieces of fruit and nuts which I think are pistachios, with a generous dusting of powdered sugar. I enjoyed slicing them in the mornings, drizzling some cinnamon honey butter and placing them under the broiler or toaster oven until it's warm and toasty. I really enjoyed the croissants. Can you tell I am still dreaming about chocolate croissants? Even the plain was amazingly buttery, flaky and delicious. The assortment will be a surprise. Mine included savory varieties -- prosciutto and gruyere cheese croissant, and taegu spinach and manchego cheese croissant. All were extraordinary. The furikake flat bread is very large. It's best eaten fresh but if you can't, I re-heated it in the oven but it's not the same and is a little hard and dry. It is also best with a little butter. So how can you indulge as I have? It is important to know they do not accept walk-ins (even though you'll see people waiting outside the shop). All orders are by reservation and done online. Order online only through TOCK https://www.exploretock.com/Breadshop HOURS Pickup Only Curbside Pickup Available Thursday 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM Friday 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM Saturday 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM Sunday 2:00 PM - 6:30 PM (Closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) They are located at 3408 Waialae Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816 (Corner of 8th Ave & Waialae Ave in Kaimuki) and for curbside pickup, wait for the shop to text when your order is ready and let them know by reply to the text that you have parked. Parking is in the Finance Factors parking lot, Diamond Head side of 8th Ave., mauka of Waialae Ave. Now the ordering process -- click on the website address and create an account. Secret Tip: the Reservations are "open" for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday bread days at about 9 a.m. on Tuesdays. I suggest you set your alarm even before then to make sure you don't miss your opportunity to put in a reservation. Specialty reads and signature croissant and pastry selections change daily, but they also have their usual loaf selections. Once you sign up and are ready to reserve, you'll have to pick a day and a time first before you can choose your selections. Sometimes I like to see the selections first before committing. Some of the scrumptious selections you'll find: City Sourdough Chocolate Brioche Regular Brioche Furikake Focaccia/Flat Bread Orange Cardamom Bun Pastries - various croissants Butter special collab Mushroom Flatbread Chocolate sesame Orange Cardamom Bun Broccoli and garlic cream cheese danish Tomato and garlic cream cheese danish Candied kumquat and financier Danish Guava vanilla bean brioche tart with coconut streusel (OMG!) Streusel brioche bun Pecan praline snail Almond kumquat bostock Almond calamansi bostock Almond triple Berry twice baked croissant Let me tell you, I have not been successful getting my hands on the chocolate croissants yet. I believe they are the first to go if you are a step behind on securing reservations. Perhaps one day...I'll be lucky. Or maybe Breadshop will impose a limit on the amount of chocolate croissants allowed per order. Tock has implemented a non-negotiable $1 Order Fee. This fee will be automatically applied to all orders and goes directly to Tock. Breadshop understands that these are challenging times for everyone and we sincerely appreciate your decision to shop with us. If you find you are unable to afford this additional expense, please use the discount code NOFEES at checkout for $1 off your order. You may use this code as often as you wish. But I feel $1 is more than reasonable for a service like this. I just love Breadshop and I can't wait for my pickup tomorrow: chocolate brioche $15, and cherry and spiced pecan loaf $10.50. Enjoy some for yourself!

Yelp
We ordered a box of pastries and eating them was like a religious experience. They were so so good and we regretted not getting some bread with our order because it looked amazing. Our order was ready on time and easy to pick up.

Yelp
Lured by the aroma of fresh bread we landed at this place. We had no idea about this hidden gym until we this aroma hit our nose across the street. We ordered pineapple Brioche and Marinara flat bread. Soooo damn yumm. Crispy on the outside and super soft and fluffy on the inside We were lucky to get this before it got sold out, unfortunately the Morning Bun was out of stock but this place is definitely worth ordering from..

Yelp
Love for Butter x Breadshop Special Collab 2.11.2021 Love for Butter, a Californian breadshop, had a special collaboration with Breadshop for two days. The order form went live on Tuesday for a Thursday or Friday pickup. I had set my alarm the night before so I could jump onto Tock (the online ordering platform) before these miracle pastry boxes sold out. Here's what they offered: Assorted Pastry Box ($35) - Adobo Pop Tart, Candied Pineapple & Dark Chocolate Roll, Korean Cheesy Bun, Lilikoi Brioche, Pineapple & Vanilla Rum Custard Croissant Tart, Traditional Croissant The Korean Cheesy Bun was one of my favorites. I've always wanted to try this sweet cream cheese-filled garlicy sweet bread before, and they totally nailed it. The Adobo Pop Tart featured super tender and flavorful meat, and the addition of what I think were peppercorns brought out bright notes. The Lilikoi Brioche was a fan favorite too. The creamiest lilikoi spread inside of a soft fluffy brioche 3pc Kouign Amann Box ($15) This box came with three beautiful kouign amann in the original plain, yuzu, and chocolate flavors. I've had numerous kouign amann in France and finally found one that is comparable to the ones i had in Bretagne, the home of these delicious creations. The outside was extremely flaky, bottom beautifully caramelized and the inside outrageously buttery but not super sweet. Strong Yuzu flavor & smooth chocolate, respectively. The ordering process was super easy, as always. You just pick a date and time that you want to pick up, choose your breads/pastries and pay online, then you'll get a confirmation email. On the day of, you'll get a text once your box is ready to be picked up. Then, you just go to the front, tell them your name, and they'll give you your goods. As simple (and delicious) as that!

Yelp
Breadshop has the best fresh bread! I found out about this place through Instagram. It was so easy to order from the link in their bio. They have a variety of different breads, it was so hard to choose! I kept seeing everyone post their amazing croissants so I got the 3 assorted croissants. I also decided to get the city and brioche. Everything was so good! I loved their croissants and it's so cute how they even give you a note that tells you exactly which ones you received. I had to give some bread to my friend because I didn't expect the loaves to be so huge. My favorite was the brioche because it was so soft and buttery. It was so easy and simple to pick up. When you order online, you select the date and time for pick up. You also pay online so picking up is super quick. You just go to the front and say your name. They can also bring it out to your car but it might take a little longer. There's a lot of parking in the back which was such a relief. I'll definitely be back to try out more soon!

Yelp
Breadshop is my go-to place for fresh bread. During the pandemic a lot of my friends were baking and they got me baking as well but bread was one of those things where I did not do well at. I leave the bread baking to the experts here at Breadshop in Kaimuki. My go to item is the flatbread. It's a giant disc and I slice it down, toast it, and enjoy it with a little bit of butter. It's great for breakfast and also for snacking. The breads and pastries are pricey but it's baked fresh each day and they use quality ingredients. During the pandemic, they converted to online ordering and it is still online ordering only now. I recommend ordering 1-2 days in advance but some items like the brioche; very popular, you should order 1 week in advance. Sometimes, they add last minute items and they'll post about it on instagram, @breadshophnl. The pick-up process is easy, you walk to the shop entrance during your pickup time and the staff will grab your item(s). They have a parking lot in the back of the building so you won't have to look for parking on the street.

Yelp
There back! With them, the incredible pleasure of grabbing the fresh bread with both hands, feeling it's hard, crisp crust, smelling it's heavenly aroma, then ripping it in half. Hearing the crisp crust crack and crumble and the swoosh sound of the moist glutinous interior as it's torn asunder. Four general categories of breads on offer, naturally leavened sourdough, commercially leavened flat breads, brioche, and pastries. The standouts are the naturally leavened breads. All with a pleasing sourdough taste, thick crisp crust, moist and toothsome interior variants based on the mixture of different types of four. "Country" with its earthier aroma and nuttier taste from a higher amount of whole wheat flour emphasizes the sourdough flavor. The outstanding "Brown Butter Oat" takes the nuttiness further with the addition of oat flour and browned butter to the "Country" bread. Both outstanding with a charcuterie and cheese platter. The "Sesame Semolina" with it's incredible aroma of toasted sesame seeds pairs surprisingly well with salads and pastas. The "Caraway Rye" a slicing bread that makes for perfect pastrami or corned beef sammies. IMPORTANT: ONLINE ORDERS ONLY. NO WALK-UP CUSTOMERS. 1. Visit their website. 2. Find a reservation time (pickup time). 3. Place and pay for your order (Powered by Tock). $1 automatic service fee. 4. Arrive at your reservation time to pickup (curbside pickup available). *All breads are available baked fresh that day. Prices remain high but when you're the best and only... Naked, with some butter, EVOO, as a mop for some pasta sauces, panzanella or ribollita, any way you slice it (or tear it), this is good eats.

Yelp
Quality baked products here. I mean top notch. Be prepared to also pay top notch prices. But quality always costs a little more. I ordered the mix box of 4 pastries and really enjoyed each one. We will definitely be back to sample more of their offerings.

Yelp
I buy bread here every week. It's the best on island in my opinion, Order via the Tock App and make sure you make your selections when they release their availability on Tuesdays, because they do sell out!

Yelp
1/8/2021 One word. WOWWW This is my first 5 star review and here's why: -Quality: I ordered the 5 pastries box and I enjoyed every single one of them! (We cut up each pastry into fours lol) The flavors bursted from each one. There's definitely a variety of sweet and savory to satisfy anyone's tastes. My favorite was the Taegu/Spinach/Manchego. All the flavors went well together. -Customer service: you have to place your order online. Keep in mind they're only open 4 days a week and you must reserve a time slot to pick up and their items are limited so be sure to check immediately when they open the ordering window. It's very easy to order online. I arrived a few minutes before my pick up time and was immediately greeted when I walked up to the counter. My brioche just came out of the oven so I only waited 5 minutes for them to wrap and bag my orders. -Other: parking was convenient since they share a private lot with Finance Factors and The Curb. There's also street parking if needed. I drove all the way from the west to get these breads. So I definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
Update!! Breadshop is open during the two week lockdown. Just call them and see what their ordering process is for pickup:) Hawaii has regressed to the restrictions that were placed in mid March. I pray that it gets better, so small local businesses don't continue to suffer financially. I pray they come out stronger from the many shutdowns. Since, I didn't live too far from breadshop, I was able to purchase an olive loaf. This was before the phase of placing orders and pickup. Breadshop only makes a few on certain days, so its imperative to check their website or call them in advance for availability. They also make exquisite pastries that reminds me of the Eric Kayser shop in NY. Their olive loaf is over a foot long, thick, embedded with green olives, crackling crust all around, rustic, and savory with briny flavor. This bread is divine when you heat it up for a few minutes in the oven with a side of good quality olive oil. I highly recommend Breadshop!! Check them out once they open up again! Support local always!!

Yelp
I have followed Chris Sy and his baked treats for years. I am slightly obsessed with his croissants and recall making a few treks over to a random weekend popup at the JABSOM med school cafeteria many years ago. Have you ever read interviews with him? There's something super awesome about his seriousness and intensity. I don't know, somehow it makes his baked goods taste better. Sadly, COVID is challenging businesses everywhere but for the consumer it has led to some amazing innovations. Breadshop is now taking orders via the Tock website! Log on, make your selections from the whole menu (!) prepay, and pop on over to the bakery's back parking lot for delivery right to your trunk. Pro tip: check multiple day/time slots to compare the selection. Not everything is baked every day and items do rotate in and out. It's cool to be able to know what they will be offering. Everything is good but I especially love the "plain" croissant and the crusty Town loaf. Neither is done well anywhere in Hawaii, if you ask me. I just don't think that anyone has invested time to figure out how to account for the humidity and climate when baking here. I can imagine Sy being like The Food Lab guy -- baking up batch after batch of the same product until he got it right. Recently, I also ordered the five piece pastry box -- letting the bakery decide what five treats I would receive. All delicious, including a couple of things that I'd probably not have ordered on my own but which I now also love. This stuff is not cheap but it's the best. No point wasting your time on lousy bread. If you buy the good rice, then you're the kind of person who should buy good bread too. Enjoy!
