Sotheby’s Breuer

The iconic Whitney Museum by Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) in its latest reincarnation as Sotheby's new New York headquarters, brilliantly restored by Herzog and de Meuron. Everything you love about the building, such as the "mote and drawbridge" outside, the ceiling in the lobby, the staircase built for eternity, and the great galleries with windows offering intriguing views of neighboring buildings, are still there. Sotheby's exhibitions at the opening were unbeatable but there are always interesting exhibitions (such as the current Old Master exhibitions) and entrance is free of course. A must see space in New York City!

Sotheby’s Breuer heralds a #newera that begins in 2026. The bespoke auction house founded 281 years ago has shown us all a path to permanence in the five boroughs by becoming the owner of the Breuer, a historical landmark of beautiful brutalism by architect Marcel Breuer, whose legacy Herzog & DeMeuron gracefully reinterpreted as a purpose-built showcase for clients to bid. Of broader significance to us is its pioneering of “Palaces for the People”, a contemporary monograph by Eric Klinenberg (please check out the subtitle and table of contents at the very least). It’s nice to be invited. Got in the first weekend opened. Magnificent! New favorite place to take guests from out of town. Fantastic to dream about pieces I would acquire if only I had a spare $10M or $100K. Then you get to see what the pieces actually fetch. This is a wonderful view into the art world that [formerly] only few will see.

Great space, unique brutality architecture.

The website states the exhibition hours and dates for each catalog, when we get here they say it’s actually closed. People keep coming to the door and getting rejected. what a joke.

It was an unusual experience for me to visit this building, not as a museum, but as a Sotheby's Global Headquarters, but it's still a magnificent brutalist building by Marcel Breuer. The finishes and materials have been kept intact, but it has been adapted for their use. I looked for the "Dwellings" and found at least one. Grateful that it wasn't removed. The attention to lighting is par excellence. You can visit for free and see the auction items on display. It may be your last chance to see many of the paintings they are auctioning. Check their schedule. Everyone was friendly and welcoming.
