Beat the Heat With These Outstanding Hawaiian Shave Ice Shops in LA | Eater LA

"If Los Angeles had a trademark shave ice shop, it would be Brian’s, with locations in Venice, West LA, Tarzana, and Sherman Oaks. Can’t decide what to order? Get the rainbow, a Hawai’i classic that comes drizzled in condensed milk along with strawberry, banana, and Blue Hawaii syrup. Or, for those in a silly mood, try the “Hanabata,” which roughly translates to “booger” in Hawaiian pidgin. It’s a lime-green concoction that’s packed with Melona and pistachio syrup, paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream from Fosselman’s." - Kat Hong

5 Spots For Hawaiian Shave Ice In LA

"With locations in Sherman Oaks, Tarzana, and West LA, Brian’s is a solid, reliable choice whenever the heat becomes unbearable and your landlord “keeps forgetting” to fix your AC unit. There are a ton of classic flavors to try here, but stick to their more creative ones - “Tiger’s Blood,” which is a mix of watermelon, strawberry, and coconut, is unique and creamy, and pairs particularly well with a drizzle of condensed milk. Or their POG (passionfruit, orange, guava) flavor, which is tart, light, and refreshing - and tastes just like the little juice cups they hand out on flights in Hawai’i." - kat hong

Oh my god — everything is so delicious! I absolutely love coming to Brian's Shave Ice & Boba in LA, especially for their shaved ice and drinks. I visit often with my friends, and recently, the menu was refreshed — and it's even better than before! The friendly service and sweet flavors always lift my mood whenever I stop by. Whether you're looking for a light meal, a refreshing drink, or a simple dessert, this is the perfect spot to recharge. As a fan of Korean kimbap, I especially enjoy grabbing a roll with a drink — it's the perfect little treat to brighten my day!

Google
Iconic, timeless little place with random little Time Machine valley vibe that I’m really into. The shaved ice is so yummy, so light and cold and perfect. You can eat it forever and never get full or fat or bored. We love it

Google
Absolutely love this place! The staff is super friendly and welcoming. 🫶🏻😵They have a huge variety of bingsu with different flavors and beautiful presentations. I ordered one of their signature drinks — not only did it look Instagram-worthy, but it also tasted amazing. The place has such a fun, colorful vibe that makes you feel like you’re on a little vacation. There are so many options that I can’t wait to come back and try more. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a fun spot to hang out and enjoy some delicious desserts.🩷🩷

Google
This place is a rip off. I went in and ordered a small ice cream (single scoop). On the menu the price for a single scoop of ice cream was $5.25 and for a double priced at $6.25. Once they ring me up they charged me $6.50. This amount is even higher than a double scoop. I was helped by Gigi and I requested to speak to a manager. She informed that the manager’s name was Andrew. Once I requested to speak to him she said that he was busy and couldn’t speak to me. I ended up paying $6.50 for a single scoop instead of $5.25 as listed. This is a bad way to do business.

I visited this location with my friend and ordered a pistachio and cookie & cream drink. Employees are very friendly and drinks were so good!

Google
The only shave ice place in the valley that I found and is very good. I was in the area and knew afterwards I wanted to come here for dessert with my wife. The parking situation where this place is at can be a problem especially during the night time. I was able to find a spot and ready to eat my shave ice. I got the regular size shave ice and the 3 flavors I got were the Grape, Green Apple and Hawaiian Punch. My wife got her Thai Tea and she was very happy with it. I loved my shave ice, you get a decent size but it is kind of pricey ... the kiddie size is only a buck cheaper. I ate my shave ice inside the store and my wife saw the promo about the pumpkin spice ice tea so she decided to try that as well. After she paid and was waiting for it, the male worker said they were out and if she wanted something else so she ask for a large Thai tea. Also keep in mind that there also a extra fee for using credit card.

Google
Today was my first time coming to this location. It definitely exceeded my expectations with friendly employee's and a great atmosphere. The Boba was delicious and so was there shaved ice with the most kind general manager Jane.

Google
Great atmosphere, great staff, great drinks and shaved ice. This place has been a great experience overall not only with the drinks and shaved ice but also the atmosphere of the place itself. The boba is scrumdiddlyumptious and the shaved ice is absolutely delectable. RECOMMEND!

Yelp
Been here a dozen times now. Love it. They have sped up the process from last year in service. Always delicious. She loves the shaved ice with Tigers Blood, Blue Raspberry, Hawaiian Punch! Topped off with snow cap. For an extra special treat today after Jujitsu she got a Taiyaki filled with Nutella and it came out fresh and warm.
google avatar

Yelp
Perfect spot on a hot day. I was very happy with their shaved ice. I ordered mine with only a mango syrup, however, you can choose a filling and topping as well for $7. My size was the medium and it was huge! Their boba was yummy too. Staff were friendly and helpful, I'd definitely return when craving a cold treat.

Yelp
Rude service. Unfriendly young girl was rude to my kids ordering. Seemed overall aggravated to deal with us. Out of items advertises like soft serve ice cream On The teriyaki. Didn't let us know they were out of soft serve

Maya D.

Yelp
Shaved ice was great but the service appeared to lack heavily . The young lady in the front was very rude and didn't have a welcoming tone . I was very polite as it was my first time here and she said absolutely nothing even after I finished ordering . I said thank you and she gave me the biggest side eye for some reason . I will sadly not be back bc of my experience but yummy shaved ice .

Yelp
I loved what I ordered, Guave and Melona with mochis and condensed milk. The mochis weren't chewy because they were at the bottom of the bowl. My partner ordered a regular bowl of Matcha, Melona and Mango and it tasted like an air freshener. Big serving for a regular size, definitely shareable. I wish they have more mixed flavors options on their menu if one doesn't feel like creating one.

Yelp
We've been coming here for about a year and it has been great... recently I learned that management had changed and soon after started noticing some small changes. We went recently and they changed the "kiddie" size to way smaller than before and the price stayed the exact same even though it feels like I'm getting HALF LESS than what I normally get. Normally when we take shaved ice to go, we still get about the same amount as when we don't, this last time we went the "kiddie" was barely half filled! I've never been disappointed coming here but this last time I did... It honestly just feels like a rip off now with how little we get. Yes it's "only" $6 but when I'm getting more than one shaved ice it adds up.

Moris Alexander O.

Yelp
I love this place. But aww man I drove like 30 minutes to get shave ice and they are closed it's 9:16pm they supposed to close at 10 but it's close Wao can you update the hours.
google avatar

Mayco L.

Yelp
You know, I wanted to come here and gave 3 stars. But after looking at all their shaved ice's yelp photos and menu, I realized that the employee "missed" the opportunity to help me complete my shaved ice order. Found this place accidentally after we had an amazing meal at the Thai restaurant across the strip mall. The moment I went in, I was greeted and I right away let them know that it was my first time and I need guidance in ordering. I even asked what are the top 2 that people come here and ordered. Instead of start guiding me through the menu, they let me read the menu myself and just stared at me. Made me feel more pressured to order. So my daughter came up with shaved ice - bubblegum - strawberry. She right away charged me and gave us bubblegum shaved ice with strawberry ice cream filling. She missed the opportunity to ask what kind of topping, etc. if I knew, I'd add some toppings and definitely willing to pay extra to make the shaved ice taste better, rather than just shaved ice + weak syrup.

Yelp
Perfect shaved ice for the summer! This helped cool us down from a hot day. They also have boba, but I've personally never tried it. The shaved ice has good flavor, and they have several flavors to choose from! Customer service is quick, and the spot is cute and casual.

Ai L.

Yelp
The ice cream was okay, the taiyaki was falsely advertised. It came in a bowl with a taiyaki on the side. The taiyaki was raw in the middle.

Yelp
My son's first time visiting Brian's husband and I use to come here for dates. Love the atmosphere great customer service and desserts are delicious.

Yelp
I purchased my very first condo here in Sherman Oaks and was shopping/donating goods at the cancer society across the street, spotted Brian's boba across the street and drove over. I ordered the classic hot milk tea boba. It arrived exactly as expected and not too overwhelmed by sugar. Perfect, on a cold winter's day. I'm still exploring the area, so wandering around is fun. The menu is very extensive to a point where it's confusing, that's the only glitch otherwise parking is easy, service is friendly, there are fun games, and my boba tea was awesome! Thanks guys.
google avatar

Brandi G.

Yelp
Incorrect hours posted on yelp and I drove over based on this. It appears they were recently updated too so not sure what has gone wrong here but you should correct so more people don't waste their time.
google avatar

Kayla P.

Yelp
I ordered a large milk tea with boba and the first sip was great because you get the warm boba but the milk tea itself was watered down. Service was good but not the fastest. The shop looked nice and clean.
google avatar

Brooke L.

Yelp
Love love love the food here, especially the shaved ice. The only downside is how expensive it is.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
I really debated making this review as I hate to hurt a small business, but after putting some thought into it, I have to say, quality control just isn't there. My friend and I ordered a Thai iced tea and a milk tea. We also asked for EXTRA boba. Once we were driving away, we took a sip and realized the boba wasn't made properly. It was very hard. I was unable to chew through any of them - unless I felt like biting into boba but that's not the purpose or texture they should be. Often times, if I visit a boba shop and the texture is a bit off I won't complain. I will suck it up, drink my tea, and eat the boba balls. This is the only tea I've ever had that I was unable to finish. Quality control is clearly lacking & I'm kind of shocked that this is what was served to us. Please work on this.. /: there are so many boba shops to try.

Yelp
I love this place. We would come here after our meetings and the shaved ice was really good. I liked their boba as well but their shaved ice flavors were delicious!

Christina R.

Yelp
Came by today with my friends during lunch time and Jane the general manager was SO SWEET! They added new items to their menus and we just had to try. We got the strawberry and cream with vanilla ice cream, the shaved ice with mixed fruit and vanilla ice cream and the Orea one! Everything was very good! Can't wait to return and try new items!

Kimberly E.

Yelp
Found this place, unexpectedly while I was looking for raspados... although they do not have raspados, shaved ice sounded pretty good. Upon arrival while browsing through their menu I saw blue vanilla which originally comes from Hawaii. I have not been able to find any location in California with shaved ice or drinks similar to Hawaii. Although I was very excited to try it out, I didn't want to get him hopes up in case it didn't taste the same. IT WAS THE SAME, it tasted amazing, brings back so many memories. BEST SHAVED ICE in Cali, LA , 818 Valley . Along with some amazing customer service, the 2 lady there were very chill, friendly, and helpful. The ambiance inside was bright, joyful, and beach vibes. I wanted to take some shaved ice to my sister since we have been craving it for years now, which we do live 40 minutes away from the location, although we thought it most likely would not make it. We ended up trying either way the workers were very nice and packaged it amazing, along with they added ice to a bag to help keep it cold. SURPRISE IT DID MAKE IT !!! Will definitely be coming back bringing friends and families
google avatar

Cosmo M.

Yelp
Website has inaccurate prices. On their website, they listed kid size as $4.50. We headed over with our three kids because it would be less expensive than going to Menchie's. We get there and the kids size is listed as seven dollars. So instead of a $15 trip, it's now a $21 trip. Will not be back

Yelp
Picture a sunny, warm day laying out in Malibu beach and catching some waves. After a fun tanning session, with saltwater in your hair, you crave something cold, sweet and refreshing. Suddenly, you remember the joy Hawaiian shave ice brought you so you search for something similar on Yelp. And boom, you land on Brian's Shave Ice! SO SO good!! I can't Recommend their shave ice enough! It was so darn good I almost licked the bowl clean, just kidding I did lol! This location definitely does not scan out on the toppings either. I got my favorite three flavors, Tiger's blood, mango, and lychee, topped with lots of conversed milk!! Talk about sugar overload but worth every bite!! If you're craving authentic Hawaiian shave ice but can't afford the plane ticket, this Brian's Shave Ice is the place to go! I haven't tried their boba yet but it looked pretty good when I saw others ordering it. 10/10 this is the place to go for dessert!
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Has great sizes and many choices. Personally I love the flavors Tiger blood, blue Hawaii, and coconut with snow cap on top. Overall it's a AMAZING place to get Boba + Shaved Ice.
google avatar

Luis G.

Yelp
Got there at 9:30pm and the girl was locking up the door. You should update your time instead of making customers waste their gas and time.

Jon L.

Yelp
Amazing slushies and Taiyaki. Order all the flavors, especially the Mochi. Strongly recommend all the yummy treats. You'll enjoy the Hawaiian flavors and the snacks they have to offer here
google avatar

Yelp
Hadn't been to this location yet, but I love Brian's Shave Ice. Authentic Hawaiian style. This was a really nice spot. The staff were friendly and of course the shave ice was excellent.

Michelle C.

Yelp
I love going to Brian's Shave Ice & Boba. I'm addicted to the Melona shave ice with snowcap. The food is great and the employees are amazing. They all know what I order when I walk in and everyone is so nice. Brian's is under new management and the new manager Jane is so sweet. Love her!

Cameron K.

Yelp
Jane is the best GM! The service was very welcoming such a lovely and awesome vibe at this spot. If you are in the mood for something sweet visit Brian's Shaved Ice.

Yelp
I have come to brians twice so far, the first time was great I got a shaved ice it tastes good like how I get it in Hawaii. I came again on a saturday night and brought my family. This time I noticed they had the Taiyaki on the menu and I always get Taiyaki when in little Tokyo. I got the Taiyaki with double scoop ice cream. The Taiyaki was really good, I got it filled with nutella. The ice cream was good as well. Service wise, staff is ok. I noticed the cashier had a little attitude toward the woman in front of us and that turned us off. Location wise, the parking is horrible. On a busy day/night, good luck finding parking. Overall, I say definitely give brians a try, the Shaved Iced is the real star here. So if you're craving shaved iced, check it out here.
google avatar

Kandi B.

Yelp
Pissed!!!! The parking lot SUCKS which isn't the business' fault. I don't come here often because of the parking. It's been about a year since I last came. And both times the dole soft serve wasn't/isn't working. If you have ever dealt with a pregnant woman's cravings then you know how REAL they are. I couldn't even get Vanilla because that wasn't working either! I am so upset I could cry lol.
google avatar

Asha C.

Yelp
The staff is very friendly and courteous. Prompt service! Great flavors and options! Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Tirzah R.

Yelp
Great treats, especially during a hot summer. I love that they have macadamia ice cream!
google avatar

Spencer K.

Yelp
Real Hawaiian shaved ice & the vanilla ice cream is top tier. This is a go to spot on any hot day
google avatar

JJ K.

Yelp
My partner and I not only dream of this shaved ice but find it drool worthy and satisfying any time of day!! We have been many times and have enjoyed countless variations of their shaved ice flavors. The ice cream addition is beyond perfection - hand made by a local mom and pop shop. It's the kind of ice cream where you can taste every bit of effort and love that went into making it. They have multiple other options and toppings to make this dessert to your liking. We love the Mochi! The staff are so friendly, helpful, and have great attitudes! We always feel welcomed by them and bond over weird flavors for the shaved ice! There is a new flavor every month! This location also has many other items such as boba and takiyaki! (I think that's what it's called!) A must go to!!! And if you need some food before your dessert (or afte - the plaza has many amazing food spots within walking distance!
google avatar

Elle S.

Yelp
I used to love this place! Last time I went, something wasn't right with the boba; it tasted stale, so I went back for a replacement, and the second wasn't much better. Tonight I tried it again and even though the place was packed, it tasted wrong again. Like slimy and gooey. Update, tried one more time (it's a convenient place!) and it was fine. There's a rude guy who works there but if you ignore him it should be fine
google avatar

Tiffani T.

Yelp
I really do love Brian's Shaved Ice as it is the best in the valley but they need to do a better job at having management answering the phones and updating their operation hours. I tried calling & no answer so then I checked google maps, yelp, and online all said they close at 11pm. I was debating to risk it since the drive is 35 min away but I really was craving. Once we got there around 10:05 I saw that the open sign was off and no customers were to be seen inside. I really am upset as the drive was pretty far and we wasted all that gas and our time for nothing.

Wyatt W.

Yelp
I've been going to this place for about a year and it's amazing! All the workers are young, so when I first decided to try it I was a little skeptical but I have never once been disappointed. Their Taro Milk Tea is very good, and honestly one of the best i've tried and I consider myself a boba connoisseur. I don't usually get shave ice but when I do it's always amazing. The ice is soft and the flavor goes through the whole thing, the condensed milk is my favorite part. If you guys have a chance to check it out be sure to ask for the owner, John. Super nice guy and always makes sure to give the customer exactly what they want. Honestly this place wouldn't be as good if he weren't there. Great business I recommend if you're in the Sherman Oaks area!! (Also great for young ones they have an arcade game inside that keeps kids entertained while waiting for their order!)

Yelp
A MUST DO 4 & 1/3 STARS! There is Nothing better on a hot day or night than a Frozen Icy Treat. Brian's Shave Ice fits your need for a Dessert to Cool you off. There is Free Parking here but sometimes it's a bit challenging because the shop shares a parking lot with other eateries & businesses. This is a little hot spot in Sherman Oaks. Brian's Shave Ice has Indoor & Outdoor Dining Tables & Chairs. It is a small shop that offers a variety of Desserts. Their Shave Ice is their most popular item & brings a Taste of Hawaii & the Islands to LA. You can order the Shave Ice with or without Ice Cream. The Menu above tells you the whole process of choosing & your flavor selections. They also have a chalkboard if you've never been here with some Employee Recommendations which makes it a whole lot easier for Newbies. They also have Dole Soft Serve, a Boba Menu, Specialty Drinks, Slush, Fruit Flavor Teas, & TAYAKI Ice Cream. So this place can satisfy lots of different people's flavor palates. Brian's Shave Ice now has multiple locations so check around for the closest one to you. I got the Shave Ice with Blue Hawaii, Mango, & Coconut & Snow Capped on top. Their Shave Ice is Really Good! It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Christian O.

Yelp
The kids that work here always have a bad attitude and literally do anything to get out of making the taiyaki. I get it's a more involved process but then I recommend taking it off the menu. This past time I ordered one much to the dismay of the girl working and when I received it there was no filling ( I ordered peanut butter and jelly). The shaved ice is great but again the attitude of staff and inconsistency make this a 2 star unfortunately

James O.

Yelp
Love the shaved ice from this spot but it's happened multiple times where I arrive before closing time specifically today around 10:13 and staff was already closed down shop for cleaning. Posted hours online are 11pm. Would be nice to know accurate closing times before driving 20min.
google avatar

Niki M.

Yelp
We went here hoping for actual "shave" ice, not snow cones. This met our wish for soft Hawaiian style ice. Good selection of flavors. I wish they had smaller sizes. The menu lists a "little kiddie," but they don't actually have that. The "kiddie" is huge. We should have shared. Now I know better.
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
So I am looking to waste some time while my car was being worked on. It's humid and high 80's outside and I see the sign, Shaved Ice, perfect. So I decide to see if they have real shaved ice. Recently I got a "shaved ice" at an ice cream shop and was really a snow cone. Shaved ice is fluffier. Bingo I see the machine and it is a shaver. Next I look at the ingredients , wow what a selection. (The ice cream shop did not have azuki beans or condensed milk.) I walked there but it looked like the parking was full. My wait wasn't bad, maybe 5 minutes, with a steady stream of customers. There was a shave ice place by csun but it closed, it'd be nice if they opened a Brian's there.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
A great treat on a hot day! I will say, even the smallest Kiddie size is HUGE. If you are getting your own I recommend the smaller "kids" size that is a size smaller than the Kiddie size. I could barely finish. They have an excellent selection of drinks, shave ice flavors, and even ice cream. Will be coming back for sure!
google avatar

Jay P.

Yelp
Great service, great shave ice (with the snow cap of course) and friendly people. We had been looking for a place that does the Hawaiian style shave ice and Brian's is it. The product is delicious and plentiful and lots of flavors to choose from. Well worth the visit and a fun place to grab desert !

Coree V.

Yelp
It was so amazing! It's HUGE so many flavors! The owner is a wonderful man Will be back for more and the yummy fish!
google avatar

Reta B.

Yelp
I think this place is just okay. I love boba so trying new boba places is something I really like to do. This one I stumbled upon through Yelp and figured why not that have good reviews so let's give it a try. I had their mango milk tea 75% sweetness but still was sweet. I have had a lot better. It didn't really taste like mango milk tea. They did have a Yelp offer that they didn't honor even though they have it when you check in.

Sophia M.

Yelp
the state of this place is kind of sad considering I used to go here all the time in high school and loved it. no music, boring walls with all the pictures removed, and to top it off, the shave ice was basically water and food coloring with absolutely zero flavor. was thoroughly disappointed, won't be back. the only positive part of my experience was the nice girl taking my order (reason I have 2 stars instead of 1)!

Ursula M.

Yelp
Perfection! The shaved ice here is the closest thing to the Hawaiian version. The ice is so fluffy and their topping are amazing! The place is usually busy but they are quick to get the line moving. It is a small location but very clean and big enough to grab your treat to go or eat it at one of the tables.
google avatar

Anissa S.

Yelp
Pretty good, once you muddle through the crazy menu without any help from the people who work there. The shave ice situation is weird. The menu assumes you'll want to put ice cream or other treat in the middle of your shave ice. You can get a simple shave ice but you need to ask for it. For the boba - that menu is crazzzzzy and makes no sense whatsoever. Just ask for explicitly what you want and you'll be ok. If not, you'll get some sort of drink artificially sweetened with the flavor you choose and a non dairy creamer. Yuck. It's kind of dark inside but outside is just two tiny tables in the sun that needed to be cleaned. A lot to be desired here.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
My kids loved this place! With the weather getting warmer...this was the perfect place to go to. The shaved ice was great. (There's really no way to mess this up.) Only issue was, that, there's no dine in. Outdoor seating is limited. It get super hot in the afternoon. Plan to drive out after your purchase.
