The Best Restaurants in Portland’s Woodstock Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Outside of the Midwest, Chicago is best known for a pizza so deep it needs a lifeguard; locals often prefer a thin, crispy, square-cut tavern style that is Bridge City’s specialty. Nevertheless, Bridge City is more than just a pizzeria, serving a knockout Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich — thinly-sliced beef on a French roll under a pile of sweet peppers, served with au jus. Another under-the-radar hit: The shop’s super gooey mozzarella sticks are made in-house, as opposed to landing in a fryer out of a freezer bag." - Nathan Williams

We picked up some pizza for dinner and it was great. I made a custom with sausage and meat balls with jalapeno, mushroom and onions. Overall the taste was pretty good and we enjoyed the pizza. The crust was well cooked and the portions for topping were great. They served it in a paper bag which was something different but otherwise it was great.

Google
While the business itself is a bit of a tight squeeze on the inside, the food itself has big flavor! Good selection of toppings, too! I loved the 10” pizza I ordered, and if I’m craving pizza again, I’ll know where to get it!

Google
Great Chicago tavern style pizza! I'm originally from Chicago and think this is very close to what you can find in Chicago. It's my go-to when I want a taste from home. Don't miss out on their Italian beef sandwich either, it's legit!

Michael Key

Google
I was looking forward to trying Bridge City because it was recommended by foodie, Bill Oakley as his favorite Chicago style pizza. We thought it was mediocre and rattle off almost a dozen pizza joints that are better. I don't get how this is supposed to be Chicago style. It's nothing like pizza I've had in the windy city. FYI: It's a take out only place. Check out my profile for more great eateries and cocktail bars.

Google
I've only had the meatball sub (Cicero). It's delish. The meatballs are large the sauce is perfection. It's not as common to find these here as on the east coast (PA/NJ/NY) so I'm very grateful to have this place close by!

Google
Excellent pizza with generous toppings. They also have athletic Chicago Italian beef, which I can't wait to go back and try. It is not really a dine-in place, but they do have a counter which we ate at. Prices are very reasonable. A 14 inch deluxe veggie with lots of cheese was only 30 dollars.

Google
I've tried all the Italian beef sandwiches in Portland and Bridge City has my #1 favorite. The beef is tender, but has a little chew. The joos is peppery in that way it is supposed to be. The peppers, both sweet & hot, were excellently made and presented. I like that they charge extra for cheese, because this practice should be discouraged. Cheese does not go on Italian beef. I will fight you. I would be happy with this sandwich if I got it in the neighborhood I grew up in on the south side of Chicago. I look forward to getting their pizza. I doubt I will have to tell them how to cut it like all the other trash pizza places we've suffered with on the west coast. I also like that they support their local little league. Chatting with the owner, he's actually from Chicago too. Unlike the rest of the chumps selling "Chicago" food in this town.

Google
Great team! Always the best. Fresh, tasty & top of the world pizza! Great job. See ya around in the world, mister Joe. Highly recommend. Just order, be patient and pick up. Perfect - G

Yelp
Perfect pepperoni, mushroom, sausage pie this evening. Attentive staff and great pizza. Walk over and get a pie soon!!!!

Yelp
The sandwich combo with sausage and beef dip was unbelievable, it was so good! The pizza came out piping hot. The meats were all vey high quality and delicious. I drove 40 minutes to check it out and it was definitely worth it. Nice people as well.

Yelp
Our pizza was excellent. The crust was crunchy yet chewy (the right way), the sauce was really tasty and it was cooked perfectly. Not really a fan of their packaging (paper not cardboard) but I'm sure it's more eco-friendly. The price are not too high, everything's expensive these days. To finish, the service is great. It eont be long before we go back. p.s. we had half and half.... sausage/black olive/peperoncini and spinach/jalapeño/fresh tomatoes. We will repeat this one!!

Amber L.

Yelp
Was super excited to try this place out - but left pretty disappointed. Pizza is unremarkable. Crust is bland, sauce is mid. Pepperoni was lower quality. Would be fine if it were cheap, but at 29 menu price - can't justify it. Add that to the $3 they charged me to make it a half pep half cheese? Not charged for the pep, that was $2 - I was simply charged because it was half/half.

Yelp
I was torn between 3 and 4 stars. I called my order in and waited the 45 minutes I was quoted. When I got there they told me my pizza needed to be remade because it had burnt to the pizza stone. It took another 45 minutes before my pizza was ready. They did throw in a free order of mozzarella sticks and the employees seemed genuinely sorry. The pizza was huge and pretty good but I won't wait over an hour again.

Yelp
I don't know what's in the ranch dressing but it's phenomenal. Pizza is my favorite in Portland!
google avatar

Jesse J.

Yelp
We had it delivered through an app. The menu on the app was a bit tough. That is my complaint . We had to go online to figure it out. The pizza was really good. I love the diamond cut! Would highly recommend it to pizza lovers.

Yelp
I just had the most delicious meatball sub. I think I've had since I moved away from the East Coast. It was so damn delicious! Thank you Bridge city pizza for doing the meatball subs, right. Their pizza is yummy as well, but this is my first time I've had a meatball sub there

Daniela M.

Yelp
Bomb big mozzarella with lots of cheese and good marinara sauce. Fast and quick service.

Daniel M.

Yelp
Excellent pizza. 10/10. Would recommend to a friend. It's the ONLY spot in Portland that knows how to make sausage for a pizza. It's not crumbled Italian sausage, it's big chunks just like n the Midwest. A 14" pie satiates two full grown adults and you get more pizza because 25% of the pizza isn't crust. Go now!

Justin L.

Yelp
This is one of our neighborhood pizza joints and we feel quite lucky they are. Chicago tavern style pizza done really well. The sandwiches are great when you are in the mood for that kind of thing and my kids love their cheese curds. I've met who I believe to be one of the owners and he is always very professional and nice.

Yelp
It would be great if: 1. The people answering your phones to take orders didn't sound like they could careless about the business coming in. 2. The people delivering your food could make sure that there are napkins and utensils to eat said food ordered. As soon as we paid the delivery chick and made sure to give the proper 20% tip she turned around immediately and just left - no "thank you" or "have a great night". She seemed very annoyed with having to deliver our food to us. Unfortunately this is our 3rd time ordering from you all when over at Proper Pint and with the bad service we've gotten this time and our last time (took 50 min to bring our pizza over to us) we are done supporting your business.

Yelp
Was working late nearby and decided to get some pizza for my crew, it was really good and I love how they slice it, not the normal triangles.

Yelp
Ordered a 14-inch pizza and an Italian beef sandwich on a weekday night, was told 40 minutes and when we arrived everything was hot and fresh. By the time we got home the Italian beef was a soggy mess, might want to eat it there, as our drive home took a little bit longer as we were behind the good 'ol 75 bus for a few minutes. The giardiniera hot peppers were a delight and crisp, I asked for them on the side. I would buy a jar of these peppers if they sold them. The beef was fresh and flavorful with a savory side of plentiful au jus. Definitely has the Windy city/midwest vibes, bringing you back to the midwest dive bars, and the hotdog/sando shops that prolifically are in abundance throughout Chicago and the midwest. We had leftovers for lunch the next day, heated the stone in the oven, and enjoyed the crisp crust and gooey cheese. This pizza reheats well on a stone. It's unfortunate that others have had horrible experiences.

Yelp
When you buy a Bridge City Pizza through Uber Eats and cancel 3 minutes later they charge you the FULL price and keep your pizza.

Steven L.

Yelp
Food was spectacular just like Chicago we ordered large thin crust sausage pizza, Italian beefs and a deep dish pizza. The pizza was the best I've ever had outside of Chicago. I highly recommend this place for carry out or dine in they have a few seats where you can enjoy your food.
google avatar

Brock M.

Yelp
While visiting Portland we came across Bridge City Pizza... HANDS DOWN!!! Probably the best pizza we've ever had. As you can see in the picture, the jalapeños were so fresh and so hot!! Just the way we like it. Keep up the good work! Oh and the mozzarella sticks were homemade and so good. Will definitely be back if we visit again.
google avatar

Shaman A.

Yelp
Some of the best Chicago style fare this side of the Loop. John serves both classic Chicago tavern style pizza and also "tourist" style. His Italian Beef is, by far, one of the best I've ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
Went in on a whim for some french fries, yeah okay french fries from a pizza joint but I heard they were good and yes they were hot and old-fashioned like an old burger joint! Also ordered something that caught my interest was a meatball Sunday. One huge meatball with cheese and your choice of two veggie toppings, I chose pineapple and olives. Most of all got to meet the owner Joe. Very down-to-earth friendly wouldn't take a tip leaves for his workers, just overall a nice guy!

Matt D.

Yelp
As close as it gets to Chicago, outside Chicago. Great pizza, and Italian beef combos with gravy... Only gripe is everytime i try and order pizza puffs (that's real Chi-cuisine ) THEY OUT Love this place
google avatar

Zack M.

Yelp
My second favorite pizza of all time! They don't skimp on toppings or cheese. Friendly service

J R.

Yelp
Ordered a mushroom pizza. I feel certain the mushrooms came out of a can, I was shocked. This place has been getting great reviews. I wish I could say good things but the pizza was inedible. I spent alot on it and haven't gone back
google avatar

Sunshine M.

Yelp
Double Meh. I would drive to Baby Doll next time. Crew was nice, pizza was okay. I got two and as much as I liked not getting rid of a box, my bottom pizza was a little squished with the bags. Packaging doesn't travel well. Since you are takeout only pizza you need to mail the packaging.

Yelp
I've previously ordered from them and they're average, at best. Last time I ordered two combos with no giardiniara or peppers and they still loaded it up so I ended up throwing the sandwiches away. Decided to try it again tonight and placed an order for pizza, sandwiches, sodas and breadsticks, leaving the same note in the Uber Eats app asking for the sandwiches to not have peppers or giardiniara. They decided that instead of fulfilling that one request on an $80 order they'd just cancel it. No phone call or text or note or anything. I only found out when I checked the status an hour later and it showed that the order was canceled. Again, the food is nothing to write home about so maybe I dodged an $80 bullet by not getting a lukewarm sack of mediocrity. Still, it'd be nice to get some kind of notice that they've found a new way to disappoint. It's really too bad, they're so much closer than Michaels that I wanted to give them an honest chance to wow me. Oh well, Michael's is WAY better anyways.
google avatar

Francisco S.

Yelp
They proved good a Chicago style thin crust pie! My family and I are from Chicago and order pizza from Bridge City pizza whenever we want to satisfy our Chicago pizza craving.
google avatar

Jovan D.

Yelp
I came for the pizza, but I'll be back for the cheese curds! Biggest mozzarella sticks I've come across and I loved them. The appetizers were dropped into the fryer while I waited for the pizza- So fresh! We'll be coming back for the burgers next time too.
google avatar

Brendon K.

Yelp
Fuck you postmates...and fuck you Bridge City for partnering with Postmates. I live within a mile of your location, and I have to wait an HOUR?? I tried to cancel, but Postmates told me I'd lose my money...so move your ass. If you show up to my house with a plain pizza again Ok, the initial review was about delivery time. Perhaps a bit out of Bridge City's control. However, if you partner with a slow service, you do so at your peril. Once the pizza arrived, it was great as usual.

Yelp
Love love love Bridge City Pizza! Terrific pies, astonishingly delicious sandwiches! Takes a while, and it's so worth the wait.
google avatar

Benjamin T.

Yelp
As a Chicago native, this pizza brings me back home, every time. I've order from Bridge City over 50 times. It's classic tavern style pizza done proper, sweet sauce, extra cheese, baked crispy, square cuts for life! The roast beef is spot on, order it dipped. Order a Pizza puff on the side for fun. My only complaint is sometimes they don't pick up their phone on Sunday mornings at open. Overall super friendly staff, I highly recommend.
google avatar

Joe W.

Yelp
Amazing pizza! Its the "tavern style" thin and square cut pizza that i had as a kid. Love those little corner pieces :-) plus the crust is like almost a pastry or something. Anyhow, not average pizza. Also it comes in a bag.

Yelp
Ordering is difficult d/t no website access/ it was down since 2pm ( I picked up a paper menu for future orders ... to post on the fridge) Also it was 5:30pm on a Monday and they seemed slammed?!!!! Made a verbal order/came to pick up ( delivery was a minimum hour and a half) and they couldn't find my order under my name Found the order... $40 for a large .... Hmmmm Will update ... after we eat.... Upgraded to a 4 ( actually 5+ for the pizza but a minus 1 for the ordering/ delivery hassles) Pizza delicious.... Our order was Big hurt add pineapple/ the large was a substantial pizza/ toppings as usual were very high quality tasty, generous in quantity..,

Yelp
Yesterday we ordered food from Bridge City Pizza to be delivered to the tap room across the street. They have a red phone in the taproom with a direct line to them. Cool idea. We were told 45 minutes for our order. 45 minutes came and went. 60 minutes came and went. We finally decided to just leave cuz it was 45 minutes past our delivery time. As I was closing out taproom tab and getting ready to leave the delivery drive arrives. No "I'm sorry" just it's busy. Our delivery guy was obviously drunk or had been drinking. In fact we believe we saw him in the tap room drinking when we arrived. After we received food the driver was at the bar drinking again. Really?!?!? Food was not half bad but we will not be ordering again. Tap room was wonderful though.

Yelp
Food is good 2/3 of the time. But the real issue is the customer service. 2/3 of the time the person on phone or front desk is awful. 2/3 the person making the pizza is awful. The pick-ups times are always wrong. My wife & I frequented here due to how close it is to us. Had horrible service last night, and saw a worker call another customer a motherf*cker. Told my wife "enjoy this pizza from bridge city because its our last" lol. Theres simply toooo many great places to eat to settle and come here. Apizza Scholls is 10x better. Look them up and thank me later.
google avatar

Kal C.

Yelp
It's Chicago style pizza and the quality is no Bull. Buttery flaking crust that isn't burnt. Cut in squares. Not deep dish. Fresh toppings. The marinara has a zing to it, but it tastes like they just made it. I think what gives it that 5 star oomph is the owner personally saying, "Hey, if anything isn't perfect, please let us know and we'll make sure it is." Where does this happen anymore? I've had 3 pies from Bridge City. All have been superb. I'm not saying I'm picky about my pizza. I have cheap eats pizza places and places I actually crave. Bridge City falls into the second category.

Thomas D.

Yelp
After three visits devouring Chicago Beef Sandwiches, I tried a take home pizza. Just OK. Sticking with the sandwiches. Careful. The hot peppers are really hot. All things considered, this the best Chicago Beef Sandwich in Portland!
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
I get the normal style of pizza from here frequently and it's very very good. I have never been disappointed with it once. However I decided to try the stuffed pizza for a change it was pretty pretty bad. No one in our family enjoyed it and were all incredibly disappointed. This 3 star is a warning to NOT GET THE STUFFED PIZZA because you'll regret it. Go with the normal kind, it's 5 stars!
google avatar

Danny C.

Yelp
We order from these guys monthly because we are local but more importantly because it is one of the best pizzas in Portland. Highly recommend their pies, their crust is on the thin side and crispy which we love.
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying your pizza and I'm sold!!!!!! Thanks so much! You guys gave us free mozzarella sticks and wow! I was going to order them and did not. You read my mind. I'm a pizza freak and snob and now you have a regular customer. Thanks soooooo much!
google avatar

Debbie G.

Yelp
If I could give negative stars I would. Used the 'bat' phone from Proper Pint to order 2 sandwiches and breadsticks. They said 40-45 minutes. A long time for a sandwich, but OK. Once it had been an hour I walked over. Still not done. The dude in the kitchen is putting meat on my husband's sandwich like he's building a piece of art. He puts his (masked) face WAY down by the sandwich like he's smelling the meat--to see if it's still good?!? He takes at least another 7 minutes to finish the sandwich. He turns around. Half his ASS is hanging out of his pants. In a KITCHEN!!! The woman slowly packs up our sandwiches. Then finds out the breadsticks aren't done. Puts the sandwiches in the warmer. When the breadsticks are finally done she packs it up again and I carry it back--an hour and 25 minutes after we ordered. Fairly certain they were all stoned out of their minds.Never again.

Don S.

Yelp
Anxious to try and anxious to really rate. This place may be permanently closed, but I've tried 3 days in a row-nonexistent. I tried once in person!
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
We had some pizza here the first year it opened. And, my God, it was great and really close to what Chicago pizza is (my wife is from Chicago and I grew up in the midwest.) But each year the taste of the pizza has gotten worse. Today we had a sausage, onion, garlic, green pepper pizza. And it was oddly sweet and somewhat tasteless. The sausage, that was the star of the pizza on our first trip, was now tasteless. We will probably throw away half of this large pizza as it is not fun to eat. And that will be the last pizza we get from these guys.
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
The first time I ordered from this place, I was extremely disappointed. I wrote a long and thoughtful review and ended up still giving them 3 stars. I always give a place a second chance. Just gave Bridge City theirs. Updating review to one star. They just suck. Period.
google avatar

Yelp
Slow resolution of improper charge to credit card. When I called to let Bridge City Pizza know that I had been charged for a pizza that failed to arrive after 2 hours of waiting and being reassured that it was "on it's way", they were relatively gracious about reversing the charge. With the "2 hour wait for the non-delivered pizza" in mind, I was a bit dubious that they would actually rectify the situation. So, a month later, I checked my statement to make sure that the charge had actually been reversed. It had not. I went in person to the restaurant and the manager who I had spoken to was there and remembered the incident as she is the one who took the original order and "refunded" the charge. She showed me a handwritten note that said that $26 had been credited to my card ($32 was the original charge which included a $6 delivery tip, she took the liberty of still giving the driver the tip for the pizza I never received!). I asked if she had credit card print out, she did not. A customer walked in at the time and she huffed and said she would just give me back the amount in cash. I accepted and left, never to return.

Yelp
Two different pizzas were ordered on a Saturday night for five people. Three of us ate from the "build your own" vegetarian pizza and by Monday morning we had succumb to food poisoning. We really enjoyed their pizza at the time. Their website said they "offer only the highest quality ingredients". Nope. I guess not always. Why did this have to happen and happen to first time customers? Update. We recovered several days later.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
It's all about the Big Hurt! I've been eating this awesome Chicago style pizza for years. We are so lucky to have these good folks in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Roy N.

Yelp
Haven't tried the pizza yet, but their chicago-italian beef sandwich knocks it out of the park! I would say it definitely edges out Micheal's on account of sheer regality (their house-made Giardiniera is stellar).... their house-gravy and especially house roast-beef is just superior. Where Micheal's sandwich is like a sturdy old grandpappy-sandwich, this one is in it's velveteen PRIME. VERY flavorful, spicy, and constructed with care... by that I mean that you can tell that these people give a damn, from start to finish; definitely not a hipster-wich... Bridge City is the bomb! I'll be back here again and again. Also, these guys are awesome. They do what they do, no frills, just bad-assery.
google avatar

Yelp
What a great experience! I thought I would order lunch while I was getting my haircut down the block. When I was done, they had my food ready and made, even during Covid awkwardness, an enjoyable one . Thanks!
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
I've never had Chicago style thin crust before, but this is really outstanding! Party cut pizza, which means it's cut into small squares and the large is really big. This has become our go-to spot when we're looking for a big pie to feed our whole family and recently I discovered that they're serving burgers and fries as well--perfect for a Friday lunch and the line is shorter than Super Deluxe.
google avatar

Ryan V.

Yelp
Great spot for classic Chicago style fare. I have had their pizza on many previous occasions, but this time we got an italian beef and the one way burger and both were delicious. Friendly staff and a great selection on the menu. Thanks !
