Despite a city with open bottle policies, multiple official drinks (hurricanes anyone?), and a street actually named Bourbon, I'm still gonna gravitate to beer. At Brieux Carré Brewing Company I found some superb beer at that.
The craft beer scene of New Orleans is not bursting at the seams like some other cities (maybe it's that street I mentioned which holds a lot of the enticement instead), but for those who have bought into the awesomeness of ale, they'll be rewarded with Brieux Carré.
The brewery, located on the outskirts of the French Quarter, is pretty darn small. Actually the courtyard they have in the back is probably bigger. But that adds to the craftiness (as often seen in bite-sized breweries of the New York area).
You'll find several of BCBC's own brews on tap along with a handful of other local ones. Despite not having had those other beer options, I stuck with Brieux Carré exclusively (after all I was visiting them, right?). A flight of six set me back $20 (a little steeper than I'm used to), but each beer gave way to truly awesome flavor.
I did my best to pick a nice variety of styles. From the amber-colored and smooth Maw Maw, to the perfectly sour Rubber Chicken Rainbow, to the chocolatey finish of Big Beautiful Malt, each beer was almost better than the last. Favorite? Barnyard Circus Folk which gave way to a lovely subtle bitterness while still holding on to superb saison qualities. Nothing disappointed so lemme just shout out the other two: Notice Me Senpai (a robust porter that lived up to the style) and Rainbow Book Quote (a not-so-hazy NE style IPA that still brought on the dank). A quick convo with one of the employees was also cool (as was his offer to charge my mildly-dying phone). Gotta love friendly beer makers.
Overall, Brieux Carré really rocks the (hopefully) growing craft beer scene of New Orleans. Each brew was made with effort and you can tell by the taste. I almost went back a second time (if I wasn't venturing for other beers), but just know that if/when I do return to NOLA, Brieux Carré is gonna be one of the top choices in damaging my liver (after a hurricane, of course).
