The 4 Best Restaurants In Phoenicia, New York 2024 - The Catskills - The Infatuation

"The menu at Brio’s is encyclopedic in length, so we’ll save you some time and tell you to just focus on the pizzas (and the 14 flavors of frozen margaritas). This old-school Phoenicia spot makes very good thin-crust Neapolitan-style pies in both personal and large sizes. Heads up: They don’t start making pizzas until noon, so plan your day accordingly." - team infatuation

The Top Restaurants the Northern Catskills Near Hunter Mountain | Eater NY

"An institution since 1973, Brio’s does it all, all day long. Italian breakfast runs every day of the week, with wood-fired pizza served from noon until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. In between, lunch offers dishes like a duck quesadilla or wild mushroom lasagna, as well as lactose-free smoothies, cakes to go, and 22 beers on tap. The comfortable dining room, straightforward decor, and convenient Main Street location in Phoenicia, as well as the generous portions and friendly staff, make it a great fit for families." - Robert Rubsam

My wife and I came here for dinner while staying at the Urban Cowboy Lodge. The place is pretty simple. More pizzeria than cafe/restaurant but food was great, great beer and alcohol selection. Several vegan or vegetarian options. The personal pizza was much bigger than I expected. I'm so used to joke portions these days that it's a pleasant surprise to get a good amount of food on your table. Definitely coming back if I'm in the area again.

Google
Got a personal size New York style pizza to go. It was a decent pie. Good for two people. The dessert fridge is heaven. Got slices of pumpkin cheesecake and German chocolate cake. At $8.60 a slice, it's pricey but very tasty.

Everything was good. A lot needed salt. Clean. Friendly service. Best pretzel I’ve ever had. Truly.

Google
Great food! 1st time there. Beautiful quiet town. Stunning area in all seasons. We had an unexpected Great lunch. Very hearty and tastey. Place has outdoor seating too. Place needs some thorough cleaning though.

Google
8 of us stopped in to grab some pizza while traveling because my son saw good reviews. The pizzas were excellent. Regular cheese was my favorite. Very thin crust, very tasty sauce and cheese. Our group also loved the tomato, basil, garlic and the Aunt Mary's, which is a thicker crust. We also loved the hot pretzel and the mustard served with it. The waitress was personable and service was quick but not rushed. Would absolutely go there again.

Google
A big menu so lots to choose from. Generous portions. Amazing desserts! Friendly staff. Family owned and it shows. Love love love. Definitely recommend

We arrived for lunch and we had a pasta and a pizza for 2 people. It was a ton of food and I enjoyed it so much! Our waitress was amazing and she delivered!!!

Google
Super chill place to hang out and have a beer. Indoor and outdoor seating. Bartenders are attentive. The food menu has many options from Italian to Mexican to American. I have never had a meal I didn't enjoy. Sweet potato fries are the best. Pizza with sesame crust and cannolis for dessert. Awesome spot!

Yelp
I grew up in Big Indian, NY, so the town of Phoenicia was a common visiting ground for family and friends. Recent years has seen a larger influx of people to visit as tourists who don't understand the significance and meaning Phoenicia holds to me (much to my chagrin). Brios IS the best restaurant for miles around and has some of the most unique and creative food options in the area. I visit nowadays for the nostalgia aspect alone of sitting down with friends and enjoying fantastic pies crafted from their old traditional pizza brick oven. It is a MUST visit.

Yelp
We ended up at Brio's after a power outage put the kibosh on our original dinner plans. We could have done worse! Is it glamorous? Is it hip? Not at all. But with the creeping Brooklyn sameness blanketing the entire Hudson Valley, it's nice to know there is still somewhere out there that feels...unique. Our two pizzas, generous salad, and a bottle of Rioja hit the spot. I really enjoyed the sesame seed crust on the pizzas, too. Prices are great and the staff made every effort to keep us happy. Thanks, Brio's!

Yelp
Been coming here for 35+ years , great pizza spot on par with some of the top NY spots. Calzones are tasty too. Whether you are at Brio's or the adjoining Sportsman, you came bet on having a good meal in an entertaining environment that doesn't disappoint.

Yelp
The pizza here is simply amazing. Cooked to perfection with a nice char from the oven. I have been here multiple times and the quality of the pizza is always consistent. The pizza crust is covered in sesame seeds which is a unique/pleasant twist. I also highly suggest the buffalo wings appetizer. EASILY the best pizza in the area. The service is always satisfactory

Yelp
My fiancé and I came here to watch a hockey game since we are from out of town. The bar tender, Ed, was attentive and he seemed to know every patrons order before they even said it. He was definitely on top of things and it added to the nice close-knit vibe. We felt very welcome. The locals are super friendly here. The wings are amazing. Decent selection of local IPAs which I'm usually not a fan of beer at all but they had some really good ones that I enjoyed sipping! I also had a personal pizza and it was great.

Yelp
A true upstate classic. Hearty food, affordable prices, great atmosphere, wonderful service. My family and I have been coming here for years and I suggest it to anyone whenever I can. The positions are huge, even for the personal sized pizzas, and best believe you will leave happy with your belly FULL!! Save room for dessert! The servers are always incredibly helpful and accommodating, helping you with a smile for whatever your heart and stomach desires. Skip the chain spots, take a drive, and enjoy yourself!

Uila M.

Yelp
Brio's brick fire pizza was delicious, especially with the sesame seed crust. Good portions, reasonable prices. They had a nice draft list of local beers. The service was fantastic and outdoor seating was lovely. Would recommend!!

Yelp
The waitresses there are rude. They cannot handle when it's busy, they were irritated and rude

Yelp
A reasonable place off 28 where there is not a lot going on. We stopped on our way to Cooperstown and had a very good meal. Our waitress was a little clueless, but I think they hire local high school/college kids and she was very nice. We tried four different meals, and there was really nothing bad to say about any of it. I got ahi tuna tacos and was a little disappointed the tuna was breaded deep fried bites, but you know what? It was really good and hit the spot. Portions are reasonably sized, we even took some to go for later. Parking behind the restaurant was good, and street parking was available. We sat outside on the patio with the umbrellas and watched life go by. It was very relaxing. None of us could get the free wifi to work from the patio though!

Yelp
Became a local about 8 months ago, and been a regular at Brios during that time. This review is based on my dining choices and expectations. I usually have beer and pizza. The beer selection is one of the best in the area. They've got Spaten on tap and the beer lines must be clean because it's great. The pizza is arguably the best thin crust pizza I've had anywhere. When you park, you'll see multiple cords of wood drying, waiting to be thrown in their wood fired pizza oven. It never disappoints! Service is good and friendly. The desserts are hit or miss, but their pies are usually excellent. So for pizza and beer, 5 stars!

Yelp
Took my friend here for Father's Day was the worst Food I've had in years ordered enchiladas look like soup unrecognizable as enchiladas manager refused to admit and gave us a hard time about removing it from our bill I ordered a burger the easiest thing for any restaurant to make I got it and immediately before you even taking a bite realized it wasn't even cooked correctly and that the Big Mike Burger was actually two frozen beef patties tasteless rubber garbage burger was made twice both times uneatable never was offered to take it off my bill second time I ordered the burger I asked just for some extra macaroni salad didn't get that got one small ice cream scoop of macaroni salad . Both meals were completely uneatable definitely the worst Food I've had in years I don't understand why this place gets any good reviews at all maybe I should have ordered the pizza . Then the manager had the nerve to tell my friend she had authentic Mexican Cooks more like undocumented dishwashers working the line at least that's what it's tasted like . Bill with tip was $65 and I never felt more ripped off then she had the nerve to tell us that she wanted us to come back and bring our biker friends I belong to a huge biker Club and I guarantee that none of us will ever spend a dime in this place . The only thing that tasted decent was the chips and salsa which by the way or twice as much as any place else so for two meals that were not eating a couple of beers and chips and salsa 65 bucks what a complete rip off . When you order a burger called the Big Mike you would think that they would be handmade patties which this manager bold-faced lied to me and said they were when you can obviously see that they are frozen patties tasteless unseasoned rubbery Frozen patties . This place is obviously just a tourist restaurant eat here once go back to the hotel get it out and never come back again

Yelp
The world's best fries!!! We always go in and get about 2 or 3 To go orders and usually end up coming back 20 minutes later! Service alright! Also the other day I almost was hit by a truck who was a customer at Brio's he was not friendly so watch out for a guy w this license plate in a read truck

Yelp
Sesame seeds on pizza crust? I didn't know I needed it until now. Brio's came highly recommended and now I know why. Personally, pizza never gets old. I love it and this margarita was by far one of the BEST I've ever had. It was packed with flavor and yet it was so lite. The sesame seeds added something special. If you haven't visited, make your way to over ASAP. It was worth the trip and then some. I'm already looking forward to my next visit and for sure will be recommending to friends and family.

Yelp
They have the best wood oven pizza. Food is delicious. Service is always good. And the ambiance is very welcoming. Great place! I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Attentive service. Menu filled with the greatest hits - chicken parm, fajitas, burgers, meatloaf, steak sandwiches, Caesar salad, assorted cakes ... and Hands Down Low Key coolest Bar Stool Presidents approved wood fired pizza. You can't go wrong.

Yelp
We love getting pizza and calzones from Brio's in Phoenicia. We discovered it our first night in Phoenicia-- walking distance from the Black Bear Campground. How awesome to be able to walk and get awesome pizza and bring it back to eat At the campfire! Delicious! We go back again and again!
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
Went to Phoenicia for a nice bike ride. My friend recommended this pizza and wanted to order two pies for the three of us, I thought he was nuts. Then the pizza with sesame seed crust landed on my taste buds and oh dang, what the hell was that? Am I eating a bagel or pizza? That combo was yummy. Ended up eating 3 slices and was still hungry. Would definitely take another bike ride just to eat!

Yelp
Pizza was not very good-- garlic was not fresh, glommed onto the pie in clumps. The staff was practically surly. The buffalo cauliflower bites were good, but they didn't give us the blue cheese we were meant to get with our take out order. In addition, they added a 10% gratuity for take out!! I've never heard of such a thing. As far as ambiance goes, it was not pleasant at all. Never going back to Brios ever again.

Pat B.

Yelp
Excellent always, anytime we make the 2 hr trip ! Ambiance is always calm and inviting ! Staff is always accommodating and friendly

Chris R.

Yelp
Not the best looking restaurant, but we don't have many options to eat after a long day of skiing. Waitress recommended a couple dishes, and it was delicious. French dip with their homemade bread, was outstanding. The staff was very nice and accommodating. We will be back again next weekend. By the way, we came back for breakfast. Pancakes were crispy on outside and fluffy on inside. Eggs Benedict was on point with savory ham. We will be back for sure

Yelp
This was a hard one, really. I ordered a pizza for pickup from Brio's, a margherita with extra sauce. The crust has sesame seeds, which I quite enjoyed. The sauce was hot, there was enough cheese, and it was a really nice pizza. There are a few reasons this isn't four stars, and some for why it isn't five. It's a solid 3.5 to me. It didn't achieve four stars because the sauce wasn't to my taste. It was nice, but very garlicky (I love garlic powder but prefer not to over season sauce with it). If it pulled back a bit on the seasoning, I would give it a four. The reason it isn't a five star review, is because pizza around NYC and New Haven are exceptional and create a high standard. While this is probably exceptional in a place where there aren't a lot of restaurants, I found it to be underwhelming with the quality of pizza I am used to. If I want pizza in this area, it's great to have a good option. But I wouldn't necessary go up to Phoenicia just to have pizza.

AbogadoShaw M.

Yelp
A Brooklyn Italian American gives the Margherita Pie a big thumb's up. Serious pizza. Delicious. I go to a place with pizza in its name for one thing though the desserts look great too.
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
I will put Brio's pizza up with some of the better places in NYC. Service could be a little more organized, but everyone is so sweet and kind. Food is full of flavor and definitely worth the price! If the weather is nice sit outside for the scenic view!
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
Went there for pizza, we sat down and within 5 minutes we had pizza. Who makes pizza in 5 minutes. Our drinks had not even arrived. Pizza came. It was so bad we couldn't eat it. My ten year old grandson wouldn't eat it it was so bad. The crust was barely cooked and like mush. We sent it back. It came back the same way. We got up and left. Headed over to Hunter for pizza at Mamas Pizza in Hunter NY. 15 minute drive. We ordered a pizza and it was delicious . I would give them 5 stars.

Anonymous U.

Yelp
Every time I order food from here something is wrong. For the high prices of the food, and automatic tip you would expect more. Pretty much if you don't order it exactly how it is on the menu expect something to be wrong, or at least triple check your order before leaving. My friend has an allergy and asked more than 3 times for something not to be on his pizza and after already eating a slice discovered hidden underneath everything there was still red sauce which was relayed many times to staff not to be on the pizza. I have gotten orders that cost more than $200 and had things wrong, and gotten something small for $30 and still had something wrong. Anytime you bring a problem you have up to staff they don't respond well to it, and often give you an attitude in response. For such high prices food again I would just expect a little bit more at least for the employees to be more careful with taking the orders at the minimum. Last year I was left on hold for more then 40 minutes and they didn't know the phone was still on so I could hear staff laughing, and complaining in the background the whole time. Just try harder.

Ricardo B.

Yelp
Have been here many times and the food is actually pretty good. The front staff is always polite and nice. The pizza is good too, reliably. Unfortunately we can't go back because the bartender is extremely rude and this has been an issue more than once.

Yelp
My favorite pizza of all time and the only one I'll eat! Thin crusted with sesame seeds under and over crust - delicious sauce, fresh mozzarella, and brick oven flavor - the best!!! And of course other toppings and great choices and foods for breakfast- lunch- and dinner!

Christopher K.

Yelp
The Pizza is delicious. Beautiful oven, perfect balance, sauce, crisp, pies, toppings. Wood fired, advanced, in a step back in time, portal.

Carina T.

Yelp
Walked in to get 2 slices of pizza to go and was ignored for at least 10 minutes before deciding to leave. Eventually left because we were clearly not going to be served. There was nobody working the main counter. It was a busy Sunday afternoon but did not expect the rude and standoffish staff. They brushed by us and did not even say hi or attempt to serve us. It was like we were invisible, but they were clearly looking at us with disdain and looking at each other in annoyance that we were there. Very disappointed because the pizza looked good, but the service was awful.
google avatar

Nancy P.

Yelp
Pizza and service was so great! That sauce apparently is a family recipe and everything is homemade, which our server was really proud of. You can tell people liked working there. I also had the German chocolate cake and martini. Everything was superb! Gosh that sauce!

Jan A.

Yelp
You have to go looking to find such snarly, surly service. We went in and stood by the counter to look at the menus. Someone behind the counter ignored us until I finally asked if we should order there or if there was table service. "You sit down you get a menu," she said, not in a friendly way. So we got a table outside that another party had just left. A waitress went by empty handed three times and ignored us. Then when someone did bring us table settings and menus, she acted annoyed. We waited some more for someone to come and take our order. Then we gave up and went down the street to Bettina, where the menu was more limited but everyone was nice and attentive and the food was good.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful service, friendly staff! Must try the sesame seed crust - it's a game changer!!!

Yelp
Great food, large portions, and good service. Can't ask for more. Take your wallet out and spend some money here.

Susan M.

Yelp
The pizza, sandwiches, breakfast items and cakes are all dynamite!! Their marinara is delicious,, and I don't usually like marinara if its not cooked at home.. Awesome food! Outside dining on a cool sunny day is just fantastic.
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
This place has really gone downhill in recent years and it has everything to do with the clueless staff / management. They have adopted a new business model that is confusing and does not function well. Customers must now order their food and drinks at the counter and then sit down at a table and someone brings it out to you. My partner and I had just been hiking all day and were thirsty and famished. Right after placing our order, we were told our drinks would be right out. We just wanted some ice water and a Diet Coke. After 15 minutes of waiting, we complained to the woman who took our order who replied with "I didn't take your order." Someone apologized to us and said they'd be right out. Five minutes later, the cooks brought our food out and we rightly complained that our drinks still had not arrived. How can you not get this right? Also if presentation of food is so important that you have the cooks bring it out, why are you sticking to the "order at the counter" routine that really cheapens the dining experience. Bottom line - cooks should cook and stay in the kitchen. Waiters / waitresses should take your order and serve your food. This business model sucks and is confusing to people who don't go there everyday. Also, the staff are condescending and need an attitude check. Every other restaurant on earth knows how to serve food. Figure it out or close down. The food is actually good here but I would rather eat at a gas station than go to this place again.

Rick T.

Yelp
Stopped on way through town day after New Year's Day. Friendly staff...one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! Thoroughly enjoyed the Italian Grinder and wife had veggie quesadilla which she equally enjoyed. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
We were starving when we arrived at Brio's. The menu is very large and overwhelming. It took me a few minutes to figure out what I wanted. I have to say the portion sizes are huge. If you underestimate what you want to eat, that is the way to go. I ordered the Brio twist with swiss cheese instead of gouda. The sandwich did take some time to arrive. Others in my party ordered a pizza to share. The pizza arrived first, very fluffy crust and a good portion of toppings. The sandwich was good; I could taste the avocado, pulled pork and the sauce as it dripped out of the ciabatta bread. The garlic fries were so crispy and spiralled. It felt like a great meal after traveling 3 hours in a car. Afterwards I found the meal on the salty side and had to drink a lot of water. We had elected to sit outside which in restrospect was a bad idea. There were flies harrassing us as well as yellow jackets. It made it difficult to eat my sandwich because how on earth can I hold my sandwich and swat a fly away at the same time? I felt rushed. Then a yellow jacket decided to come and eat my curly fries (maybe they had honey or some sweet component in them? By then I was done with my meal. Everything tasted good but the outside experience was lacking. I was surprised they charged what they do for a sandwich platter (I thought they were more closer to NYC prices than a small town in the catskills). The place has wifi but the wifi is not strong. Wifi reception does not reach into your car parked in their lot! The bathroom was clean but there is only one toilet room per gender so you will have to wait your turn by the desserts counter. Our saving grace was it was recommended by the Rail Explorer's staff, as we had no idea what was open on this weekday when we thought most places would be. When we arrived around lunchtime this place was hopping. Next time I will probably have to dine in. Overall 3.5 stars. The place seems popular around here since the lot was full when we arrived.

Yelp
Solid pizza joint. We came here after a long day of snowboarding and skiing. They have a really big menu but I think the move is their wood fire pizza. I ordered a personal pizza with cheese, red sauce, onion, basil, jalapeño and asked if their sausage is crumbled or sliced. The woman said crumbled and that everyone always asks that and she's happy it's crumbled (I wanted crumbled). It was sliced though so I was confused but it was still good. I wish my pizza was a little more well done but I definitely still recommend it. They have a great beer menu (tap and cans).

Yelp
Ive been eating here for 10 years now and know the deal. Breakfast : pastrami and eggs over potatoe pancakes, or one of the skilletts (not on menu right now) . Lunch : Mex chicken soup or pot stickers or roast beef sandwhich. You cant go wrong. Dinner : Linguini with calamari and shrimp with "hot pepper" sauce. Oh yeah portobella quesadillas are the bomb. So it's good, not the very best but real good. This area has GREAT food , enjoy and relax ... I will

Yelp
I thought I'd reviewed Brio's before but I guess not so here goes. Brio's is a favorite with us for satisfying our pizza cravings. Not that there are a plethora of pizza places in Phoenicia, but it's still one of our go-tos. Checking its website, it's been around since 1973, wow. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the pies here. Someone had picked up from Brio's my most recent eating experience, and the pizzas still tasted terrific warmed up in the oven. We ordered one with a sesame crust (Margherita, large $20.99) and I was initially skeptical of that prior to first bite, but it won me over in the end. Even though I tend to gravitate towards meatier options, Brio's cheesy veggie-focused ones like the Fresh Tomato, Basil & Garlic and the Goat Cheese are winners, try one! The attractive desserts in the case always have intrigued me, but I've actually never gotten sweets here. Someday for sure. But you can and should try a savory pie!

Frank O.

Yelp
Gourmet food and pizza in Phoenicia with excellent friendly service. We really enjoy this place. Prices are also reasonable. We always go there at least once when we are around. Don't miss it.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
We ordered a chicken parm sandwich, big mike burger, kids bacon cheeseburger, small sausage pie, and wings. Both burgers were burnt to oblivion - we were asked how we wanted them cooked and had asked for medium. Chicken parm had absolutely no flavor. Wings were dry as the desert and cost $18.95. Son's sausage pie came out after we were done eating and ready to leave. Place like this should not have a diner sized menu if they can't even execute the simple stuff. Waiter never came to our table to see if we needed anything. Food has to be ordered as soon as you walk in (very odd). Only reason for 2 stars is a good draft selection. Food and service were sub-par at best. Safe to say I won't return - would rather spend my hard earned money on something enjoyable.

Allison K.

Yelp
The food is awesome and the customer service is great also there is one specific waitress who is so polite thank you Carey

Bill B.

Yelp
If you like soft, wet noodle style pizza with crust that has the consistency of a wet sponge, this will be your go-to spot. For people that know what real pizza is, my suggestion would be to stay away. Absolutely awful.
google avatar

Kristina R.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch before our Rail Explorers tour and it was great! A couple of people in our party had some tasty egg sandwiches with the best home fries ever. The rest of us got some fantastic sandwiches, one of which was the best Roast Beef sandwich I've ever had! The staff was super friendly too!

Lucy B.

Yelp
Called to order pizza, they said wait and set the phone down on the counter, that was 12 minutes ago. 13. 15. 18. Omg I could've made dinner by now.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch recently. Loved that they had pizza by the slice and a variety of pizzas. I had two different types and both were delicious. It was a really reasonable and yummy lunch. One friend had a honey mustard chicken sandwich and another had an eggplant wrap, both of which they raved about. Solid pizzeria in the middle of nowhere! Definitely recommend

Yelp
Stopped into Phoenicia late one afternoon looking for somewhere to grab lunch. Stumbled upon Brio's and thought we would give it a try. They had a bunch of tables outside, spaced out with umbrellas. We ordered our food inside and they brought it out to us. The food was delicious and the portions were very large! I had the chicken wrap with bacon and avocado. It came with a small salad. My boyfriend had the Italian grinder with fries and macaroni salad. The curly fries had garlic and Parmesan cheese on them! They were delicious! We will definitely return to this place. I want to try the pizza. It smells delicious when you walk in!!

Richard S.

Yelp
We stayed in Phoenicia the week of September 19-23. Because many restaurants were closed, we ate at Brio's for several meals. On each visit the service was awful. The waitress would act very pleasant and then walk over to the area between the bar and the restaurant (a few yards away) and start saying nasty things about us. We wondered what we did wrong! And far as the food was concerned it was worse than the service. Though the waitress bragged about how fresh everything was it was poorly prepared and awful tasting. For example, the mac 'n cheese was watery. On another visit the nacho plate tasted like some weird ingredient was tossed in. On our final visit, the hamburger was one of the worst I ever had. Worse, we were sitting near the bar on several visits and had to listen to the drinkers talking about how they hated tourists! Eventually, we found we had to pick up food at he supermarket in Ashokan just to keep ourselves fed. Never again!
