The 38 Best Restaurants in Mumbai, India - Eater

"No restaurant list in Mumbai is complete without a mention of Britannia, the Irani cafe that made mutton berry pulao a household name in the city. Made with tart zereshk berries (barberries) from Iran and tender pieces of lamb, the dish has remained consistent in a city that’s changing constantly. While it’s no longer an affordable order for the average Mumbaikar, eating a portion is a rite of passage. Pair with Pallonji’s soda and an order of dhansak (lentils stewed with lamb) for a nostalgic lunch in south Mumbai. For nearly a century, the restaurant was overseen by the beaming face of Boman Kohinoor, the third-generation owner and a city icon who saw the restaurant open in 1923 and died in 2019." - Sumedh Natu

Hands down - this is an absolutely precious place that must be visited. One must eat here. One must sit and revel in the charm, the grace, the serenity, the unabashed quirkiness, and the sheer delight of this restaurant - this establishment. It is as if one enters a sublime dreamworld. The owners are gems, and named thus. Mr Afsin Kohinoor and his daughter, Diana exude the grace, charm, kindness, intelligence, serenity, courtesy and excellent service in a world that needs more of their kind. All the folks here and the waiters are courteous, polite, well-mannered, and dignified. Excellent, top-notch, delicious food that brings a smile to one's face and the raspberry soda is a delight. I had their chicken sandwiches and raspberry soda one afternoon, and their chicken cutlet and raspberry soda on the second day. I hope to visit again. One can write stories - indeed one should write stories about this place if one can. It is not just a restaurant - it is one of a kind place.

As we were in Mumbai, we had to try this iconic place. Ambience wise it was good. Food taste was good but our expectations were higher given the hype of the place. Nevertheless, any visitors from outside should try atleast once.

I visited Britannia & Co. during my trip to Mumbai — it’s one of those iconic names that everyone talks about, so I was genuinely curious to see what the hype was about. What I tried: Chicken Cutlet Raspberry Rosé Drink (Pallonji’s) Food: The chicken cutlet was good — crispy on the outside, flavorful inside, and served with a light gravy. The raspberry drink was nostalgic but overly sugary for my liking. Ambience & Interior: The place has a very old-school vibe, but unfortunately, it’s more on the neglected side. Peeling ceilings, old fans, worn-out walls — the charm of "heritage" turns into discomfort pretty quickly. One thing that really stood out was the walls full of signs and slogans — many of them felt like challenges or indirect taunts toward customers (like “Only Cash” plastered everywhere, "Right to Refuse Service," etc.). It felt like you were being warned or monitored rather than welcomed. Other Observations: Cash-only payments in 2025? That's a big letdown. Prices are on par with fine-dine restaurants, but the overall experience doesn’t match up. It’s run by a sweet Parsi uncle, which adds a bit of warmth, but that can’t cover up the lack of maintenance. Final Thoughts: Glad I ticked it off the list, but would I return or recommend it for the food and vibe? Not really. Feels like the place is surviving more on nostalgia and hype than actual experience. Let’s see how long that holds.

This place needs any introduction. It's an authentic and classic Parsi restaurant that has survived the test of time. They remain open for a limited time a day and have a wonderful menu of authentic Parsi food. Some might consider it to be slightly expensive, but considering the quality and quantity, it really is worth it. The only fault one may find is the place is not air-conditioned - but i feel the high roof and abundant number of fans compensate for this. The staff owner and staff are friendly and service is excellent. It is a place one must visit for a sumptuous and laid back lunch.

Authentic Parsee / Irani food. Its fame of berry pulao is well justified. Salli boti, mutton patties and caramel custard to finish with were awesome. Don't forget to order Duke's icecream soda which you don't get at many other places. Pay and park is available on weekends (not sure about weekdays). This is a non-ac restaurant. So if you go in summer, and if you do not get a table under a ceiling fan, it can be quite uncomfortable. And for a non-ac restaurant it is very costly (Lunch for 3 of us costed us almost 4k).

BRITANNIA & CO. – A Timeless Culinary Landmark Since 1923 Stepping into BRITANNIA & CO. feels like taking a delightful journey back in time. The restaurant’s vintage ambiance, complete with old-style seating and a classic menu, preserves a rich heritage that has been celebrated since 1923. The food is simply amazing—each dish exudes authentic flavors that have stood the test of time—and the service is consistently good, making every visit a memorable experience. The only minor drawback is the cash-only payment policy, which might require a bit of planning. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for a taste of history paired with superb cuisine, BRITANNIA & CO. is a must-visit destination.

The food was good — we tried the Chicken Berry Pulao and Salli Boti Mutton, followed by soda-flavored drinks and custard. It’s worth a try, though do note that most of the dishes have a noticeably sweet taste, which may not appeal to everyone. I assume the sweetness is tailored to suit the large number of foreign visitors they receive. Personally, it’s a one-time experience for me.

I don't think this place needs any introduction. The vibe of this place is completely different, it's vintage and classic. I tried their famous berry pulav and it was amazing, a burst of different flavours , of course with their raspberry soda. Places like this takes you back in time , it's almost magical.
