Brixton Village Market

A not very big food hall. There are several covered lanes bordered by a multitude of small restaurants with various specialties, but also bars or other shops. At 150m you find a similar place, Pop Brixton.

Had never been to Briston Market before & was bowled over by the experience. The noise, smells, abundance of fresh food,fish & meat. I closed my eyes and was transported baci to Africa. Will be going back sion

I could eat and drink in a different place here all week! I thoroughly recommend it. I've heard that it can get rammed on a Saturday, but it seems fine on a weekday. There are also market stalls here selling anything from vintage clothing to exotic spices.

A fun, super busy indoor market that has many small restaurants featuring various cuisines, including Japanese, Colombian, Thai, Caribbean etc. There are many small boutiques, butchers, coffee shops, fruit and vegetable stands. We had a great time. Had coffee and cookies at a Cafe and later on we had lunch at Santa Fe (Colombian restaurant). I had the fish soup and an empanadas. Both were delicious. My cousin had a lentil soup (very tasty).

25/10/24: Hemel Hempstead and Brixton Weekend! Had such a fantastic time here at Brixton Market. So many culinary cuisines from all around the world. The market full of colourful characters too. A fantastic place for people watching, while drinking and eating!

There are many different types of restaurants. This time I had lunch so I didn't go anywhere, but I’d jump at the chance to try it next time. It's fun just looking around.

It's not easy to make Thai food vegan. The ingredients are really fresh, the taste is strong but not too spicy, children can eat it, adults can eat it, and people who don't eat very spicy can eat it.

Easily one of the best markets in London. Super colourful with an incredible variety of exotic fruit and veggies, fresh meat, fish, loads of independent gift stores and food options as well. Everyone was kind and helpful when choosing what to buy or try. We bought lots of Caribbean fresh fruit and enjoyed Ethiopian food. Oh, and found some really wonderful beauty + skin products with natural ingredients only. Would recommend for a nice day out!

LOST IN BRIXTON It was an absolute Joke!! We booked a table which I got sent and email for, for it not to even be confirmed that we had a table. The lady was nice enough to get us a table even though they were fully booked. What was ridiculous was that we looked on the website which clearly stated you were doing bottomless brunch to find out that they don't even serve brunch which means food. We brushed it off and thought okay £25 for bottomless drinks that's okay we went there to find out that the website is wrong and there is no bottomless brunch. They suggested that we sit and have a drink which is £10-12 for 1 cocktail which is tiny! The security was also sooo rude they were looking down at us like we were trash! I feel that this a lot of false advertisement and they should sort out there website as it's super misleading! WING AND TINGS They were amazing! Super lovely staff, amazing food! Great beer! I will be going back again and again!

We visited both places (which are across the street from each other) two days ago and it was all very disappointing, as we'd read about the complex and it had sounded well worth visiting. Market Row is very small & it consists primarily of food stalls, and it was very unappealing. Brixton Village is a little larger (although not nearly as large as the description had sounded), and it has lots of small restaurants plus a few tiny shops. We ate dinner at one of the restaurants and it was pretty bad (see my separate review).

Hello east London. Erm, hold on where am I again? Ohhhh... I'm in Brixton, Riiiight! As Craig mentioned this little space has been popping up with some gems, less of a market and more of a pop up shopping centre, you'll find a collection of boutiques, shops, cafés and eateries that are really unique. I came here on a Sunday. Not advisable. Most places seemed to be closed. I did however have a lovely time browsing the shops that were open and enjoying some really good coffee. We need more places like this in London, where locals can show what they do best and represent the character of the area. Come down on an evening and find performance art, come during the day and have some cake. It's all a wonderful time here in Brixton.

Another update is required! My first review in Jan 2011 spoke of the local feel to the market, with exciting new ventures opening up and a growing food culture being devloped. My 2nd review in August last year suggest that the place was about to explode in popularity and that you should get to Brixton to sample BVM's offerings before it's too late. Well, it could well be too late! BVM is busy every evening it's open, with long queues forming for the popular restaurants, and the others full to the brim. I'm told that the number of restaurants has reached it's limit, and that the rest of the other units are to remain as market stalls or boutiques... so the queues will remain! It's a great place to be of an evening, with a great atmosphere and very high standards of food to be had. Although the number of gastro-tourists and scenesters arriving in Brixton (and moving to) each evening is swelling, especially in the summer months. So the advice is this; arrive early to get spots at the more popular spots, or be flexible to try the few places that seats come 8pm. No longer a locals secret, but a London phenomenon. In Brixton. Who'd have thought it?

A wonderful place to visit during weekend. A vibrant, multinational roofed market, few minutes walk from Brixton underground station. Small restaurants, bars, grocery and fabric shops are nicely sitting one next to the other making this market unique. Perfect place for breakfast, brunch or lunch!

Who knew there were two? This first time I ventured to Brixton, I only walked the outer market and was unimpressed. But I kept hearing good things about unique places, so after investigating a little bit more, found there was another market - inside and adjacent to the street one. I loved the mix of eateries ranging from Chinese dumplings to African to Gelato to a place where you make toast. Some are hip and crowded while others are quick and easy. Like my ex. I also like the fact that these places are indoors and open throughout the week - unlike many other market-related eateries in London.

Pretty cute place! Lots of stalls, foods and cafes from all over the world! Overall seemed like a typical food market to me. Had quite a few shops selling (in my opinion overpriced :)) clothes, jewellery, art and trinkets too.

There was a few vendors open but a lot of them were closed. I went on a Monday and it was raining so I didn't get to experience this location to its fullest, advise to go on a weekend if you want to check it out

Attention hipsters, foodies, culture aficionados, curious... This is a must-go place in SW. Absolutely blown away by the vibrancy and diversity of Brixton Village. From Mexicanos selling you tapas in a street-food like atmosphere to the classy coffee shop, from the super steakhouse to the African food stall, you will find so many different things there that you will not know where to start. Brixton Village is what I would personally describe as the best of Montmartre bohemian vibe with the tropical flavour of Chateau Rouge Market in Paris, all perfumed with the authenticity of Chelsea Market in NYC. It is not very big, which gives it some touch of intimacy. It feels touristy but also incredibly authentic. It feels as much hipstery as it feels open to all. And maybe most important, it's incredibly affordable for what it is. Wherever you are in London, or if you happen to be in our city for some time, please go there. I promise you won't regret it. It's an absolute must-experience in Brixton. In the SW. in London. That's all!

Brixton Village Market (filled with hip small businesses, coffee shops and food vendors) is in a wonderful, battered-looking covered market wedged between Brixton Road and Coldharbour Lane. It is not to be confused with Brixton Market which is in very close proximity (filled with men standing behind folding tables covered in scary-looking polyester underwear that your grandmother might wear if she were a prostitute, as well as hawkers trying to convince you to buy 1 of their 30 chickens hanging by their feet ever-so enticingly) on Electric Avenue. While I do enjoy buying enormous fish heads as much as the next person*, I much prefer drinking piccolos, eating homemade biscuits and buying vintage clothes**. _____________________________________ *Brixton Market is great for this. **Brixton Village Market is great for this.

Gentrification aside, the Village is a great place to go and will satisfy your taste buds as it caters for literally all kinds of food eaters, be you vegan, a Caribbean food fanatic or a hearty burger person, you'll find something to suit your taste. Because of the melting pot of restaurants, with it, comes a buzzing atmosphere that makes it a great evening, brunch or breakfast place. My personal faves are The Provincial (latino fusion), Carioca (Brazilian fusion), Senzala (creperie), Kao Sarn, Seven, but there are so many that I still have left to try which is why you're always spoilt for choice! Mini tips: If you go in the winter, choose places with indoor seating, even though many places offer you blankets, you will eventually freeze. Also make sure you have money on you as most places don't have card machines.

This was a teeny bit of a trek from the other end of the Victoria line where we live...but I would definitely come back! It seems like South London has made its own mini Shoreditch... I am already in Love with Okan (for amazing okonomiyaki), I have heard great things about Honest burgers...and my boyfriend wants to come back for the coffee/cakes.

Colourful and eclectic, Brixton village Market is a-buzz with energy. Come and catch-up with some friends at one of the many eateries from various cultures all over the World. Be warned! They're popular, so you may have to queue but the turn around is pretty quick. Or indulge yourself in a treat or a present for someone in the many shops selling clothes, art, jewellry and various other curios. Or maybe you just want inspiration for something to cook. No problem there, check out the food stalls. It's a very happening indoor market with live music events frequently on. When I was there we witnessed a mardi gras, carnival-esque dance and drum procession. I loved it! It's quiet on Sunday with quite a few shops closed. I'll definitely go again to browse and maybe give in to the temptation to spend!

What can I say this place is just the bomb! Haha! I know to some of you, the idea of coming to Brixton is like a trip to the Sahara but, hand on heart, this little hot spot is worth walking over smoldering coals for! Ever changing and ever growing, it really is a gem that has something to offer everybody. Hosting foods from nations across the globe, you'll never be short of something to satisfy your craving. There is so much to try and I'll admit that it's going to be a challenge to sample it all - good challenge mind! Like the restaurant and cafe's, we are not short on unusual and flavorsome off the wall art, vintage shops, boutiques and live music, are all but some of the attraction you'll be sure to encounter on your adventure through the arcade. Right I'm off to get me a gluten-free, sashimi, okonomiyaki covered cupcake. With a side of refried beans and steak!

I always describe this place to my American visiting friends as similar to "Chelsea Market" in NY, but with more history. Whatever your opinion may be on the gentrification debate of the area, this market is probably the reason I moved to Brixton. It's a covered market, but you'll feel like you're still outside, because of the glass panels in the ceiling. There's food from everywhere, and all of them are high quality. I frequent Mama Lans for spicy Chinese noodles, Honest Burgers for burgers, and Restaurante Santafereño for Columbian breakfast. As a Korean, I'd love if there was a bibimbap or spicy tofu soup restaurant there - maybe I'll open one! I like the gritty nature of the Village and that it isn't on a tourist map - the cues are already long enough as it is, and I don't want it to turn into another Borough Market.

Chicken hearts, quite possibly the best pizza in Britain, the best coffee south of the river (if not in London), breadfruit, linguiça, fabric, luggage, goat meat, fabulous fresh prawns, crazy African herbs, and lovely restos. It's old, it's new, it's community, and it's brilliant. It's the covered bit of the Brixton market, and it's fantastic. Always has been but a bit better recently.

Brixton has changed so much since I lived in London in 1987. It was always colorful and eclectic, but with a hint of danger. Now back to visit a friend, I'm so thrilled to see how this part of London is literally booming. We strolled through the Brixton Village Market and I just loved the international flavor that permeated everything from the tiny little shops to the cafes to the goods on sale. Being that it's enclosed, it's a perfect way to start or end a rainy Sunday.

Brixton Village is full of one word named shops (e.g. Honest, Federation, Elephant, Relay) - most lowercase and at least one with a full stop - and, from what I could tell, only patronised by the gentrifiers of Brixton. Nothing wrong with any of that (except the trendy lowercase, one word-full stop bullshit), just an observation. Though most of the shops are located within the warehouse area there are a few which are able to use the outdoor courtyard, which looked lovely on a sunny autumn day. The Village is small so you won't get lost though there are many options underneath this roof so you may be overwhelmed. I knew beforehand where I'd be dining but had I gone with no plan I would've had a very hard time deciding between offerings.

I really can't rave enough about this place. So many different restaurants from around the world and a reasonable price in comparison to other places of comparable quality in London. Furthermore, of the roughly 8 or so places I've had a Caipirinha in Europe, A little crepe place in Brixton Village was the most authentic and tasted just like the ones I've had in Brazil.

Brixton Village is hands down one of the most interesting places in London. If you're a Londoner and have never been, you have to give it a go, and if you're a tourist this place will give you a much better insight into the real London far away from the usual bland tourist areas. lots of independent restaurants offering up very different cuisine than the usual high street faire. It also has art shops, cool vintage boutiques and cafes/bakeries. All within an awesome urban setting, what's not to love?

Somewhere along the way, the British hung up their posh overcoat and put on the safari gear to step outside of observed mealtimes, etiquette and culinary expectations and embraced the food informalities often observed by everyone in Europe except us, until now that is. We've shrugged off the toff handshake and greeted the recent wave of pop-up restaurants with a warming, full body embracing hug! We gave street vendors hi-fives whilst scoffing down a variety of culinary delights and taking in the scents of culture in one quick stroll... Yes street food, the new, improved fast food; doing a wonder for our culture and health alike. Still wondering what I'm talking about? If no skip to paragraph four, if yes, what?! My dear, are you still intending on your cucumber sandwiches for tea, where have you been? Pop ups are the buzzword of the startup industry with rented spaces lending their precious square metres to various budding entrepreneurs for a short lease, think garage workshops turned into a pop-up restaurant, pub storage room turned art installation and basically any bizarre, unused space turned into an innovative, incredible feat of determination and passion by one business or another. Street food, think markets with fresh produce, culinary crafting and fusion and prices barely believable for the quality... Also think perching on a wall, wet wipes and a bit of a messy affair, but if you don't mind we don't mind.. This is a food fest! So if you're new to this business of scoffing and walking, trust me men this is one thing you can multitask at and women, this is no place for a date, bearing this in mind there's a place to head to that might be a good medium between street food and pop-up. Head down south to Brixton Village for a break from the normal dinner reservations and enter the belly of the Brixton beast. By day it hosts the market with fresh fish, fruit and veg stalls set-up next to the restaurants who hold tenancy there. These restaurants vary from the more established restaurateurs such a Honest Burger and Champagne and Fromage, both of which are also situated in other locations around London, to the local guys such as Fish, Wings And Tings and Cornercopia who have held residency there for a while but on occasion let out their space to a pop-up. Conercopia is currently hosting a collaboration between a local supper club and A Grape Night In, which offers a selection of wines specifically paired to Jimmy's Supper Club menu. The vibe here changes from day to night, as the market traders shut down the Village comes into its own with dim lighting, live music and a vibe one can only attain when sat in a warehouse of food, booze and music; aptly named it does turn into its own little village. The only downside is that it has become far less BYOB friendly since my last trip, making the whole event slightly harsher on the pocket. Though the homemade ginger ale and rum punch served in Fish, Wings and Tings is not to be messed with; when the drinks are as unique as the food I can't complain. A couple if the restaurants do still offer BYOB and hey, there's nothing stopping you walking around with a few drinks until you decide where to eat... This did take us a rather long time, two g&ts twenty laps of the village later we hit the rum and chicken wings (for starts) . If you have been to Brixton and you don't know about The Village then I don't really know what you were doing in Brixton! Brixton Village Market is the heart of Brixton, with everything from cafés, to tattoo parlours, to butchers, to mini markets and fruit and veg stalls. It's a good example of all the different cultures that come together and make Brixton what it is. Always bustling with life, you can catch some live events, or meet up with friends for a coffee or pick up some wax print material or have your beef chopped up just the way you like it. There's also an amazing religious and spiritual store should you be in need of some incense or a crucifix. Basically it caters for all of your physical, aesthetic, emotional and spiritual needs.

Brixton Village Market is now open on Thursday nights until 10pm. Along with their festivals with pop up performances and activities every Saturday during the day, they are now open late on a Thursday. There are around 10 amazing restaurants with food from all over the world and a bring your own alcohol policy (they do not charge corkage). There are pop up performances and activities every Thursday night that run from 6ish to 10pm. A really friendly crowd there. The market was half empty at the end of last year and now there are a load of new businesses and arts projects in there - it is a 1930s indoor market- full of atmosphere. Recommend highly. One of my all time favourite London places! One complaint is the hours, they tend to close up shop pretty early around here. So many delicious delights!

Walk through the market, cross the street and enter the second half of the market - the restaurant and small designer shop section. Here you'll find a selection of boutique restaurants and design shops and a buzzing happy atmostphere.

Awesome vibe and incredible variety of different foods for those not wanting to break the bank. A testament to the diversity that London holds! Try Pakistani, Osaka-style, Jamaican, or something pretty traditional if you're not feeling too wild. Would highly recommend as a place to visit if you're in the area.

I really love Brixton Village Market - it's the perfect mix of well..everything. My boyfriend, dear friend and I came here on Saturday. We wandered around for ages looking in all the little shops and trying to decide where to eat. It's an absolutely fantastic place to while away a Saturday afternoon, and the perfect place to take those out of town friends and family who enjoy something a bit out of the well trodden path.

One of London's real gems, captures the essence of Brixton along with lots of great new places to eat and shop and still relatively undiscovered. Get in there before it gets totally ruined by gentrification and tourists!

Went there last summer and loved it, but haven't really found the chance to visit again. Finally revisited last week to find the place has expanded so much! A lot of new restaurants and shops have opened and they have certainly done it up. It looks very nice now.. perhaps a bit too nice. Just another sign that the place is being quickly gentrified. It is still fun for me (as an outsider to the neighborhood) to visit though, with a lot of variety in food choices, caribbean, beijing street food, british, spanish, thai, mexican... Does send me reflecting on whether this is a good thing - while it looks cool on the outside that an old and rundown neighborhood has been revamped, it also begs the question of how much locals have benefited from this and whether it has taken all the characters out of the place. So visit sooner rather than later!

Cool non-touristy market with a bunch of small locally owned restaurants. It was a great place to get away from the hustle of the tourists. A friend took us here, as it is quite a bit out of the way from central London. Be weary of what you want to eat here as they aren't standard hours.

Brixton village is right in my neighbourhood and I try to go as often as possible. The food is amazing, and a lot of the places are BYOB. My favourites are the Thai place, the burger joint, Mama Lans, Franco Manca, the bakery for brunch... okay just all of them

I'm at pains to review Brixton Village Market with such bad rating but my last visit there ended with such an unsavoury experience that I feel compelled to write this review. Last night I had great meal with two friends who hail from north east london and we were making a concerted effort to go south. We had a lovely meal in the Crepe place, with great service and the entire tone was decidedly friendly. Once we'd paid up and left we all needed the loo and I had warned my friend that there were no toliets in individual shops at that we may need a key to go to a communal warehouse-esque toilet that caters for all the businesses. To my surprise there was a new system which required you to pay twenty-pence to enter at it was manned by two men who pecked at us with incessant instruction on how to use this tolled door. There was a flurry of confusion with the shutting of the door and the subsequent slotting of coins and I had inserted two coins and walked in. To my horrow this man locked me into a vice like grip around my body and dragged me out of the toilet. No-one should be mahandled that way - and I was particularly shocked that this man used such excessive force against a woman with no due reason. When I protested he urged me to call the police. Now I'm at least twenty pence down and wasn't able to go the toilet. This may be an old-fashioned ideology - and I'm really not that old - but when I go out for an evening with friends and support local businesses by paying £30 upwards for a meal, I expect to be afforded the luxury of a toliet stop without incurring an assault. I definitely think this tolled system and the staff who are manning it really need to be reviewed Brixton Village.

Reminds me of New York or Shoreditch, is Brixton on the edge of becoming uber cool?
