Where to Buy Better Easter Candy in D.C. | Eater DC

"This family-run grocery and general store is Chevy Chase is a one-stop-shop for after-school ice cream, sandwiches, or a bottle of wine. It’s also selling some great, unique Easter candy, like extra-large bunny grahams, spring-themed candy from Capital Candy Jar, and hard-to-find Sour Watermelon Peeps."

Google
Great neighborhood spot for quick pick up sandwich however I know things have changed but THIS IS NOT HOW THE INDUSTRIAL SANDWICH USE TO BE..LOOK AT THIS BASICALLY A LETTUCE AND BREAD SANDWICH...THIS IS ROBBERY WITHOUT THE GUN..BROAD BRANCH YOU GUYS ARE SLIPPING...BIG TIME! Trying to stay a loyal customer but looks like I'm going to have to DIVORCE THIS PLACE!

Esther Merves

Google
We are disappointed as new folks in the neighborhood. The service at the take-out counter is extremely slow and very inefficient. The young man at the check-out is consistently unfriendly and inattentive to the number of people in line. Some of the salads are very tasty and their brisket is also good. The fried chicken was very dry. Not worth the wait and inattentive service at both the counter where you order and the check-out.

Google
Awesome subs and coleslaw. Great place to shop for fine products

Google
The employees and manager are so kind! It is a boutique market (wine/beer, baked goods, fresh bread, candy, deli). Highly recommend!

Google
Awesome neighborhood corner store. I grew up in the area and have been impressed with how the store has grown over the years. It really has become a part of the community.

Google
I approached the deli counter and asked for a petite ceaser salad. I realize it was a busy time so I waited and waited for over 20 minutes to be served, so I noticed a bell, so I rang it politely. The employee snapped at me and told me I have to wait and I’m being impolite, it ruined my experience at the broad branch market. Therefore I will never be returning.

Google
We stayed at an Airbnb close by and this was truly a hidden gem! We went here for a prepared meal and snacks and we ended up visiting every day. They had so many treats from sweets to take home meals we really loved this place! Highly recommend!

Google
This is definitely one of my favorite little spots to go to when I need a quick bite

Yelp
Great neighborhood market!! I got some catering from here and they did a great job. Highly recommend .

Yelp
First opened as a market in 1919, Broad Brand Market remains a local institution. More than a general store, it's a community gathering spot. Open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the little market has a lot from a deli section, a bakery that sells pastries and ice cream, and aisles full of wine from around the world, a spice section, and any basic household good you need. There are public restrooms by a shelf of free books. There's outdoor seating where neighbors gather, enjoying the store's ice cream.

Elissa B.

Yelp
Their prepared foods are great but the service is atrocious. I have never been in this place when they are properly staffed behind the deli. I have been a repeat customer because they make good sandwiches, but the wait and the attitude of most of the workers I've encountered there are just not worth the hassle anymore. I've given up on this place and will not be back.

Donna M.

Yelp
So, the first time I went to the market was a week ago. I ordered two sandwiches. The lady at the register was amazing.. My second time, two days ago was an awful experience. I ordered the same two sandwiches. However, when I returned to the car it wasn't the sandwiches I ordered. I immediately took my order back inside and let the RUDE guy at the register know. You would have thought I was committing a crime the way he was carrying on. I handed him the sandwiches and let him know these aren't what I ordered. He was rude, disrespectful and treated me like I was trying to get somethong over on him After, literally arguing with this disrespectful guy for over 5 minutes, I politely stated, just remake the sand. He told me to please be quiet so he could speak. At that point I said, just remake the sandwiches and do not speak to me that way. The guall!! I WILL NEVER RETURN. I'm not only writing review in YELP but any other website I can find.

Yelp
I LOVE that there are still markets like this - and neighbors who support them. I could eat lunch here every day. Delicious, creative, made to order sandwiches; if there's a wait it's worth it and gives you time to browse through the novel and wide-ranging products on the shelves. But don't overlook the prepared salads, sides and entrees in the deli case - some very agreeable dishes here as well. The staff and customers are friendly and neighborly, just such a pleasant break from the brisk and impersonal supermarket experience. Go there often.

Frances P.

Yelp
I want to love this place. Especially since I'm a frequent shopper, however the customer service is subpar at best. Let me be very specific, if you are African American, spend your money somewhere else. I'm only greeted by the Ethiopian manager. Everyone else completely ignores you. It's disheartening to watch people treat with kind words and respect but I myself am treated like a second class citizen.

Yelp
We live in the neighborhood and have come here from time to time to buy food items. On 8/16/2022 my husband, newborn and I decided to drop by since it had been a while. A blonde lady who works there (or maybe the owner) followed us around the store as if we were going to steal something. Now to be fair to the blonde lady, we don't look like your typical white pale male and white pale female clients that she may be used to. We are, what one calls today, diversity. I suppose a lesson in diversity would be good for BBM blonde lady. We bought an ice cream cone and ate it outside.

Yelp
I live several blocks away from broad branch and go there fairly regularly to pick up dinner, lunch, or a cup of coffee. On the plus side, this is a local market with a surprisingly diverse and delicious range of food stuffs, good wine, and household items. If you're in a pinch for that milk or egg for your morning breakfast, they will generally have it. It is not the most affordable option around but it is convenient and tasty. Service can be a mixed bag and for that reason, along with the slightly inflated prices, it receives four stars instead of five. Overall, everyone I know in this neighborhood is greatly appreciated of of the fact it is not the most affordable option around but it is convenient and tasty. Service can be a mixed bag and for that reason, along with the slightly inflated prices, it receives four stars instead of five.

Milan G.

Yelp
The service is horrible I asked the lady to give me a bag she completely ignored me and continued with the other customer offering them a bag. So I asked again may I have a bag, and she hastily gave me the bag and made a face and everything very rude. I felt offended. NEVER coming back! All the workers are Spanish and when I called prior to coming in the lady did not understand anything I was saying. Better customer service.

Yelp
Neighborhood Market - Yes! Such a great Market in Chevy Chase right close to La Fayette Elementary School. I always come here if I want a quick snack after work. And sometimes I come here for lunch. They have the best fried chicken ever. And lots of different kind of sandwiches. This place is Awesome! It's a kid friendly place as well.

Yelp
This is a great Chevy Chase, DC neighborhood store. It is smack dab in the middle of a very tight-knit community - kitty corner from Lafayette Elementary School. It offers a select variety of high end cheeses and other accompaniments like olives, bake goods and fancy fig jams as well as a small grocery section selling staples in a back room, ice cream in another room and a take-out deli in the main room. Their tomato soup is excellent. My friend bought their macaroni and cheese which was not neon orange like you may be used to. They also sell a bottled juice called Tizane. It is made by a local neighborhood Chevy Chase couple and it is 100% Organic. I liked the jasmine flavor. They have lemongrass and hibiscus flavors too. Chevy Chase is so lucky to have this neighborhood store. Yes, prices are high, but if you live in Chevy Chase, DC then the prices shouldn't phase you one bit.

Yelp
Cute neighborhood market, with a surprisingly large variety of food. Very yummy warm sandwiches and perfect brownie.
google avatar

Grace G.

Yelp
Horrible experience. Ordered a large serving of bacon a week before an event. When I went to pick it up they had let another customer walk off with the order. When I spoke with the manager, Tracy,m she cused me out. Beware of this place!

F J.

Yelp
The place has a wide selection of quality offerings, from food, snacks perishables to slushees for the kids and 94 point Cabernets for the adults and a top notch deli operation. One of the best neighborhood corner markets I've ever seen in all the places I've lived.
google avatar

Dan F.

Yelp
Great bread. I often pick up dinner here, although it's pricey (but less expensive than going out.) Carne asada is very good and so is the catfish (among many others). They also have a good selection of beer and wine. One of my cousins, who lives in Paris and is French, loved the place when she was staying with us.
google avatar

Emmanuel T.

Yelp
Came in for a quick snack on my way home from school. The chocolate croissant, albeit on the higher end of the price spectrum, was worth every penny. I didn't stay for long (in and out in less than five minutes) but the market looks lovely. It complements the neighbourhood perfectly and is conveniently located. And as a bonus, they accept Apple Pay! Not needing my debit card is very nice. 10/10 would visit again.
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Amazing store, with excellent fresh baguettes. Prepared foods and sandwiches are great too.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
Frequent this place because it's next to my kids school - nice selection of wine in the back. Some of the consumables are expensive (baby food pouches cost twice what they would cost at a grocery store) but you are paying for convenience I guess. A quick place to grab a bagel and coffee in the morning, and there are some seats outside.
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
Great sandwiches. I had the Italian hoagie. I didn't try much else, but overall the place seemed like a nice, clean local market. Didn't have the dusty shelves like the old bodegas I grew up going to.

Yelp
Broad Branch Market has everything an amazing neighborhood marker should have--Great coffee, pastries, a huge selection of home-cooked prepared foods, yummy deli sandwiches, awesome french baguettes, milk, beer, an ice cream counter, cute picnic tables outside... I could go on and on. It truly is a community gem and we are so lucky to have it! Highly recommend BBM to anyone nearby or far away. It's an awesome destination for food or hanging out.

Yelp
While searching Yelp for a great pastrami sandwich, Broad Branch Market rolled across my screen -- I recalled being there, years ago, and being intrigued at finding an old-fashioned grocery in the middle of Chevy Chase. Today, in a driving rain, I popped in for a sandwich and popped out an hour later with the sandwich, some luscious steaks, hefty pork chops, baked salmon, doughnuts, horseradish cheddar spread, lemons, and chocolate croissants. The market was clean, the staff friendly and efficient, and this customer was delighted to say so to Tracy, the owner, who was at the register. Eureka!!

Yelp
Great sandwiches for lunch. Always well thought out specials and great bread. Every yuppified, whole Food shopping, LuLuLemon wearing, afluenza suffering crunchy, NPR listening granola head wishes they lived a few blocks from a BBM type place--even if it was only to complain about their patrons Tesla blocking their driveway. There is no denying that BBM has great food. You are going to pay for it, but it will seldom disappoint. If I lived nearby, it would be tempting to serve something from their prepared foods a few times a week. Everything in there looks and smells great. The staff is friendly and although I have never asked, I bet they would do or make anything you needed. The place has that kind of vibe. Their bread is amazingly good. If your inclined to have fresh bread with every meal, a stop at BBM would be well worth your time.

Yelp
This is the heart and soul of the neighborhood! The Broad Branch Market has been a neighborhood fixture for eons, and now with the newly renovated building and new owners, they have keyed into the upscale urban customer that lives in this neighborhood with all the right ingredients. Kids, they love kids, it is across from a school and they cater to families with young kids. Dad's, they love Dad's, they have a nice selection of wine and beer, and pre-made food that makes any Dad into a SuperPop! Dogs, they love dogs, water bowls and treats and a place to tie the pup up outside while you shop. Mom's they must love mom's because they make so many pre-made items, mom can take them home, pop them in the oven, and it looks like she is a gourmet chef who lives to make good food. Items that I like the best are the fresh made baguettes, wonderful cheese's and the Cafe Xinca coffee. always worth a stop there for those items. They make sandwiches there too, so if you are on the run, stop in and have them make you one! And then just sit out on one of the picnic bench's out front and relax and watch the neighborhood bound by. Prices are not cheap, but you get your money's worth in quality here. Check in on the social media sites like Foursquare, Yelp and Shopkick, they are hip and up on those and often have special discounts, deals or specials listed there! Saturday morning the Lafayette Farmer's Market is on across the street, a perfect compliment to this market.

Yelp
Broad Branch Market really has everything you'd want in a neighborhood market. And, if you don't have the kind of money to do your regular produce shopping here (as a recent grad, I certainly don't), you should definitely make it over for lunch. Best prepared food I've had there is the turkey sandwich with prosciutto, gouda, arugula (once this was substituted with broccoli rabe, just as tasty if not more), and some kind of rich orange marmalade (?) on fresh ciabatta. Easily one of my favorite sandwiches in DC-- it's tough to make a turkey sandwich dynamically flavorful, but BBM does it. Their banh mi sandwich was good too, but didn't wow me like the turkey sammie. Worth a try if you like banh mis, but IMHO, it tasted like a deli trying its hand at banh mi instead of just delicious banh mi (see El Floridano's for comparison). They also have a ruben and an "Industrial" italian hoagie and will make sandwiches to order. Other awesomeness: chicken tenders (moist, chunky white meat w/ seasoned breading); the extensive candy and ice cream selection that has its own room; wine and beer; really nice and friendly folks. I've also tried the mac n' cheese ($6.79/lb) and greek salad ($6.99/lb): fine but not memorable enough to pay the price again (both a bit bland). The sandwiches, however, are reasonably priced at around $8-9 and an exceptional value considering the quality of ingredients they use. One thing I'd really love to see are more sandwich creations on the menu-- it seems limited to 4 and doesn't fluctuate much (or at all?). It's nice that we can create our own, but given the success of the ingredient combo on the turkey sandwich, I'd love to see what else the BBM folks can come up with.

Yelp
Excellent pepared-meal selection. Was a great resource while working at the elementary school last week. The staff is sweet and the outdoor seating is perfect. Highly recommended with the caveat that it is slightly overpriced.
google avatar

Yelp
Many come for the fresh baked bread, others come for the sandwiches and variety of healthy sides. One of the best places to come for ice cream on a hot summer night. Whatever you choose they have picnic tables and benches in front of the market which really take the experience to next level. Plus the have bin candy for kids also. One of my favorite things is the meat case, where they sell cuts of meat at decent prices.
google avatar

Abraham K.

Yelp
Everything is good but be sure to try the Coexist Coffee and the Coexist Cold Brew - not to be missed!!
google avatar

Yelp
Besides being a staple in our family's household I personally used Broad Branch Market to cater a party for me. The food was over the top. Every guest went out of their way to comment on the food, which was finger licking good. Thanks John and Tracy. You guys rule! BTW, when Jodi pickes dinner up on the way home from you guys we all know dinner is going to be awesome and it always is.
google avatar

Vincent S.

Yelp
I used them to cater a surprise birthday party recently and found their recommendations on quantities to be spot on. The food (including dinner for 40) was fantastic.....poached salmon with dill sauce and beef fillet with chimichurri sauce. Fantastic. As if that wasn't enough, the servers they arranged were super attentive and stayed late into the night to do clean up. Their prices are high but not out of line with the competition serving this community. I will definitely use them again

Jeffry B.

Yelp
Best local market any neighborhood could hope for. Fresh French bread, cheese, deli, seafood, meat, prepared food. Loose grains, beans, nuts and spices. Ice cream, candy, slurpies, treats, coffee. Beer, wine, growlers. Xmas trees and pumpkins. Whatever you need the Broad Branch market probably has it. Prices are higher than a grocery, but this kind of convience is worth it.
google avatar

Trisha S.

Yelp
Broad Branch Market is a neighborhood gem. I do not live in this area, but I work a few blocks over on Connecticut Avenue and I make it a point to walk over once in awhile and grab a bite to eat for lunch. There is a variety of items to choose and the employees are a delight.
google avatar

Mohamed A.

Yelp
Great market. Best and the freshest food ingredients. They have really good sandwiches and pastries. I actually worked there for a couple of months. It's a great place is all I can say.
google avatar

Jocelyn S.

Yelp
So as I was strrrrraavvvvvviinnnngg and needed some food in me, I used the monocle on yelp and up popped this store! As I read some fellow yelpers and went in for the sandwich special! So when I saw Reuben on the menu I had to get it! The sandwich itself is pretty blah. The meat was decent, the bread was toasted and sauerkraut not as tangy as I would like, I am also pretty sure they used store brought thousand island dressing. In my opinion I probably should of ate the sandwich right away when they gave it to me hot...oh well lesson learned
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
Our neighborhood market! A great market to run to if you are not inclined to run to Safeway nearby or down to Whole Foods Market in Friendship Heights. Whenever I run out of something I needed for my cooking, I will just walk up to Broad Branch Market and I will always find what I needed. Management is great and the cashiers are so nice and friendly...I was there one day and I was a nickel short...would you believe the young girl covered up for my shortage! As far as prices are concerned.....I believe it is comparable to what I will pay the grocery. I cannot agree or disagree with Justin K for the "overpriced" prepared-meal collection as I have never needed to buy prepared meals. Broad Branch Market is a great addition to the neighborhood. They have everything..it is a "mini grocery the neighborhood appreciates. By they way, it is a family gathering place on weekends with outdoor tables and sitting place to sip coffee or tea and enjoy some of the market's goodies!
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
I stumbled across this happy little market when working at the elementary school! Got the gazpacho and picked up some Zeke's coffee. What a great neighborhood market!
google avatar

vanessa s.

Yelp
way overpriced (although not for this neighborhood) and they never answer their damn phones, but otherwise this is a great place. their mac and cheese is super yummy, their sourdough boules are amazing, and the location is just excellent. They've really hit upon the perfect business model.

Kate F.

Yelp
I have lived a few blocks from this market my entire life. When I was growing the Chin family owned and ran the market. When the Chin's closed the market the building sat empty for years. When the new and improved Broad Branch Market opened its doors the neighborhood took on a fantastic vibe. Friendships were made and the community grew stronger. Amazing. Lets not forget the actual market. The prepared foods and basic stock foods are wonderful. Pricey? YES. What do you expect? Its Chevy Chase DC.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
This place's picture should be next to the definition of one-stop-shop. Booze, ice cream, fine meats and breads, toilet paper, hot sauce, everything is here! And, to top it off, it's all quality stuff. This isn't you're corner store bodega, no, it's like a mini-wegmans or mini-wholefoods minus the weird hippie smell. I stopped in this place while at work because some wires were down after a storm in upper NW and we all hung out with the staff while waiting for PEPCO. Super nice staff, all the neighbors love the place, and so did we. My firehouse is across the park in Brightwood but we make the trip over from time-to-time for ice cream or other treats. I'm happy this place exists, it's a great example of a neighborhood staple and lends something to the area that could not be exist in any other form.

Beth R.

Yelp
Okay, I love this market, BUT I was just there and was so aggravated that I had to ask for the price on just about everything. None of the produce had prices, nor the eggs and milk. What is up with this? Is this supposed to get us to buy more if we don't know how much it costs? I want to know prices to decide whether it is worth buying now or waiting for my big grocery trip later to a larger store. Come on BBM, this will not encourage my business in the future. I walked out annoyed.
google avatar

Yelp
What a great for this neighborhood! Once you get in, you can't miss all the prepared foods they have ready for the day - desserts, an array of salads, cold and hot offerings, butchered meat, and fish. They also make sandwiches on the spot. I recommend the Reuben or pastrami. As you move further into the market you get your market staples - peanut butter, chips, canned goods, etc. They also have plenty of beer and wine options. If you're a fan of great beer they have three taps where you can get your growler filled! Next door they have sweets and ice cream. Plenty of options for folks. Love this place!
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
I love this little market! I frequently visit the school across the street for work and stop in during the morning to grab a coffee, or after school for a pick me up! They have fresh coffee and pastries daily, along with fresh salads, veggies, fruits, sandwiches, hot food items, meats and seafood. They also offered hand scooped ice cream and bulk candies. In addition to food, they sell wine in the back and have a variety of common kitchen and household items in case you need to grab something and don't have time to do a big grocery run. It's hard to stay away after a long day at school!
google avatar

Ixpata I.

Yelp
This is a great little market. They serve up everything from cold brewed iced coffee to their delicious deli selections. They also have some very fine pizza. And definitely check out the beer selection in the back and the fresh bread section in the front.
google avatar

Ronni G.

Yelp
Broadbranch market is like a place out of time. It's really the heart of our neighborhood. Not only do they have an amazing selection of ready made and specialty foods but they have household staples too! Plus the and ice cream bar and candy counter that my daughter still loves. The staff is also super friendly. Love having this place within walking distance!

Dave B.

Yelp
Very nice local market. They partner with local businesses and carry their products. Looking forward to seeing their next new location in Van Ness, Soapstone. Great beer selection.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
a magnificent add to the neighborhood - all the charm of an old school corner shop with all the international delicacies demanded by DC's urban hipsters - great cheeses, meats, booze, all the necessaries for cleaning your bijou craftsman plus sno-cones and candies for the kids.

Lalita S.

Yelp
Superb neighborhood store. Friendly staff, high quality goods, fresh fruits, veggies, spices, bulk food. If you dont see it in the shelves, ask a staff and they will happily get it for you such as mozarella, feta and basil. They will also cut the meats to the right size you like. We go for just the warm baguettes!

Ian L.

Yelp
This place is awesome, great food, great atmosphere, and a great sense of community. I love Broad Branch Market
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
I highly recommend Broad Branch Market for your next catered event. They recently catered a party for approximately 40 guests in our home. As a couple of novice party planners, my partner and I really appreciated Tracy and John, who are great to work with and helped us to arrange all of the details. The food was outstanding and was complimented by all of our guests. The service (arranged by Broad Branch Market and provided by PartyHandsDC) was impeccable. As for other Yelpers' comments about price, I didn't shop around very much and so I don't know how the prices compare. However, there are two things to keep in mind: 1. This is Chevy Chase. 2. You get what you pay for. I also recall seeing a comment (somewhere) about Broad Branch staff not answering the phone. This is not something I experienced, but if it does happen, it may have to do with the fact that they are very busy, and having worked with them, I don't wonder why. (Try again...You'll be glad you did.)

Yelp
I love the old time-y neighborhood feel of this market. It really, really benefits from having local camps like Hoop-Ed and Lafayette Tennis Camp nearby. That said, you over pay wildly for the convenience and charm of this place. I suppose it is to be expected with the stratospheric rent (if they are renting) they are possibly paying. I dunno though--to rent a house in that hood, it'll run you 3-4K--so how much more could they be paying? Plus paying employees, and ins, blah, blah, bah...just saying' this place always feels way, way price-y.$20+ for 3 small bags of chips and 3 medium slush puppies or ice creams feels like, woah. Favorites though are the Slush Puppy machine and all the awesome flavors--mango, lemon, etc.--also the prepared food can be delicious, but some things can be oddly bland (buffalo wings are weak) Ice cream is passable and just incredibly convenient to be able to have it dipped right there at all so no complaint on that--The Kandy Kitchen-y candy dispensers are a big hit with our family for special occasions--the painted tables and sitting area outside REALLY make this place soar above the insult of the prices...the picnic benches lend a whole Mayberry, RFD meets Martha's Vineyard feel to the place. We look forward to going there at every school break camp session.

Garland G.

Yelp
The staff of BBM is great. The convenience is good. Unfortunately, the prices are really, really high. Broad Branch Market is much more expensive than Whole foods and whole foods isn't cheap. The prep food is ok but not great. The croissants are not flakey, they are doughy with little flavor. Maybe it's the current economy but I just can't justify spending $20 for a quick, so-so tasting lunch.
