A Guide to Philly’s Essential Diners

"New owners bought and refurbished this city stalwart in 2011, and it was a 24-hour joint until the pandemic. While Broad Street Diner may not have the late-night bustle and throwback charm of a few others on this list, it does have a robust menu of diner standards available right in the heart of the city." - Olivia DiPasquale, Emily Teel

The food was good, and the service was good. Generous portions and the prices are reasonable.

Google
I eat breakfast here regularly. They have a small parking lot out front and a ramp for easy access. The breakfast is huge and excellent. Today I had a Mexican burrito flour taco filled with eggs, peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheddar cheese topped with sour cream and salsa, and home fries with onion. It was delicious. My friend had scrambled eggs, turkey sausage and French fries. It too was delicious with multi-grain bread that they call whole wheat. I am not referring to other meals, only breakfast. Philly used to have quite a few all night diners. Since Covid, so much homelessness, and crime, many diners close early.

Google
Myself and a friend visit the Broad Street dinner once in a while when in Philly. Parking is a little tricky because the lot isn't that big and a little tight, but with this being said everytime i go there i always found a spot. The dinner is a nice size place with a friendly staff. I have never had to wait to be seated. The menu offers a nice selection of breakfast, lunch and diner. Everything on the menu is priced reasonably. Positively a place to check out when in Philly. These dinners are becoming less and less in South Philly. Developers are buying these properties and making high priced apartments out of them. In my opinion there are to many over priced high rises in Philly which takes away from the uniqueness of South Philly. Check out this dinner!!!

Google
Large diner with a small parking lot and plenty of seating, good for groups. Has a very old school vibe/traditional diner feel. I ordered an egg sausage sandwich with home fries and a French toast with strawberries and blueberries. Both tasted fine but were nothing special. The French toast does not come with real maple syrup. Service was also fine.

Google
The food and service was horrible , the crab cake taste freezer burnt & the inside was wet like it was jus thrown in the deep fryer frozen , it was jus mush inside , the eggs were cold like they cooked it first than cook the rest of my meal…. My meal of shrimp and grits was $18 , they served me a small cup of grits with 4 shrimp on the side & burnt toast…. And the whole time she never even came to ask how was the food , it wasn’t even busy , she just wasn’t attentive at all …. 0/10 will not recommend , it’s not the same as it use to be

Google
I ha e not been here in 25 years, and it's still a great breakfast spot. Seen the best come and go. But Broad Street still stands proud to make the best diner food on Broad. My food was on point, and it was still prepared the same way from 25 years ago. With the love of Broad Street.

Google
Very pleasant atmosphere with the entire staff friendly towards handicap people(like myself) I have been to places with wheelchair accessible ramps, and that does not mean that the establishment is handicap friendly. Upon entering all the staff was so kind. I let them know I was a little early to meet my party and it was kind of chilly that morning to wait outside. The charming cashier said "hun come on in" Would you like some coffee or tea to warm up. I was taken away by all the staff and I observed how they treated 1st time customers as well as established regulars. If you have ever encountered any form of mistreatment towards yourself or any handicap friends, this is the place to go. They give very decent portions for the prices. To top it off the food is really good

Google
Great diner. Looks like a dive but great food and service

Yelp
The broad street diner has been a favorite spot since before Covid. A lot of diners are struggling to make money now and the broad street diner is hanging in there! This is one of my favorite places to have breakfast, I get eggs over with bacon home fries and rye toast. My favorite server , Courtney, remembers my order every time and is attentive but not overbearing. This diner has excellent food and is half the price of most breakfast spots.

Yelp
Came here on Sunday 06/02/24 to grab some breakfast before day 2 of roots picnic. This is a legit diner down to the decor and seating. We were seated upon arrival and placed our orders within 10mins. Our foot arrived no more than 20mins after. We had: Steak and eggs: 10/10 the char on the steak was perfect as was the consistency of the eggs. Pancake breakfast (mine): 10/10 it came with 2 pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage. I opted for 4 pieces of bacon and added a side of grits. The density of the pancakes was perfect without being too heavy. Our waitress was very sweet and complimentary. She asked us questions about our trip and just made random conversation that was super organic. Kindness is free so I'm always happy to have pleasant interactions with people, regardless of how short. I wish I could remember her name but she was a shorter Caucasian woman with a short pulled back ponytail (hey girl hey!) I genuinely have no complaints. The diner was 24hrs so if I ever find myself in PA again I'd come back no question.

Yelp
Felt compelled to write a review after I had two great meals here, but also when I heard the building is being sold from local friends and I'll be sad to not be able to eat here again. Came here on a Saturday for breakfast and Sunday for brunch and no problem getting a seat, the old school diner vibe felt just like the warm cups of coffee they poured, and the food was very, very good. My breakfast was two eggs scrambled with srapple, hash browns and english muffin. Scrapple was fried up perfect, the cook on the browns were stellar, and I liked the whipped butter for my english muffin. Our server was super nice, and my friend who lives around the corner loved his breakfast sandwich. Came back the next day with a slight hangover, and again, it was such a good move. Our server this time was also super speedy and nice, the chicken salad triple decker sandwich was SO good. Lots of chicken, lots of bacon, and the fries were tasty! My friend got the special french toast with lemon, blueberry and the cookie butter and he was in heaven. Im hoping next time I visit, I can come back and order some more delicious food with a hot cup of coffee.
google avatar

David d.

Yelp
Serious old school diner with solid old school diner food. Friendly wait staff like you've been coming there forever.

Di S.

Yelp
To go: fired egg breakfast sandwich with hash browns. OK sandwich but zero seasoning.
google avatar

susan D.

Yelp
Not your average diner. The Food is really good and the staff is SO amazing. O order the grilled cheese with ham ALL the time. The fries are also really good!
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
A basic diner gets a basic review. It wasn't bad. I went for the turkey platter. I thought the turkey was really good. Not as much on the stuffing though. It was just ok but a little mushy and sweet for my taste. It was kind of weird that they put turkey gravy on the meat but brown gravy on the potatoes. It didn't work for me. I liked the soup though. And I like the fact that they have Melrose Diner desserts if I need my fix. And I like the atmosphere. The staff was nice. Even if the food was hit or miss.
google avatar

Adam P.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for a great long-time diner. Not sure what the other ratings are about, but I enjoyed this place. Great Reuben. It's a diner, not a Michelin star restaurant.
google avatar

Stan H.

Yelp
A friend of mine looked at this diner as having fancy options. I couldn't sense if he was joking with me or not, but if he was not, I have to disagree. While offering a pizza burger may not be the most common item to offer, the look and the overall taste of my buffalo chicken salad, his coffee but able to have it in the evening spoke "basic." This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it serves the people that want items that tend to be more straightforward. I ordered a salad, which I usually don't do, because none of the other items screamed at me. I was totally okay with this- it was a pretty healthy options to be surrounded by so many vegetables, but still being courteous to the company sharing their time with me as well as to patronize the diner itself. The waiter and cashier were both really nice and they didn't rush us since the diner was not full on this peaceful, but really rainy Saturday night.

John N.

Yelp
Good breakfast Not a fancy south Philly restaurant for breakfast but food was good. Coffee was excellent. People are very friendly and a lot of locals. I will go back.

Kat F.

Yelp
Service is PHENOMENAL, staff are so friendly and helpful. Old school diner vibes, the coffee is great and the specials are always amazing.
google avatar

Leena S.

Yelp
Very average diner quality breakfast. I two poached eggs from the Breakfast All Day Menu and the husband went with the Country Omelette. Both entrees was just okay. The hash-browns were cold and my husbands were practically burnt (see photo). We were hoping to be in and out fairly quickly, but our food took a while, even though it was 9 AM on a Sunday morning and not crowded.
google avatar

Moira M.

Yelp
Classic diner food! This is just a no fuss good breakfast. You don't have to wait for a table on a Sunday. The food is delicious and comes out fast. The servers are quick and efficient. In a city full of overpriced brunch, this is a truly a gem where you can just go get a quick, delicious, reasonably priced breakfast.
google avatar

Bern R.

Yelp
Actually the food was very good and Fresh, We really enjoyed it We couldn't eat all of our meals so we took home a take-out container for it later. That was my first time there. I like it when it's not crowded We will be back

Yelp
"This is the best cheesesteak I've had yet in Philly," my friend said, and we've been to all the cheesesteak places around town. "Tony Luke's was good, but this is better," he said. I was certainly amazed by the cheesesteak as well. Nice, chewy rolls filled with tender steak and fried onions. My friend said that the only room for improvement was more cheese. I felt there was enough. For top Philly cheesesteak, it definitely falls in the same top 5 as Woodrow's, Tony Luke's (on a good day), Sonny's, and Dalessandro's. The fries with their slightly crispy outside were great. The chicken parm sandwich was not as good. The chicken was a little chewy and stringy and bland. Lots of parking in front of the diner and around the block. Good service, too. Definitely stop in to try the cheesesteak.

Kevin L B.

Yelp
Breakfast croissant, sandwich was terrible the waitress asked me how was it? I told her, than she made said a smart remarked! she asked me! I been here times but not anymore for a while at less! This was the third try this time, the waffle was first , it was worse!!!

david w.

Yelp
Not only do you not get a salad they don't even have baked potatoes they didn't give bread or anything delivering onions was subpar at best. The restaurant was empty. That should've been an indicator to run away. I wouldn't eat there if I was starving dumpy atmosphere also.
google avatar

Rain S.

Yelp
Huge portions that were delicious. I had the bacon cheeseburger and it was huge! I asked for pickles and they gave me three big, sliced pickles. It also came with hot, fresh french fries. For dessert I had the buttercream layer cake and it was out of this world! Yum! Oh! and the best part? I got all that for less than $20! I would go back.
google avatar

Olivia O.

Yelp
Great little breakfast spot! It truly hit the spot. The strawberry's were so fresh and delicious. Bonus it has a parking lot!!!!

Mariana G.

Yelp
I frequently go there to have breakfast with a family member. The food is very good but the service is super bad, especially when you are served by a girl named Annie with a heavy attitude, throwing the menu and cutlery on the table when taking the order. She responds, annoyed, I understand that you may be having a bad day but I don't know if it's an issue of racism, it's very bad service when she's here.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Initially looked for the Panda Express at 10th and Market. (Closed for emergency repairs) We had driven by this diner and chose to circle around and try it. I wasn't disappointed. I had a chicken ceasar wrap and well done fries.. WAY TOO MUCH food! Very tasty with just the right amount of dressing. I gave half of my wrap to a homeless man (Manny) the diner staff have taken under their wing. The hostess was very appreciative of my effort. (I think I noticed a tear in her eye.) They even donate part of their tips to him when he will take it. It's people like these folks that make a business a success!
google avatar

Gilbert S.

Yelp
I came here with my six week, old son, and girlfriend, and had in the best experience! The server was very kind, and took down all of our order in detail, and not a single thing went wrong. Our son cried a little during our visit, and the waitress was still so accommodating and did a great job on top of that. The food was perfect. Everything we ordered to a T with great taste. We will definitely be back and recommend friends!

Lia I.

Yelp
Wait staff is always amazing. Great hangover breakfast. Amazing milkshakes. They also have a parking lot which is nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Apparently Philly places don't answer their phones... I'm not going all the way there to find they're closed
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
Came here after a night out in the city. We arrived around 12 am and the place was semi packed. I order the blueberry pancakes with scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage. The food was delicious and the portion size was good ! Their prices are very affordable. The staff and service was good . Out waitress was attentive and nice . There is very limited parking in their lot. Overall I enjoy my meal and will be coming back !
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
Food not bad at this diner only issue I have is the man in the back booth always sleeping. Does he have a house ?? Is he even a customer?? I don't mind but if I wanted to watch someone sleep I would stay home. I don't need my kids or family looking at this.
google avatar

Jeffrey R.

Yelp
My morning run takes me by Broad Street Diner every day, and I love breakfast food. How could I resist stopping in one day? Broad Street Diner is just a very exceedingly solid diner. Not great yet not terrible. I ordered a blueberry muffin and the French Toast. The blueberry muffin was actually the winner for that meal. It was perfectly toasted and just super tasty. Honestly, I probably could have stopped there! The French Toast was, unfortunately, just very okay. The packets of Smucker's for syrup did help temper my expectations. Do I need to run back any time soon? Probably not. But, if I am ever in the mood for a post run muffin (who am I kidding? I always am), then I know where to stop!
google avatar

Yelp
When the winter months set in, my cravings for hot chocolate begin to skyrocket. After attending a Sixers game one cold night a few weeks ago, we decided to hit Broad Street Diner after the game. We sat at the counter and I had hot chocolate with whipped cream while my husband had a black and white milkshake. Both hit the spot, and the milkshake was huge. Our server was sweet and overall the experience was good. This may become a tradition for post-game celebrations!
google avatar

Chelsea F.

Yelp
Food was ok. Coffee was good. Waiter was either racist or didn't want to be at work. They said they didn't have boxed eggs and they gave my son boxed eggs. The hash browns were not good and omelet with ham .. ham was not cooked so we had to pick them out..
google avatar

Jack J.

Yelp
Your typical post-night-out diner. The food is mediocre and the service is sarcastic, perfect for the drunken crowd. I came here and my my friend told me to get the scrapple. I will probably never eat scrapple again in my life. The other stuff wasn't bad, I mean I don't really know how to review chicken tenders and fries that taste like cafeteria food, but I don't expect much more from a diner. It's real quiet in here... like people were falling asleep on their food
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
This place. Need I say more?? The servers? Immaculate. The ice?? Best I've ever had. Food?? Also fantastic. Haven't even ordered, I can just tell. 10/10.
google avatar

Marissa R.

Yelp
This diner is pretty "okay". I was delighted by the brightness and cleanliness of it after the remodeling - but it still has the old charm on the outside! There is a very large selection on the menu... whether you're in the mood for breakfast, a salad, sandwich, or a full-on dinner entree, they've got you covered. I had a spinach and chicken salad, which was decent and filling. It was just the healthy option that I wanted, too. The service staff seemed to be pretty bored, as there was practically nobody in the restaurant besides my table. The nice, elderly waitress ended up chatting our ear off for about 10 minutes, but we didn't mind. Maybe I should try this place again for a Sunday morning brunch sometime.
google avatar

Alaric Q.

Yelp
First off, this review is 5 years late. But I just remembered I meant to do this way back then because my friends and I were blown away by this place's friendly local staff - especially Donna!! (I hope you check Yelp a lot, Donna. Sorry I'm late.) Food was exactly what you'd expect from a late night diner when you need a bite at 3am after a night fueled by merriment and definitely no alcohol. Yep. Service was awesome - friendly, local Philly folk doing their thing. Humorous and efficient, no BS but there to serve you that 2nd or 20th plate of hash brown at 3am (in my case, it was the latter). Donna and Broad Street Diner, I've been away for so long!!! But I'll be back!!!
google avatar

Ken C.

Yelp
Always was a nice place. To bad it was closed for so long. Now with new owners, the place looks great and the food is pretty good. When I'm there it seems sort of empty. But maybe I choose odd times to eat. Tasty shake I had.
google avatar

Isaiah S.

Yelp
The food was amazing! It came out super quick and was cooked well! The service could've been better but it was all in all a good experience.

Rod M.

Yelp
Great people. Great menu. Spotless clean. Small private parking is a help, but also plenty of street parking.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Horrible food and even worse service. You can't order a simple roast beef sandwich after 9pm? The burgers are fried and the worst in the city. The food is god awful, go anywhere else!
google avatar

Marcos F.

Yelp
I have never been to a restaurant or diner with such bad service. The hostess at the front was extremely unpleasant and flat out rude. Honestly, I don't really make it a point to write many bad reviews but this isn't a place I'd go back to. I ordered chocolate chip pancakes and they weren't actually too bad which is why I'm gave it two stars, but just expect to be treated poorly. I don't recommend dining here. But if you decide to, I hope you have a different experience then I had.

Ronald G.

Yelp
This place is the worst!!! I went for breakfast this morning. The food served had been prepared ahead of time no freshness here. I am a master when it comes to egg preparation and these had been cooked to rubber yet they were still bright yellow. The hash browns and bacon were greasy gross and cold. The whole plate was cold! Never again
google avatar

Jeannie S.

Yelp
Service was great when I came here one Saturday morning. A lot of people seem to like that they have alcohol served ( Irish coffee, specifically). I had their spinach omelette which was just great. It was not too oily or flimsy, but a fresh made fluffy omelette with the right amount of feta added. I enjoyed my meal and mostly loved the home fries weren't some soggy sliced potatoes! They were diced fried potatoes. All that I enjoy most. This isn't the best diner of all places, but I think the Broad Street Diner is nice when you are in the area or it's late at night and you want a good comfort meal. Would come here again!
google avatar

Benjamin T.

Yelp
I honestly didn't expect much from this place when I first came in. I thought, "it's just a diner." I ordered a country omelette and a cream cheese and man, I was surprised. The portion was pretty big, the price for it wasn't too bad, and above all, it tasted great. It came with hash browns which just hit the spot. Ever since then, I came here more often and it never disappoints. The staff is awesome, the food tastes great, it's inexpensive, the portions are large, it's open 24 hours, there's a parking lot, what else can you ask for? If you come here, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Sorry to see that others have had bad experiences at the Broad Street Diner. I too live just around the corner and have visited twice--most recently on 1/14/2012, once for lunch and once for breakfast. Both experiences were fine and no issues with service. My experience with the food here is that has been fine, nothing special. My one "complaint" is that the fries are clearly frozen "crinkle" fries....kind of a letdown at a diner. As for the reviewer who commented that Broad Street was sellling Melrose Diner cookies....well, yeah. They are under the same ownership and the Melrose baked goods have a great rep. What's the issue? I was glad to see it...saves me a trip down Broad Street. Not a culinary destinaton but decent enough for a basic lunch or breakfast. Yes, there is a parking lot but it is tiny--probably why Stephen Starr passed on the place. Broad St line to Ellsworth-Federal is a better bet.
google avatar

Rits M.

Yelp
Very solid diner, with good food at whatever time you come by. The menu is pretty extensive and they have options for the whole family. I came for breakfast, and i tried the scrapple, which is pretty good! The prices are pretty much the average diner prices, I paid $10 for breakfast and coffee- eggs, scrapple, hash browns and toast. The service is pretty good too, but the wait time from the kitchen is a little while. I asked them to add the scrapple to my meal after the order had been placed, maybe thats what took a little extra time. The space is pretty large, could fit about 30 parties and there are some regulars as well. A guy came in with his kid and all the waitstaff knew him, came over to say hi and chat a little. Definitely friendly and helpful. Place was clean too and bathrooms were great.

Yelp
Late Dinner - Philadelphia Ordered the classic Hot turkey open face sandwich. Turkey was so salty that is was nearly inedible. If it had not been so late, (midnight) I would have sent it back. Mashed potatoes were great, very creamy. Salad was nice sized and crisp. Several of the lettuce leaves were brown and discolored. Service was just OK. Had to asked 3 times for lemons for the water. This is my third visit over the last 3 years. We visited again because our last visits were great. The late night staff needs some direction. The restaurant was so dusty you could write your name in the dust on top of the booth divider half-walls.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Better than most diners. Decent food good service.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Perhaps the cleanest diner I've ever been in, I was caught off guard when I ate here the other day. I came here right after a football game-my cleats still on and my clothes completely covered in dirt. I never felt underdressed for a 24 hour diner until that moment. Dare I say that the Broad Street Diner looked classy. The food was still diner quality food, with cheap fried food, but I was surprised again to see healthier options. I ultimately ignored those options, but it was nice to know that they were there. I ordered the chicken parmesan sandwich, and unlike some of the previous reviews where their sandwich was served burt, mine turned out okay. Just okay. The chicken was thin and slightly overcooked, but I've definitely had worse. When it came to service, I had quite the opposite experience compared to previous reviews.. The waitress was very friendly, and she was attentive to her customers. Granted, I found out later that she just started working there, but sometimes all a business needs is a little fresh air. I'll stop by again if the mood strikes again.
google avatar

Notorious H.

Yelp
This is probably the worst diner around. The food is diner food, so it isn't horrible...but the service. The service is awful. The waitstaff are inattentive and most seem like they are on drugs. It takes someone 10 minutes to come over and take your order. The staff talk with each other and ignore the customers. They also must be ghosts because they are usually not seen. We only come here when we don't feel like cooking and want to be aggravated. The staff is unprofessional and could use a good manager. I guess the owner doesn't care because no changes have been made since the place opened. 3/31/17 I don't know why I'm back. This diner sucks. The service is awful. There are 5 wait staff looking around and only 1 is working. There isn't even anyone to complain to. We had to wait like 10 minutes to get 2 cups of water. This place should be ashamed to call themselves a diner. The owner should clean house and maybe show up and manage the staff instead of collecting a paycheck from the restaurants he owns. If only the Oregon Diner were closer. Damn you Broad Street Diner... you got me over barrel.
google avatar

Dani N.

Yelp
Food is all freshly made. This is one of the cleanest diners I have ever been in. Plus the waitstaff is very friendly and attentive. Also very accommodating to vegetarians and people who do not eat pork. ALSO 24hrs!! So great!!
google avatar

Yelp
Broad Street Diner is a no-frills sort of place, and it's a gem when you're looking for a traditional breakfast of eggs, meat, potatoes, and toast. The best part is it's pretty quiet in the standard weekend brunch hours. Since the diner is open 24/7, it seems they have larger crowds post-bar time. For a group of 7, around 11am on a Sunday, we were seated immediately. Our server was attentive and kind, and the kitchen was quick. The price is right. For our entire group to have generously portioned breakfast, our total was under $70 which is quite a steal. Next time, I hope to try something a little more adventurous so I can get a better feel for the kitchen team's ability. They definitely know how to cook a good, standard breakfast; however, and that's what will keep me coming back!
