The Best Bagels In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"BroBagel in Wicker Park is from the owners of nearby New Haven-style pizza spot, Piece Brewery and Pizzeria. These New York-style bagels are boiled then baked for an especially crackly crust with a springy interior. They’re hefty and thick, and so is the cream cheese that’s slathered on (which will probably end up as much on your hands as in your mouth). The bagel sandwiches are pretty solid, and there’s even a vegan option with scrambled spiced tofu, sautéed mushrooms, onions, and spinach." - veda kilaru, john ringor, nick allen

BroBagel - Review - Wicker Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"While the name BroBagel may conjure up visions of a fraternity churning out baked goods as part of a fundraising event, don’t be fooled. This carryout operation in Wicker Park is from the owners of nearby pizza spot, Piece Brewery and Pizzeria, and they clearly know dough. At BroBagel, the delicious New York-style bagels are boiled then baked for an especially crackly crust with a springy interior. They’re hefty and thick, and so is the cream cheese that’s slathered on. Google
This place used to look presentable and have good vibes. You could even sit or walk inside. They narrowed down the customer area to a prison cell size and removed all seating. I’ve never seen a sadder looking bagel shop. And right on Milwaukee and North…

mc smarto

Google
I ordered a few bagels for delivery. I asked for them toasted so they were delicious with a good chew. The plain bagel with the brown sugar cinnamon cream cheese was extra yum. I also tried the egg, bacon, and cheddar on an asiago bagel. It had fluffy eggs and crispy bacon. The everything bagel is intense. You will definitely need a mint afterwards. I tried it with the jalapeño cream cheese, but that didn't have a lot of taste. I will definitely order again when I need a bagel.

Ilene Moore

Google
It is essential that you get a Bacon, Egg & Cheese sandwich on an Asiago bagel with Jalapeño cream cheese!!! 12/10 incredible.

Dylan Foster

Google
Took away a Nova Lox sandwich on everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. It was really good! The red onion slices were a little thick for my liking but I can’t find a fault in everything else. It was very good!

Josh Lozano

Google
When I tell you we need to boycott this place, thats an understatement. They can't keep getting away with theft. They serve day old bagels to you and are super messy and cold, then want to charge an arm and a leg. Please stop going here. I wonder when they cared about the product instead of just the money

Natasha maraoui

Google
Bagels were dry and I found hair in both bagels we ordered. No one would call me back to refund the order.

Alec B

Google
They cancelled an order made the day before for only 18 bagels. It was cancelled 30 minutes before it should be ready. It almost ruined plans for the day if it is wasnt for Helfeld's which took the order. I wouldn't recommend brobagel on this alone. It's severely disappointing that. Bagel shop can't fulfil an order of 18 bagels.

Brian Troy

Google
I’ve given this place so many chances because of how close it is to my house, but every single time, I’m so disappointed. The wait times are INSANE (I’m talking 45 min+) and that’s for 1 bagel with cream cheese!! It’s always so packed in there with DoorDash/uber eats orders waiting for pick up. I genuinely don’t understand why they allow for delivery apps when they can NEVER have them ready on time. Then when you finally get it it’s a rock hard bagel that literally hurts your jaw to eat. Don’t waste your money!

Yelp
So I am giving 4 stars because the service makes up for what I feel the bagel lacks. I ordered the nova lox on a toasted everything bagel. The bagel is good but I felt this wasn't the best lox I've had and for the price was a little underwhelming. The bagel toasted on one half was a little hard and I thought getting the flavored cream cheese would spice up the experience but did not really. The sandwich did hold up and I appreciated that. The service was awesome!! The shop is clearly under some sort of construction but it's still very cute shop.

Yelp
I had brobagel on a Friday around 11 am. It wasn't super busy, but there were a few people waiting in line outside to order, so I was glad that I ordered online in advance. The staff was super friendly, especially when I mentioned that it was my first time. I had an everything bagel with the tofu scramble. The everything bagel was good. I like it when the bagel has a ton of everything seasoning, and this definitely delivered. However, the tofu scramble was not it. It was very messy and difficult to eat the bagel sandwich without all the tofu falling out. The veggies in it also didn't seem particularly fresh or tasty. I think the option to add cream cheese would help it to stick together (I couldn't figure out how to add cream cheese through the online ordering, maybe they would let you do it if you were ordering in person). Another item I would add to the online menu is iced coffee! I ended up having to make two stops so that I could get an iced coffee somewhere else.

Yelp
This is a neat little spot. Ordered a bacon egg and cheese on an Asiago cheese bagel. Was a little disappointed when they said there was a $0.50 up charge for the Asiago bagel but that quickly turned into satisfaction after taking my first bite. Also kind of neat to watch them make the bagels if there is enough room by the cashier. Delicious bagel, would recommend!

D A.

Yelp
Did NOT expect it to be as pricey as it was... love a good bagel, but the price did not justify it. I got just a bagel... that's it... not even sliced.. $3.22... no thanks! I will say the staff was super nice, so good on them!

Kathryn A.

Yelp
Ordering system is not customer friendly at all, half the time i tried to order the cashier was yelling other customers names in my face. There is no ambiance to speak of because there is no inside. When I finally got the order I was pretty disappointed with the food. While not "bad", its not just not what I think the average person wants in a breakfast sandwich. I tried the Atomic Doug's Sausage sandwich. Their breakfast sandwiches are like 4 scrambled hotel pan eggs on a massive bagel. Super dry. Dry bagel, dry eggs, dry sausage. It's also so large that it kinda just falls apart while you're eating it. A sandwich this big and dry needs some sauce guys. Even just a little hot sauce. Something. I'm puzzled because I think they could both lower their food cost and make a better product if they just tried their own food. Seriously, I challenge the ownership to eat one of these sandwiches without dying of thirst. I appreciate the value in a way, as it is a big sandwich, but the construction leaves A LOT to be desired. Won't be returning.

Yelp
I ordered brobagel for the first time this weekend and I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews! To start with the everything bagel was amazing and COVERED in everything seasoning. We ordered two bagel sandwiches, a bacon egg and cheese and the hot Doug's atomic bagel. The bacon in the bacon egg and cheddar was cooked perfectly. I also ordered a side of chive cream cheese and added to my sandwich, the cream cheese was delicious and full of flavor. The atomic bagel had a deliciously seasoned sausage and my boyfriend said it was one of his favorite bagel sandwiches he's ever had.

Jacob P.

Yelp
I hate a garlic bagel from there with eggs bacon and cheese the best thing I ever had

Gillian W.

Yelp
best bagels I've found in Chicago so far. Closest thing I've found to a good east coast bagel, good flavors, toasted perfectly, and friendly staff.
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
The best bagels and i also had great customer service from kenny and tabitha 10/10 would recommend to anyone who enjoys bagels

Nathan M.

Yelp
First time here and we didn't know you had to wait outside for your food. We waited over 45 min for 2 bagel sandwiches. Both were good but still not worth waiting that long. Annoying to see them taking all these DoorDash and Uber eats orders without prioritizing the customers at the storefront.

Yelp
Place was recently debuted on a "best breakfast sandwich" list & nothing could be further from the truth. Aside from the spicy aspect of the sausage & the seasonings from the everything bagel this is tasteless. The egg & cheese have zero flavor. As much as food cost these days I don't have time for this. Not to mention my sandwich was at best room temperature & I love my freshly ordered food to be piping hot. To their credit it could be that I simply ordered the wrong combination but had this been void of sausage & a flavored bagel it wouldn't be worth of a paper weight.

Maria N.

Yelp
I ordered the lox bagel and think it was quite good! Lox is always a toss up for me, so it's a risky choice when I order it but I will say this was one of the better lox bagels I've had. The bagel itself was super yummy too. Looking forward to trying one of their egg sandwhich bagels next time!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Great bagels. I particularly like the spicy Atomic Hot Doug Sausage with eggs and pepper jack. Quick friendly service at the pickup window. Not sure why they still don't want guests inside the store...
google avatar

Caroline B.

Yelp
We really wanted to like this place, especially because the people were so nice! Unfortunately though, this was the worst bagel I have had in Chicago. We got a breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel and it was clear that the eggs, bacon, and bagel had been sitting all day. Wont be coming here again.
google avatar

Mariel T.

Yelp
Not bad, not great. It got the job done for a hungry hungover crew. You get your money's worth with the quantity.
google avatar

Yelp
This New Yorker has been trying to find a decent bagel. Finally checked this spot out. Came by around 9:30am on a Tuesday. There were a few ppl waiting but it doesn't take long to order and get my bagel. They were working out of a walk up window which was nice. I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese and it was like $5.50 I think. It was pretty decent. It was a bit too salty but still good. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
Having grown up on the East Coast, I know a good bagel at first bite. Bro bagels are the real deal.
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
Best bagels in Chicago! Closest I've had to New York. Definitely a weekend treat. Brothers baking bagels since 1983. Come over and support Brobagel in Bucktown! Open every day 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Everybody who works there at the walk up window is super pleasant! Left today with a nice bag of fresh & tasty bagels. They also have breakfast sandwiches like your bagel with bacon, egg and cheese. Enjoy! Happy Easter~

Michael B.

Yelp
Ordered two bacon egg and cheese bagels on everything bagels this morning. The bagel was stale, the eggs were squeaky from being overcooked without ANY seasoning, and the bacon was soft. The cheese was cheese. Gas stations have better breakfast sandwiches.

Elena W.

Yelp
I have only had carryout from here. I don't know why the reviews are so bad. But if you order bagels delivery they're insanely fresh!! I was just spending an entire night raving to 10 people at a dinner party about how insanely good these bagels are. The seasoning is AMAZING as both top and bottom of the bagel are delicious. Like so over seasoned. In the best way. But then I got on yelp and now I'm incredibly alarmed that this place is going to close because of bad reviews. It's insanely good- please don't close!!!!

J J.

Yelp
Between 4 and 5 stars, but so many negative reviews so I am rounding up today. I really like these bagels because 1. They are crunchy on the outside and soft with some chew on the inside (I don't like the inside too soft or with an overly regular crumb); 2. The covered bagels are generously covered on both sides (I like the savory bagel flavors but don't like that the bottom usually is lacking in the seasonings, not a problem at this shop!); 3. They are ok priced (there are cheaper and definitely more expensive bagels in the neighborhood). My biggest bagel rule is that I should feel no need to toast it the first day, and this is the only Chicago bagel that currently fulfills this rule. The reviews for Brobagel here make me wonder if I don't know what a true NYC bagel is despite having eaten them many times when there. My impression is that they should have a harder crust but be soft on the inside. Thus far, of the 3 other local bagels I've had, all the other ones have crusts that are too soft, leading to a lack of contrasting textures between outside and inside...and requiring a toast on day 1. For Brobagels, I don't toast on day 1 and can get them back to day 1 texture by toasting them whole (uncut) in the toaster oven on days 2-3. One gripe, online menu does not reflect current bagel flavor availability. I would love to preorder my half dozen bagels and just pick them up, but I have to wait in line and order on-site to get the exact flavors I want. I sort of get this because I am unclear what would happen if they were out of any flavor I picked online.
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
Came here this morning on 11/10 at 7:25am and there was a sign on the store that said no bagels until 7:30am. Through a window, an employee informed us that there will be no bagels until 8:30am. For a place that is supposed to be open at 6:30am, kind of unacceptable.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Classic chewy, crispy, flavorful bagel operation. Lox and cream cheese was solid, with ample fish. Onion with egg and cheese was equally satisfying.
google avatar

Soup B.

Yelp
Probably the worst bagels I have ever had. Would rate a Dunkin bagel better. Was really expecting something better when I saw the weekend lines, but was very disappointed. Got a 6 pack variety, each one was like eating dry toast. They were hard, a couple of them were burnt (I got them cold, so not sure why they came burnt). Super overpriced for what is basically a grocery store frozen bagel.
google avatar

Kristina S.

Yelp
It was good but not worth the prices. I'm from the northeast so I have high standards for bagels, but I'm used to bagels but a cheap item. This sausage egg and cheese was something like $10. I didn't think it was really that great either. The spice was strange, and it felt too healthy. When you're ordering a sausage egg and cheese, you want it to be somewhat greasy. I'd be curious to go back and get some of their other bagels. Overall the quality of the bagels were good. The location is convenient if you live in wicker park or if you're over in the area to shop. The last time I was there they only had a window outside, and you couldn't go inside, but I haven't been over there since the summer.
google avatar

Lj W.

Yelp
I wish i could give less than one star. I ordered an everything bagel with lox and capers, tomatoes, and red onion, and in return i got 4 bones sticking straight out of where it was cut in half and a bagel covered in rye seasoning. When i tried to call the business to let them know there were a couple of bones, all i got was a busy dial tone. I tried calling at least 6 different times and no one answered. I'm not sure how you can run a business with literally no one to answer your phone? I wish i would have read the google reviews before ordering, i definitely wouldn't have wasted my money here. If you're looking for a good bagel spot try The Great American Bagel. Cause this definitely isn't it.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
This place used to be pretty good. Just got 4 bagels at 10am. They are dry and hard, no way these were made in the last 2 days. If you pay 15$ for 4 bagels they better be fresh. Driving to Skokie
google avatar

Nicholas M P.

Yelp
Mediocre bagel at best. For a bagel shop, they only have about six varieties of bagel and they are unimpressive (plain, sesame seed, salt, poppy seed, etc). Add in the cost of nearly $3 for a single bagel after tax that didn't taste freshly baked in the AM a few hours after opening...so not worth it. Store was in a good location and looked nice, but unfortunately overpriced and underperformed.

Kennedy M.

Yelp
Took FOREVER you have to wait outside. Don't understand how it takes 25 minutes to get out orders. Ridiculous. We had to leave and get our food refunded.
google avatar

Genna G.

Yelp
Very good bagels. Maybe the best in the city although not be as stellar as some of the options on the north shore but worth my 35 minute walk to go pick them up at their pick up window. Bagels are sold by the half dozen. Skip the salt one as it's too salty ( yes I realize it's supposed to be but it's just overkill). The other flavors are great.
google avatar

Jonathan K.

Yelp
Egg bacon cheese on poppyseed bagel. Basic drip coffee. Customer service was quick. Looked like they were still moving into the space. Staff was training on front register. Some confusion but did not mind. Prices could be lower a bit being bagel was $9 and coffee $4.50. Being the fact the food was good but coffee limited probably won't return due to prices being a bit high for area.
google avatar

Carrie H.

Yelp
Generally speaking, Chicago doesn't have amazing bagel places - it's just a fact. BUT this place is as close as it gets! They have been a neighborhood staple for me for the last 5 years I've lived in East Humboldt Park. One suggestion - the salt on the everything bagel seasoning is a bit intense. But you're doing great sweetie otherwise!!!
google avatar

Cynthia N.

Yelp
Come back! We were able to pick up some bagels last weekend! They're open Thursday and Friday from 6:30AM - 11:30AM, and Saturday and Sunday from 6:30AM - 12:30PM. Order at the window for takeout. We picked up a 1/2 dozen bagels (a mix of plain, everything, and garlic). I had also had a toasted everything bagel with their seasonal pesto cream cheese. It was loaded with cream cheese and I loved it! My boyfriend had the bacon egg and cheese and said it was very good. We've been having bagels for breakfast every morning. It's such a nice treat and a nice change from our usual breakfasts (nothing or cereal). Overall, I think the bagels are quite yummy! I really like that the toppings are on both sides of the bagel. My boyfriend says most places have that, but I don't know if that's true and I appreciate it either way. We toast the bagels in our toaster oven and the crusts get nice and crisp, but the interior stays chewy (but not too bready). I would definitely recommend and we plan to come back soon!
google avatar

Dorothy S.

Yelp
So the bagels here are pretty legit, but the process they have at the window is a hot mess. The problem is that there is one window with one worker who takes orders and also who gives out the bagels once they're ready. This honestly creates chaos and there is no order. There has to be a better way of doing this. Why not have a QR code and have everyone order from their phones and then pick up their food at the window? Sorry but having EVERYTHING done at this tinyass multipurpose window with one worker person is not efficient or pleasant to deal with. There's no room to wait on the sidewalk and nobody wants to wait in the gross alley. Otherwise, the bagels were seriously pretty damn good and the lox was tasty as well. Parking here sucks as it does anywhere on busy North Ave.

Nancy R.

Yelp
First time trying it the eggs were nicely cook but unfortunately everything was too salty from the sausage eggs. I would recommend going to bagel authority!
google avatar

Jordan R.

Yelp
A quick and easy breakfast stop in Wicker. We had a few different egg sandwiches. The eggs are real scrambled eggs and have nice flavor. The bagels themselves are pretty good but a little too crispy. They have nice seasoning but they're not soft enough for me so they're hard to bite into without getting stuff everywhere. I'd recommend a stop by for a quick bite in the morning if you want take away.
google avatar

Eva S.

Yelp
Their bagels and breakfast sandwiches are delicious. You'll save a ton of time if you go on "off days" which means skipping Saturday and Sunday mornings. Those are the peak times, and you could wait in line for up to 45 minutes to get a toasted bagel sandwich. I did that once and won't do that again any time soon, but people stand in line week after week which translates to a devoted following. It's worth it if you're looking for a quality bagel in Wicker Park! The staff makes each bagel/sandwich to order. Brobagel also serves soup, dessert (7-layer bars and rice crispy treats), and Metropolis Coffee. A simple bagel is $1.49 and spread is $1.25. Slight up-charge for lox spread, butter, or whipped tofu. If you order in-person, your bagel will be freshly toasted and cut in half. They are generous with their cream cheese, which I absolutely love. Their flavors include: sriracha, chive, cream cheese, veggie, lox. You can buy bagels by the dozen, have them cater at your workplace, or you can get a "Commuter Special:" your choice of bagel, cream cheese, and coffee for $4.89. I've had their lox bagel (~$10) a few times and most recently, realized that I'd prefer a simple bagel & cream cheese for less than $4.00. I had an Asiago bagel with veggie cream cheese. But their breakfast sandwiches are the most popular items here. In the future, I might order half a dozen to-go with an 8 oz tub of cream cheese and beat the weekend rush, but those lines exist for a reason. You can't go wrong with Brobagel.

Danielle F.

Yelp
Poor quality and poor customer service. Very inconsistent experiences when ordering the same food.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
Love their bagels! The staff is friendly and the service is fast. Durning the pandemic they have had their pick up window outside which has been a game changer. I feel safe picking up delicious bagels! The siracha cream cheese and salt bagel combo is not one to be missed. I also love their sesame bagels!
google avatar

Melanie H.

Yelp
Pretty terrible bagel. Onion bagel was completely burned and rock hard. If your bagels are fresh you shouldn't even need to toast them. The onions were so blackened from the toasting it made the whole sandwich so bitter and inedible. 2 stars for the more than expected amount of lox that was on it
google avatar

Marissa A.

Yelp
I looooove bagels so I was so excited to try this bagel spot in wicker park. However I was a bit disappointed in this bagel flavoring/ price We spent over $20 on these two bagels, and the everything bagel seasoning was verrry salty. I would say there are definitely better bagel places to try if you're looking for a bagel stop Update per request: We ordered two bagels 2 months ago, policies may have changed. We got the everything bagel with cream cheese and the lox bagel
google avatar

Whitney M.

Yelp
I've been to Brobagel twice now, and I have to say it's really delicious. The space itself is tight, and if there's a line expect to be packed in and in everyone's way. This morning when I went, there was a line. I was able to order quickly, but the line was for their food order. We both decided on the atomic bagel, that has spicy sausage and pepper jack cheese. I like that you're able to choose what type of bagel you want, unlike a pre-fix menu. We stuck with everything. The sandwich was incredible, however quite spicy! I wish they had a bigger breakfast menu with a little more variety. For the money I spent ($30), the bagel wasn't super creative.
google avatar

Elyse T.

Yelp
Best bagel place in Chi!!! We wanted a small breakfast before running around for the day and found Brobagel which did not disappoint. You can't miss it walking down the street because there are tall windows and a big bagel hanging above the entrance door. When you walk in you're greeted with the intoxicating smells of all of the fresh bagels being baked and toasted. We went with the poppyseed bagel with plain cream cheese and garlic bagel with lox cream cheese. Oh sweet heavens- every creamy, savory bite was better than the last and when we were all done we wanted more!! Can't wait to come back then next time we're in town.

Greg R.

Yelp
Would give zero stars if I could. 40 dollars on door dash for a dozen bagels. I would rather have a colonoscopy then give these folks my business. Other suggestions: Anything
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
"Meh" is right. I will add words to this because those first three words are apparently not enough to allow for posting on the Yelp website. I had the bacon, egg and cheese sammie today on an asiago bagel. Meh, in every way. Bagel was fine, but for the price, a little less than that. Depending on how new and well managed it is, you may be able to find better eggs at a McDonald's (especially at MHQ). The cheese and the bacon weren't great. The service, however, was friendly, and they gave my son a BroBagel sticker. But I won't be back.
google avatar

Mary T.

Yelp
Good bagels, service could be improved. I needed to get something to a morning event I was hosting and doughnuts were already being covered. I picked BroBagel because it wasn't out of my way. I was worried it would take forever when I walked into a crowded store. Ordering only bagged bagels and prepackaged cream cheese worked in my favor as I was in and out faster than most; the lady in front of me seemed annoyed trying to order her sandwich. My biggest challenge was the bagel selection as the signs didn't match up to the bins. Overall, the bagels were good. I still prefer NYC Bagel and New York Bagel & Bialy, but they're the best bagel shop convenient to my house.
google avatar

Leela S.

Yelp
A solid bagel but not spectacular. We waited about 30+ minutes in line at 9am but after ordering at the window it only took a couple minutes. I got a toasted sesame bagel with tofu cream cheese. Bagel was well toasted and warm. The vegan cream cheese was flavorful but I could taste the tofu a lot - other vegan cream cheeses I have tried are far smoother and this was kinda chunky. I also wish there was a little more cream cheese on the bagel itself. So all in all it's a nice bagel but not like exceptional.

Joe F.

Yelp
On two separate occasions I ordered a plain bagel with chive cream cheese, which I thought sounded relatively straight forward for a bagel place. I waited 30 minutes while the 5 customers who ordered after me received their fully loaded bagel breakfast sandwiches before me. I'll be going to Mindy's around the corner from now on.
google avatar

Virginia M.

Yelp
Maybe I ordered the wrong thing.... Like my food tasted a bit rotten, you know that taste when something has mold, that's the taste I had :-( Seems very over priced for what they are selling and really no good veggie options. I'll likely give them one more shot and just get a bagel with cream cheese and see how that turns out. Lox Bagel/everything bagel - meh, I've had way better and it's really not worth the price. Would never order this from them again. Breakfast egg/cheese bagel with tomato and red onion on everything bagel.
